- Mr_Sheldrake0 contributionsA Wonderful ExperienceA very personal, fascinating tour of Malaga with some good wine and a lot of great observations and conversations. Eye-opening in how the city has evolved and Southern Spain continues to change, and the food was great too!Written December 4, 2024
- S5672DBdavidm0 contributionsEnjoyable and interesting food tour in the centre of MalagaOur tour guide Javi gave us a very enjoyable and interesting tour. He made us all welcome, looked after us and was very knowledgeable about the foods and wines that we tasted. The tour was well worthwhile and I would happily recommend to others. Javi was excellent!Written December 4, 2024
- TerryB19660 contributionsA fabulous evening with friends.Highly recommend this tour, we went as a group consisting of 3 couples and were joined by 4 ladies who had booked separately. José was our guide for the evening, and he was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and informative about the local food scene and origins of the food we were eating. Started with an aperitif in the oldest pub in town, a busy little place with all the wines in casks behind the bar. Our second stop was a charming place that specialised in cold cuts of meat and local wine/sherry. We sampled around 6 different meats and had a glass of sherry/port, all very tasty and probably not what I would have picked had I not been guided by José. We then moved on to a beautiful place, a square surrounded with orange trees where we had the main part of the meal. Bread & olives, sliced fried aubergines with a choice of red or white wine, followed by pork loin in a red wine sauce and patatas fritas (chips) the whole thing was delicious. Our final stop was a 10 minute stroll through town to a small restaurant just behind the cathedral. Once again we had the choice of a local red or white wine and a selection of tapas, we had ham croquettes and the gazpacho, washed down with another small glass of wine. The experience overall was excellent, and our guide José was a major contributor. *Please note that the menu was based upon our group’s dietary preferences (not many wanted seafood dishes) so if you make them aware in advance they will cater towards your preferences.Written November 30, 2024
- Connector027826730840 contributionsWorth every pennyNot only did we all have a great time, but the food we made was delicious. I just finished converting the paella recipe into American measurements and plan on cooking it in the near future. Remember to purchase the Salmorreta because the closest thing we have to it in the States is Sofrito and it's not the same. Javi and Pepo were the best!Written November 30, 2024
- Joelle S0 contributionsThanksgiving Paella! What a great way to spend our Thanksgiving day. Anais was our tour guide, and she was awesome. We began the tour by walking thru the central market. Anais gave us great insights into the market and its importance to the community of Malaga. We then took a short walk to the kitchen and started with fantastic olive oil tasting. We made sangria, gazpacho, paella, and our special dessert churros. We made all dishes with fresh ingredients, and the chefs were first rate. The kitchen was clean and we were able to take our leftover paella home. It was a wonderful afternoon of fellowship, cooking and learning. We would highly recommend this tour. Thank you Anais!Written November 29, 2024

- 922andrzejb0 contributionsMálaga Wine & Tapas tourEverybody who have time in the evenings in Málaga, likes wine degustacions and great athmosphere should attend this tour. I've taken my tour on 23rd November 2024. With Fernando we've met 4 very famous bars and restaurants in Málaga, including famous Antigua Casa de Guardia, where you can drink the sweet red wine straight from the barrel. In addition to the 5 wines which you are testing, you will get soup, 4 tapas and a part of paella to eat. If you are not really into the red wine, you can choose to taste the white wine instead. The guide is a very kind person, explaining everything in english and spanish. The trips worths the money you are paying. When I will be next time in Málaga, I will for sure take this trip once again. AndrewWritten November 27, 2024
- EdenWedding0 contributionsA great introduction to MalagaWe booked the tour for our first evening in Malaga. Fernando was great from start to finish. There were 12 of us in total - a mixture of couples, friends and singles, of different nationalities. Fernando managed to properly engage with everyone in the group, and made sure people were happy throughout the experience. We visited four different tapas bars (we had to miss one out due to the flooding) where we were able to sample different tapas and local drinks. Fernando gave us plenty of information about what we were eating and drinking and arranged alternatives for us without any fuss. He also suggested other bars and restaurants we might like to try. It was a great evening, with a perfect host. We would definitely recommend the tour to others.Written November 25, 2024

- S8749WAantonh0 contributionsPaella cookingClasswe had booked a paella cooking course at Spain Food Sherpas. On the day and time we had to go to an agreed point (secret lingerie 😀) in Malage. Felipe showed up there and after the group introduced each other Felipe took us to a market hall. There he told the history of the market hall and we walked past various market stalls where we were also allowed to taste. This was already a very nice start! Then on to the cooking location. It started with an olive oil tasting. Then Sangria was made which went into the refrigerator to be served with dinner. Then made gazpacho, which also disappeared into the refrigerator. Then make the paella in pairs. We were 8 people, 2 Canadians, 2 Americans, 1 Australian, 1 German and us, 2 Dutch. How nice to cook with strangers who soon no longer feel like strangers to you. Very nice people who received excellent guidance. Delicious paellas were prepared in pairs while enjoying a glass of wine. While the paella was covered for the final cooking, churos were still being made. Then sit at the table and enjoy the food and of course the Sangria! Nice conversations and delicious paella food, time disappeared. Took pictures and showed each other pictures of their own vegetable gardens. Very fun to do this cooking workshop. Highly recommended! You will feel at home at Spain Food Sherpas! You get a big ten from us.Written November 20, 2024

We also enjoyed tastings at three outstanding restaurants. I highly recommend this adventure!Written November 20, 2024

This was our first walking food tour and we are so pleased we did it. Felipe was our guide and he was brilliant, so knowledgeable and informative. The market we visited was fantastic and the people so friendly. We tried tapas dishes in a number of different spots, and ended in Taberna la Gloria which was fabulous, a great bar which we are hoping to go back to. All of the food and wine we tried was fresh and of an excellent standard, would definitely recommend.

Excellent food tour. Felipe was knowledgeable, pleasant, informative and spoke excellent English. Recommend highly. We will most certainly take a Sherpa tours in the future. Also they were very accommodating in allowing us to switch from the seaside tour to the city tour when it looked like there would be rain. Again, doing the tour with Felipe as the guide exceeded expectations.

Last week my husband and I booked a trip with Spain Food Sherpa in Malaga. We’ve done food tours before in other countries and coming to Spain expectations were obviously high.
Along with another Norwegian couple, an English couple, two Scottish ladies and a young couple from Germany we met our Sherpa Javi and this is a five star rating.
Javi was great; we learned a lot about Malaga and the Spanish culture that we didnt know from before. We had four stops a long the way: ofc the Mercado Atarazanas, a more of a bistropub, a chiq restaurant and a traditional tapas place. We had some lovely tapas.. the fries green peppers, anchovies, artichockes, Spanish soup and croquettes, Spanish omelette and fried aspargus, some delicious salted nuts and olives, jamon ham and cheese.. and drinks also! Wine for those to like others could choose between soft drinks and water, all included.
I read that some customers didnt feel they goot enough food and that the prize is to high. That is not my impression, we was full in the end of the tour. The price is quite right as you get excellent and authentic food!
We endes the tour with tips from Javi and a brochure of where to go.. excellent Food Sherpa Tips. This is very clever as you avoid the «tourist traps». Javi speaks perfect English and is an outgoing, lovely host.
Today my husband and I actually went back to the Atarazanas for some lovely green, salted peppers for snack and to one of the other restaurant we visited to try their paella.
Thank so much to Javi and the Spain Food Sherpa for an unforgettable day in Malaga!

Unfortunately apart from a couple of dishes the food was a little disappointing. Elise was knowledgeable on the history of Malaga which we found interesting however the tour is marketed as a food tour and therefore should be the centerpiece and not a secondary. They need to increase their food budget the last restaurant we visited was underwhelming. Did accommodate pescitarian.

Hi!
Thank you for taking a moment to share your thoughts with us. We appreciate the kind words about Elise, she truly is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Malaga's rich history!
It saddens us to hear that the culinary aspect of your tour didn't fully meet your expectations. With every tour, we strive to showcase the true essence of Malaga's local cuisine, which at times can be a departure from what some of our guests might be familiar with.
It's important to note that our food tours, especially the one you attended that included a comprehensive visit to Atarazanas Food Market, are carefully designed with a focus on local gastronomy. The market visit, in particular, is meant to immerse our guests in the vibrant heart of Malaga's food scene. Our Taste of Malaga Tour was chosen among the 15 best food activities in the world last year.
Your feedback regarding the last restaurant and our overall food budget is noted but we disagree. Our partner establishments are chosen for their authenticity and the wonderful local dishes they serve.
Thank you for acknowledging our effort to accommodate your pescetarian preference. We strive to cater to all dietary needs, so we're pleased we were able to meet yours.

We had a wonderful evening tapas walking tour in Malaga with Javi who pointed out interesting historical insights about the city and took us to a range of well-curated stops. We sampled wines and wide range of foods including at some historic locations. He also pointed out other recommended restaurants and shared a printed guide with locations. this tour made us want to return to Malaga for a longer trip in future.

We met Felipe punctually at the meeting point which was explained in detail in our email. The whole experience was fabulous from the start at the market to the three restaurants where we tried and tested a wide variety of tapas dishes. Felipe explained the origin and traditions of dishes with infectious enthusiasm and my husband will definitely come back with a group of friends. Thank you for a lovely day

Our Tour Guide Felipe was extraordinary: friendly, knowledgeable and gave us in addition history and great tips for dinning!
We started in the market with a table only for us with variety of food and a vermouth, touring the market was amazing including sampling.
Then we went to other three places and while touring, Felipe was eager to answer questions and more history and food tips. While speaking of food included history and food preparation.
The other places it was a ham and cheese degustation in an amazing typical place,
Next, a fancy restaurant (EME) with amazing two more tapas of soup and ham croquette! If you are not full yet after all good sampling we ended in a old building restaurant with two more tapas (one a beef pincho).
In general an amazing tapas sampling tour that feel like a full meal and beverage. I highly recommend this tour! Please ensure you do not eat before :)

My friend and I had the pleasure of doing a tapas food tour with Spain Food Sherpas last week and it was fantastic! Highly recommended. Our guide Felipe was knowledgeable, friendly and told us so much about the history of the city and the heritage of the food and ingredients we were sampling. We had some great dishes that were new to us (Malaga figs with almonds, Malaga salad) and some favourites (padron peppers, Jamón Ibérico etc) and were taken around Malaga's historic market and some traditional delis and restaurants to sample the different foods, washed down with wine or other local drinks (such as sangria & vermouth). The 3.5 hours flew by but what was great that we weren't always walking or on our feet, it was a very relaxed afternoon, with four stops and lots of time to sit, relax and get to know our fellow guests (there was a cruise ship in town, so our group comprised of Northern Irish, English, Canadian, German and American people.

What is the easiest way to get from the cruise terminal to the meeting point for the tour? How much travel time?
Written September 24, 2019
It’s a 15 min walk from port to start of tour. Across a two lane motorway by pedestrian crossing and the shop should be on a corner of the main pedestrian street.
