About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Dorestop0 contributionsWhitby audio tourGreat tour. Devon’s Local knowledge was informative with lots of fun stories relating to folklore and legend. Particularly enjoyed his memories of his childhood and how parents could conjure up scary tales to excite children’s imaginations. Full of snippets of historical and cultural info about Whitby, however, not overbearing so kept us interested. GPS worked amazingly well. Kept you on the right path and will notify you if you veer off in the wrong direction. Explored areas we otherwise may have missed. Took us just over an hour, however you could have a coffee stop or lunch and then carry on. Great way to avoid group tours and explore at your own pace. Co-incidentally, Devons partner passed us as we were listening to the tour. Nod to her as it added a bit of quirkinesses and authenticity to the storyteller. Thoroughly recommend for all age groups, adults and children alike. Easy to download and you have it for life so could return to it in future visits. 😀👍Written September 12, 2021

We came in to Whitby on the Middlesborough train joining at Castleton Moor at around 11.00. We left Whitby at 16.00 for the return. It was charming and scenic.
This line is a lot cheaper than from Pickering, except without any steam engines.

First time to use this type of app and found it very easy to use. The narrator was excellent, both informative, light hearted and easy to listen to. The whole package is excellent with the ability to pause and rejoin the tour or to listen to the commentary away from the tour to remind yourself about certain facts or stories. Highly recommended and would use similar tours again.

This was the first time I have ever used an GPS-triggered audio tour of a town. I must say my wife and I were pleasantly surprised at how well this tour worked. The narrator gave clear directions to help navigate around the city. He gave detailed explanations of all the key landmarks, and a few side alleys thrown in for good measure. He painted a quaint picture of the town and helped us to appreciate its beauty even more. It is worth pointing out that following a self-guided tour allows you to take it at your own pace, and also revisit places on another occasion.
As for the technical aspects, overall the tour works very well. It uses GPS to trigger the audio when you are within a certain distance of a point of interest. It does presumably mean you need adequate 3G signal strength. I would, to avoid technical hitches, recommend downloading the audio using WiFi, before you set off on the tour. When my wife and I were using the tour on our own separate devices, we did find that the audio triggered at slightly different times, but this was not a major issue as we could pause and rewind the audio. Turning off power-saving modes on our phones made things trigger more in synchrony. While using the tour our phones seemed to drain a lot of battery. I presume this is because we had the screen turned on to use the map and due to its use of GPS. Hence I would recommend starting the tour with as much battery charge as possible, or use a portable battery charger.

This tour was easy to load onto our phone and gave us a really interesting walking tour of Whitby, which we could do at our own pace.
We stopped off en route to visit the Whitby Museum and then for a cuppa and cake in Sanders Yard Restaurant.
Our local guide was Devon Howard, who had superb knowledge of Whitby and guided us around, with a great sense of humour.
A fab way to see this glorious town, even during Coronavirus restrictions.

The app was easy to load and the instructions were very clear. The comentary was excellent giving us easy directions to each stopping point where he pointed out interesting places giving the history as well as local stories/legends. It was a great way to see Whitby visiting different parts of the town we wouldn't have seen. An excellent day and at avery reasonable price., so worth it.

What a wonderful overview of the history of Whitby, it’s really enhanced our visit. I’m not very technical but despite that we managed to get everything working. We did the tour over three days, it was great to be able to stop and start multiple times. The route is quite hilly in parts (not surprisingly) but we’ll worth the effort. Thanks, loved every minute and every nugget of information, great fun.

What a brilliant way to understand this beautiful place. An ear bud each, two dogs and a fascinating walk with the funny, informative and crucially - local guide.
We could stop and start as needed to include pub stops and photo opportunities.

The tour was a really great thing to do by myself whilst the rest of my family went sea fishing.
It was really easy to download and follow.
I really enjoyed the history and stories about Whitby. I have visited Whitby several times but it was great to have things pointed out that I would have previously not noticed.

This tour was well devised and entertaining. What a wonderful idea to be able to take this tour at our own pace and to stop and pick up again if needed, the information contained was interesting. I will be recommending the tour and using it again in other places.

Is this walk accessible for a mobility scooter?
Written April 12, 2021
A large part of it is but some of it is narrow cobbled streets. No steps but quite a challenge for a mobility scooter.
