We had a nice tour guide. The tour is different now with the changes to transportation in Germany. We had a larger group than was advertised. All of us had to take the train instead of the smaller tour bus. It was difficult to keep the group together as 3 different tour guides were all traveling at the same time. Our tour guide tried very hard to give us information regarding the trip as well as historical information. Had we known that the castle only allows 1/2 hour inside, we would have booked the additional castle tour on the same day.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review Jackie. Our Neuschwanstein castle tour is either by train or by bus depending on the time of year and group size. Typically the group size is larger if we take the bus though, not smaller. This year we have been experiencing busier trains due to the introduction of discounted monthly rail tickets. The castle tour is only 30mins which is why our guides try to offer a comprehensive tour throughout the day. It sounds like you still found some value in the tour though which is great.

Lana was our tour guide for the day. This is a 10 hour tour, which includes 4 hours on a bus (to and from) and 6 hours of sightseeing and the tour itself.

Once we arrived at the area of the castle via the charter bus included in the tour price, we had 1 hour to eat lunch in the small village, plenty of options there for various budgets.
After lunch, the tour began officially with a 1.5 hour guided tour up to the castle filled with interesting facts and stories about Ludwig II and the castle he built. Very beautiful hike up with some nice views.
Once at the castle, the tour is temporarily handed over to the official castle tour, which includes a guided tour of the castle inside. This tour is short but insightful for those interested in the time period.
Following the castle tour, we were received our own time to explore the area outside the castle before heading back to the city
Be prepared to walk and climb stairs. If mobility is a concern, there are other options to reach the castle from the village via carriage or bus, but you will miss out on much of the tour this way.
If rain is forecasted, BRING AN UMBRELLA. Rain jacket is not enough, the walk up or down to/from the castle is at least 20 min

The meeting point was difficult to find, strongly recommend they review the current online description. Otherwise it was a lovely trip, our guide Mat was perfect, knowledgeable, had good humor and didn’t over talk like those guides that keep on going the whole 9 hours ( our trip was that long). We all met infront of the travel agent then walked to the train station, stopped for a quick coffee. Took the 2 hour train ride where Mat did his spiel since we were not all ( 19 in the group) sitting together he stopped and chatted and informed each group about the destination and gave fun facts. When we arrived at Fussen, took a 10 minute private bus ride then did the hike uphill ( 45 minutes) to the castle where Mat was with us patiently stopped for others to catch up and also have us more information about the site. And also showed us great locations for taking photos of the castle. We had a different tour guide inside the castle which was also a good one. All in all it was a lovely trip, fantastic October weather, sunshine, no rain, awesome guide and money well spent.

Jeff was nice and shared some interesting stories, however, we would not recommend this trip.

We felt it was poor value for money as what you get for your money is a guide directing you to the castle and back, with approximately 15 minutes in total of information.

The trip entails you to use public transport. Because our group consisted of 25 people, we couldn’t all fit on the train, so had a 40 minute wait on the platform for the next one. We had to take 2 trains and a bus to the location. You may as well just plan the journey yourself.

Because we set off late, we also felt rushed. When you get off the second train there is a lovely town that could have been explored and Jeff could have shared the history of the area as we were travelling through it.

The castle itself was well worth the 17euro.

We very much apologize for the situation you encounterd on our tour to Neuschwanstein on Saturday. There had been some bigger issues on the rail tracks which lead to a series of events which then lead up to the unpleasant journey. I am sorry that this was not the experience you had hoped for. Thanks for your understanding.

Just giving my honest opinion!
I booked this tour to the castle. The group met in the morning and the tour guide got us to the attraction by the local train
That took us about 3 hours.
Then we reached our destination and the guide left us in a local restaurant for an hour that was really expensive and not part of the tour.
After that we had to walk for about an hour until we reach the castle. We had frequent stops in which the guide was telling us stories regarding the castle rooms and the king. That was interesting but I am not sure why the stories were not told in the 3 hour train ride or in the 1 hour stop to the restaurant.
We had to do it under the rain.
Then around 1500 we got into the castle and we had to be back by 1600 so we can get our bus to the city.
I stayed in the castle for about 15 minutes and then I rushed down the hill in about 30 minutes while it was raining so I don’t miss the group.
This experience was appalling and I would not recommend to anyone

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear that your Neuschwanstein experience did not live up to your expecations. We hope you will let us explain. The guide will usually not explain too much of the history in the castle, so that guests can just enjoy the scenery. It is still a public train, and we try to respect the other travels/commuters this way. Much of the story and history comes more to life when are there is a visual aspect to the story being told. It sounds like you had poor luck with the weather, which is a real pity... Due to the shortened winter open hours and restricted capacity at the castle due to COVID, we only receive very limited entrance tickets at an entrance time later than normal, so we try to make the best out of these current difficult circumstances to still provide the best experience to our guests possible. We hope that we are provided with another opportunity to change your 2 star to a 5 star review in the future. Wishing you continued safe travels...

We took this tour and it was very disappointing. As another reviewer noted, the tour did not provide enough value for the amount they were charging. They decided to have us take the train and use our own tickets! We were packed on a train with another large group from the tour company and it was every person on their own to find as seat on a very crowded train. Their was no discussion with other tour participants possible. We spent over 5 hours on the train for a 30 minute rushed tour thru the castle the cost of which is not even included in the tour. There was no additional free time inside the castle and very little free time outside the castle. No where does it warn of this on the description of the tour. Very disappointed.

Thank you Tim for your honest comment. We do not make you use your own tickets, just to start the conversation this way. There is the9€ ticket in place in Germany since a few months, which is a great addition to your travels, if you have them. We from the company have tickets ready for each and every guest, but if you already have your monthly pass, we just ask and then use train tickets accordingly for each of the guests. The situation with these great 9€ Tickets does create more usage of the trains, which makes them very packed, especially in July when you joined the tour. I am sorry that this felt like an issue to you, but this sadly is out of our hands, how busy the trains are on the day of travel, as there are no options to reserve any seating. We do arrive at the train early to ensure that each guest has a spot to sit, which all guests did have on this day. The tour inside the castle is a state given tour, as you mentioned, which has a 30 minute duration. This is the only way how to actually enter the castle. I agree, that 30 minutes may appear short, but that is the way the castle handels their customer flow. We as the travel comapny have our guide with you for the whole day, exactly for this reason, to give you so much more information and detail, than just getting you through the castle in those 30 minutes. Sorry if this caused an inconveinience for you. Thanks for your understanding.

Charlie was our tour guide, he was excellent. Originally from the UK, but now living in Munich. He did a great job explaining the history of the castle, and filling in the details. Did a great job herding everyone from the meeting point to the train, and then a short bus ride.

Couple of things to know. The tour guide doesn't actually guide the tour IN the castle., that's handled by the state and state employee. The do a good job. You will need a FP2 mask (N95/K95). If you don't have one you can purchase from the meeting site for 1 Euro.

2nd. The walk up to the castle after the bus ride would best be described as "challenging". If you're healthy, and active I would plan 25-40 minutes to do the walk. If you are not very mobile, or out of shape it will take you significantly longer. There are bus and horse drawn carriage options available, but there is still a small amount of walking after the ride to get to the castle.

Those with significant mobility issues will NOT find the Castle to be accommodating. If you're in a wheel chair or mobility chair I wouldn't bother booking. It is absolutely not accessible.

Our family took the English-guided tour with 8 other international travelers, guided by Paul. We left at 9:15 sharp (arrive few minutes early to make sure you can get properly checked in and not hold up your tour group). Paul was very well organized, conversational and knowledgeable about the Castle history and surrounding areas. We left Munich on the train, switched to a bus in Fuessen, and walked up the mountain from the drop off point. All along the way, Paul gave information about the King and history of the Castle and told many of the folklore stories that are visually represented in the art within the Castle. Paul dropped us at the entrance door with our tickets, reiterated instructions for where our group was to meet after the interior tour (he did not walk the Castle tour itself with us). The castle tour was a little rushed and the interior guide seemed flustered by questions, but the Castle itself was beautiful and well worth the effort to get there. Our tour group met at the designated meeting spot and headed back to Munich on the bus/train, arriving in Munich around 6:15 pm. Wear good shoes for walking, as the walk up from town, through the castle tour and back down the mountain is about 3.7 miles/6k, most of it up hill, down hill, and up and down stairs in the castle.

Wow, thank you for such a wonderful, thorough recap of your day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle with us :) We really appreciate it! And yes, you are very correct, it is very important to come with the correct attire (ie good shoes, and weather appropriate clothing). Hope to have you on our other tours in the future.

We went on the tour with our wonderful guides, Aileen and Anna. At arrival, we were split into two groups and assigned a specific tour guide (we were assigned Anna). Anna is very knowledgeable and personable and we greatly enjoyed having her as our guide. The overall tour was well organized and enjoyable.

Once we got on the bus, our guides gave us some time to get settled and wake up before providing information on Munich, Bavaria, Kind Ludwig, Neuschwanstein, and a variety of other interesting subjects. It was informative and engaging.

Once arriving at the town of Fussen, you have some time for eating, exploring, and other activities. We arrived a little ahead of schedule and had additional time to relax and explore. After this time, you meet again with your guide to go up to the castle. You haver the option of walking, riding a bus, or riding in a horse-drawn carriage (the latter you have to pay for). I highly recommended having good walking shoes for this trip.

Once you arrive at the castle, you again have some time to explore the grounds, take photos, see the Marienbrucke, and more. You are given your ticket for admission at this time and it includes your admission time. Your Radius Tour guide will not accompany you into the castle, as Neuschwanstein provides the guides for the actual castle tour. The tours are separated by language, and so our collective group had multiple castle entry times (2:30 pm, 2:35 pm).

Be advised: the actual tour of the castle is given by a Neuschwanstein Castle guide and is only ~30-35 minutes. You are not permitted to take photos in the castle and you will be called out by castle staff if you try to take photos.

The trip back to Munich is pleasant. Our guides offered a nice mix of engagement and rest, having a small trivia game and then allowing the group to rest.

Overall, my husband and I had a really great experience on this tour and would gladly do another tour with Radius Tours, especially with Anna and Aileen. I also personally appreciated that both our guides repeatedly referenced our bus driver and expressed appreciation for him and his role in our trip. Unfortunately, I do not remember his name, though he was a wonderful driver and we had a safe and uneventful trip to and from Munich.

Definitely bring:

Without the amazing history lesson and story telling from our AMAZING guide Michelle, I am not sure we would have enjoyed as much. It is a VERY long journey for a 30 minute rushed tour of an unfinished castle - albeit beautiful, but unfinished.

It is 2 hours on the train, and then 15 minutes by bus. Then, you have to either hike, bus partially (for an add'l fee) or carriage ride (add'l) fee to the top. Take the carriage ride. It is a VERY steep long climb. The day we went it was cool and rainy. We took the bus, and still had quite a hike the remainder of the way. The stairs in the castle were not easy to navigate.

We left Munich at 8:45 AM. Our "castle tour" was at 2:30 (for 30 minutes) and we arrive back in Munich at 7:30 PM. It was a very long day. Nevertheless, Michelle kept us entertained the entire day telling us the history and narrative of King Ludwig II. It is quite a story!
