Stop At: Strokestown Park & National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park Bawn Street Vesnoy, Strokestown F42 H282 Ireland

Strokestown Park House is an 18th century mansion in Co. Roscommon that retains its original furnishings and documents. This evocative estate is a capsule in time and Georgian Ireland in its purist form. A tour of the house gives an intimate insight into life in The Big House, upstairs and downstairs. The walled garden takes you back to the glorious surroundings of a planned Georgian estate and gives a unique insight into horticultural practices and garden architecture from the 1740s to the present day. The Irish National Famine Museum tells a different story and highlights the parallels between a tragic chapter of Irish History and contemporary global hunger.

This small museum does an exemplary job of combining artifacts and documents with multimedia to create a compelling experience. It is a tragic part of Ireland's history, and truly of the history of so many people around the globe, those who descended from the starving...More

The Famine Museum is well worth a visit. The heart breaking story of Roscommon people in that era is a grim reminder to all of us of those times. The house is also very interesting and the kitchen is amazing. Gardens nice for a walk....More

Great museum and gardens with lots of information on the famine. The house gives a very personal and social history of the time and the different affects on tenants, workers and landlords. It would be great if the tour could include visits to other parts...More

I've been carrying out a lot of research on the famine in recent times and this museum and location was a perfect complement to this work. Note the strokestown tour is of the house (and doesn't really mention the famine) for those simply looking to...More
