Visiting Hadrian’s wall was one of the things on our ‘bucket list’ so we decided to book a tour to fully experience the wall. The day was divided into three sections. Firstly we were entertained by Kevin, dressed in celtic garb giving the story of how and why the Romans were in Northumbria. We then walked a section of the wall experiencing the ruins. Secondly we visited Vindolanda - a live archeological dig site, Roman Fort and museum. Kevin explained well the different aspects of the fort and the highlights of the museum. Aspects were shown that would have been missed if visiting without a guide. Our final visit was to the Homestead Fort, which for me was the highlight. Another large Roman Fort (ruins) attached to Hadrian’s wall to life put it all together. We found the day very informative, packed and for us well worth the cost - particularly as entry to the forts was included. As an added bonus we were able to see the Sycamore Tree (The tree filmed in Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood). A worthwhile and enjoyable day.

We thoroughly enjoyed our guided walk with Kevin who provided us with lots of information, but it never felt like a lecture, more like a conversation. The Vindolanda Museum was impressive and made all the better for Kevin pointing out the most fascinating finds. It was also interesting to see conservation in action at this site. Kevin brought alive the stories of Roman Britain and even got into character to make it an unforgettable day.

We had Kevin show us around Hadrians Wall and the nearby sights and museums, which was great! Kevin has a great wealth of knowledge and is very friendly. He is particularly good at pointing out interesting facts about things in museums that you may normally skip past. We highly recommend this tour!

I was curious about Hadrian’s Wall, and Kevin gave us the perfect tour to illuminate us. The amazing history came alive with his clear and vivid descriptions and the items of clothing and weapons he shared. Kevin gave excellent answers to every question. Highly recommended.

Excellent guided tour. Kevin is well informed, enthusiastic and approachable. Plenty of time to ask questions. Weather can be dodgy (cold & wet) in that part of the world so dress appropriately. Then you will enjoy every minute.

Solo
Due to a group cancellation on the day, I was fortunate to have a solo tour with tour guide, Kevin. His deep knowledge of Roman history in Britain & his passion for Hadrian’s Wall &, in particular, Vindolanda ensured it was a memorable experience. Thoroughly recommended.

Without doubt, this is one of the most enjoyable and informative days I've ever spent. Kevin is a talented communicator and historian, and we felt privileged to have been able to have have him with us throughout the day. His knowledge is so extensive that he is quite easily able to take the conversation and information in any direction you wish. This is not a standard tour, but one that is pitched to the interests and knowledge level of his guests. I'm certain that if you were an academic or someone who knew nothing about the Romans or ancient Britain, you'd have an amazing day and feel that you really understood what it was like to live up on the wall 2,000 years ago. Really, don't visit Hadrian's Wall without Kevin - you'll miss so much

A complete surprise as part of a gift weekend from my husband, I was thrilled to have the opportunity of meeting Kevin Robson, a Celtic warrior! Not a name you would normally attribute to a Roman fighter but after changing into battle dress, he certainly looked the part and introduced himself by his Roman 'nom du plume'.

Not knowing much about Roman history other than what I had learned over 40 years ago at school - which admittedly was a rather dry and tedious offering  although livened up a number of years later with a couple of viewings of Russell Crowe in 'Gladiator' - I  was not sure how 4 hours could be filled with what turned out to be a personalised tour!  I needn't have worried though - Kevin was as engaging as he was knowledgeable and the time flew past in no time at all. This was quite some feat considering the wind chill factor as we walked alongside the iconic Hadrians Wall but he nailed it with his very real passion and love for this period in our country's history.  Kevin, who admitted he has always loved being outdoors since he was a small child, also looked like he was strolling out on a summers day - so that helped!

Kevin picked us up from the new visitor centre at Hadrians Wall (adjacent to the pub 'Twice Brewed') and drove us to the picturesque start of the tour, where he added to the clothes he was wearing with a chainmail vest of iron and brought out two swords, a fighting shield and a Roman helmet. He then started his historical storytelling with his engaging manner and checking in with us, ensuring we understood.  He also gave us room for plenty of questions and once you start becoming interested, Roman history does make you want to ask a lot and learn more!

After walking a stretch of the wall, Kevin drove us the short distance to Vindolanda, a former key military post on the northern frontier of Superior Britannia!  A fantastic Roman archaeological site, this really brought the tour and what we had so far learned to a new level of understanding and experience. The landscape of this uncovered garrison and town is stunning and one of the highlights (of which there were many) was standing at the top of a replica fortress, overlooking the excavated site imagining the smells, sights and sounds of nearly 2000 years ago.

Viewing the remarkable treasures unearthed at the Vindolanda, including hundreds of intact leather shoes, I was interested to see that even as a history 'rookie' you can volunteer, with appropriate training, to work on future excavations.  I suddenly found myself being interested in the possibility - something that would never have crossed my mind before taking the 'Roaming with a Roman tour' with Kevin. Since returning home I am even now watching the 'Meet the Romans' documentary with Mary Beard and loving it now I feel that much more knowledgeable!

We so enjoyed the day with this very knowledgeable guide, we could not fault him. He was so informative, accommodating and easy to be with, I wished we had had the children (either now or when they really were children) with us to enjoy this with us too. What a lovely introduction to Hadrian's Wall, and it helped make sense of other places we visited on subsequent days.
