Let's start with a disclaimer that as a well-travelled new yorker, I have a very high bar for food. Overall a nice tour that I would recommend to anyone but I keep comparing it to Spanish Devour tours and this one is missing a mark a bit. For once, we only had two sit down places. It would be so nice to have our breakfast as locals (at the table and accompanied by coffee) and not munching croissants on the sidewalk. When you sit down for breakfast you learn something about food and local culture at the same time. I find it hard to believe that Paris has a shortage of places with good food that would allow a group of people to sit or at least stand inside their establishment.

I was a bit surprised that the guide did not know the difference between pierogi and pirozhki. We were told that we are being served doughy pierogies and that is a Parisian take on a classic pierogi recipe. If you enter "pirozhki" into google you learn that "The Russian word pirogi and the Polish word pierogi are homonyms. Despite the phonetic similarity, the words describe different types of cuisine: pirogi can be any type of baked or fried pie, while pierogi are boiled stuffed dumplings."

I really liked the cheese shop, street market Moroccan food, and particularly Jean Paul Hevin chocolate shop. I did go back to the chocolate shop and enjoyed their cakes/pastries in addition to chocolates and macarons. The chocolate shop was definitely a culinary highlight for me and walking the courtyards of St Paul - a cultural/historic highlight.

As always, Devour tours are the highlight of our travels as we've joined them in several countries. We typically use this tour group as an introduction into the cities we are visiting. David, a relatively new guide, was quite knowledgeable about all things culinary as he has worked in Michelin star restaurants. He was able to weave culture, culinary tidbits, and rich history into our morning experience. We had a delightful tour with a small group in the Le Marais area, tasting various foods as we went. I highly recommend Devour Tours wherever you might travel!

We just returned from a week in Paris and definitely would consider the Ultimate Food Tour as one of our vacation highlights. Our tour guide Davide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Les Marais and of the food we were tasting. He was a gastronomy student in Italy and you would be lucky to get on one of his tours, as he has a palpable love of food that he seamlessly incorporates in his four-hour presentation. The Marais is bursting at the seams with restaurants, cafes, etc., so we found it helpful to have this tour as an introduction of what the area offers. We had such a wonderful time sharing stories, learning the history and science of food, and of course tasting so many wonderful bites.

TIPS: The tour is long, with only two opportunities to sit down (once in the middle at the restaurant to eat onion soup, and at the end when we were tasting wine), and it is essential to wear comfortable shoes and bring sufficient water.

Thank you so much Paul E for your review! We agree, Davide's knowledge is totally incredible. It's hard not to be impressed by his CV, too! We're so glad you had a good time on tour, and I hope to see you again next time you're in one of our cities! Best wishes!

To start, our guide was great. I had no issues with her or her knowledge of the area and France in general. In fact conversations with her were the best we had the whole trip!
My issue lies in the fact that for a private tour of 2 people, which cost about 400euro (the equivalent of a 3 course meal each at a fancy caviar restaurant), we were presented with places that were nice, but certainly not great. The small morsels of food were great for tasting, but I think more could have been sampled. Dividing a small 3 inch beef mince pastry 2 ways from a cafe that served beautiful sandwiches seemed a bit silly. And everyone has heard of Poilane bakery, Apollonia is all over Facebook in a multitude of ads in Asia- I imagined a food tour would do better to find a bakery that is not mainstream and known the world over. But at the same time the tour completely walked past the famous falafel place in the Jewish neighbourhood? Why?
One great place was the deli that served cheese and meats- certainly worth a visit.
My review is based on two well travelled people who have sampled foods in many parts of the world, and done a few food tours. So if you're after something out of the ordinary, hidden gems or some unconventional French food, then this isn't for you. This tour is very much about sampling the obvious, and something that can be found from a quick google search and a map on your phone. This tour would best suit travelling newbies, those new to France, or those not too adventurous when it comes to food as everything on this tour is safe, small and boring.

Dear fennelM, Thank you for taking the time to review our Ultimate Paris Food tour. We are very happy you enjoyed spending time with our guide so much, and that conversations with her were the best you had the entire trip! At the same time though, we are also very disappointed you found our service to be boring and not worth the price. While it is true you could have enjoyed a 3 course meal at the same cost, had you chosen that option your tastings would have been limited to 3 instead of 11 and would have not received any historical or culinary background, which we believe to be essential to the experience. As a matter of fact, we pride ourselves in hiring only the best and most engaging guides available, and pay them a fair wage. We also try to include all the best tastings the neighbourhood has to offer, which leads us to visit both historical and family run shops. Although smaller venues might seem more interesting, passing in front of Poilane Bakery without savouring their world famous bread just does not seem fair to us.! Finally, please keep in mind that you booked a private experience, which is always much more expensive than a group service, as it provides a more intimate setting, and can be completely catered to suit the clients’ needs. Again, we are terribly sorry for not meeting your expectations and hope that if you ever find yourself visiting any other location we serve, you will give us another chance. Sincerely,

We have taken many food tours in different cities. We were completing a month tour of France. This was our third food tour. It did not begin to compare with our food tours of Lyon or Nice. The first stop was a smelly old covered market where we we tasted socco. This is a Nice comfort food. Next was a super Chocolate shop. No stop for coffee. The last stop was a wine stop. We were served a wine that the guide claimed was a Southern Rhone. Only problem the wine contained Cabernet Savignon, this is not a grape of the Rhone. The tour was not worth the price, The guide was excellent, but this company needs to improve its choices of stops.

A great food tour in the Les Marais area of Paris (3rd and 4th Arrondisement) guided by the vivacious, passionate Jess - a Liverpudlian who has lived in Paris for the last ten years. 3.5 hours in the morning. She regaled us with several little offbeat stories about the area as we sampled food from 6 separate establishments. A word of warning - please skip breakfast before the tour because you are going to get plenty. Jess is also the perfect host urging you to eat more - “fill your boots” she said with that wonderful north England sense of humour. Highlights for us were the croissants from the phenomenal boulangerie Poilâne, pastry nests from the little Levantine bakery Maison Aleph, falafel in the Jewish area, crepes from a small little hole in the wall (the name escapes me) and fantastic cheese at Laurent Dubois.

We had a hard time finding the meeting location and we were about 5 minutes late. So glad Julia and the group waited and we were able to participate in this tour as it was a highlight of our Paris trip. This tour was to explore the Marais area of Paris. Although the tour had to be altered due to closures in the month of August (many Parisians close up for vacation this time of year) we had a wide selection of stops. We stopped and had croissants, crepes and quiche to name a few. We had a stop at a cheese shop who created an amazing sample board but I was so full I wasn’t able to sample all the cheeses! Along the way Julia our guide pointed out important landmarks and provided us with the history of the area. Very pleased with the tour and would highly recommend.

To sum this up - it poured down all morning but we loved this tour anyway. Michelle, the guide, was excellent. She kept everyone feeling happy in spite of the rain and went the extra mile to make sure everyone was catered for. The stops we made were all excellent - we even went back to the chocolate shop to purchase some more macaron's - definitely recommended.
We've been on Devour tours before (in Madrid) and both times found the entire experience to be hugely enjoyable.

This truly is the ultimate food tour! Every stop was more delicious than the last. Davide provided an extensive history of the area as well as background on the foods we were tasting and what made each unique. He engaged us with questions testing our knowledge with humor and interest. The kids got most of the answers right!
The French Onion Soup alone was worth price of the tour.
Don't miss this food tour. Your taste buds will thank you!
