About
For more than three decades, Fundación MAPFRE has been one of the central points of Madrid’s cultural agenda for its exhibitions of Plastic Arts and Photography. Its program includes exhibitions of painting and sculpture focusing on the main protagonists (Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, Degas, Chagall, etc.) and the main movements of artistic modernity (Impressionism, Avant-garde, Surrealism, etc.). Photography exhibitions also range from the great masters of the 20th century (Atget, Evans, Winogrand, Strand..) to those who represent the best expression of artistic photography today.
From February 6 to May 11, 2025 you can visit the following temporary exhibitions: 1924. Other Surrealisms and Sakiko Nomura. Tender is the night.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- permia0 contributionsA pair of engaging exhibitsImage Cities was a winning entry in the inaugural 2021 MAPFRE Photo Award. It shows city scenes and streetscapes, including predominantly New York. Never having heard, or seen any, of Ilse Bing's work it was a fine opportunity to become acquainted with a selection of her voluminous oeuvre. Born in Frankfort in 1899 she died at the grand age of 99 in New York. Working primarily in Frankfort, Paris and New York, she lived in an era when women in these professions were often treated with disdain and hostility. To her credit she didn’t let this be a barrier to her creating an informative and important documentation of the often turbulent times she lived through. Evocative black and white photos show engaging scenes of people going about their daily lives. A child, Blanche, holding a large rabbit is grand. As is Three Schnauzers, Three Shadows. Some self portraits are also included.Written March 10, 2023
- Andrew30030 contributionsA great exhibition space, wth a very well curated exhibition of Paolo Gasparini's observational photographySo pleased that we were staying not far away and decided to go and see the temporary exhibition of photography by Paolo Gasparini. A friendly and warm welcome from all that we had contact with at this great exhibition space, and we both found the exhibition revealing, stunning as well as impacting and moving. In our view the exhibition is very, very well curated and a visit is highly recommended.Written October 29, 2021
- cruisin2paradise750 contributionsBerenice Abbott PhotographyIf you like photography, don’t miss this extensive exhibit. The building itself is beautiful! Her works, mostly from 1930’s in New York City, and some from Paris, are captivating, and the city scenes fascinate as they depict life from a different era. Her scientific photographs were quite interesting.Written May 16, 2019
- MadameLulu4180 contributionsArt exhibitThis exhibition was amazing. It included works by Picasso Matisse and Monet to name a few. I can’t say enough how impressive this was. You must see it if you are at all interested in art!Written November 14, 2018
- Howard-Liverpool0 contributionsExcellentAs I always say about a gallery especially this type of gallery you either love it or hate it. On this occasion I was 50 50 but the gallery itself is splendid - a great display area and superbly well done with exceptional staff. Friendliness of the highest order - GreatWritten August 8, 2018
- Pelias M0 contributionsGood place to visit artThey used to organize expositions by authors, or periods. Sometimes they organize samples of painting or sculpture. You have to book online in advance to be able to enterWritten November 14, 2017
- RCM3370 contributionsThe CeilingsI find that any art exhibit is going to be a bit of a gamble. But for €3, it is not much of gamble, even if you lose. For me, the Renoir Among Women was not quite a loss, there were a handful of pieces that drew my attention, without me forcing it. However, the building was the true star, particularly the second floor, as I found myself drawn to look up, as much as looking at the paintings and sculptures. Some glare, from the lights, made it necessary to use different angles for some of the paintings. But, overall, enjoyed my 30-40 minutes and think it would be a great place to view art in those times where the gamble fully pays off.Written December 31, 2016
- KentishMan560 contributionsFantastic Renoir Exhibition (until 08/01/2017)We only knew about this fantastic exhibition thanks to a poster hanging from a lamppost - over 70 paintings, the vast majority by Renoir from Paris (but also some Catalan artists, and also ones by Van Gogh, Picasso and sculptures by Degas, Maillol etc). The entrance was only 3 euros - surely the best value exhibition in the city! Really nice gallery as well.Written October 17, 2016
- Gunnar G0 contributionsExcellent temporary Renoir exhibitionThis fundacion at the adress Diputacion 250 close to Placa Catalonya has changed its name to Fundacio MAPFRE. If you love the paintings of Renoir this is the place to visit until Jan 8th 2017. The exhibition is based on an extraordinary loan of about 60 paintings from Musee D'orsay/L'orangerie, among other Renoirs impressive masterpiece "Bal du Moulin de la Galette".Written October 13, 2016
- swissabroad1230 contributionsFUNDACION MAPFRE ROCKS!A very nice place where we got the chance to see the BRUCE DAVIDSON photography exhibition. The photographies by Bruce Davidson were very impressive and we stayed for quiet some time at the Fundacion MAPFRE. There were lockers, where we left our handbags and backpacks.Written September 5, 2016
- Silvia A0 contributionsNice house and very interesting exhibitionThe place was the former house of Garriga i Nogués. It is an example of the Modernism in Catalonia, very well preserved. The exhibition is very nice, showing a large period of the photographer Bruce Davidson. The photos regarding the Civil Rights movement are very impressing.Written July 24, 2016
- mercedes n0 contributionsBeautiful BuildingThe exhibition was from a photographer. Interesting. But the building is worth the visit. The place was empty, so we could walk at our pace, calmly and in silence.Written June 4, 2016
- Brian G0 contributionsBruce Davidson Exhibit - HauntingThe new exhibit of photographs by American Bruce Davidson is a well organized but haunting experience. His photographs of some of the more down-trodden places in American and other places in the world over the last 40 years make you realize how little progress has been made in the world in treating others with respect and kindness. A truly eye-opening exhibit.Written June 2, 2016
- Diane K0 contributionsCurrently Photo exhibitWhen we visited, they had a photo exhibit by Hiroshi Sugimoto. It was interesting. Also liked the building that it was housed in. Entry for those over 65 was 2 euros.Written March 1, 2016
- young-fellow0 contributionsReally enjoyed the exhibitionPlanned to visit Fundación Francisco Godia, but it had closed down. However, the gallery has recently been taken over by Fundación MAPFRE, who were showing a (free) exhibition of some works by Van Gogh, Matisse, Seurat, Gauguin, Cézanne, Monet, Derain and Renoir from the Musée d’Orsay and l'Orangerie galleries.Written December 21, 2015
