Best tour we had in San Sebastián!
Julen is the greatest! He customized a private tour for us after our original activity had been cancelled last minute by another tour company. He took us to tour the local markets, buy ingredients and then go learn how to make some classic Pintxos. He also gave us a lot of information on other things to go see & do in San Sebastián. We learned so much about the Basque food, culture, history and traditions. We were in Europe for 21 days a did a lot of awesome things, but this was one of the most memorable experiences we had! Thank you Julen. We are back in the U.S now making our own Pintxos almost every weekend to enjoy here at home

        Once in Lifetime
Julen is one of the finest people I've ever met. A Basque native he is a true Renaissance man with a proud passion for his homeland people and culture. From hiking, biking, pintos to a cooking class at a secret gastronomy society, Julen does it all!! But Surfing is his passion, and Nature his religion. Not a tour guide, but a friend. No matter what experience you choose, Any experience with Julen is worth it. A kind humble man you can Trust him to take of care of you and give you a lifelong memory of happiness. Im going back to book another excursion as soon as I learn Spanish, lol Aupa HI!!

Core Memory from our monthlong European holiday!
Julen is an amazing guide and knows all the rich history of the Basque Country. My partner and I were looking for an excursion/day trip in the Basque Country that centered around food, wine, meeting locals, and learning about the life of the folks that live in this beautiful area, and that’s what Julen delivered, plus more! I really appreciated how Julen was incredibly flexible, and we collaborated on the vibe throughout the day! As a person, Julen is incredibly kind, outgoing, and popular! He knew so many people and introduced us to the locals. He was super responsible (while we drank like fish), and we felt super safe and comfortable hanging out with him all day! Do it! Book a day with Julen! You won’t regret it! Best, Mary & Greg

        The Highlight of Our Trip!
Julen’s food tour of San Sebastian was the absolute highlight of our trip! Our whole family had so much fun exploring the city and learning about the unique history and culture, all while trying delicious new food and drinks. It was such a fabulous introduction to the region and an absolute joy to spend time with Julen who was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and a lots of fun. Not only did Julen teach us about the region’s food and drinks, he had lots of great recommendations for our stay and made us feel like friends visiting, not just tourists. I cannot recommend his tours highly enough! Totally worth the splurge and a great way to get to know the surrounding area.

        Surfing & Pinchos!
We were a family of 6 visiting San Sebastián for the first time. Our trip lived up to all of our (high) expectations. We booked a half day with julen & it was certainly a highlight of our time there. We’re a mixed bunch…..parents, young adult, teenagers & a 12 year old! Julen managed to keep us all very happy & entertained. As well as being an excellent guide & ambassador for the Basque region he’s also great company & fun to be around. We spent a few hours surfing - first timers. Some of us did better than others but we all loved it! Afterwards Julen brought us to the best pincho bars in the old town. He showed us how the locals eat & drink. Was really enjoyable & it also meant that for the rest of our stay we made better food choices. Would thoroughly recommend booking one of the packages on offer. Money well spent!

Julian was beyond fabulous ❣️He and our experience exceeded our expectations. He was fun, great teacher of cooking and Basque information. We loved being a participant and going to the market and learning how to pick our ingredients. Not to forget our coffee, churros, and chocolate while getting acquainted. AMAZING. WE CANNOT RECOMMEND JULIAN ENOUGH!!!!

Yummy tour experience- 5 of 5 stars
We had the most amazing day with Aupa HI! It was laid back but interesting, with excellent food, wine and many local specialties that you would not get to know without a local. If you don‘t want to be rushed from one place to another and would maybe normally not go for a tour - this is your tour!

        Basque Country Experience
Basque Country, the people and the culture are all very special. Julen, our guide, was also VERY SPECIAL. Do yourself a favor and experience this great place with the best guide we have ever hired, anywhere. If I could give him 6 STARS I would.

        Simply Superb
For anyone out there who is passionate about the prospect of learning not only about how to cook a tradition of food which has reached a peak in the European culinary world, but also learning about the culture and history of the Basque region, this class is for you. Julen, our instructor, made learning how to cook a six course meal accessible to those who had no experience cooking and exciting enough that those who are regulars in the kitchen to be captivated for the entire time. The cooking experience in and of itself would have been enough to make this class worthwhile. I have yet to talk about the dishes, all of which were delightful and many of which were surprising. It’s always a treat to be proven wrong when it comes to food. Many of the dishes we had were classics, the basque cheesecake for example, however, the dishes I found to be the best and most exciting were those I had never heard of or never thought to try. Thanks to Julen and this class I left San Sebastián with a new set of tools in my culinary and happy than ever for getting to spend time with such an amazing person.

        Best Day Ever
It's hard to put into words how incredible our day with Julen was. Since we went in the off season, we had a private tour. He picked us up promptly and we were instantly friends. His warm and welcoming personality radiated his passion for Basque culture. The 1-hour drive into the mountains passed quickly with beautiful scenery and Julen's conversation. We visited a small traditional family bakery in the hills above the village where three generations of bakers were making bread together on a busy Saturday! Their bread was so tasty and made with love. Next, an organic family cheese farm welcomed us with open arms and tons of adorable animals to pet (sheep, goats, horses, kittens, dogs!). We shared a snack together and felt like we were hanging out with old friends. We walked to their gastronomic society for a coffee break. Yes, we lucked out with gorgeous weather. We took a pastoral walk in the foothills before driving back up the mountain to another gastronomic society. There, we met Julen's father and cooked an incredibly tasty meal together. We had bread from the bakery, and chorizo and cheese from the cheese farm. Local Txakoli wine free flowed. We ended our meal with Julen's dad's favorite digestive liquor. After the big meal, we learned how to play handball to wake ourselves up from our food coma. The drive back to San Sebastián was equally wonderful and beautiful. We went home with a bag full of incredible local food. We aren't typically people who like tours. But this one exceeded all expectations and provided exactly what a tour should: an experience that can't be repeated anywhere else. Don't wait to book this tour. Do it. Right now. :)

Spend a day with a friend
We had the best day with Julen exploring the Basque countryside and tasting local foods. We were exploring the Basque Country and Julen was kind enough to begin our tour picking us up in Bilbao then dropping us off at days end in our hotel in San Sebastián. This greatly simplified our travels as we had no desire to rent a car just for a day and trains and other transport weren’t great. We started with a quick jaunt to see the amazing San Juan Gaztelugatxe from a perfect viewpoint followed by a perfectly timed visit to an artisanal bakery rediscovering the traditional recipes an techniques for bread. There we had a “light snack” with hot bread, salumi, cheese and cider. After a pleasant visit we moved on to a farm making beautiful cheeses and met the cheese makers and watched the process. The grand finale was a very traditional Basque lunch at a mend’s cooking club above a small village. Julen is a real people-person and delights in showcasing the local foods and traditions. Julen’s slogan-the tour for non tour lovers-is apt. Spend some time immersed in the Basque lifestyle and culture with your new friend in the Basque Country. You’ll be very glad you did!

        Highlight of our trip!
This was the experience of a lifetime! If you ever want to immerse yourself into the culture of pure basque living this is the tour you have to take. By way of a short beautiful hike in the woods Julen took us to his friend’s farm where we watched the full cheese making process from sheep to package. We then sat down with the farm owners in their kitchen and enjoyed a typical basque breakfast of jamon, omelette, bread and of course the most amazing cheese. The farmer’s could not speak any English but we were able to communicate through the language of wine, lol! After the farm we stopped at another farmer friend and tried his homemade cider. Then off to a bakery to pick up bread and dessert and then finally to Julen’s friend’s txoko where we ate an amazing basque dish prepared by Julen. We laughed and chatted for hours with his wonderful friend and did not want the day to end. Julen was an amazing guide and we now have a friend for life in San Sebastián! Thanks Julen!

        Amazing Mountain Experience
This is one of my favorite travel experiences. Julen took us from the coast of San Sebastian into the mountains and his hometown. We were able to meet cheese makers bread makers and even a beekeeper (I am a beekeeper in my hometown!) . He was incredibly helpful accommodating and knowledgeable . We had a delicious breakfast with artisans as well as lunch with his family. This is the experience we came home to tell all of our friends and family about. We can HIGHLY recommend this tour!

        Amazing!!
This trip was without a doubt the highlight of our 2 week holiday!! I rarely leave reviews, but in this case it would be a so not to. If you want to learn about the actual culture of San Sebastián and don’t want to have the feeling of ‘traditional Tourguide’ you should definitely book this trip. He’s the best there is!!!

Julen from Aupa Hi! was a great host for our recent trip to San Sebastian. He is extremely knowledgeable on local food, activities, surf, and Basque culture. Furthermore, he is both professional and gregarious. My friend and I were looking specifically to explore a number of different surf spots and Julen knew right where to take us. He would pick us up in his awesome retro van in the morning, take us for a tasty local breakfast, and then off to check out different surf breaks. While we spent most of the time in the water, Julen always offered alternative activities to check out such as local festivals. 5 stars, Julen!

I spent the first morning with Julen in a fishing village where their annual festival was kicking off. You had to get there by boat and then had a blast with the locals running with the Bulls. Not as chaotic as Pamplona but it was crazy non the less. From there were had the pleasure to visit the preservation project of an early whaling ship from Basque Country, the San Juan at Albola.

Day 2 was a drive to Basque Country and the wine region of Rioja. We stopped at 2 great wineries, Julen tried to arrange tour guides who spoke a little English which helped me a great deal. See some of the amazing pictures below. It truly was a fantastic time and without Julen I would have never even known of the options available to you while visiting San Sebastián.

Aupa Hi is a great guide, someone raised in the area who is kind and outgoing so has many friends in the area and can customize your experience to exactly what you want to do in Basque Country. I highly recommend Julen and will point all of my friends his way if they were to pass through the area.

Julen was outstanding as a guide, he is such an easy-going, likeable guy that going on his tour was just like meeting up with a mate and going surfing. He is incredibly knowledgable and passionate about the city of San Sebastian and the surrounding Basque country. He knew the best place to go for pintxos on the way home, and all the secret spots that would not be possible to find on your own. I cannot recommend his tours enough and I hope to one day return to San Sebastian and have a drink with him.

Julen took me to a surf spot that even lots of locals would not know. The waves were amazing and a 4 hour surf session became unforgettable. They were the best waves I have ever surfed for long time. He then took me to a local restaurants where I had fresh fish from the sea. It was delicious. Julen loves Basque Country from bottom heart and is genuinely wanting to share what he loves.

Julen provided a unique, insightful experience that I would not have been able to do on my own. We went outside of San Sebastián, to the village in which he grew up and had the opportunity to connect with local artisans. I learned about Basque culture and experienced a sense of community by being invited into peoples’ homes to share in their lives through meals, drinks, and sharing stories. We covered a wide range of activities- from harvesting wild berries to Basque cheese making, a local gastronomic society, learning the game of handball, and taking in the beautiful coastline. Julen shared an insightful perspective on Basque culture, and I left knowing that I didn’t just go on a tour but I instead made a friend. I would absolutely recommend people looking to learn about Basque beyond the surface to connect with Julen and allow him to share some truly unique experiences with you!!

We had a great time with Julen! He is a Basque guy at heart and showed us all the cool places around the Basque Country, we didn't even know existed: local villages, festivities and restaurants, and the best surf spots in the Spanish and French part. With his van Julen took us everywhere we wanted to go, and he was happy to show us whatever we wanted to see.
      Thanks a lot, dude!
See you next time for sure!
