- lenasU4148ZC0 contributionsAn awesome Herriot and Dales tourChris was an excellent and knowledgeable guide and the small size of the tour excellent to have the best views of the Dales. It was all stunning. I love James Herriot so enjoyed Thirsk and all the references to the filming as we went along the tour. The scenery was very special and the Devonshire pub an ideal lunch spot.Written September 29, 2024
- johnpH1763ZW0 contributionsJohn S made the All Creatures Great and Small Tour so special. We met John S the tour guide and driver for All Creatures Great and Small Tour, York UK, Duncombe Pl on Sept 29. From the moment he met the group he confirmed whether folks waiting were or were not with the correct tour. He was so friendly and welcoming. First, it was evident John is a safe and confident driver. He began with clear instructions about safety and seat belts. He outlined the tour and the day. He is so knowledgeable and such a great speaker. We are from America and have had some trouble understanding people in the UK. John has a beautiful speaking voice and accent. John pointed out so many interesting details about topography, history of the Yorkshire Dales, James Herriot, each village we visited. He was patient the two times people were only a bit behind schedule. He’s a wealth of knowledge. We went on many tours in this three week trip. John S was the best tour guide we had on any of them. He is actually very polite and somewhat elegant in his speech. It was such a highlight of our UK bucket list trip to enjoy this tour with such a professional and entertaining tour guide. Can’t thank John S enough. John and JaniceWritten September 29, 2024

- BobD8000 contributionsAll Creatures Great & Small in the Delightful DalesOur day with Grand Yorkshire was a dream come true! We were picked up promptly at our hotel in York by our exceptional guide, Chris. Chris did an outstanding job communicating throughout the booking process to include details, itinerary, and even place lunch orders at the Drover’s Arms in order to maximize our tour time.He even reserved our dining spot in the “All Creatures” room. Our first stop at the World of James Herriot Museum was a delightful way to begin our day. Being in a small group tour with 2 other couples allowed for plenty of photo stops along our route to the breathtaking scenery of the Yorkshire Dales and the famous scenes from the show including Grassington (Darrowby), Helen’s farm, and the church where James and Helen’s wedding took place. Chris even had the music from the show playing in the background as we stopped to admire the stunning vistas, After a Wensleydale Creamery stop to enjoy fresh cheese samples, we traveled back to York after our glorious day together. If you are a fan of the show, this is the tour for you, and Chris and Grand Yorkshire tours provide excellent service!Written September 22, 2024
- melanierK9610FY0 contributionsGorgeous day with a small group, personalized to our needs.Chris our driver, sure gave us a full, gorgeous scenery day driving through the Dales. With the group being smaller, Chris personalized the day to our interests. He was very knowledgeable on the area, and drove with great skills navigating the narrow roads. We would book this tour again with ChrisWritten September 17, 2024
- Lori H0 contributionsWonderful Trip Through the World of James Herriot.Chris, our guide, was so wonderful, he knew the area and the history so well. He was right on time picking us up at the hotel. We saw many places a large tour bus would not be able to go. It was great only having a group of 6! We had many stops to take pictures and even had a few extra stops because we were a little ahead of time. There was no rush at all, we got to take our time a day see everything. I highly recommend this tour company!Written September 14, 2024

- patriciabL6368HY0 contributionsIncredibly scenery and local knowledge! This was a wonderful experience! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about not only James Herriot, but also the Dales, the local scenery and attractions, the architecture, etc. Marvelous scenery and so much local knowledge. It was a lovely way to really experience the countryside of England. Chris was flexible to everyone’s needs and interests and made sure we were all comfortable and happy. - RetroFan0 contributionsDelightful day in the DalesHotel pick up and drop off is a welcome luxury. This small group tour in a comfortable van took us all over to see so many beautiful sites including the James Herriot museum in Thirsk which is lovely and well cared for with lots of cool historical artifacts on display. Pete knows the area well and you certainly want HIM driving those tiny roads into oncoming traffic. Plenty of stops along the way with interesting commentary made for a delightful day. He arranged for us to preorder lunch at a pub in Grassington which expedited things and was quite good. A highlight of our trip.Written August 2, 2024
- colinmc120 contributionsWonderful day in Yorkshire DalesWe had a great private tour with Chris, who picked us up from our hotel in York and made the day truly memorable. Chris’s expert driving and thoughtful guidance set the tone for a wonderful adventure. Our first stop was Fountains Abbey, which was a stunning start to the day. We then enjoyed the Swaledale walk from Keld to Muker, reaching a breathtaking viewpoint about 20-30 minutes into the trail before turning back. Following that, Chris took us to the impressive Hardraw Force and wrapped up our tour with a quick visit to the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Chris’s friendly demeanor and smooth driving made the entire experience seamless, and we appreciated his attention to detail as he drove us back to our hotel. This tour was an absolute highlight of our trip, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide.Written July 30, 2024

Wonderful day with Pete on our tour. We learned a lot and appreciated the “insiders view” of the North York Moors from a native. Although we ran into an unexpected hiccup in Whitby due to no fault of Pete’s, he found an acceptable alternative and he and Chris both worked extra hours to get us the experience we paid for. I was impressed with their professionalism & it was worth every pound we paid despite slightly soggy weather! Highly recommend.

We loved our day exploring the varied and beautiful sights of North Yorkshire. Our guide Chris was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He shared lots of interesting historical facts and local insights that added to our enjoyment of the experience. The mix of sights and activites was perfect--from the dramatic windswept scenery of the moors to the charming market town of Helmsley and the bustling seaside city of Whitby. The steam train ride was lots of fun too. Other highlights included a quick visit to Helmsley Castle, fish and chips lunch, drive through Hutton Le Hole, and a stop to view the medieval church murals in Pickering. However, our favorite activity was visiting the historic ruined abbey in Whitby. Truly a memorable day. Thank you!

Nice trip to Whitby via some pleasant villages, lovely scenery along the way. The steam train journey on the return was excellent. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, and we were driven in a small capacity minivan. Well worth the time and money.

The day was perfect! Pete was a wonderful, knowledgeable and personable guide. Growing up in Yorkshire he was able to give such a personal touch to every place we visited. The villages and the moors were magical. Whitby was a fascinating town that surprised us both. The steam train was very special and loved the station! Pete was helpful in some very specific requests we had. I can't recommend the day highly enough. The tour whet our appetite to return, and we will be planning to go back some day!

I can’t say enough about this tour. It was absolutely fantastic. I honestly can say I have never had a better tour guide. Chris literally drives you through his home and provides a wonderful balance of history and lore as he takes you along back roads that lead to areas only he knows about. He even added an extra piece to the end of the tour, which he could have secretly skipped. He is also very personable, talking about home life growing up in the area.
The tour itself was fantastic and it was brought to exceptional life with the help of our tour guide. This is a must for those who want to experience the history and culture of Yorkshire.

Chris, driver and guide, was entertaingly knowledgeable, with interesting information and tips for getting the best out of the places we visited. He did this approachably without being condescending as some guides are.
We also stopped off more than I expected for photo opportunities and to visit a couple of interesting local sites. The main attractions lived up to my expectations and I had a very enjoyable trip.
Lastly, the main selling point for me was that there was a max of 7 people. Seeing other larger groups, there is a sense of them being hussled, whereas we were relaxed and each of us had plenty of time to speak to Chris individually.
Heartily recommended.

What a day! We saw the amazing Moors, idyllic villages, took a boat tour in the North Sea in Whitby and rode a steam train. Chris is an amazing tour guide: a local who knows every road and village and we certainly saw things we NEVER would have seen on our own. He even showed us where to wait for the train to get the best experience as it entered the station. He was also so patient and understanding with our young boys and gave us choices of different opportunities along the way. A great experience and highly recommended!

A great way to spend a day trip from York with my teen. This full day trip was done in a very nice and clean small van. So nice to have someone else do the driving and arranging the timing and tickets for the steam train. The tour allows for about an hour on the steam train which is plenty! The guide and driver, Chris, was friendly informative and a fabulous driver. We were picked up and let off at the door of our Airbnb. There were many stops and opportunities to wander during the day. Chris was helpful in pointing out sites and options that I am certain on our own we would not have found. Highly recommend this tour.

We were picked up from our accommodation first thing in the morning it was a small group tour of just 7 people in total. The guide was local to the area, extremely knowledgeable and amiable. We first stopped at a quaint village for a walk around and coffee. We then continued onto the Moores learnt about how they came to be etc. Our guide spotted grouse and stopped to show us. We then went onto to Whitby which was a fabulous place to visit as it is famous for its fish and chips. Lovely views from the Abbey. After a couple of hours there we went to a station and got onto a steam train which was wonderful. All in all a truly fantastic day was had by us all. Our guide went above and beyond to give us a good snapshot of Yorkshire Countryside. He was extremely knowledgeable,I would recommend this trip it's well worth the money.

The whole day from start to finish was fantastic. Our tour guide Peter was very friendly and informative. We had such a fun day out, getting to see some beautiful sites as we drove through the moors, ride the steam train and enjoy fish and chips in Whitby. It wasn’t a big group either so it felt very friendly and intimate and we could actually speak to everyone and ask questions. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a tour or something to do whilst your in York.

Is this a seasonal tour, or does it run year-round ? We'll be visiting York in December.
Written September 12, 2019
I’m certain that they run all year but drop them an e-mail. I had to get in touch before booking as we needed to know if they could cope with a wheelchair ++ and they came straight back to me so that we got a dialogue going.

What time does the tour get back to York?
Written August 12, 2019
We got back just after 5pm, mainly due to the torrential rain on the way back. Well worth doing though as a great day out. You need to read the small print though as the train trip does cost an extra £10 per person on top of the cost of the trip itself. Well worth £10 though.

Hi! Most of these trips do not include the actual steam train ticket - the list of inclusion here also does not indicate a steam train ticket. Do you have to buy the train ticket separately? If so, isn't the steam train ticket on its own like £33 each? Thanks

We had the York sightseeing three day pass so it included the steam train. I think it is only around 12 or 13 pounds though if you pay for it separately. It is not a long train ride but enjoyable. Maybe there is a longer route that costs more money. If you get the York sightseeing pass, you have to let the driver know before he goes to buy the tickets. He didn’t ask ahead of time and we didn’t know to tell him, so he had to go get refunds for 4 people. This was a great tour. We thought the guide was fantastic.

Is it possible to join the tour n Whitby?
Written July 1, 2019
Sadly no, the Tour starts in York and goes up onto the Moors stopping at several villages en route, before dropping down to Whitby for a lunch stop

Program says Departure Point is Y01 7EF from York. I will be staying in a hotel in York for my upcoming visit from June 28 to July 03. In order to nail a hotel that is near your pick up or departure point, I need to know where, and ASAP. I don't drive so will commute everywhere by foot in the city. Thank you.
Written May 17, 2019
The Best Western Dean Court Hotel is right by the departure point which is Yorkminster. They were so nice at that hotel and let us sit inside as it was raining a bit before the tour bus arrived. Any hotel that is near Yorkminster would be fine. It’s an easy walking town, very flat.
