- Traveler036880950600 contributionsSolo travellers bewareVery disappointed with Martulli Viaggi. I booked a Matera: Sassi di Matera Tour with Entry to Cave Houses on November 19, 2024 using Get Your Guide and paid upfront as a solo traveller. With only one day in Matera, I arrived at the meeting point at 3pm to be met with the receptionist stating that there was noone to take me on the tour. I couldn't understand why and no reason was given. She called her supervisor who stated I had to pay a further £30 for someone to take me. I refused. It felt like it was solely because there was only one person on the tour. They could have cancelled a few weeks before to allow me the chance to rebook with another company. They proceeded to issue a refund stating the reason was due to inclement weather. It was a beautiful day. I will never recommend this company who effectively ruined my one day in Matera with no thought or consideration.Written November 19, 2024

- jane1608640 contributionsDisappointingHonestly £50 for two, started late, over 30 people. Guide was hard to understand, couldn’t hear, no passion at all in such a historic area. Found out more from Google - so very disappointing. We left the tour 15 minutes from the end, so disappointed after paying so much money! Recommend discovering this magical and historic area by walking and googling! Have always found Free walking tours to be so much more informativeWritten September 30, 2024

- anniehI98HX0 contributionsAmazing hike, beautiful viewsClaudio is an amazing guide, so friendly, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. The hike is amazing and there are so many cool things to see along the way - the Tibetan bridge, cave churches, local plants, the river, beautiful views os the Sassi, and more. Make sure to bring hiking shoes and water, this trip is a bit strenuous!Written September 21, 2024
- V5078CDloris0 contributionsNot pleasedOur guide was very broad strokes. No major details. Left not knowing how caves got there. Felt like I wanted a historian or architect to explain things but instead got a sweet older woman who didn’t provide insight.Written September 20, 2024
- rijo_eshaya0 contributionsWorst Guide. Awful ExperienceWe would like to place a formal complaint with regard to our Alberobello tour (booking # GYGG46YHXB24) which took place September 16 at 10:30am. As we discussed with you on that day, we are very angry at the tour guide who left us stranded early on the tour during a moment of photo opportunity. When we were finally able to reach our guide, INGO, by phone, he was very arrogant and condescending. He went as far as saying it wasn't his fault that we didn't catch up to him. His impoliteness was most unacceptable. In total dismay, we had no choice but find our way around and likely missed important information and many photo opportunities in this once in a lifetime trip. We have taken many tours through get you Guide and others and have found that the guides were always friendly, looked out for us, and confirmed the group was together. So this was a very frustratingly unique situation we found ourselves in. We finally walked around ourselves and eventually were able to get to our start point where our car was parked. Needless to say that we expect a full reimbursement of the tourWritten September 20, 2024

I booked a tour to the Crypt of Original Sin with one of the largest tour operators in the world, Expedia. They use Martulli Viaggi Tours to actually conduct the tour and take a piece of the action. When I got to Martulli Viaggi, they did mot have my reservation. Expedia had not provided it to them. I missed my 9 am tour, but Martulli Viaggi scrambled to find me a spot on a later tour. Their commitment to their customer is exemplary. Thank you.

As an art history fan, I loved this cave.
No photos allowed but when you see how remote this area was, a photo really doesn’t capture the sense of space in the cave or the very large gorge this cave is a part of. (How did anyone reach this space?)
Also, this cave is about 20 minutes outside of Matera. I never would have found it without a tour. (In fact,I believe the cave is closed unless you are with a tour now.)
The audio presentation mentioned these paintings, which would have filled the entire space originally, are 500 years before Giotto. Who knows what will be discovered next in this incredible area?

The crypt is phenomenal
Do pre book your tickets via the website
The visit to the crypt is short -30 minutes to prevent humidity damage to the decorative work in the crypt
There is an audio guide in English available

Thank you for your review! We're thrilled to hear that you found the crypt phenomenal. Your advice to pre-book tickets via the website is very helpful. The short 30-minute visit is indeed essential to prevent humidity damage to the decorative work. We're glad you made use of the English audio guide to enhance your experience. We hope to welcome you back for another visit in the future!

We are unsure why the reviews on Tripadvisor for this tour are so positive. We arrived at the tour offices in town at the appointed time. There was another couple waiting and a man behind the desk. We explained that we had booked the tour. There was no real interaction or conversation from the man who got up and said we were going to the car. As it transpired, he was the driver. During the short trip (approx. 20 mins) to the site he didn’t say a word. We got out of the car at the site and he led us down some stairs to the entrance, without saying anything. At this point we had no clue what was going on.
After waiting about 5 minutes, more people arrived and so did the guide. Although the guide spoke both English and Italian, he didn’t actually provide any commentary or explanation of the crypt. He simply turned on an Italian pre-recorded audio guide and provided small electronic audio guides with earphones to the non-Italian speakers so we could listen in English. The ‘tour’ consisted of sitting on the rocks in the cave listening to a pre-recorded audio guide. The actual guide did answer a few questions at the end. The whole experience lasted about 30 minutes.
The crypt is definitely worth seeing but the tour is certainly not worth the money (EUR 135.00). No photos are allowed to be taken inside the crypt.
We found the experience impersonal and out of character with the warm Italian welcome and friendliness we normally find. The guide and driver were really just going through the motions. It should be noted that you are required to pay for 3 people as a minimum number. Despite there being another couple on the tour we did not get any refund so can only assume they also paid for 3 people. A nice profit for the tour company.
Try another tour company if you want to visit the crypt.
