Symbol of the Spanish power in the 16th century, the site was built to commemorate the victory on the battle of San Quintín. Promoted by King Felipe II, the construction took 21 years to complete and was aimed to be the family vault. Wonder at the architectural design, based on the symmetry and balance according to the humanist Renaissance style. That is the reason why it has been considered the eighth wonder of the world, and still is one of the most singular buildings in Europe. Get to know the building formerly importance and functionality. Visit some of the site highlights, such as the Habsburg Palace, the Royal Library and the Pantheon for both Kings and Infantes. At the end of the guided tour you will have free time to visit the site Gardens and surrounding area. The architectural design was based on the symmetry and the balance according to the humanist Renaissance style. That’s the reason why it has been considered the eighth wonder of the world, and nowadays it is still considered one of the most singular buildings in Europe. The works made in this building by the Spanish architect Juan de Herrera gave place to consider it the paradigm of his architectural style because of its geometrical severity and the predominance of the horizontal lines. The visit includes the Habsburg Palace, the Kings and Princes Mausoleum, the Chapter House, the Basilica and the library. At the end of the guided tour you will be given free time to visit the gardens and the Palace of the Borbon family. At the fixed time you will meet the bus at the Escorial bus station for the way back to Madrid.

We searched for a tour that didn't include the Valley of the Fallen as we read reviews saying you were rushed through the Monastery and we were excited about seeing it so we wanted extra time. You get no extra time - you just get to fend for yourself in a town that was closed when we went. We couldn't even find a coffee shop in the 50 mins we were given before being told to meet the bus at 1pm sharp (which eventually showed up 25 mins late). The weather was terrible -not their fault, traffic was terrible - not their fault. What is their fault is the ridiculously bad logistics and the fact that they really didn't care. It took over an hour to get to the site. Most of that trip (after a little basic info at the beginning) was silent. We were told we would be split into two groups with two guides. No one explained how or why - we just had to figure out for ourselves that the lead guide (or at least the keeper of the radios) only spoke Spanish. So we missed all sorts of instructions that I assume other people got - but I'll never know. The bilingual radios kept defaulting to the Spanish only guide and it took over 40 mins to figure out while our group were left in the heavy wind and sleet to try and stay warm. Why the radios weren't tried and tested on the long bus ride is still a mystery. We were even abandoned just after security for about 15 mins with no explanation. ...still in the freezing cold. When Andrea did show up, the radios started to work, but we were so far behind that we almost ran through the monastery. She spoke like lightening in two languages (good for her) but any other tour we have taken, the guide has paused between languages or said "now for English" or something that would give one's brain a break from trying to decipher what is being said. Even though the radios were finally connected to her - the quality was bad, so we only heard about 1/3 of what she said in English. She rushed us through and did not take us to the most impressive part - the Basilica. We did not go to the Basilica because their incompetence put us behind schedule and there wasn't enough time - we were not allowed to be there without her. Not once did I see her look back to check that the group was together. Not once did she make sure everyone was ok. There are quite a few stairs and at least one person was having trouble navigating them. She didn't care - at all. The risk of getting lost or left behind is quite high. When the bus finally showed up, there was no head count. Our guide was a functionary, not a guide. She walked us through a building and rattled off facts. It was horrible. Arrange travel, get an entry ticket and do the tour that way. We were given no assistance as to what there was in the town, where we could get a coffee - nothing. Just left standing, cold and feeling ripped off. There are lots of tours and tour groups, many have similar tours. Our experience with Julia Travel has been one of our worst. Not even one apology or showing of concern. Why would you not give us 10 minutes in the Basilica and be 10 mins later at the end of the day? At least we would feel we got what we paid for, even if it still wasn't a great experience. WE DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Dear chancer_too, Thank you for taking the time to share this review, It saddens me deeply learning our tour did not live up to your expectations, Even though we strive to provide excellent service, incidents such as the one you mention with the audioguides might occur during one of our tours despite all devices being regularly tested before the tour begins. I apologise for the limited time for the Basilica, delays caused by the traffic on a rainning day might affect the tour development, Nevertheless, your comments show there is room for improvement; please rest assured they will be taken into account to develop the best possible tour for our visitors. Hope you enjoyed the visit to Madrid, Sincerely

Our guide Eduardo was very knowledgeable but we had a bit of an issue. We signed up for the tour that did not include the valley of the fallen so we would get back to Madrid for more sight-seeing there. Unfortunately, we were put on the same bus as those who signed up for the valley of the fallen and we were told we could sit on the bus or explore the city around Escorial. We chose the later and were told they would come back to pick us up at 12:30 so we didn’t have time to have lunch or sightsee much. We sat at the bus station for about an hour and they didn’t come to pick us up until 1:30.
Also our actual tour was very rushed inside Escorial and there were also issue with our headphones so there wasn’t much detail given about the Map room or the following Bourbon chambers. I would have liked to hear more detail about both. I would also like to hear more about how different kings and queens were related.
Overall, Eduardo was very friendly and he did a good job when the technology was working. However, If you are planning to do this tour without the valley of the fallen to save time, as we did, you will be sorely disappointed.
We paid for a tour and only about an hour and a half. Of the tour did we hear details fro our guide. Most of the time we were just waiting around. I also wouldn’t recommend this for kids or for those who don’t already have a deeper knowledge of Spain’s history. It was assumed that we knew things hat were breezed over.

Dear E8356MCsarahj, Thank you for sharing your experience, I regret to learn the tour did not live up to your expectations. I apologize for the delay you suffered on the return to the city, due to a logistic issue on the day of your tour, we strive to provide excellent service but unexpected circumstances might affect our tour organization as happened with audioguide inside the Monastery. I regret you suffered this situation on your Escorial tour. I appreciate your kind comments on our guide Eduardo, Hope you did enjoy your stay in Madrid, Best regards,

Austere very large monastery/palace .
Clearly a Spanish landmark.
Self guided tour is well organized and takes at least two hours.
Tablet virtual guide gives additional information.
Bear in mind that there are lots of up and down stairways and no elevators.
For no good reason indoor photography is prohibited.

As a mother with two children, this was not it. Boring, exhausting for my smallest child and none of us learned anything from here. Stay away!

This is an important historical site and very interesting to visit. It is an easy 1/2 day trip from Madrid and you can be back for lunch. No photography inside. We ended up pairing this with the valley of the fallen (Franco monument to the fallen from the Spanish Civi war) which turned out to be a fascinating counterpoint. We did not have a strong enough guide for El Escorial however and that was frustrating. [we used Julia tours]
