- 283bernadettea0 contributionsA good introduction to EdinburghWe enjoyed finding our way around the city using the sightseeing bus and having the useful information given there. - hollydI27PI0 contributionsSurprising, informative and delightfully funnyBooked a last minute hop on hop off bus tour thinking it would be a way to waste an hour or so and get around the city, but the tour guide, Johnny, made the experience so much more! The hilarious and informative commentary added a personal touch to the rich history provided by Johnny at the front of the bus- driven expertly by our lovely driver Ryan! It was such a lovely, although brisk, day that we sat at the back of the bus but still felt very included by Johnny- seriously can’t give enough praise to the guys! fully recommend even if you’re a local looking for a good chuckle or a bit of extra info you didn’t know you needed. :)Written April 25, 2023
- KayLarry0 contributionsHop on hop off busWe bought a 48 hour ticket from Peter Richardson, a very friendly and helpful member of staff. This included 3 tours, and of course hop on hop when you fancy visiting an attraction. The green bus has a live guide and makes this tour more interesting for the ad libs. I would recommed staying on for the hour get your bearings then stay on and visit the attractions you want to see. To see the amazing architecture from the top of the bus is quite something and makes Edinburugh one of the most beautiful cities I have visited in Europe. The imposing castle built upon the sheer rock face dominates the Edinburugh skyline. A must see.Written February 10, 2023
- BCMorgan0 contributionsA great way to see the cityOur first open top bus experience. It was really good to see all around the city and hop on and off whenever we wanted. Great value for money, £16 per adult and under 16s free.Written October 30, 2021
- Morag S0 contributionsTourMy son is over from Germany for a holiday after working through the lockdown there. He wanted to see more of Edinburgh so decided to do this tour. The rep at Waverly said the cost was £10 which he was very happy with, on reaching St Andrew's Square the rep quoted £16, it was abundantly clear to this woman that my son's 1st language was not English and saw a chance to get more money, telling him that he could do 2 tours despite being told repeatedly that he only was 1 day in Edinburgh and wanted to do the 1 tour, in the end my son paid the £16 to basically shut her up which in my opinion and his may have been her objective, not a good impression of our beautiful Edinburgh. The tour itself was in my son's opinion wonderful and if it had not been for this person would have received 5 stars.Written September 12, 2020
- SelbyKarl0 contributionsNot COVID safeBooking was easy. Tour was average. However if you want to stay COVID-safe please don’t book. We got on at St Andrews square sat upstairs and wore our masks. People were social distanced however all seats were available for use rather than some marked not for use. This meant as we went round the upstairs was full and potentially 10 other people within a 2M radius. We felt very uncomfortable and got off. Happy to loose the money on the rest of the tour in order to stay safe.Written September 8, 2020
- lisaloach19770 contributionsLove an open top busWe book open top buses whenever we can and the Edinburgh ones were great. You can hop on and off as much as you like and they are very informative. The ones in Edinburgh are particularly good as you can jump on any of them it doesn’t have to be just the red or blue ones. They go all the way to the docks so handy for hopping off to take a tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia. The green busses have live tour guide on a mic and they are very funny.Written August 21, 2020
- 488petem0 contributionsGood routes but lacklustre, generic informationMe and my partner were visiting Edinburgh for the day and she - a local from a nearby town - and I were looking for an informative and fun bus tour of the city. The website and booking tickets is great, the promise of, "Horrible Histories" team input and narration was an attraction too, despite us both being in our late forties! We were disappointed though. The narrator on the recorded soundtrack was like Ewan McGregor with a broom shoved somewhere to keep him on track, sorry to be crass, but we both agreed on that. There was no mention of the toll gates, Deacon Brodie, any of the executions, sanitation improvements over the years, only scant mention of the infamous Burke and Hare... And one laughable mention of an architect who was, "competent". Really? I appreciate with tourists you have to have a clean, generic script, but for goodness sake, add a bit of life and interest to make the narration more interesting. must try harder. We switched to the Horrible Histories soundtrack but there were so few items, it just wasn't worth it. When I return to the city, I'll try one of the many other bus companies.Written August 18, 2020

We queued far to long at the ticket office to get our tickets, about 45 minutes as they seemed short staffed. Don’t do this as their is plenty of people at the St. Andrews square selling the tickets.
Price was reasonable at £8 for one or all 3 buses for £16, we opted for all 3!
The first one was a yellow and blue bus, this one was by far the best - had a live tour guide who was very knowledgable and full of fun and exciting facts. Each bus is about an hour.
We stayed on for this one
For the duration, the other two, one a red one that was a horrible history tour and we got off half way round to go to a Museum. We did the final bus the following morning as the tickets are valid for 24 hours to hop on and off. This one took us to the
Royal yacht Britannia - both these tours tours have a pre recorded guide and head phones are provided as you enter.
If you only want to do one, choose the one with a live guide if you want to see the sights and find out about the city.

Whilst in Edinburgh we decided to do an open top bus tour. We picked up the service at Edinburgh castle and was sold £16 tickets (beware, looking at the website there are cheaper ticket options available that are not offered to you!). We just wanted to do the single tour and get back to the castle in time for a lunch booking, we were told the bus was on a continual loop and would take 75 minutes.
When we got to the main bus stand, the bus just stopped, when we enquirers we were told it would leave at 40 minutes past the hour (this was about 25 minutes), so we went for a stroll in this area of the city.
When we returned to the stand, the bus started to pull away, the ticket seller asked if we wanted to get on and knocked on the door of the bus, but the driver just waved the ticket guy away.
The supervisor then approached and told the ticket guy to never stop a bus (or words to that effect), he said but the bus has left early and these customers (us) wanted to get on. The supervisor then said no it did not leave early (even though at this point it was still not 40 passed the hour!), we work on a special EV…. Time (what ever that is!).
So, we missed the second part of the tour and had to walk back to the castle.
Therefore, feel a bit ripped off and had awful service.

A brilliant way to see the city of Edinburgh and learn some information about the city along the way.
Ticket sellers are located everywhere so it’s easy to buy a ticket & pick up your map and headphones for the commentary. It’s well worth paying £16 for the 24 hr pass for all 3 buses as you get different information & views from each tour. Your time doesn’t start until you use it for the first time (if you buy it at 10am but don't get on the first bus until 12.30 then it’s 24 hrs from 12.30). The red bus is the usual sightseeing bus, the majestic tour covers a little further out to the Royal yacht Britannia & Leith, but my personal favourite was the Edinburgh tour with a live commentary from a guide. Each guide has different facts about the sights you pass (Philip has a variety of Sean Connery facts!) so it’s worth taking the tour a few times to get different perspectives.
Special recognition for our driver who negotiated some tricky sudden road closures due to an accident on the main road meaning diversions, while Philip saved the day with commentary along the new route.
Would highly recommend to anyone and is suitable for all ages.

What a lovely review, thank you.
It sounds like you really enjoyed exploring Edinburgh with our GRAND24 ticket.
Yes, if you buy online the validity of your ticket starts when you first present it, if you buy from our sellers on street or on board the validity starts straight away.
You've made me want to hop on Philip's tour for the Sean Connery facts!
Many thanks

We took advantage of the £8 promotion being offered by the green bus for an introductory tour of the city and took three tours. It was interesting noting each tour guides take on the city and where their emphasis, interests and inconsistencies lay. The first placed a lot of emphasis on the history and architecture of the city, the second appeared to placed more emphasis on the history and legends and the third focussed on the darker side of the city's history. Overall a useful introduction.
Walking around the following day helped us realised just how small the tour coverage was but that was presumably for the green bus tour route so the £8 was good value.

Thank you for hopping on our live guided Edinburgh Tour. It's good to hear how much you appreciated the different tour guides.
The Edinburgh Tour covers the Old and Georgian New Town in the City Centre. We do offer a GRAND24 ticket covering all three of our routes so that you can also head down to Leith, Britannia and the Botanic Garden.
We appreciate you pointing out the good value fo the Edinburgh Tour ticket.

Over all our experience with the buses was good. They are good for getting around the city as you can just hop on and off at the stops you want and the tickets are valid for 24hours so perfect for a short weekend brake. However, the tour is just a prerecorded voice and both times we used it, the recording didn’t match up to the landmarks we were at. There is also limited space under cover so we found our selves very wet as it started to rain mid tour.

Thanks for hopping on. Sorry you did not want recorded commentary - we do also offer, for the same price, a live guided Edinburgh Tour which sounds like it would have suited you better.
Did you mention to the driver that there was an issue with the commentary? I hope so as they can then check at their end or refer the bus for a check.
We have covered seats down stairs as well as half covered upstairs - it is quite a challenge being ready for all weathers in Edinburgh.
Overall it sounds like you enjoyed your ticket with us. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts here.
With kind regards

I’m a big fan of this company and have gone on many city tours around Europe and still think it’s the best way to see the city especially as there’s a commentary on the sights. And you can get on and off at will. I would advise this for the oldies as this saved my legs and I probably saw sights that I was unaware of, would definitely recommend

We (me and my pensioner aged Mum) were in Edinburgh for only a couple of days, so we thought the best way to see as much as possible was to jump on the sightseeing tour bus! We boarded on Waterloo Place after getting our tickets from the staff that are on the street just before you get to the boarding point. We sat upstairs under the covered section got ready for our tour. We decided to do one full circuit first, then decide where to get off second time round. Our guide for our first trip was Johnnie(ably assisted by driver James) ,who was extremely knowledgeable and informative. We decided after our first circuit to go round again as far as Edinburgh Castle so we could explore the Royal Mile, so after the bus returned to Waterloo Place we stayed on. For this second circuit the lovely Elaria took over guide duty, and for someone who does not have English as a first language she did a marvellous job (she's Italian). She got a bit overwhelmed with the support she was getting from the passengers, because she thought she was doing badly, but she was amazing. She clearly has the passion for the city that's needed. After exploring the Royal Mile we re-boarded the bus back to the starting point. The ticket was valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase, so we had time for another circuit the following morning before catching our train home (our guide for this trip was Blair, the driver was Neil) . If you are short on time, or want an informed and relaxed way to the see as much of the city as possible I can heartily recommend jumping on board!

Waste of money right now. The traffic is so bad the buses are well off schedule. My wife and I were never able to catch a bus the first afternoon despite waiting over 30 minutes at a stop. Second day were were walking to a stop and a bus was parked . However the driver would not let us on since he was about to pull away. He still had to wait a minute to pull out due to the traffic while we were just standing there. If you can walk - highly recommend doing a walking tour and avoiding the bus tours. Again, we paid in advance and we’re never able to board a City Sightseeing Bus. Disappointed to say the least.

Wow what a fantastic way to explore the city.
We chose the green route and fell in love with each of the four tour guides we met in the day - each with different styles and humour that really made a difference to our journey. It was nice touch that one of the guides remembered us and greeted us kindly when we met them for a second time.
I would highly recommend the tour, it was definitely value for money, took us close to most of the attractions we were interested in and to top it all off we met some lovely tour guides and drivers who will feature in our stories about our trip to Edinburgh.
Thank you!

We use city sightseeing on our first day in most cities to get a idea of the sights of the city. In Edinburgh we used all 3 routes with our 48 hour ticket which were all very informative and great value for money. The bus even travels to to the outskirts where you can visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. Would always recommend especially if you are only visiting for a brief stay !

The Edinburgh Christmas lights are in the City Centre. They probably are best experienced by strolling around Princess Street, St Andrew Square and George Street.
So saying, the hop-on hop-off bus is an excellent way of discovering Edinburgh and its environs.
