The Hairy Coo experience felt more like a road trip with friends than a guided tour. Brian, our Hairy Coo host, shares everything he knows about Scottish history and folklore bringing all the sights to life. His stories are very funny, engaging and emotional. We got very quiet, out of respect, looking at a pile of rocks on the side of the road that most people would drive by because Brian shared the significance of it. The context to the sights are explained on the bus journey there. Once you reach the site, you’re on your own to explore. In some sights, Brian would enhance the experience by showing you how to do things the traditional way. You can use a GPS to drive yourself to the sights but you don’t have Brian to give you the full appreciation of what you’re seeing.

Brian is accommodating, within reason, if you want to go off the trail or swim in the Loch, just ask him. Most of the sites on the trip are outdoors so they are not affected by lockdown. You’ll be missing Doune Castle and the Distillery as they are closed. But you’ll have more time with the outdoor sites. Each day starts at 7:30am and ends at 6pm. The last day starts at 9am. It’s very well planned with sufficient stops for coffee and bathroom breaks. The bathrooms are clean. Brian keeps you entertained during the entire journey. You are never bored.

The company observed social distancing. We had 8 passengers in a 30 capacity orange bus. There were facemasks available. My wife and I felt very safe. The bus is sanitised every day.

This 3 day tour hits the Highland highlights. This tour sets off from Edinburgh, which is convenient for Londoners and Edinburghers. We took the LNER fast train from London (4.5 hours). Setting off from Inverness makes the tour more affordable because accommodation is 50% cheaper and more available than Portree. HairyCoo can book accommodation at Inverness for you, the advantage is Brian will pick you up at the front door versus making your own way to the meeting point.

Amazing. Marty was the absolute best guide. We had a small group so he took us to a lot of extra spots that weren’t on the itinerary. Very knowledgeable and had great food recommendations. He really read our group and was great with telling stories and giving information about the landscapes we passed through. We had all the luck with blue skies and clear views. So happy my friends and I took this tour!

Wonderful experience introducing us to Northern Scotland and well worth the time and money. If you have the choice, ask for Rose to be your tour guide. She is an accredited national storyteller and taught us so much about Scottish history and culture. The Celtic music she played during our drive through the countryside added to the ambience of the experience and her long experience of driving buses made me feel very secure in the narrow winding roads of the Highlands. She made sure that people travelling together were able to sit together or very close together, provided sufficient bathroom stops, and always did a close headcount to make sure nobody was left behind after a stop. She also recommended some very good and not expensive restaurants to eat at during our lunch stops.

The favorite part of the 3 day experience was our guide, John - The King of the North. Great sense of humor, he read the crowd well and incorporated all of us in stories and gently jabbing.

John was extremely knowledgeable and shared his knowledge and experiences freely.

The 3 days we spent with John provided a complete overview of the Highlands, its culture, the people and history.

Highly recommend!

This trip far exceeded our expectations! From start to finish it was fantastic! Our tour guide Marty Party made it extra special with his dad jokes and amazing knowledge of the history of each place we visited.

Make sure to take your power packs for your phones as there are so many beautiful photo opportunities that you don’t want to miss!
Don’t let the risk of rain put you off, just get a rain coat and carry on, it’s only liquid sun after all!
Also going in early March meant we didn’t have to queue for anything and in fact were in the main the only people at most spots which added to the magic.

It was a small group of 9 of us who went and the whole time everyone felt included and welcomed!
There were a couple of solo travellers on our trip and I think it was amazing how they joined on their own but it really was not an issue for them.

If you are looking for a trip to soak up some history and beautiful scenery, in a casual but efficient trip, look no further! The Hairy Coo, couldn’t have done any more to make this experience a memory of a life time for us! Thankyou!!

This was one of the best tours I went on and it will be one of those experiences you treasure for life!
Me and my friends decided to do a trip through highlands and since we were a group of 6 renting a car was too much of a hassle. And oh boy how happy we were that we chose to go on the hairy coo trip!
We had an amazing tour led by Brian with the 6 of us and one other person. The best thing was that we all just clicked, and it did not feel as a tour but rather a trip with friends! Everyone was cracking jokes all the time, talking, and just having fun! Since we were a smaller group (first tour after the lockdown, so I guess people were still scared? I reassure you there is nothing to be scared about!) we were flexible and that led to some awesome experiences. We wanted to go swimming in loch Ness and not only we managed to do that, but Brian also joined us! We of course visited the most famous hairy coo Hamish and fed him the traditional way ;), we went to see Hogwarts express, saw dolphins at Kilt rock in the Isle of Skye (which was the first for us as well as Brian!) and went on an amazing hike to enjoy the views of beautiful highland scenery. Throughout all three days Brian was full of facts and stories about highland history, which were always accompanied by awesome jokes and the most iconic music, from Outlander to Star Wars (you will understand when you go on the trip :D). Though you spend a bit of time on the bus (Highlands are big) there is no dull moment because there is plenty to see on the way, also the stories Brian tells always relate to the landmarks we see. If Brian needed a rest from talking (it was amazing he didn’t lose his voice within the tree days, that man is a legend) or just needed to focus on the drive we played our music and did karaoke, and of course we had to mess with Brian a bit so we played some annoying songs, all in good fun!
So all in all the trip was brilliant! A couple days have passed, but we are still gushing how great it was and I have no doubt we will be remembering this amazing time for a very long time! Can’t recommend this tour enough and thanks to Brian for making it so fun and without a care in the world!

Going to the Isle of Skye has been a bucket-list for me. My girlfriend and I spent some time reviewing tour options and The Hairy Coo was our choice.

Our first day of our 3-day tour of the Highlands was rainy and windy so we told our tour guide John that we wanted better weather. Day 2 on the Isle of Skye had patchy rain but mostly sun, and by Day 3 it was just beautiful. I can’t say whether John changed the weather to our request, but it sure seemed so. Just like the rest of our tour, it seemed like he catered to our every wish. He took us to a meat pie shop in Callander and fish n chips shop in Portree that were literally the best of each I’ve had EVER.

He catered to every person on our hodgepodge group of introverts to the point that on Day 1 we barely said a word to each other; to Day 3 and we are all having lunch together and even some of us meeting for drinks after the tour was over. He joked that we’d all miss each other after the tour was over and in all honesty, we do.

A member of my group said the best description of John as our guide and as of Hairy Coo in general: “they (John) aren’t tour guides…they are Scottish people who want to show us their home”.

We saw the most beautiful landscape in the World, had great laughs (rainbows and the impervious to the cold people from Hawaii (me)) and met wonderful people. Thank you John and the Hairy Coo. We are already looking forward to the 5-day tour in the future.

Hi johnfG1529RG, Thanks so much for the in-depth review of your tour with John. Although I have now drifted off into a dream-like state thinking about those haggis and steak pies in Callander... Haste ye back! Kind regards, The Hairy Coo

If you're wondering which company to book for a trip of the Highlands I 100% recommend booking with The Hairy Coo! Not only was the tour wonderfully planned, but our tour guide Stephen was, in the words of Lady Gaga, "talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before". I absolutely could not ask for a better, more genuine, and friendly tour guide. In between stops he would tell us funny (and some gruesome) stories of the countryside we were driving through, along with "Scottish" music (BTW, I still have Baby Shark stuck in my head).

The tour itself was planned well, with adequate bathroom stops and food breaks. I also appreciated the time we spent at each time. I was initially worried that we would be driving all day and just stopping to take pictures, but each stop had enough time to take the views in and walk around a bit until it got too cold and we took shelter in the bus.

Overall, I can't wait to come back to Scotland and do another Hairy Coo tour!!

The trip was very good, if you hesitate, this is your sign to do it. It's worth every £ and was the best spent money. It actually exceeded all my expectations by far.
All the places we visited were amazing and the tour guide - Brian is a very skilled driver and guide. His passion about his job and Scotland in general can be felt instantly. His stories were told in a funny but informative way and he engaged with all of us during the 3 day trip, managing to creat a great vibe throughout the days and it felt comfortable, like going with friends.

The 3 days trip was definitely a lifetime experience. It covered all the major locations, sights and landmarks. Even though the the tour was advertised without the whisky distillery tour due to covid, they managed to book us in to Blair Athol distillery.

John, aka The King of the North was the best driver, tour guide, story teller and DJ we could have for this trip. He was very passionate about showing us the real beauty of the Scottish culture through his stories along the journey.
John was even prepared with a bag of carrots so that we could feed some Hairy Coo randomly spotted along the trip, and he also had a Scottish flag for us to use as a nice accessory for the scenic selfies.

I'm looking forward to returning for the 5 days version sometime in the furure.
