About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- pamelacV3220BM0 contributionsBest Day in ScotlandMichael was a great driver and tour guide and also an entertaining conversationalist. He took us to as many places as we could squeeze into one day, including Sterling Castle, the Kelpies, a drive by Doune Castle (Winterfell in Game of Thrones), and of course a visit with some highland coos. We had a great day and it was a favorite of our trip to Scotland. Would definitely book again!Written October 13, 2024
- Carol P0 contributionsA Fabulous Day at St. Andrews, Falkland, and Other Scenic Stops! My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our all-day tour of St Andrews, Falkland, and other scenic stops in Scotland. Our guide, Alan, greeted us promptly at our cruise ship in Edinburgh, dressed in a kilt and a thistle (purple) jacket. The van used for our trip was comfortable for seven guests, and Alan’s lively commentary was easy to understand, and full of facts without including too many details. The stop in Falkland satisfied both the Outlander fans and those wanting to do bit of shopping and have a tea or coffee. We had plenty of time in St Andrews, as was our wish, to explore the course, enjoy lunch at Forgan’s Restaurant, and shop for both golf-related items and other mementos of our visit to Scotland. The trip back to our ship was accomplished in a comfortable amount of time and included a stop in a quaint fishing village for photos and restroom breaks. Several of our group even had time to stop at a local pub in South Queensferry for a final pint before we sailed away from Scotland. Also of note, is that my emails to Niall and Kylie to plan this fabulous day were always answered promptly and completely, putting my mind at ease. Scottish Guided Tours is a quality company and you will be very happy touring Scotland with them.Written October 11, 2024
- violetgeisha0 contributionsAlnwick Castle, Viking Coast, and the Holy Island of LindisfarneThis tour was the highlight of our entire trip to Scotland! Our tour guide's name was Calum, and he was extremely knowledgeable, very kind, and willing to answer any history question I threw at him! I booked this tour mainly wanting to see Alnwick Castle (as a huge HP fan), and it was gorgeous, but exploring the Holy Island of Lindisfarne was actually my favorite part of the tour. Calum gave us some free time to explore Lindisfarne, and we saw parts of Scotland so glorious, it was like stepping into another world - rocky coastlines, dark waters, ancient ruins, an enormous castle, cobblestone paths, an ancient chapel, cold winds - I could go on. I won't be forgetting the Holy Island any time soon. Lindisfarne also makes excellent mead! Calum was also very flexible with our requests. I was hoping to see Barter Books while in Alnwick, one of the largest secondhand bookstores in Britain, built inside of an old railway station. It was absolutely gorgeous, and I had plenty of time to purchase some keepsakes there. I only wish I had saved more open space in my luggage to bring back more old books! Calum took us down routes that allowed us to view parts of Edinburgh and the east coast that were suited to our personal interests and see places I hadn't even thought of looking up. I'm very grateful he did this, because I learned about other parts of Scottish history that were too interesting to miss out on. I also saw some of my favorite views in all of Scotland this way. This tour was worth every penny and was easily the best tour I've ever been on. Many thanks to Scottish Guided Tours and Calum for an amazing trip!Written October 6, 2024
- DMSKAJ0 contributionsA day at St. Andrews and the HighlandsThe tour was St Andrews and Fife Fishing Villages. Spending the day with our tour guide, Michael H was outstanding. We had the best time. Michael was so friendly, knowledgeable of Scottish history, and the village of St. Andrews. He knew we were golfers and made our visit to the course something we will always remember. - haleybale0 contributionsFavorite Day of Entire VacationI cannot recommend using Scottish Guided Tours enough! I was a perfect day and the best money spent. We had Michael take us to St. Andrews and the beach towns around there. He knew so much history and made sure we saw exactly what we wanted. He knew areas off the beaten track and history around it all. Michael really does his homework. We saw the cathedral and castle in St. Andrews as well as the Old Course and lunch at the club house. We also stopped in Falkland and a couple other little towns on the coast with a stop at a little church that turned out to be one of our favorite sites. I wish we had scheduled all of our tours in Scotland with them. It is well worth the money to see exactly what you want to see how you want to see it. Michael asked us lots of questions to get to know us and understand what we were interested in to make the experience the best for us. We based our 6 days in Scotland in Edinburgh and traveled from there using 2 group tours and 1 day with Scottish Guided Tours. I definitely should have used Michael instead of one of the group tours. I will remember our day with Michael forever!Written September 29, 2024

- Z897WNjudyr0 contributionsBest day possible in St. Andrews and FalklandFour of us were picked up right at the dock from our cruise ship in Rosyth, Edinburgh and drove to St. Andrews. Toured this beautiful old town including the Old Course, the University, the Castle and Cathedral ruins. Had a great lunch. Then drove back to Edinburgh via Falkland which is utterly charming with an old palace you don't want to miss. This all day tour which he custom designed for us was the highlight of our 16 day cruise. Niall was our guide and I can't say enough nice things about him. He promptly answered questions by email before the trip. He is fun, funny, smart and genuine. He is a fantastic guide, a good person and it was the high point of our trip.Written September 9, 2024
- MJWW0 contributionsPerfect day with great guide.Wonderful day with Michael on a drive and tour of St Andrews. He was prompt with pick up in Edinburg and knowledgable with information during our drive. Took us to several beautiful, historic locations in town and then to the golf course where our group had lunch and then walked the golf course. Michael was very friendly and engaging. Would highly recommend this company for private guided tours. Thank you!Written September 2, 2024
- tsM5139IR0 contributionsGreat Experience with a Solid CompanyWe were a couple on a private 4-day tour through the Isle of Skye. Alan is an extremely knowledgable tour guide/driver (history, locale, culture, wildlife, highlights & lesser-known wonders, way-finding, itinerary planning to make the most of changes in the weather, ...). Our vehicle was new-model, clean, comfortable van. We were able to see and experience everything on our wish-list and more. There were castle & distillery tours mixed with amazing 'must-do' sites as well as shorter & miles-long walks. Great rest stops, meal suggestions and general conversation.Written August 13, 2024
- marianthi0 contributionsFantastic day with MichaelWe had an amazing full day trip through the Scottish highlands and to Loch Ness with Michael. He was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and provided great insight and commentary on the historical places we visited. He was wonderful with our three boys and made our tour a fantastic day.Written August 5, 2024
- P8049PGlaurenn0 contributionsHighlight of our trip!Travelling from Toronto, Canada with my mother, my husband and my sister and brother-in-law, the five of us were looking for a two-day tour that would help us get a taste of the Highlands without worrying about renting a car or having to drive ourselves. We provided a rough idea of the types of things we'd be interested in seeing, and Scottish Guided Tours far exceeded our expectations with a completely custom itinerary. Not only did we get to hit the castles and whisky distillery tours on our list, but we also go the chance to see off-the-beaten track hidden gems, and sites we never would have thought to look for ourselves, all with the benefit of a guide who was familiar with the area and able to tell us about the history and significance of the places we passed through. Michael was an absolutely incredible guide - so knowledgeable about the area, a great storyteller and someone who we really enjoyed chatting with over our two days together. We packed a lot into our 10-day vacation, but the two days we spent with Michael was definitely the highlight for all of us. Can't wait to book another tour for our next trip to Scotland.Written August 3, 2024

He helped us find a nice pub for lunch. He was on time in the morning and got us back to the ship in plenty of time. I was never nervous about getting back. He was on it! I would definitely book again! Thanks for doing such a great job!Written July 31, 2024

If ever I am asked by my friends which tour agency to use ,if they want to visit Scotland, I will certainly recommend Scottish Guided Tours.
As early as January when I worked with them on the customised tour for eight persons, they were highly professional and provided personalised service to accommodate our requests for airport transfer from Edinburgh to St Andrews at 12 midnight, arranging for pickup for us at the car rental office and making special arrangements to pack our golf bags etc. The overall cost was reasonable and payment terms was fair.
Overall, we had a memorable trip around Scotland in May/June, mainly because we had a jovial, good natured , knowledgeable and cheerful guide cum driver. The agency also ensured that the car that was assigned was sturdy , safe and could comfortably take all of us ,our golf bags and luggage. The tour agency also booked our dinner meals at the restaurants at every town before hand. Every place we visited was given ample time for us to absorb the grandeur and beauty of the scenes of Scotland. Throughout, the tour was at a leisurely and comfortable pace for us.
Certainly, Scottish Guided Tours will be highly recommended to anyone deciding whom to choose as the tour guide for Scotland.

Scottish Guided Tours is the BEST, from booking to the tour itself. During my research, I contacted a number of tour operators and Niall stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Niall was a joy to work with - all my inquiries did not phase him and he was always prompt and detailed with his responses. Niall was accommodating in customizing our tour itinerary and making sure that we hit all the spots I wanted to see.
Alan was our tour guide and he is one of the best tour guides we have ever had. We spent 5 days with Alan and he was professional, punctual, engaging and extremely knowledgeable. Alan took us to some amazing cafes off the beaten track. The van was comfortable and spacious. Alan had binoculars for us to view wildlife and an extra poncho when one of us forgot our raincoat. Scottish Guided Tours thought of everything! Alan gave us plenty of time to explore and was very flexible with the schedule.
That is the best part of having a private tour guide - the flexibility to cater to your schedule and interests. We spent time looking at dinosaur foot prints, visited the dino museum in Isle of Skye, Outlander locations (ahem, I admit they were for me) and did many of the scenic hikes. Alan knew where to park and where to go at what time to avoid the large bus tours. We will never forget the adventures we spent with Alan on our tour. We were so sad to part ways.

Niall led our group of 10 on a weeklong tour of Scotland starting in Edinburgh to isle of skye and back. From our initial contact with him months ago through the planning process and it’s final execution, Niall was exceptional! His knowledge of Scottish history is immense and his ability to deliver it in the most entertaining fashion makes him standout among all the guides we have had in our travels. He always knew the most efficient way to get us to our destination and how to best enjoy it once we were there. While en route from one location to another he would regale us with stories of Scottish history and folklore. His storytelling style is so very entertaining that it truly made the travel part of the adventure. He always seemed to have a sense of when we needed to take a quick break from riding and had brief stops planned out in his head. Having said this, he was also able to pivot as dictated by weather or interests. We had a great trip and this is largely, if not entirely, due to Niall.
If you are planning a trip to Scotland, you owe it to yourself to contact Niall. We lucked into him and are so very grateful we did.

Without a doubt, this was by far, the BEST trip EVER!! My parents and I booked a 6-day private tour with Niall McOwan and it was truly the trip of a lifetime! Niall made our trip to Scotland extremely memorable and went above and beyond to ensure that we were comfortable and checked off all the places we wanted to see and more. Niall is extremely knowledgeable about the history of Scotland and shared some amazing folklore stories too. He is very professional and excellent at communication especially helpful when I was planning this trip from California with the time zone change. Niall took care of everything from driving, lodging, and eating. He picked out the best places to eat and timed all our stops perfectly. He also knew what was required ahead of time regarding all the Covid restrictions which made traveling so much smoother than trying to do it all on our own. I am eager to plan another trip in the future and will absolutely hire Niall for another epic adventure. Definitely don’t hesitate and book your next trip with Niall!

After many months of excitement leading up to our Scottish Adventure, our 2-day Isle of Skye Tour from Inverness with Niall McOwen, was EVERYTHING we hoped for and more!!! Our adventure included Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, Fairy Pools of Skye, the fishing village of Portree, Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, Quiraing, and Fair Glenn.
After our hike up to Old Man of Storr, we had a lovely picnic style lunch on a cozy plateau overlooking majestic cliffs with spectacular ocean views. The weather was perfect!!! April is definitely a great month to visit Scotland.
Niall is a true storyteller with a wealth of Scottish folklore and history. Niall shared the story of the Warrior Queen, Scathach! I absolutely love the legend. It turns out we had our very own warrior princess, Audrey. Fearless and determined to reach the highest peak Old Man of Storr.
We stopped at the iconic Sligachan Bridge just off the main road to Portree with spectacular views of the Cuillin Hills. Legend has it the river Sligachan has been enchanted by the fairies, and in order to be blessed by the fairies with “eternal beauty”, you must get on your hands and knees by the bridge and submerge your face completely in the water for 7 seconds. When you stand, don’t wipe any of the water off your face but leave it to dry naturally. I would encourage you to dip your face in the river, whether you believe or not. I just like traditions and think it’s important to experience everything. Plus, you never know, it might just work. Although the water is chilling; the experience is invigorating. The enchanting Isle definitely lifts not only the spirits but the soul as well.
Niall was flexible and very accommodating. He planned every hike meticulously. With our group of six adult’s ages 25-60 Niall checked everyone’s skill level. I appreciated that Niall kept checking in on each of us with each challenging hike. Safety was a priority for sure!
Niall is a gentle giant in spirit, quick on his feet hiking up the trails of Old Man of Storr. We had a smooth and epic road trip because Niall drove us around safely through the narrow and winding roads of the highlands, enriching us with the amazing stories, both real and folklore, that each location had to offer.
Along the way, his playlist of traditional Scottish music kept us fully immersed in the adventure. As Outlander fans, Audrey and I got goosebumps when we heard Outlander’s theme song “The Skye Boat Song” playing while we crossed the bridge into Isle of Skye. Also, he wasn’t afraid to change it up when he discovered that he and my husband were both big fans of Elvis Presley.
At the end of our tour, my family and I didn’t want to say good-bye to our dear friend Niall.
An amazing tour with an extraordinary guide.

This was our first time having a private guide/driver for the entirety of a trip and it proved to be fantastic. Eddie was our guide for our 5 day Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye Tour and I couldn’t recommend the experience highly enough. From the moment that he took us on board at Inverness, Eddie made us feel immediately taken care of. He was very knowledgeable about the history and the culture of the wonderful places that we visited and he had some sensational tips for restaurants and distilleries! Nothing was ever too much bother and he managed to fit in everything that we wanted to see. The fact that he was driving and managing timing and distances, made the holiday completely stress-free and thoroughly enjoyable.
Liaising with Niall in the lead up to the trip was easy – he helped shape the trip so that we got the most out of our five days.
Our experience in Scotland was just incredible and I would like to sincerely thank Eddie and Niall for playing a huge role in that.

Our tour of the Highlands and Islands would not have been the same without Niall. He took such great care of us, planned a truly amazing tour and handled all of the logistical details. While discussing the itinerary, we started with the tour offered and he helped us customize our five day trip so we could experience exactly what we hoped. Additionally, we enjoyed our overnight accomodations based on Niall's excellent recommendations. Niall was considerate of our need for breaks, made our evening meal reservations and even packed a picnic lunch on the day we went to the Isle of Staffa.
As we got to know each other, Niall often added a short stop or two of local interest he thought we would enjoy. His ability to adjust our schedule based on the unpredictable Scotland weather and/or our desire to linger at a place longer than planned was a real advantage. Niall was very knowledgable about all-things Scotland and could answer or find the answer to any of our questions. Along the drives he shared so much about the history of the country, lots of stories and folktales, and insight into the culture and people of Scotland. We really got a feel for and understanding of this wonderful place.
We are a family of four adults and all agreed Niall and his tour expertise were one of the best experiences we've had on any of our vacations. We strongly encourage you to consider including Niall in your Scotland travels. We've made a friend and hope to return for more of our own adventures with Scottish Guided Tours.

Niall led our group on a vegan-friendly tour of the Isle of Skye and Scottish Highlands. I can’t imagine touring Scotland without Niall as a guide. He is a wealth of knowledge about Scottish history and folklore, and he makes the stories of Scotland come alive with his Scottish wit and charm. Not only did Niall choose the best spots to visit for our whirlwind tour, but he shared the story of each place as we arrived to each destination. Niall is also a really nice guy, and it was a joy to spend several days with him. I feel that I learned more about Scotland from Niall than I’ve learned from several books I read before my trip. Don’t visit Scotland without Niall!

We were so lucky to have chosen Scottish Guided Tours on our recent family vacation. Niall set up the most phenomenal and thoughtful trip for us and led us through a tour of the highlands and the Isle of Skye that we will never forget! He not only gave us the most wonderful historical perspective on Scotland, but also helped us to learn about the modern country in terms of politics, culture and its people. He also managed to engage our teenage sons with lots of wild stories about castles, lochs, battles and so on. Niall was also super flexible in terms of our family style, and tailored the drives, the restaurants and schedule to meet our needs perfectly. Restaurant and hotel recommendations were spot on.
Incidentally, we had some interesting (snowy!!) weather while we were there and Niall made us feel safe and secure… he is a phenomenal driver as well as an excellent tour guide. Van was spotless and comfy and freshly cleaned each morning. By the end of our tour, we were sad that it was over, but we left knowing we have a dear friend in Scotland.
We will be back soon, Niall! Until then, if you ever plan to come snowboarding in Canada, we would be happy to give you the royal treatment 😊

It was a genuine pleasure to meet you guys and show you a wee bit of my country.
The snow and wild backdrop of the Cuillin shall live long in my memory. Great people make great tours, and you and your family made my part very easy indeed. Thank you.
Please let me know if you require anything in the future, and you always have a friend in Scotland.

We had such a fantastic experience with Scottish Guided Tours for our first trip to Scotland. The four day Highlands and Skye tour was an incredible part of our trip. Communication with Niall to set up the tour was terrific, and he had lots of helpful suggestions for lodging and restaurants and kindly answered all of my many questions.
Our guide for the tour was Eddie and I cannot say enough about what a wonderful guide he was. He was extremely informative about the history of the places we visited and passionate about both Scotland's history and present. He managed to cater to the diverse interests of each person in our group and made adjustments to the tour itinerary as we went along to account for weather conditions, my interest in photography, as well as my teen daughter's newly discovered interest in all things castle-related. And in addition to the popular highlights on the tour he also took us to some less well known, but incredibly beautiful "bonus stops". We all learned so much and felt like we became deeply immersed in Scotland's history, landscapes, and character in a really meaningful way.
We hope to be able to return to Scotland someday and when we do, we will definitely book another tour with Niall and Eddie. And I highly recommend them to anyone who wants an incredible Scotland tour experience.
