About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Janet T0 contributionsWonderful day exploring Alsace winePeter picked us up on time in front of our hotel and drove through the beautiful countryside to take our small group to 4 wineries. Each wineries was unique and told a different tale about Alsatian wine. At each location, the winery staff would explain the wines and pour samples. Peter guided what was poured to allow us to experience the variety of alsacian sparkling (cremant), whites (Pinot gris, riesling, gewurztraminer), and reds (Pinot noir) in both sweet and dry. We stopped for lunch and walked a little in the beautiful historic town of Riquewihr (a nice break from all the wine). Peter shared his knowledge of the local wine making process and answered any questions we had. Our tour was in English which is only one language he speaks very well. We had a wonderful day and very much enjoyed our guide’s company. The private tour and driver were well worth the price.Written November 12, 2023
- fozwanderer0 contributionsDay trip from Colmar to Eguisheim, Riquewihr and Haut Koenigsbourg CastleColmar is an enchanting town but it's great to get out into the nearby towns, villages and countryside covered in vineyards. This day trip organised by Ophorus Tours was the perfect opportunity. Our tour guide was Thierry who gave us a wonderful explanation of all things Alsace. He had a lovely sense of humour and a wide knowledge of the region which he imparted in an informative and entertaining way. The nine seater van we travelled in was comfortable and stops frequent and well-timed. We started with an enjoyable wine tasting in Eguisheim followed by a stroll around its quaint circular streets within ancient walls. We had the chance to look at other towns such as Turckheim before having free time including lunch at Riquewihr. Thierry pointed out suitable restaurants to choose from. In the afternoon the highlight was a visit to Haut Koenigsbourg Castle. Thierry had spent time there previously as a guide so was able to expertly bring its history alive for us. It was a delightful tour which we can highly recommend.Written May 15, 2023
- kellymF8396RC0 contributionsPerfect Day in BurgundyOur tour with Pieter was one of the most special days we had in France! The experience was worth every penny. He was very knowledgeable and his guidance gave us the opportunity to get a "taste" of Burgundy stress-free. We had one of our favorite meals in France at the restaurant we stopped at for lunch. We sampled so many wines from a variety of wineries and vineyards. He was helpful even after we returned to the states, through the ordering/shipping process of our wine. Book this tour if you can! You won't regret it.Written January 29, 2023
- Michelle M0 contributionsBest day of the trip!We had a group of 5 people including 3 teenagers. Pieter was absolutely fantastic! He was informative and kept us all engaged. He helped us cater the trip a bit to our liking and offered amazing wine tasting knowledge. We felt comfortable with him and look forward to another excursion with PieterWritten June 1, 2022
- CPaM680 contributionsWines of Burgundy Day Tour with Pieter SmitsWe were staying in a vacation rental north of Lyon while attending the Women’s World Cup and had initially wanted to take a Beaujolais Wine Tour on one of the off-days. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a tour or private tour guide that wasn’t already booked. As a result, we moved further North and started looking at Burgundy wine tours. Luckily by-chance, we booked The Wines of Burgundy Day Tour with Pieter Smits. We had a wonderful tour with Pieter as we visited several villages, chateaus, and wineries. Not only were we able to sample some fine wines but Pieter also selected a restaurant where we had a great lunch. Pieter is very engaging and knowledgeable which helped make the tour very enjoyable. It's an experience I will always remember.Written July 9, 2020
- ovelezperez0 contributionsBurgundy during holidaysExcellent tour, top wineries, very knowledgeable, good company, and delicious choice for lunch. I would repeat a tour if in the area. Strongly recommendedWritten January 9, 2020
- Nancy Beth M0 contributionsVery GoodWe were on a riverboat excursion and were taken to Strassbourg, so this canal ride was included. We enjoyed going around this absolutely lovely little town. It is so charming! You can see really well as the boat has glass roof. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day so you could see all the darling hpuses with their flowerboxes under all the windows..so pretty. I highly recommend not only the boat tour but coming to this town. It was one of my favorites on the whole trip.Written December 8, 2019
- KatieCT0450 contributionsBest Day of our TripWe had the pleasure of traveling in December to Geneva, Strasbourg and Zurich. Hoping to see some of the countryside, we booked a day-tour with Pieter to travel along the northern part of the Alsace Wine Route. Based on email correspondences and discussions as we started our tour, Pieter put the perfect itinerary together which matched our interests. We spent time in Rinquewihr and Colmar, taking in the village sites and their Christmas markets. We also visited two wineries in the region and could not have been more pleased with his selections. In addition to their superb wines we enjoyed at the tastings, the winery staff carefully packaged our purchases to ensure safe passage in our checked luggage for the return home. Pieter is clearly knowledgeable about the region and the wines produced in its vineyards. We were particularly impressed in the manner which he made mental notes as to our wine preferences at the first winery, and then made the suggestions at the secondary winery based on that information. This attention really allowed us to fully experience and appreciate the offerings at the wineries with the limited time that we had. Regarding practical matters, Pieter was very responsive to email communications before the trip and payment was very easy via PayPal. He met us at our hotel precisely at the agreed meeting time. He automobile was clean and comfortable for travel. And I felt he was a safe and responsible driver. Above all, he is very personable, and we enjoyed the day that we spent with him. We have to say that his day tour was the highlight of our trip. If we ever turn to the region, a second tour with Pieter without a doubt will be on our agenda.Written January 14, 2019
- Elle F0 contributionsFull Day wine tour of BurgundyWe’ve toured with Pieter before in Alsace & we were thriled to find out he does wine tours in Burgundy. Pieter speaks English & French and has wonderful relationships with exquisite, special & boutique wineries in the famous Burgundy region. He’s very knowledgeable about the region, the wine making process & takes you to view the most famous Pinot Noir vineyards & sights. Our full day tour included 2 visits & tastings in the morning & 2 after lunch. You pay for your lunch & Pieter will select a place for lunch based on your culinary preferences & desired price range. He will even make excellent suggestions for dinner if you ask. He made dinner reservations for us at a Three Star Michelin restaurant, which was on our bucket list! He picks you up and drops you off at your hotel & shows you famous Chateaus & museums of the region if you would like & have time. Our group included my husband, our 11 year old son & my mother in law. He’s understanding & accomodating to our well behaved son & my mother in law who needs help with waking, steps & such. I’m always impressed with Pieter’s vast wine knowledge & was delighted once again by his special relationships with the people at the places we toured & tasted. I’ve taken many guided wine tours & I feel like we get extra special treatment when we are with Pieter. The best part is, Pieter coordinates affordable wine shipping so you can purchase & ship the amazing Burgundy wine home to the USA! We look forward to touring another wine region with him in the future!Written August 19, 2018
- BusyTe0 contributionsAmazing Day of Wine TastingPieter was absolutely fantastic! We had such a special day touring the vineyards in Alsace and trying the various different types of wine in the region. Pieter was so knowledgable and helpful. Can’t wait to organise another tour with PieterWritten August 18, 2018
- Jordan D0 contributionsThe tour and Pieter were PERFECTWe were fortunate to have a personal tour from Pieter. His knowledge of the region and wines were insightful and helpful to both of us. There are hundreds of producers in the region and his selections gave us a great view from small to large producers. He read each us perfectly in a short time and could easily pick our favorites before we did by mid day. He was personable and knowledge talking about wine or casual lunch conversation. We were not easy customers. My wife is a very serious and knowledgeable on wines from many French regions, though not the Alsace. I am much more the novice. He easily spanned back and forth between us to ensure a great day. When challenged by my wife to estimate the cost for the day. I rated 25% higher than cost. Pieter was worth more than we paid, a rare treat. Thank you for a great dayWritten November 21, 2017
- Joyce R0 contributionsWonderful day in the vines with PieterI'm so glad I found Pieter and Jolie Soleil Wine Tours for my recent trip to Alsace. My friend and I knew so little about Alsatian wines and were so looking forward to this day. Pieter offered us a fabulous day. Maybe one of the best days of our two-week trip to France. We decided to book our day with Pieter on our first day in Alsace so we could order wine with confidence throughout our stay in the region. I must say, that by the end our our day with Pieter, I felt excited and confident about exploring the wines of the region. We visited 4 different tasting rooms and small vintner. Our tasting experience was extensive and informative and Pieter was so knowledgeable and helpful in showing us the range of wines in the regions. In addition to tasting great wines, we had beautiful drives through the vineyards, a tasty lunch at a small restaurant, and a stop at a famous confiture store and a chocolate shop! And, if all of that was not enough to earn Pieter a 5-star rating, he is also coordinating the pickup and shipping of our favorite wines back to the US. This is such a special service and not frequently available to wine tourists. Thank you Pieter!Written November 6, 2017
- epipk0 contributionsWhatever you want from Alsace -- Pieter can do it!From tasting the best of Alsace to lovely villages and chateaux and castles to some really great lunches to Colmar's Statue of Liberty (just like ours but not as tall), our three days with Pieter went by far too quickly. We had a very general idea of what we wanted, Pieter filled it in with energy, experise, and enthusiasm. Beginning with the 7 main grapes of Alsace and vineyards in the hills, we visited small boutique wineries to large super-colossal establishments and all were pertinent, tasty, and, well, fun! Most importantly, wines presented & tasted were well planned, chosen with purpose, their place explained thoroughly: compare and contrast. We visited a friend of Pieter's who is building an earth-friendly modern winery -- we interrupted their construction to say hello. We went to a winery guarded by a blind dog, he never moved. We went to the greatest Christmas store in the world. Castles, chateaux, quaint towns -- I don't know how we packed so much into 3 days. And, of course, the wine. Red, white, and rosé, still, bubbly, and sparkling, sweet, dry or in-between -- truly we had it all. Pieter's English is perfect, his French must be good because he fits in like a Frenchman, and he seems to know everybody and everything pertinent in the region. We had such a great time, we're trying to get him over to Bordeaux next September for another visit to other vineyards.Written October 29, 2017
- cadudio0 contributionsAmazing day in Alsace! My wife & I took a day tour in Alsace, starting with a visit of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. Just for that it was worth it considering we did not have to do with driving and mostly, with parking. We then spent the day exploring one wonderfully scenic town after another, and a very fun wine-tasting pit stop which gave is the opportunity of sampling some wonderful local wines. Pieter, our guide, gave us the time to do what we wanted to here and there, allowing some scheduling flexibility, and it was one of the best days of our vacation. I highly recommend touring with these guys. And if wine is what you're into, you're guaranteed a very knowledgeable guide to show you around and tell you all about it.Written February 5, 2017

Hi. We are planning to stay in Dijon; will you be able to collect us from there? I would really want to visit Bouchard Pere & Fils; can this be guaranteed? If both are possible, we would like to book. Thanks. Meg
