We're reviewing the actual rail your company, not the trains or other companies used. As for Rail Tours and Brian/Norman, I found the actual company to be doing the absolute best they could under challenging employment shortages.
When you're far from home and you book a tour like this, you want knowledgeable people to be in control and the Rail Tours guys are good at keeping things orderly and together.
I can imagine your guides finding it tough to connect with a new batch of people constantly, but both Brian and Norman were affable and clearly cared about making sure our time in Ireland was fun.
As for the buses and their use of other companies, you cannot expect them to have large enough groups at all times. Ireland has tiny, windy, bumpy side roads that will challenge any bus driver.
The structured nature of times attractions certainly helps you see many things in Ireland, but I'd probably strike out on my own if I visited again to really get into the back country for hiking.

My experience with Rail Tours was absolutely amazing. I was so impressed with the amount of care and knowledge each tour guide had. As a first time solo traveler this experience was perfect for me and I felt so well taken care of each step of the way. All of the tour guides were so kind! John Todd really helped me out by taking pictures for me at the Cliffs of Moher so now I have great photos that captured the experience. I would highly recommend Rail Tours for people who want to experience as much of Ireland in a short time as they possibly can!

This tour was so well organized and the tour guides were knowledgeable. This was my first tour and I enjoyed every minute. The sights were beautiful and we had lots of opportunities for pictures. Everyone was so helpful. I left my phone on the last tour bus in Galway and had to return to Dublin without it. John Todd and Tony were great and calmed me down, assured me they would find it which they did and it was returned to me the next day. I hope to return to Ireland in the future and would definitely book with Railtours Ireland again.

We had a fantastic time on our four day tour. Brian was informative, interesting and funny. He shared great tips and recommendations each day. It's a busy few days but we appreciated the organized itinerary. Yes, be prepared to move your luggage each day so pack accordingly. It's obvious. Chosen hotels and lunch stops were great. No complaints at all. We love Ireland and its people. Five star all the way.

We took the 6-day "All Ireland" tour, which is similar to the 4-day tour but with the Aran Islands and Northern Ireland added. The transportation was a combination of reserved car sections of standard trains and large and small coaches. We never knew, nor were we ever told, what kind or livery of bus would pick us up each morning. They kept changing buses and most often they were unmarked with no indication it was our tour bus. Also, they should provide bottles of drinking water on the bus. Our first hotel had no air conditioning so we had to keep the window open all night even though the hotel was hosting a very loud wedding party in the courtyard below until 2 am. The second hotel gave us a handicapped room with a king bed even though we requested a standard room with twin beds. They told us that was all that was available even though we signed up for the tour a month in advance. Our tour guide for the first three days was dismissive with one-on-one questions and comments, seemingly preferring only to speak to the group so as not to have to repeat himself (?). One coach had distorted audio so about a quarter of the descriptions were unintelligible. That was fun for two hours! This guide also seemed to be in need of a shower for all of the three days; it was unpleasant to be near him. Days 4 and 5 had extremely bumpy roads that lasted for about 1-1/2 hours, amplified by the short wheel bases of the small buses. The local bus on the Aran Island part of the tour had us waiting at the pick-up point (after the self-guided fort tour) for at least 45 minutes after everyone was ready to go, making it necessary to drive directly to the ferry even though some were assuming we would have time to shop in the town’s famous wool products stores. It was a total screw up on the train trip from Galway to Dublin. We were told in the written instructions for that day that there were no reserved seats on Sunday trains but that was wrong and so we were told by arriving passengers mid-trip that we were in reserved seats and had to relocate. We were NOT told that there would be a tour rep on the train with us so we assumed we had to make our own way to the hotel when we got off the train in Dublin. We almost got into our own taxi except that another traveler from our tour sprinted across the train station to stop us. Oh, and they made no time allowance for dinner on the last day (the day trip to Northern Ireland) so we ended up eating take-out noodles from a Chinese hole-in-the-wall across the street from the train station at 10:30pm. This six day tour, I understand now, is a composite of several short tours and so the composition of our "group" was a constant merging of new people, and so we felt isolated and unable to make acquaintances. All in all, you would be well advised to take a quality coach tour from a reputable company such as Trafalgar (which we have used in continental Europe with great satisfaction).

This tour was a great way to see some of Ireland’s highlights. Our guide, Jonathan B., was friendly, helpful, and informative. We did everything in the tour description and more. For example, we saw a demonstration of how trained dogs heard sheep. It was amazing.
An important note is that we never felt rushed. In fact, because our tour-mates were all courteous and returned to the coach on time, we often made brief unscheduled stops for photos, etc.

Words cannot describe the beauty of Ireland that we experienced first hand on this 4 day rail tour. Our guides were awesome - for three days we enjoyed big Brian D who was incredible and the last day we loved Jonathan. There were 6 in our group including two kids, who learned so much. We appreciated the organization and professionalism during every sec of the tour. Jonathan used poetry and song to help us imagine the tragedy of the famine - his words were so eloquent. On the way back, he had fun w our family on the rail! Two of the members of our group enjoyed a rail tour two years ago and were so happy to see Jonathan again. Brian enjoyed Celtic Steps with us one night, and it was so much fun and an incredible performance! The scenic turnouts we made, special spots we visited, points of interest, scenic vistas could never have been obtained using just a guide book. We would be unable to choose our favorite sight, my grandson is enjoying having us “list” our top three! Thank you for helping to make our Ireland trip so problem free and enjoyable - we’re already planning our return!

Visited Ireland for the first-time and booked a tour for the majority of our stay. I really enjoyed how well-organized the tour was, and how friendly and knowledgeable the team was. Our guide, Andy, was great, couldn't have asked for better. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Ireland. Great combination of visiting historical sites and great places for photos, as well as down-time built into tour to visit restaurants, pubs and explore the city on your own. WiFi on the buses/train was a huge help with staying on top of flights, emails, etc.

Hi Robert,
Many thanks for your wonderful review and recommendation. I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour with Andy recently, I will pass on your kind sentiments to him. Our tours are Hosted Railtours for the Independent traveler so it is good that you enjoyed the combination of the guided tour each day and free time in the evening.
Kind Regards,
