About
Although little known to most, today's Belfast is still a divided city. About 25 kilometers of physical wall separates two religious communities that live side by side. For more than 30 years, this controversial period known as "The Troubles" has marked the city and its residents. Very few people - if there were any - were those who did not suffer violence or chaos in this area.
From this political revolt an unusual area emerged, both communities paint murals in their neighborhoods, murals that tell their story, their political ideals, their culture.
Explore closely, on foot, both sides of the Peace Wall and the world-famous murals of Belfast - a city that earned its reputation as the world's largest outdoor art gallery - and listen to the stories behind them.

- vicoroad0 contributionsDEFINITELY WORTH,UNDOUBTELYStarting from the Republican area, going through murals and IRA roots. Then the second part with a British guide, who supported his own cause too. It has definitely been an outstanding tour, you can breathe the troubles era, touching both reasons to have a United Ireland or keep staying under the union Jack flag. When you reach the wall and the gate, honestly you will feel something in your belly, regardless of supporting one or the other part.Written December 27, 2024
- Sammydavies820 contributionsHighly RecommendVery insightful and informative. Both group leaders spoke of their own experiences which made it a very unique experience. I left with a better understanding of Belfast.Written December 19, 2024

- sunshinegirl6130 contributionsGreat tourThis is an excellent tour. It starts on thr Republican side of town and at the peace wall another tour guide takes over to show you the Loyalist side. Each side gets exactly the same amount of time and gives you a lot to think about. Tour is 3 hours with a restroom break in the middle. You do cover a considerable distance but pace is reasonable and stops are frequent to look at different thingsWritten December 2, 2024
- jonathangG9390FS0 contributionsLearning through important lived experiencesThis was an enlightening experience. The walk was 3 hours, but it flew by. The close up look at different historic sights and the stories shared by our guides gave me so much to research and learn. Our guide for the first part through Falls Road was very considerate and genuinely open to all questions. As an educator myself, I observed his efforts to create a tour for learning and dialogue. His personal anecdotes and emphasis on local and historical context provided a generative atmosphere to think for ourselves. I will never forget this experience.Written November 15, 2024
- Jbibs20150 contributionsOne of the best tours we have ever been onThis should be a compulsory trip for anyone interested in Irish politics. A fascinating and thought provoking few hours learning things that made you question your understandings of what you have seen and heard over the years. Our guide Pod as a republican was candid yet empathetic of religious struggles on a global scale. This walking tour has sparked many a thought provoking discussion. One of the best tours we have been on.Written November 14, 2024
- Freckleface290 contributionsGreat tourInformative, passionate and conflicting info. Great way to hear interesting stories of the past. Not too far to walk and it was all flat.Written October 26, 2024
- simonsH7240GJ0 contributionsEnthralling 3 hoursLiterally both sides of the same story and a very sobering end to a short visit. Should be made into a documentary for everyone to know the truth about how people are living day to day. Both guides were eloquent, clear and spoke from the heart. Some room for humour and personal accounts of West Belfast now and then.Written October 22, 2024
- RGalliford270 contributionsHarrowing dive into a still prevelant issueGerard - ex-IRA prisoner - was our guide on the Irish Catholic side and Mike - grew up during the Troubles - on the British Protestant side. Very large divide still remains between the two factions. Gerard seemed to very much be looking to the future of Ireland, showing us the many memorials. However, the British Protestant side seems very entrenched in the past and remains very bitter. It's a very upsetting and convoluted issue that still stands as tall as the "Peace Wall". Very interesting tour but be mindful that some information does get lost with the noise from the busy road. Mic's aren't provided.Written October 15, 2024
- paulineq8390 contributionsNo long term peace plan in IrelandFirst of all how’s Jack ? What a lovely man he was very very informative of this sad and troubling time here in Northern Ireland . As he told his story of the troubled past of the Republicans and Unionists …….. Overall found the tour to be very interesting as I am in my mid/ late 50,s this story was never to far from the news the troubles was always the name ,our tour guides today sadly have very different stories but we had hoped that due to the peace process the two sides would try and learn to live together one side agreed as this was the only way that a return of the troubles wouldn’t rise up again as Jack said to many innocent people have lost there lives on both sides and we hope this wouldn’t never happen again ! Agreed said the rest of us ….. as I crossed the boarder of the peace wall I personally thought the tour took a dark turn I felt uneasy intimated and uncomfortable the guide spoke more of the bitter and hate not only for the politicians currently in power but for the IRA and catholics . Giving the sense that’s there’s no solution of long term peace in Ireland ………Written October 13, 2024
- V8249LIjennab0 contributionsWorryingI was very torn on what rating to give for this tour as I found parts of it quite disturbing especially the IRA volunteers side. One of his opening lines were “people from England are often scared to say where they are from as they think we hate the English, we don’t, we hate the their government and the British army”. Not very well thoughts through as they do not know who’s on the tour. Yes it states to come with an open mind but shouldn’t the guide also have an open mind too and not generalise as much? I left this part of the tour feeling very uncomfortable as much of it felt like hate preaching and made me understand why there is still such friction in the area with people sprouting such hate. The second guide on the loyalist side was much better and seemed to give a more balanced view of the troubles and offered a solution in order to move forward. His view was more of the two sides needing in integrate which they do not. However when asked whether the wall should be knocked down he firmly said no, they should lock the gates fulltime as those on this side do not feel safe with them open at all. He also spoke of a recent (6 months ago) attack by the republican side which required the wall to be fixed after a bomb was thrown and fires shot across the line at an innocent home. I have given the rating I have as I feel it was reasonable value for money and the best way to describe it is that it gives a good view of the hate and danger still very present in Northern Ireland even in 2024 and with hate filled preachers feeding into that this is not going to be the end of the troubles in Northern Ireland.Written October 4, 2024
- 671christineb0 contributionsA must do in Belfast if you love history!!Great Tour! Very informative tour guides who walked us through two different views of The Troubles. My only feedback is to try an improve the audio. Depending on where you were standing relative to the tour guide it was at times difficult to hear them.Written September 30, 2024

- Q2389FZgregm0 contributionsMust DoThe 2nd time that I've done this tour. You get two completely different perspectives. More than likely you will get someone who directly participated in the conflict. My Republican guide was Paul Hamilton who for years was the driver/bodyguard of IRA and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams. On the loyalist side, Mark who served for the British army. Both men grew up in Belfast and were both uprooted from their childhood neighborhoods because their homes were fire bombed in 1969. Please understand that both of these men still have vivid memories and horrors that they experienced as younger men. You will see that the West Belfast neighborhood that is walked through is still divided along a so-called Peace Line where the gates close at 7:00 to keep the two communities separate. Two separate communities who simply do not mix in any manner. Keep in mind that Belfast has become a booming city, safe, with lots to offer. It is just some neighborhoods that have not moved on emotionally since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Very thought provoking and this tour has affected me deeply. For any political/geopolitical junkie, this tour is a must!Written September 21, 2024
