Experience the ‘Txotx!’ ritual, taste natural Basque cider and take a trip back to our origins! Would you like to enjoy a cider house but you don’t know how to get to one? This tour is the solution. We will pick you up in San Sebastian so that you can learn, with the help of our guide, the secrets of this thousand-year-old drink very closely linked to the Basque Country and its culture and gastronomy. You will visit the apple orchards, the farmhouse presses/stores, the cider-making areas, the cellars and, naturally, you taste natural home-made cider as we Basques make it: in the bottle and through the ritual called "Txotx". ¡Txoootx! is a call to taste Natural Cider directly from the barrels while you enjoy a Traditional Cider House Menu. Through the Ritual of Txotx you will taste cider from different barrels in the cellars of our cider houses while you enjoy a traditional cider house menu. Afterwards, we will return to San Sebastian so you can carry on enjoying our land.

      Venturing beyond San Sebastián
A fabulous day to see the countryside beyond San Sebastián. Loved the visit to a family run cheese farm...delightful exposure to a hard working young woman’s passion for her family’s cheese business. The traditional cider house was a fantastic experience, great food and genuine Basque atmosphere! Our guide was passionate about his country. Would thoroughly recommend this tour to those who would like to go beyond the city experience! Thank you!

This is a highly adviceable visit which you will no doubt enjoy. Very comfortable private transport and Izaskun, the guide, is very outgoing and pleasant. The menu might not be worth it if you don’t eat a lot.

      Cider Tour, San Sebastion
We didn’t expect to go on a cider tour when visiting San Sebastián however we were pleasantly surprised by the ‘Sagareda Route’. Amaia & Alazne were our enthusiastic, friendly guides keen to promote the Basque heritage of cider making. There are over 100 cider houses in the region. First stop Santa Klara, a guest house on a clifftop, with the most exquisite view over the Bay of Biscay, to taste the local cider with anchovy pintox. Nothing like the tinned variety. Pintox is the Basque version of tapas. Next stop the cider house ‘Anota’. Lunch was a traditional Cider House menu of, cod omelette. The proprietor did not let us leave any on the serving plate. I’m sure she was saying, “get it down you” in Basque. Followed by fried cod with peppers, grilled t bone steak (shared) which we watched cooking on an open grill. It was tender and delicious. This was followed by Idiazabel cheese, quince jelly and walnuts all washed down with natural cider which comes with an age-old cider ritual. The proprietor of the cider house cries ‘txotx’ pronounced ‘jodge’. The punters head to the cask room, forming an orderly que, a tap is opened on a cask and everyone stands in-line with cider glasses (extra wide circumferences) catching two fingers worth of cider in the glass at a distance of 20 to 30 centimetres. It is one metre in Asturias, a very important difference. This aerates the cider, which improves the taste. This ritual continues throughout lunch, cutlery is downed, lunch put on hold and off you go for more fingerfuls of cider. It was great fun, steeped in cider and tradition. It cost 59 euros, from 11.15 to 4.15 and well worth the money.

We had a fabulous experience from the moment we were picked up! Our guide was brilliant and engaging. The cider house tour was interesting and we got to do the cider pour! The meal was delicious and you can drink as much cider as you can manage. We are a family with young kids and they do kids menu and also have vegan options on the menu. Highly recommend

We had a great experience with Maddalen as our guide. She picked us up and dropped us off right in San Sebastián and it was obvious to see the pride she has for her region. She gave a thorough and very fun tour of the cider house called Saizar. I can't recommend this place enough. The cider was outstanding and the food was so delicious. The love and care that goes into this process is truly unreal. It was very special to be able to take part in a tradition that dates back so many centuries.

A different tour we had planned on cancelled last minute and we found this tour the day before and signed up, not sure what to expect. Our group had a GREAT time! Our tour guide, Izaskun, picked us up promptly and even on the drive out of town started telling us about the history of the areas we were driving through. She was very knowledgable about cider and cider houses but also gave us more insight about history and culture of the Basque region. She did a great job of showing us around the orchard and the cidery. Sampling cider is an experience in and of itself and the food was great (so much food!). I don't think there is anyway we could have gone to the cidery on our own and gotten as much out of the experience.

At the end, Izaskun offered to drop us off in Pasaia so we could go to the Albaola boat museum and showed us where to pick up the bus back to San Sebastian. Definitely worth the time to check out the museum and it was very easy to get back to San Sebastian on the bus.

We could not have been happier with this experience and highly recommend it! We only wish we had been able to do one of the longer experiences that are offered on other days and at other times of the year.

That's what we learned to say cheers in Basque.
If you are a foodie, this place is not to be missed.
We were privileged to have Izaskun as our guide.
It was a nice drive from our accommodation in Gros and Izaskun regaled us with the history and events in the region.
We were very fortunate to visit the Aburuza Cider House.
Even though it was the evening tour, we were still able to take a look at at the cider processing area and gained a good understanding of the method.
Then it was dinner. This was substantial. Please bring along a large appetite. First course was cod omelette, then hake with peppers. All the time a super crusty loaf of bread on the table to accompany. Then the hero of the dish was this humongous steak (txuleta) to be shared. Be forewarned, they like it rare. But so tender and flavourful.
Then cheese and quince to finish off.
But the highlight for us was going into the cider room that had several large vats. You bring your glass and get ready to catch the arcing stream of cider when the staff opens up the tap. This allows the cider to aerate.
For us it was such a novel way to taste the Cider and experience the camaraderie with other cider lovers.
Izaskun was a wonderful host and really made our night super special and unforgettable.

A last minute booking and I am so glad I did this! The tour was by the wonderful Mya who took us around the Saizar cider house. Full of knowledge and able to explain the process really well. The self pouring of cider was brilliant and the sit down meal was delicious.
Eating and drinking with strangers from around the world but they didn’t feel like strangers once the cider flowed!

I am not a fan of cider and I loved this tour. Our guide, Izaskun, was simply wonderful and shared all of her local knowledge about cider, cider houses, and Basque culture in general. A quick drive from San Sebastian takes you to a lovely little orchard/cider house where the process is thoroughly explained and the history of cider making and its importance to the Basque culture is shared. We met one of the owners of the cider house and had a delicious 4-course meal served to us. For non-cider drinkers, there was water and fresh apple juice. It was a lovely afternoon and a unique experience. I

When I came to the basque region I was told that the cider house was not to be missed if you want to enjoy a traditional culinary experience. My guide was Izaskun, and she was wonderful! As a member of the Association of Cider in the Basque region, she shared very intimate knowledge with me that I found to be very fascinating. We took a tour of the orchard and she explained the cider process. I had the opportunity to view the cellar and have fresh cider from there! The food was absolutely delicious! Defiinitely not to be missed with in Donostia!
