My husband and I took a tour of the French Basque countryside with Ander, and we had a wonderful time. We visited the villages of Sara, Espelette, and St. Jean Pied de Port. Ander gave us great insight into the culture and history of the Basque region, and explained some of the similarities and differences between the Spanish and French Basque regions. He also offered to take pictures of us throughout the day to make sure that we could have some beautiful couples-photos. Tip: Remember to bring your passports! You are crossing into a different country, and sometimes the French government sets up checkpoints.

An unqualified recommendation. Ander is among the very best guides you could ever hope for. He was born and raised in Basque Country (San Sebastian). He is very friendly, courteous, fun (yet extremely professional), articulate (speaks 5 languages fluently and articulately, including English), extremely knowledgeable of the area, history, culture, best sights, restaurants, bars (Pintxos), etc. We had last minute itinerary changes and he graciously accommodated our needs. My wife and I were very interested in the Basque history, culture and sights (I have distant ancestors from the Basque country) and he exceeded our highest hopes & expectations. He chauffeured us in a new Mercedes van which was very comfortable. We experienced our tour in every way: sights, sounds, food, culture, history... extraordinary for 1 day. I am certain there could not have been a better gentleman to guide us through our day in the Basque Country. We had an amazing day with Ander in tge Basque lands. His knowledge of history and the area was great. We enjoyed sampling local cheeses and pickles from the farmers and Ander bought us a great cherry pie baked by a local lady in one of the villages. It was simply a fab day and would recommend to anyone!

Incredible experience! We are a couple from New York who did 3 tours with Ander - a tour of the city of San Sebastián & pinxtos, a tour of the Basque countryside (including the BEAUTIFUL town of Elizondo), and a day trip to Bilbao. Our group of 4 wine lovers highly anticipated our trip to Rioja, since our we had to cancel our trip back in 2020 due to the pandemic. Nina was fantastic in booking the trip, helping to customize our winery stops as well as our lunch option. On the day of the tour, we were warmly greeted at our hotel in San Sebastian by Ander. He was due to be our guide back in 2020, so it was 3 years in the making! Once we were on our way, Ander provided helpful information, background, and history during the whole drive to the Rioja wine country. We began our tour in the town of Haro with stops at few of the smaller producers. Ander was incredibly flexible adding in extra stops here and there as we had extra time. We then headed to two fantastic smaller wineries in the countryside. Both were quite unique, using some newer methods and techniques, while respecting the traditions of the region. We had a delicious, relaxing lunch where we were able to try some local specialties. Finally, we rounded out a memorable day with a tour of the quaint town of La Guardia and a quick stop to take in the architectural sights of a few modern winery buildings. Even though this was a repeat trip to Rioja for some of the group, it was an entirely new, exciting, and unforgettable experience for us all. Ander was unfailingly informative and engaged throughout the entire trip. Ander and Nina were also incredibly helpful with tips and suggestions for the rest of our time in Basque country. Their cheat sheet of Pinxto bars was invaluable for our Pinxto crawl later in the week. The Go Basque team really made us feel like we were part of the Basque country family. We hope to return for future tours with the team.

We ventured into parts of the countryside we never would have found on our own. Really enjoyed hearing a local’s perspective on Basque culture. We thought we were joining a tour group of about half a dozen people but it turned out to be a private tour with just my mother and myself - what a pleasant surprise! The scenery of the Basque Coast was just breathtaking. It was worth visiting there whether one had watched Game of Thrones or not. Our guide Ander was wonderful, very friendly and considerate. It felt like being guided by a knowledgeable local friend. It was very interesting learning about the traditions, history and culture of the Basque country from Ander. Knowing more about both the land (and the sea) and the people really made the trip so much more meaningful and memorable. Ander's colleague, Nina, was also amazingly kind. She gave us a detailed list of pintxo bars that they liked, as well as suggestions of pintxos and drinks, which were truly great recommendations. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in San Sebastián and this tour was the highlight of our entire trip. We hope to return to the Basque Country in the future and explore the region further with Nina and Ander.

In early November we did the Rioja Full Experience Private Tour with the company Go Basque. From the very beginning, when I contacted them regarding booking our tour, they could not have been more helpful. Unlike many tours, no payment was required to book and confirm the tour, but full payment would be required one month before, which was fine with us. I dealt with Nina throughout the entire booking process, and she was unfailingly helpful with my myriad of questions. She helped us decide which wineries to visit, which type of tour to take and assisted in explaining what sort of food we could expect on our included lunch in a winery. When the day arrived our driver, Ander, picked us up at our San Sebastian hotel right on time. Ander was simply wonderful and ensure that we had a fantastic day. Nothing was too much trouble; every question was answered and was truly the perfect guide. The wineries chosen were incredible, exactly the type of things that we wanted to experience in the Rioja region. Ander also gave us plenty of stops of photo opportunities of things that we were interested in. The included lunch was quite delicious and there was a huge amount of food. Before the day started, Ander warned that we would probably sleep on the way back. I inwardly scoffed as I never sleep in cars, or in the day, and certainly not with strangers. Well, this was a different day! We had so many wine tastings that also included lovely nibbles of jamon and cheese, followed by the huge lunch then a guided walk around La Guardia. Once we got in the car for the long journey back to San Sebastian, both my husband and I fell into a peaceful sleep. We had an amazing day and highly recommend Go Basque, and particularly Nina and Ander if you want the perfect private Rioja wine tour.

What a wonderful day we spent with Ander visiting a few of the many nearby medieval Basque villages. Our private tour with Ander has honestly been the most memorable part of our visit to San Sebastian. We especially appreciated the door-to-door service and the easy conversation with Ander, who was raised in San Sebastian. We learned not only about the areas we visited but about what life is like growing up, living and working here. We never felt rushed and Ander was open to stopping anywhere we liked. Our first stop was Sare, known for its delicious Gateau Basque (cake) and where fronton (jai alai) is the favorite pastime. Traveling the lush countryside to our next stop in Espelette, Ander pointed out the raised wooden huts built on towers used to trap migrating wood pigeons. Espelette is known for its production of espelette red peppers. The entire village has white houses with red or green shutters. It looked like a fairy tale town built as a temple to the little red peppers. The 17th century Basque church had a single aisle with wooden galleries and the scent of old wood. Ander knows all the places where you can taste the local cheese, chocolate or pate. Finally on to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port which is the starting point and the most challenging part of the Camino de Santiago. The streets are steep and cobbled, dotted with pilgrim lodgings and many shops. The “way” is well-marked with directional arrows embedded into the cobblestone streets and signs taped to poles.
