Itinerary
- 28 The Mall, Waterford, Ireland
- 1At the House of Waterford Crystal, there is a manufacturing plant, and brand experience in Waterford, where we produce crystal and give visitors an opportunity to visit the factory and see how we make our beautiful products. On the tour, guests visit the mould room where they witness mould making – a technique that has remained unchanged throughout the centuries, as the Master Blowers shape the molten crystal flawlessly with the use of wooden moulds and hand tools. The next part of the tour is truly magical, as visitors enter the blowing department where they see glowing balls of crystal transformed into majestic shapes as they are put through the 1300-degree furnace. The Waterford Crystal pieces are then hand marked for precision and accuracy, and they are then cut, sculpted and engraved. While getting this behind the scenes sneak peak of this highly skilled method of crystal manufacturing, visitors also see the high standards that the House of Waterford Crystal has for each and every piece that leaves the factory. The crystal is inspected at each stage of production, so each piece no matter how small goes through six inspections, and if it fails to reach the Waterford Crystal standards at any stage it is smashed and returned to the furnace to be re-melted so that the piece can be started again. The tour is fully guided and takes approx 50 minutes to complete. On completion of the tour, visitors can experience over 12,000 sq ft of crystal heaven in the largest retail and showcase of Waterford Crystal in the world. The retail store represents everything that is made in crystal, including a showcase on golf and sport, which is a major part of the international business at the House of Waterford Crystal. The main feature in the retail store is a centre dining table, with twelve Waterford Crystal Chandeliers on display. The lifestyle displays communicate the various brand stories including the Jo Sampson Collection, John Rocha, Jeff Letham and the core Waterford Crystal patterns. The product range includes Waterford Crystal, House of Waterford Crystal, John Rocha, Jasper Conran, Jo Sampson, Archive Stemware, Marquis, Lighting, Holiday Heirlooms and the new Waterford Crystal Jewellery Collection. Waterford Crystal continues to provide some of the most prestigious trophies to the world’s great sporting events made at the facility, and some of these trophies are on display in the retail store. The Crystal café is open seven days a week, a daytime cafe, the Crystal Café is all about great food using nothing but the best locally sourced seasonal produce supporting as many Irish suppliers as possible along the way. The menu offers café-style dining, incorporating scrumptious salads, soups, wraps, ciabatta’s and other healthy options, with fresh baking daily.

- PAdixie0 contributionsOutstanding craftsmanshipA very interesting and informative tour. It's amazing to watch the craftspeople at work and when you saw the time and detail that went into each piece you could better understand the price. Absolutely beautiful work. I would recommend the tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, able to answer any questions, and allowed adequate time to stop and observe at every station.Written June 7, 2024
- Rhodymom20120 contributionsWhy not? Beautiful CrystalThis was something we felt we had to do, while in Waterford go to the House of Waterford and purchase something special to bring home from our trip to Ireland. Why not? The easiest item to bring home was an ornament and the most symbolic of our trip was a crystal shamrock. They come in nice boxes that can easily be packed in luggage. Not terribly expensive but you pay for what you get.Written June 1, 2024
- RHtravels0 contributionsThe best of the bestWe wanted to visit the showroom since we were nearby, but didn't have time for a tour. We have several pieces at home already and were looking to add to our collection. My son always makes fun of me because I guess I say "It's a Waterford" whenever someone asks me about my treasures in the china cabinet. The showroom was amazing and we fell in love with a gorgeous Starry Night vase. The manager was kind enough to give us a glimpse of the artisan cutters in the production area and some of their recent works. We ultimately decided on getting something for everyone and purchased whiskey glasses, a bowl, and a tray and we shipped everything home. Everyone we spoke with in the showroom was friendly and helpful and they treat you like this is their family business. If you have never seen the skill and artistry that goes into creating such beautiful crystal, then make time for the tour, but definitely make a stop and get a real souvenir of Ireland that you will treasure forever.Written April 30, 2024
- timmK5646XC0 contributionsWaterford CrystalI was staying in Waterford for a couple of days with family and we decided we’d pay a visit to Waterford Crystal and we really enjoyed it. The place was clean. The staff were lovely and very friendly because we wanted Christmas decorations and utensils and we were unsure which one’s to buy. All the prices were displayed clearly. It’s easy to find. The only thing we didn’t do was the factory tour which we would’ve loved to have done if we had the time. Hope to be back soon.Written February 29, 2024

Some of the displays are simply stunning and we found ourselves walking around a few times to view everything on display. There is seating available and plenty of room to move around. We also used the café which was very good and well priced. Worth a visit.Written July 18, 2023

- Lawonridge0 contributionsFacinating Up-Close Factory TourWe have been on many factory tours, and the one at the Waterford crystal factory was by far the best experience. Throughout the tour we were literally 1-3 feet from the workmen. The guide provides explanation of each of the steps of the process, starting with pouring the molten glass into molds, cleaning and marking the glass and etching the design. You leave with a full appreciation of the art. The tour ends of course in the beautiful gift shop, however, there was never any pressure to buy.Written June 8, 2022
- RBoyleJr0 contributionsHighly RecommendWe arrived at Waterford Crystal and the wait for the next available tour was about 2 hours. We didn't make the tour and that's one of my biggest regrets from our 2 week Ireland Vacation. I recommend you book your tour time in advance. We did walk through the showroom and it alone was amazing. The beautiful pieces they had on display and for sale. We bought several pieces and they offered us $30 flat rate shipping to the US with a breakage replacement guarantee, so we didn't have to worry about carrying it with us. Along with the beautiful countryside and amazing rich culture and history, this was one of my favorite stops.Written May 12, 2022

I don't love waterford crystal all that much, but this was an incredible factory experience. Tickets were a little pricey, we should have booked ahead online to save a little. The workers and our tour guide were very welcoming and we saw everything from glassblowing to sculpting and polishing, it was very interesting. Not the best for children, but we made it work on a rainy day, and once we were into the factory(and not listening to tour guide or video), the kids were more interested.

Hi Camper662498,
We are delighted that you and your family took the time to visit us and take a tour through our factory. As you discovered yourself you don’t need to be a crystal fan to appreciate the ancient crafts of blowing, cutting, sculpting and engraving. Watching the craftsmen work at such close proximity is a great experience. We hope that you will return to visit us again in the future.
Many thanks,
The House of Waterford Crystal Team

My boyfriend and I took a visit to the Waterford Crystal store and factory while we were down in Waterford. It was absolutely sensational to see all of the work that goes on behind the scenes of Waterford Crystal and to see how much thought, preparation, work and design goes into all of the glass making! We were walked through the factory by a lovely gentleman named Sean who had so much knowledge and insight on the factory and the history of Waterford Crystal. Definitely a must see if you take a trip down to Waterford!

Hi orniamh,
Our team were delighted that you labelled your visit with us as an "Incredible Guided tour". Sean is a great guide very kind and full of knowledge about Waterford Crystal. It is a lovely experience getting so close to the craftsmen as they work, watching them create pieces using crafts that have taken them many years to master. Thank you for the lovely review and we hope you will visit again in the future.
Kind Regards

Okay, the craftsmen were incredibly talented, the craftsmanship excellent and the tour guiding staff were knowledgeable, approachable and accessible (especially Sean). There is something amazing about watching someone at the top of their game in a speciality you wish you had. Our only rub with this experience is that it’s a tour about mass produced and large items. The showroom has items that are simply out of an average joe’s price range which is an awful feeling (prices start at €40-60 and climb to €20k). Also, having grown up around the Corning Glass Works Museum (and half my family working in it), I had expected a “seconds” area. While I understand that all the crystal is reused, it’s the imperfect items a lot of people I overhead (myself included!) were looking for. Overall, this is a tour that showcases the craftsmanship and talent, not a realistic place to purchase anything though.

Hi Bethany M,
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit with us here at the house of Waterford crystal. Our team were delighted to hear that you found the craftsmanship to be "excellent, and the tour guides knowledgeable, approachable and accessible" great praise indeed. Here at Waterford crystal we don't sell seconds, any piece that is found to be flawed is smashed up and added back into the batch as cullet. Every piece goes through six stages of stringent quality inspection before it receives our mark of excellence the word, "Waterford" on the piece. We hope you enjoyed your time in Ireland, we would be delighted to welcome you back to visit us here at the House of Waterford Crystal, should you return to visit again in the future.
Many thanks,

The factory visit is a short tour but very extensive with respect to the level of details you receive from the guides. You see the craftsmen at work and witness the skills needed and employed to blow and carve crystal. The danger zone is the shop!

Hi louisev88,
We are delighted that you labelled your review as a "Fascinating tour". It is amazing to watch our craftsmen as they blow, cut, sculpt and engrave our crystal, at such close proximity. When planning the tour we found 50-60 minutes was a good time frame so it is a pity you thought it was short. Our showroom and retail area is spectacular with lots of beautiful pieces to tempt you with!! We do hope you will visit us again in the future.
Many Thanks,

We arrived just before the last factory tour of the day. We were lucky to have the wonderful Sean take us on our tour. Sean was incredibly knowledgeable. It was lovely to see the gentleman blow the glass, line the glass then engrave & polish it.
Everyone was so kind especially the ladies on the reception desk. It was an amazing tour! Also looking around the fabulous shop.

Our craftsmen love to chat with visitors about the pieces they are working on and the skills involved in the creation of each piece. We hope if you are returning to Waterford in the future that you will drop in to visit us again.

What an amazing and informative tour our group with Gate 1 Travel had at the Waterford Crystal Factory!
We saw how Waterford Crystal is made from the glowing hot balls being blown by one of the craftsmen until they put it in a hot furnace.
We saw various stages of the makings in the mold room, then on to the marking dept. where craftsmen marked the samples before sending them to the sculpting dept.
We got to see craftsmen actually working on various pieces of crystal, before seeing a large finished display at the end....OMG!!
Finally, we went to the Showroom for some shopping.....again, OMG!!
Throughout my travelling around Ireland with this tour group, I have mainly saved my purchases for this place....what deals and gifts I brought home with me!!

Great tour of the factory taking you through the history of Waterford Crystal and the making of it. Orla showed us around and we were invited to take photos and ask questions. It was great to see the craftsmen at work (I’m sure they must get fed up of tourists ogling them 😂) Be brave and hold the American football for a photo when asked 😉. You will appreciate more why Waterford Crystal is so expensive after this tour - all hand blown, hand designed and carved. Simply beautiful 🤩

We had no idea how Waterford crystal was made, but after an amazing tour with Mary we became true believers in the craft and skill that goes into creating such beauty. I would highly recommend taking the tour to gain a better appreciation of the workmanship and pride that goes into making each piece. The other thing that struck us was how relaxed and friendly everyone was... from the receptionist, to our tour guide, to the craftsman and sales people.

What's the time duration of the VIP tour?

Very unhappy with this tour. Made reservations. $30. Never got back to me with a time/date. No one to answer telephone calls. No response via email. Kept my money and I had no options to get it back. Tacky. Plus, the town of Waterford is just an urban city and hasn't any "Irish" feel to it. Stayed in Waterford specifically to take the tour. Never got a chance to see it. Very disappointed.

Once tickets are purchased, how do we know when to arrive and when the next tour will start? We will be there on a Thursday in November.
Written October 14, 2019
Just turn up at a time that suits you. I think tours run every 30 minutes. They have a nice cafeteria that you can wait in prior to your tour starting. You just see the ladies at reception when you arrive to get your name on the list for the next tour. Its very well organised and you shouldn't have to wait long.

Hi, planning a visit on 12 Aug however can't see schedule of tours, times? Also we're seniors over 65 but ticket purchase won't allow. So, do we purchase for under 65? Frank
Written May 24, 2019
We purchased our tickets on Viator's web site and seniors, as I recall, are called pensioners. Saves you a couple of bucks. You get a voucher that you trade in at the reception counter for tickets. A tour leaves every 30 minutes so you schedule your time when you hand in the voucher. Five minutes before the tour starts they announce it over the PA and you line up in a designated area in front of reception. At the end of the tour it empties you out into the company store.

We would like a tour on Sunday afternoon. Will the craftsmen be working? It shows the tour is open. Is this correct?
Written April 23, 2019
Can't guarantee it but in all probability yes the craftsmen will be working, because without them there is very little to see and understand. Check on their website however that they are really open on the sunday you want to go.....
