Belfast Political Tour-Conflicting Stories

What to Expect
Unknown to most, modern day Belfast remains a divided city. 40 kilometres of a physical wall, up to ten meters high in some locations separates two religious communities living side by side. For more than 30 years, the controversial time known as "The Troubles'" has had a powerful impact on the city and its residents.Very few people, if any, were unaffected by the violence that plagued the area and everyone has a story to tell. We invite you to hear first-hand accounts from both sides of this conflicted region. This is a unique opportunity for you to discover the real story you won't get from history books; shared by people who were intimately involved in this turbulent period of modern history. Explore- up close, on foot- the world-famous murals of the city that earns its reputation as the largest, outdoor art gallery in the world and understand the stories behind them.
This tour start at 2.30 PM at Divis Tower on Divis Street and upon arrival, you will be met by a Republican ex-prisoner who will take you on a guided walk along the Falls Road and share their personal story on this 3-hour tour. Photograph the local murals and witness visible signs of this community's desire to be part of an Irish Republic. We pass through electronically-controlled gates leading to the predominately protestant area of The Shankill Road. We meet with a Loyalist ex-prisoner who will accompany you through the streets of the Shankill, while sharing their personal story. You will witness the determination of the locals who wish to remain part of the United Kingdom. You will have the opportunity to sign the Peace Wall, leaving your thoughts alongside those of Bill Clinton and The Dalai Lama.
The tour will finish at the Lower Shankill Road a 10 minute walk from the Start point of 15 minutes to the city centre.
This Tour may not be suitable for children under 16 years at the parents discretion. Please be aware that discussion of murder and violence may be explained in graphic detail.

I was really looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint. You certainly get two different perspectives, and as one who was in my 20’s in the 1970’s it cleared up some misconceptions I had. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed the tour, and understand how complicated it must be to put one together in Belfast, but it had a few drawbacks. First of all it was very difficult to hear the tour guides because so much of the tour took place on...More

Great tour, fascinating and very hard hitting. We did struggle at times to hear our guide on the Falls Road side due to group size, road noise etc. Didn't realise how fragile the situation still is here and it was great to get both perspectives...More

This tour is a must if you are visiting Belfast. Paul and Robert gave us very honest experiences of their times and experiences during The Troubles. It’s sad to think that this happened and people lived this way only a matter of years ago. We...More
