Let Rabbie's Take You There!
Sep 2019
This is a small group tour with 16 people aboard plus driver/guide. On our tour it was Adam, who was wearing odd boots due to a foot injury, which reminded me of one "slippy" and one "grippy" and then one of the first things he said, with no prompting, was that he did not like the sport of curling!
The tour from start to finish was easily paced with plenty of comfort stops, combined with a chance to eat, stretch one’s legs or see places of interest and often all three at the same time. All of this interspersed with the visits, tours and tastings at the distilleries. Adam would point out where and what and state the time to return to the bus. All our fellow tour members were prompt and we were never delayed which in turn gave Adam an easier time.
We were lucky enough to have a large majority of malt whisky lovers who opted for the max. and we did 7 distillery tastings in the 2 full days on Islay, plus Oban en route Heaven! At the most expensive distillery tastings not everyone took part, let’s just say this was one for Islay malt lovers, and Adam led the lightweights on a walk which I did hear was very enjoyable.
All in all, this was an extremely well organised tour with a full and varied itinerary, which can be enjoyed by Islay malt lovers and their significant others who may be not so keen on a dram.

A tour is such a great way to visit the distilleries - letting your knowledgeable guide do the driving, so you can (responsibly!) sample the whisky to your hearts content! We're glad that you had such a great time, thank you! All the best, Aimee

Great Tour of Islay and it's Iconic Distilleries
Oct 2019
First, our driver/host, David, did a fantastic job keeping the group entertained, informed and safe during the tour. The drive through Trossachs/Loch Lomond on the way to Islay was beautiful, and the tours of the distilleries were fun and interesting as well. The coach was well-kept, modern and clean, and David made a point to stop frequently enough for little shopping excursions, bathroom breaks, and photo opportunities for all four days of the tour. At Islay, Rabbie's booked us in the Bowmore Cottages, which were very clean and relatively cheap. And if you like Islay Scotches, you won't find a wider variety anywhere in the world...the only problem is there's not enough time to sample them all!

What a marvellous tour. To start with, our tour guide and driver was entertaining and knowledgeable. Thanks, Mac (yes, I'm sure you're checking the reviews ...), for your tall tales, myths, facts and anecdotes of times gone by and today. Love that playlist, btw. James has provided a list of the distilleries we visited in his review (James was one of those I shared a Bowmore cottage with). Suffice to say, the tastings were grand, and I came away with far more knowledge of whisky making than I had before. Regarding accomodation - the cottages are comfortable, clean and have all you need. Mac ensured we had all the makings for breakfast including that Scottish staple of porridge.
Every stop along the way was beautiful, with something of interest to absorb.
Note: Mac has to be commended for his diligence in clearing each stop we made of rubbish, collecting others' debris for proper disposal. So a word if you're travelling - do dispose of your rubbish properly, and save the Macs of this world a chore!

Excellent way to visit Islay distilleries
Oct 2019 • Couples
We embadked on this with some trepidation. We are independant travellers and would never normally consider an escorted tour or 'coach trip'. Rabbies and our guide, Mac, have changed our minds.

We both love whisky and especially Islay whisky - but how could we both taste it, when the distilleries are remote and neither of us will agree to be designated driver? So we decided to risk a 'coach trip', and it really paid off.

Mac was superb. He has an enormous repertoire of folk tales and funny anecdotes to keep you entertained during the drives. Every toilet stop is picturesque. We were never bored. He also made sure we got a little extra in the distilleries - and here is the real value is seeing distilleries on a tour like this: the tour company can always get bit extra as the distilleries know they are bringing hundreds of people a year and want them to keep coming.

Mac also found time to squeeze in distilleries not on the itinerary, where they were open and accessible. In the end we went to:

Oban (time for a tasting flight during the lunch break)
Bowmore (tour and tasting)
Bunnahabhain (a wee dram in thr shop - they were undergoing renovation)
Bruichladdich (tasting)
Kilchoman (tour and tasting)
Ardbeg (tour, tasting and lunch - they won best tour guide for us!)
Lagavulin (warehouse experience: we got to suck the whisky from the cask - great fun but by far the most expensive at £30. I suppose Lagavulin can charge what they like...)
Laphroaig (tour and tasting)

Bowmore cotteges where we stayed are also perfect. A great location. Plenty of nearby restaurants, and well equipped kitchens if you want to self cater. Food to make good breakfasts is provided.

Other travelers were also great - all whisky fans doing it for the same reason we were.

Great Tour needs a bit more time
The tour is great, our tour guide keith was very friendly and knowledgeable.

The tour is great, and each distillery visit is different and unique

However I would suggest adding one more day, since it takes 1 day to go to islay and another back.

It would also be nice to add 2 more days and include Jura.

That being said the tour is excellent

Whisky and the magic of Islay
Aug 2019
Delivers on what it promises--tasting whisky. A day to get there and a day to get back are worth it for experiencing the magic of Islay and its friendly people. Do not bring children or teens along. I have chosen Couples below, but the trip is also good for Friends and Solo.

Great whisky tour of Islay - let down only by the Rabbies back-office
Aug 2019
TLDR: Guide/driver fantastic, tour great, staff in back-office very poor with horrendous communication.

I joined the 4-day Islay tour on 07.08.19. Our guide/driver was Catty, and she was absolutely fantastic - very knowledgeable, great stories, really engaging and positive and always looking after every member of the group... couldn't have asked for more.

The tour itself was quite well planned. There are two days of mostly travel, as Islay is not so easy to get to, but it was broken up with some nice places/things to see and do. The two days spent on Islay are great - we made it to the majority of the distilleries (note: check first if your must-see distillery is operational... sometimes they are closed for "maintenance" as Ardbeg was for us), plus a couple of beautiful areas on the north/south coasts which were a nice surprise.

Note on costs: my 5 distillery tours added up to 58.50GBP, including the Oban tour I did during the lunch break. Yours may be different based on distillery availability etc.

My letdown was the communication of the Rabbies accommodation team. After some discussion, I booked approximately two weeks in advance, and was quite shocked that upon landing in Edinburgh and hours before the tour began, I received an email advising me 'Please be advised that there's no more rooms. We put your somewhere else. Now confirm that you've read this.' Not at all apologetic for doing nothing until the last minute, nor for anything else. I found it rather impolite to say the least... Thankfully, I was able to take the last spot in a nearby B&B.

This type of issue is precisely why people are employed in what I hear is a large team... so there is no excuse for not identifying a potential issue (they knew months before that this week was busy due to a festival) and communicating that with me as soon as I booked. Catty, the guide/driver was really lovely and attempted to help, even getting a promise from the accommodation team to email me about it. Sadly, again there was nothing but silence. This is really disappointing, and I consider myself extremely lucky that the situation wasn't worse, especially considering the cost.

All-in-all I still ended up with a roof over my head and was still able to enjoy my time... but Catty, I'm sorry that you got booted over to the other side of the island !

Hi there, We're glad you enjoyed the tour, it sounds as though Catty did a great job making this a positive and memorable trip. I'm just sorry to hear that the experience was let down by some poor communication from our team. Unfortunately with yours being a relatively last minute booking, the hotel had already released our allocation of rooms which meant that we had to book accommodation individually for you. I can see from the correspondence that this was actually done within a few days of your booking, so it was all arranged well before departure. It was an oversight not to contact you until the day prior to the tour and I am sorry about that. I have reviewed the e-mail you received. Though you have paraphrased considerably here, I agree that it was overly abrupt and lacking in the necessary apologies under the circumstances. This is really disappointing and it has been addressed. Thanks for your feedback, we hope that you will consider travelling with us again. Kind Regards, Aimee

Whisky and History - Great Tour!
Jul 2019
A very enjoyable tour! The distillery tours and tastings (we hit 9!) were fantastic - not only did we have very personable distillery hosts each and every time, but were able to experience the process up close, sample many drams of Islay whisky (plus Oban), and gained a detailed understanding of the qualities that made each one unique. The cottages at Bowmore were perfect - like sharing a home with friends we met on the trip, the small group nature of which made it even more endearing. Just as important to me and my travel companion was the opportunity to soak in the scenery and visit many non-distillery locales: Temple Wood's standing stones, St. Conan's Kirk, the Royal Castle of Tarbert, Kildalton, and Finlaggan just to name a few. Our tour guide Doug was fantastic - highly knowledgeable in the many ins and outs of Scotland's history and tradition, and an entertaining storyteller with a great sense of humor. He made sure everyone had a unique and personal journey and left each of us with great memories of the trip. His tour-customized music CD, which clearly took many hours of thoughtful preparation, added a whole new element of "above and beyond the call of duty" to the experience. Highly recommend!
