      Worth going to prison for!
We decided to do this as it was something different to do, it’s not every day you get to go into a prison! I’m glad we did, it was very interesting on what life was like inside. It was quite quiet when we went so had a good chance to look and read the information. I would thoroughly recommend a visit for most ages (there are stairs to get you onto the landings).

      Amazing Attraction.
In one word "Amazing" On entry you are greeted with smiles and a friendly tone. The staff are very knowledgeable of the prisons history and workings of a prison. There's lots to learn, see and do. Fantastic activities to keep children and adults occupied Fabulous gift shop with items in a good price range (pocket money to higher priced items) A great day out!

      Escape a real cell!
The cell escape room experience was really fun! Being in a real prison adds to the flavour and the staff were excellent. The puzzles were challenging enough but wrap up warm as it's pretty chilly!

Great few hours out with the three children (aged 12,9 &7). Informative and easy to navigate. Good insight into prisonlife....en
Good way to burn a couple of hours during the holidays. Kids enjoyed it. Restaurant was ideal, chips portions were massive ( much to the children's delight after stopping for a small snack).

Really enjoyed the escape room. Wasn’t sure the prison tour would be my cup of tea but it was surprisingly interesting!
We really enjoyed the escape room was so fun. We also walked around the prison after which was no extra charge and was surprisingly interesting to read all the different facts. Staff were very friendly and helpful and were made to feel welcome.

      Lovely trip out
Came here with my children and girlfriend. Greeted by a very friendly lady on reception who explained everything through thoroughly to us so we knew what was what. The history was very interesting inside the prison and we especially enjoyed the C wing, which can easily be missed if you’re not the best at map reading (like me). The cafeteria was small in size but a good selection of fresh food for everyone. Very interesting all round though, if you have toddlers/younger children they may find the narrow staircases overwhelming, but the beauty of the self guided tour being you go at your own pace. We would like to return child free for the escape the prison adventure and a night in the cells.

You will enjoy any of the tours
What an amazing day. First we beat the hole escape room which was difficult. Second was a guided tour with Graham who I could've listened too all day. Last but not least was the great escape which we did in 2hrs 14mins. Would recommend to all.

The escape room and the prison tour were both fantastic! We did the escape room with kids aged 9-13 and they all loved it!!

Fun and worth the 3hr drive
Great experience. Myself and two of my teenage children came up and walked round the prison, which we enjoyed. Then we did the Hole escape room. Our first escape room experience and it was brilliant! We did manage to escape, with a few pointers, but the kids loved it and we’ll definitely do more escape rooms.

      Deflated
I gave this attraction a 3. For my reasons, as follows. I felt their needed more interactive information for children, their was lots of reading, but as for seeing what prison was really like, my children came away feeling no more informative than when they went in. A theatrical artist/historian to bring the cells to life could make a huge difference. Examples of the most notorious criminals, life like mannequins. Maybe a sensory room where people could view and touch items that may have been used once upon a time. Though this seems like a negative review, it's not all bad. Just a few improvements to make this a full experience for all would be amazing. My bf and I intend to return one day, without our children, for a guided tour, as I believe more insight from a guide would really be appreciated. Staff were polite and welcoming. Our visit their was short, as our children got bored quickly, unfortunately 😐 Little improvements would make such a difference 🙂

      Family half term
We visited the prision during February half term! We enjoyed the experience - self guided tour lasted around 1.5! Went with two children under 10 and they were captivated during the whole experience! I do think its slightly expensive for the time of the experience we paid £40! Lots of information and interesting reads! Staff around are really friendly! It would be good to have more interaction for younger children too as lots of boards to read some of the speakers were really quiet and others didnt work! Overall really enjoyed the experience thank you!

      Dog friendly 😊
Love a dog friendly tourist attraction especially on a rainy half term! We did the self guided tour as with our dog. Lots to see and read, very informative. As the website warns, it is chilly so wrap up warm. The chill adds to the eeriness of the place though!

      Great guided tour with Graham
Great guided tour with Graham. Really informative and insight in to how prisons have changed through the years. Would recommend the guided tour as it really brings to life how it was for prisoners and staff in the prison.

We went on the guided tour which lasted for about two hours twenty minutes. It was led by an ex guard who used to work at the prison which added a little authenticity to the experience. He had a lot of information about the processes in the prison and shared personal stories of his experiences. This was a working prison until only a few years ago which I think adds to the interest. We went in February and there is no heating in the prison apart from in the cafe, so advice is to dress up warm because in the winter you'll be standing around for two hours in the cold listening to the guide. It was interesting but by the end our feet where freezing and I was ready for it to end.
It was very windy and rainy the day of our visit and so the guide did not take us down to the visiting block. We did take a look at it on our own later as you can stay as long as you like after the tour and wander around. Unfortunately there are not a lot of information boards around the place so the advice is book in advance on a guided tour. I think that we would have got round the place very quickly if not for the tour.
There's a small museum that's not too interesting.
It's £4.50 to park your car. We discovered afterwards that on a Sunday the street parking by the station just down the road is free so we could of saved money there. It would of been nice if the staff had of pointed this out.
We were slightly underwhelmed with the visit but would give it a resounding ok. I think that maybe we were spoilt by visiting Kingston Penitentiary in Canada recently which is incredible.

I haven’t actually been to Shrewsbury prison yet as my sister and I were meant to be going there this coming Wednesday 28th for the Ghost Tour. However, I have felt compelled to write this review to raise a point about how Shrewsbury prison have treated their customers with utter contempt after I have been informed this week with one week’s notice that our tour is now cancelled due to “filming”. We are bitterly disappointed as we were both very much looking forward to this with it being so close to Halloween and also to finally have something to do this year that has not ended up being cancelled!! Cancelling because of Covid is completely understandable, but in this case I do not feel that cancelling people’s pre booked tours because in the meantime Shrewsbury prison have obviously accepted a filming contract, for presumably a large fee, is acceptable, and they have totally disregarded their normal paying customers who were looking forward to their events. I only booked this tour near the end of August and was not made aware of any possible filming at the time of booking, so this is obviously a last minute decision the prison has made in the meantime. Apparently the filming and tours cannot mix because of Covid, and so the tours already booked have been cancelled in favour of the filming, rather than the prison honouring them, which is what they should have done. This is not a valid Covid-related cancellation in my eyes.
This would have been poor customer service at the best of times, but considering the year that most people have had, and to have something booked to look forward to, only to have it cancelled for non-Covid reasons because the prison had a better offer, is to me totally unacceptable. I have asked for a refund as the whole point of this tour was for Halloween and it does not reopen again until the end of November.
I won’t re-book to visit Shrewsbury Prison because now I know the ethos that the prison has in regards to its customers. Poor show Shrewsbury Prison, very poor show 👎

We pre-booked our 2 hour guided tour on Saturday 1st February and are glad we did.
The ex prison guard was a perfect host, knowledgable and entertaining. The prison was fascinating, and very cold so dress warmly if you visit in the winter months! The guided tour is really a must as it may otherwise just be a really old building full of rooms with words above some of the doors. The insight into prison life from beginning to end was fascinating. Well worth a visit, have already recommended to friends.

Our 2 hour guided tour around the prison was led by Keith, who was very informative and gave us a great insight in to prison life both from the perspectives of life as a prisoner and as a guard. He took us from the initial booking in processes right through to the Female wing and the Execution chamber and explained how things had changed throughout the prison's 220 year history. Keith spent over 30 years as a prison officer and was based at Shrewsbury prison towards the end of his career so more recent information was all from his personal experiences, which was great. He was also more than happy to answer questions from the group, throughout the tour.

Shrewsbury prison is smaller than we imagined and some of the areas had been cordoned off due to filming taking place, but this did not detract from the overall tour. It was a pity that the visiting room is not set up to show how this would looked and we didn't get to visit the canteen (possibly due to Covid 19 restrictions)

Don't forget to wrap up warm - it's a little chilly in there!!

The prison is really easy to get to and we were able to park right across the road (£5.50) for the day. This enabled us to walk up in to Shrewsbury City Centre for lunch, without having to worry about the time. It's also right next to the train station - so ideal if travelling by train too.

Hello Tasarich Thank you very much for choosing to visit and join a guided tour. We are so pleased you enjoyed Keith's tour and found him informative. Apologies that the Visits room wasn't set up and the restaurant was closed. We have had to restrict some areas to keep our visitors and staff safe. And thank you for your feedback - we do value it

If I could give this more than 5* I would. Mick, our tour guide, was absolutely phenomenal and made the whole experience. It was fantastic having an ex officer of the working prison lead the tour and give you a proper insight into the prison.

Each section of the prison was well explained and given plenty of time for questions, photos and own exploration. The hanging room was very authentic and a huge eye opener to the old ways prisons were ran.

Mick not only gave great little stories of his own experiences, he handled a large group of 44 very well and made it feel like we were on a 1:1! Created a light and friendly atmosphere in a place I thought it couldn’t be possible.

All staff around the prison were welcoming and friendly. Great price for the experience given too

Cannot wait to visit again and see the new Georgian underground tour!!

Without a doubt I would recommend to everyone.

Wow, thank you so much francescaanne_150. It is lovely to read such great feedback as we all work very hard to provide a fantastic experience for our visitors. I will certainly pass on your feedback to Mick, who will be really chuffed. We think he's great but it's fab to hear it from a customer. We look forward to seeing you back at the prison - it starts to warm up now for a few months!

Our friends were coming to stay with us and the weather was appalling so we searched for indoor activities and came across Shropshire Prison guided tours. After reading the reviews we decided to book our tickets, then contacted our friends and asked them to bring warm coats hats gloves etc. Graham was our guide that day, he was very engaging, full of information and some very entertaining stories. It was a real eye opener and we were shocked to hear that up until 1995 there was no toilets or shower facilities in the prison. It was very cold in there too, so the prisoners certainly didn't have it easy.

Thanks Graham we had a great day out and I would highly recommend it.

Went on the lights out tour was a small group of us social distance Measures well thought out and put in place. Was a brilliant tour different to other tours as it’s a prison officer from the actual prison not just someone reading from a script. Will definitely be returning to do other tours and activities in the prison.

Our guide (Mick) was brilliant! He really brought the stories to life and had lots of amazing tales to tell all about his experience of being a guard there! It was a thorough tour that lasted around 2 and half hours (overran due to all the amazing stories) and he was open to answering any questions with enthusiasm. We loved it - highly recommended.

Only note, if it’s a cold day, wrap up warm as the prison is very cold and there’s a lot of standing about when listening to the history.

Our tour was so good, our tour guide/ex officer was named Keith and he was brilliant. He was very informative and there was nothing he didn’t know, he went through every part of the tour in so much detail and was very funny and polite. We didn’t know what to expect when we went as we’ve never really done anything like that before but it was so interesting and I would defiantly recommend going especially if you’re interested in stuff like that.

I have been fascinated with prisons since I watched Porridge as a child in the 70’s, so when my sister brought me a Virgin Experience prison tour for Christmas I was made up. Our tour guide was Mick, an experienced ex-prison officer, who provided a unique insight into prison life, starting from the Georgian times right up to the present day. Mick was knowledgeable, engaging, funny, and clearly enjoys his job. He was passionate about preserving the history of the prison, and provided an insight into future attractions. The two hour tour was amazing value for money and you could stay on afterwards to walk around at your leisure, take photos, enjoy the restaurant, museum and shop. The day we visited there was a prison break activity taking place, which provided an insight into the sights and sounds of a prison. The only issue was there was a lot of standing, which for me was difficult, due to my back, so having somewhere to sit down at certain points of the tour would have been helpful. Overall, Shrewsbury Prison is well worth a visit, and I would recommend the tour.
