A very basic harbor tour on a Mississippi style paddle wheel boat (could be an original, not sure), beautiful two interior decks, but in the end, you wind up sitting on the top deck which is all steel with cafeteria style steel table seating and one waiter serving way too many. By the time the drinks arrived, the tour was half order, and we were one of the first to order. The Hamburg harbor is full of smaller canals, but with a large boat like this you only enter one of the largest canals and get to see the largest container ships in the harbor. There is so much more worth seeing, but not on this or any of the larger tour ships. The rest of the trip is on the Elbe River, everything interesting, ranging from mansions and a beach area to the docks where cruise ships disembark. But you get to see the exact same thing for a lot less, or for free if you have a day city transportation ticket, which includes the boats that go up and down the Elbe River (along with subways and buses), with a stop on the other side as well (where Airbus has an assembly plant and where there are a lot of apple and other fruit farms, restaurants, things to see). You can take a bike on the public boats and get off on the other side to ride around or take a bus to another stop that has a public ferry crossing back over to the city side. Point is, if you really want to see the harbor, take one of the small open deck boats, not this one or any of the other large ones. And yes, if it rains, the paddle boat has a very nice interior where you can sit, but you see very little to nothing through the windows. It is handled well Covid wise, you have to have a negative test or vaccination card (almost every business in Hamburg excepts a PDF copy of your CDC card), and right where you buy your ticket for the paddle boat, and all the other boats, there is free rapid testing available, free even for non-residents, with results in less than 20 minutes. No matter what boat you wind up using, check the forecast - if it calls for rain, do an indoor activity that day, like the Miniature Train Exhibit, skip the boat for another day. PS - all the announcements on this boat about what you see, etc., are in German, with no other language options. If you don't speak German, you are missing 50% of what this trip is about. Another reason to look for another boat option if you don't speak the language.

We found this boat tour on TA. It was a little hard to find the office on Brueke 1, but we found it. Although the picture showed a paddle wheel boat, we took one of the smaller ones as the paddle wheel only ran once in a while. Regardless, we really enjoyed the tour, which lasted 1 hour. We got to see houses on the river, Hamburg beach and several large container ships. It was really cool!
Overall, a great boat tour. Our only recommendation would be for the company to highlight items in both German and English. They definitely had enough time, as the downloadable English app was a bit clunky to use. Anyway, we recommend you try it.

The Elbe is not so beautiful. Very industrial. They put me on a boat with all German narration even though it was clear that I did not speak German. Didn’t discover this until we were underway. Unless you want to see shipping containers, skip this trip!

We are sorry that you did not like the Port of Hamburg and the Elbe. A boat trip through the port of Hamburg is not comparable to a gondola tour in Venice. The port of Hamburg is the second largest port in Europe and it is logical that container terminals with their huge ships, cranes and tugboats can be found here. But that is exactly what makes this tour interesting and unique. Regarding the translation of the tour in English, you have received the instructions for downloading the app for translation via email, and in addition, on each ship there are also posters with information and the activation code for the app on the ship walls.
Unfortunately, as in this case, very often this information is not read, which leads to problems of this type. And this cost us a bad review like yours.

Unfortunately the whether was awful, raining and cold. This is why one has to check the whether well before doing this trip. The harbour was incredible, big, massive. To see the huge cranes, the colossal cargo ships and the way they are loading by these cranes were very interesting.
If you are interested in machines you must do this trip.
The cappuccino they served before the boat leaves, was terrible. They charged 4 Euros for this. :-(

Is the trip on a paddle steamer?

Yes, most likely a replica, but a good one, very nice authentic looking interiors. Nonetheless, for the view, everyone is on the top deck, which is steel absent any charm. On my trip, the wooden bar on the second floor interior was closed, so the only service was on the top steel deck.
