About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- S1559RSleec0 contributionsExceptional. Professional. Knowledgeable.Mike was extremely knowledgable and had a really lovely leadership style. He worked hard to ensure we got the most out of our days and out of ourselves. He was unfailing in his enthusiasm for the natural world. Can’t rate Abacus highly enough for a professionally facilitated experience in a remarkable part of Scotland.Written November 4, 2024
- M1829YFchloec0 contributionsGuided Inn PinWe used Abacus Mountain Guides to book the guided Inn Pin climb on Skye. Our guide Iain was great. Very knowledgeable of the local area and also very patient with 2 very novice Cullin goers! Iain gave very clear instructions and clearly knows his stuff. We had an amazing day and made some awesome memories ☺️ Would definitely recommend Iain as a guide.Written August 17, 2024
- P617QAelizabetha0 contributionsAonach Eagach Ridge - third time lucky! We are four grannies in our seventies, attempting to 'compleat' the Munros. The two peaks on the Aonach Eagach ridge had eluded us twice because of poor weather conditions. But this time, with the help of the splendid Abacus guides Sam and Ally, we succeeded. We had been apprehensive and by the time we reached the pinnacles we were quite wound up! However, our guides were so reassuringly calm and skilful that they gained our complete trust. We relaxed into the experience and even began to enjoy it! We are thrilled to have the Aonach Eagach Munros in the bag. Thank you Sam and Ally!Written July 2, 2024

- DavidDean30 contributionsJust the best. I wouldn't trust any other guide in the same way.Mike Pescod is simply the best guide. Have been with him several times now. Feel totally safe but at the same time I also feel that I am progressively doing more adventurous routes every time I join Abacus. Mike is also open to suggestions on climbs etc.Written June 11, 2024
- 64alistairt0 contributionsFantastic guiding on the Cuillin RidgeCan't recommend Abacus highly enough after a fantastic experience on the Cuillin Ridge. Had the pleasure of guide Mike Pescod over five trips in the Cuillin to complete the ridge. Mike's experience, leadership, knowledge gave me great confidence to step a wee bit outside my comfort zone.Written June 11, 2024
- johnpM4491ZA0 contributionsThe Curved Ridge, Buachaille Etive Mòr - A Cracking Day outOn the 16th May, I returned to Buachaille Etive Mòr, but rather than the traditional tourist route up Coire Na Tulaich as I had done back in May 2014 & 2015, I'd taken to the idea of climbing up via the Curved Ridge. While comfortable with scrambling and solo treks, I hummed and hawed about taking on the challenge completely solo but after a reading a few reports on Walkhighlands and studied videos on YouTube I decided to book a guide to remove any concerns. I previously booked with Abacus Mountain Guides back in 2015 for the Aonach Eagach and the Cuillin munros in 2021 so there was no doubt who I would be booking again! For this trip I teamed up with Cal. We met at Altnafeadh for a 09:00 start under a somewhat grey and overcast start to the day - this would soon change. We made our way along the path towards the Water Stone and then up towards the start of the ridge where we roped up. Cal was on point and guided me up the climb and at no point I had any worries or hesitation about it, but rather just lapped up the views and the scramble. Having Cal to guide me up on this first attempt was worth his weight in gold and reaffirmed my decision not to go solo. With all the guides that I've been paired with Abacus over the years, Andy, Casper and Cal, they have all been excellent, knowledgeable and just down to earth guys who show their love of the outdoors by what they do. As we had our lunch around 12 atop of the Curved Ridge the cloud burned off and treated us to picturesque blue skies across Rannoch Moor and down to the Kingshouse Hotel - lucky considering I booked the trip 7 weeks earlier! The climb itself felt exclusive to us as we only saw two other climbers who quickly scurried up ahead. Once lunch was finished, and a bit of drone footage captured, it was up to Crowberry Tower and then onto the summit of Stob Dearg for 13:00. Cal offered the opportunity to scale down the Great Gully but by this point I was content with today's achievement and happy to return to the cars via the traditional route of Coire Na Tulaich. Next time Cal, next time. Thanks again to Abacus Mountain Guides and no doubt I'll be in touch again for another challenge.Written June 9, 2024
- happytraveller1864090 contributionsSkye and The In PinnA truly memorable time on the Isle of Skye, Abacus Mountain Guides communication right from my first enquiry was superb Our Guide Cal was brilliant and got both myself and my son safely up and down the In-Pinn. - O7000KCrobertm0 contributionsWas a fantastic experience, definitely be doing it againHad a amazing time. My guide Sally was awesome, lovely to chat to and knowledgeable, hope to use again in the future. Although most hikes are manageable on your own. There’s a lot where a experienced guide is a good decision. Someone who has hiked it many times and knows the areas well. When in need of a guide use Abacus Mountain Guides. 👍👍👌👌Written June 9, 2024
- Dream376659303170 contributionsThe Cuillins - SkyeFantastic couple of days, really enjoyable. Mike was a fantastic guide and very professional and very knowledgeable. Mike’s advice was excellent on both days and advised us on our other days we had left as well. Mike’s love for the outdoors was infectious and as soon as we were finished we were already thinking of booking with him again for other climbs and even thinking of booking some winter climbing with him, something we thought we would never do. Can’t thanks Mike enough he made it all look so easy and made us feel very safe at all times…..I wish there was more than 5 stars on here, it’s well deserved. ThanksWritten May 16, 2024
- Exploration2555030 contributionsWinter ClimbingThis is the third year that I have been winter climbing with Abacus Mountain Guides. It has all been fantastic. Despite weather conditions they have always gone the extra mile to ensure that we have got the best out of the day. All the guides have been a joy to be with on the hill. Neil this year made it another enjoyable and great learning experience. I am already looking forward to next winter and hopefully a fourth time with Abacus Mountain Guides.Written April 3, 2024

This was the second time we travelled up to Scotland and employed Abacus to take us climbing in the mountains. And for good reason. Mike is the type of person who instils confidence, educates and is just an all-round great guy.
We climbed Ben Nevis via Tower Ridge and it is something I will always remember. The highlights were the Eastern Traverse and the sheer drop down one side, Tower Ridge with a sheer drop down both sides and Tower Gap, where Mike calmly showed us how to lean across from one rock to another with nothing below. Oh, and the most hugged rock, which leads to the Tower Gap.
Mike was great, and so was Sally who communicated all the details clearly via email and I absolutely recommend for anyone who wants to climb near Fort William to book Abacus.

This was my first ascent of Snowdon and my first climb of my solo three peaks challenge, 1 Bob, 2 Wheels, 3 Peaks, travelling between peaks by cycle.
I booked a guide in advance as I wanted to get the most out of the experience and of course safety was another important factor.
I was not disappointed.
Booked on a group session, in the event I was the only customer booked that turned up. The ascent however still went ahead.
It was a fantastic experience, my guide, Sally, was excellent and very knowledgeable.
It was, as is apparently quite normal, very wet and cloudy at the top, another good reason to have an experienced guide, the cairns can be tricky to spot. Snow at the top too, nice to see the snow buntings.
The information and checklists provided was very useful.
Would definitely recommend.
A bit late in posted my review. Just got a certificate through from TCT to tell me that my event raised £2,227.79, including gift aid.
Glad it started well, having a good guide does make a difference!

I was travelling alone, and was delighted to find that there was an option to join a group walk which was not a weekend.
Mike very kindly collected me from the train station as I had travelled by public transport, and checked that we all had sufficient layers/gloves etc before starting.
The walk was a little tough battling against 50mph, but Mike was very good at keeping us motivated and safe.
The walk down was much better weather, where we had lessons on the different plants too.
I would definitely recommend Abacus, and hope to revisit and join another walk some day.

Kind and knowledgeable tour guide. The other people in the group were also friendly. Felt a bit expensive considering all the other people I saw hiking that day without a guide. It was a clear, warm day though and imagine in bad weather having a guide would be more important, especially if you are not an experienced hiker.

James was our guide and he was absolutely fantastic! Not only did he expertly guide our group and provide lots of information about Ben Nevis and the surrounding area, he also helped a number of people in difficulty along the way that were not part of our group. As a solo traveller I was a bit nervous taking on such a hike but I immediately felt at ease when we had our briefing before heading up the mountain. 100% recommend!

Reaching the summit was a massive achievement for us we were very lucky to have Alison Thacker as our guide who made it a very stress free day. Wonderful clear views at the top and a good covering of snow with just a little sprinkle as we reached the top. Lovely weather up and back down but make sure you have extra layers etc for the summit as very cold. We also had crampons with us which was a big help on the snow on the final climb to the top.

A great experience and would highly recommend this to anyone interested in traversing to the summit of Ben Nevis. Sally the guide was extremely knowledgeable about the geology, fauna and history of the area. It's a relaxed pace and you can stop for water, snacks and photos when you like.

At the start of the New Year, I ascended Ben Nevis in winter conditions with Abacus Mountain Guides. This was the first guided hike that I have ever booked and Sally has set a high bar for those that follow. Thanks, myself and my two friends really enjoyed our day out!

Sally led a small group of five of us; myself and my daughter, a couple and a single walker on our walk up Ben Nevis. She did a great job as there was quite a range of fitness levels in the group and the weather at the top wasn't great. We reached the summit and got back down safely. Would definitely recommend Abacus based on this trip. Sensible advice, good communication and a positive attitude. Thanks very much!

Ewan was an extremely helpful and knowledgable guide providing constant encouragement to all members of the party according to their needs. Not an easy skill! He inspired trust and obviously knew the mountains well. His patience and ability to chat with all group members was so much appreciated as was his knowledge of the wildlife and flora and fauna.
The advice given on the run up,to the ascent day itself was helpful and safety seems always a paramount concern.
I had a fabulous experience climbing Ben Nevis - a personal challenge made into an enjoyable experience. Thank you Ewan and Abacus!

Hi. I'll be in Fort William in September, 18th. I'd like to know if it's easy to get to the place where the adventure begins :)
I won't have a car. Could you give me any information about transportation in the area?
Thanks a lot!

Hi, it is a stenuous hike and you will probably be tired at the end. Takes about 7 hours and you need to be moderately fit and bring good boots and warm clothes, gloves and beanie. Well worth the effort, great views and go with Abacus.
