love international friends - thank you
Jul 2020
with covid - everyone on the planet gives refunds - airbnb, hotels, airlines. everyone except the lovely, caring downtown abbey folks. i will refrain from saying what I really think of those crooks and focus on the good! I am EXTREMELY impressed with the team at international friends - they kept us updated with the situation and have offered us a credit (with a fee) to use on a future trip. I will absolutely recommend and use international friends on our next visit and hopefully do a bigger and better trip with them. Unfortunately the downtown abbey folks (crooks) will still be on the the itinerary, but maybe I'll dress as a viking and storm the place - who knows

Hassle-Free Rescheduling
When we scheduled our British Isles cruise, we thought that a Highclere Castle tour would be the perfect post-cruise activity. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our cruise is not happening. It was a pleasure to work with the staff at International Friends. They were extremely accommodating, and we are now looking forward to re-creating our vacation during the summer of 2021. We are so appreciative!

Great customer service
We did not get to take our trip due to the virus. I reached out to them about our tour of Highclere castle. They responded quickly and said they were trying to get Highclere to refund our money but at that point in time Highclere was reluctant. They said they would keep trying. I later received an email notifying me that I received my refund. I would definitely use international friends again when we are able to travel.

Amazing Tour
Aug 2019
The Downtown Abbey and Highclere Castle was everything I could hope for. Started the day on the farm where several scenes were shot, then on to Bampton where the church was the point of interest. So many interesting scenes shot here. Then to Highclere. As you walked in, the open credits of the show came to mind. Lots of time to explore the grounds and Castle. The current Lady of the Castle was walking around and would engage with the visitors. Great day.

I had a fantastic day out! This tour is for anyone who is a fan of Downton Abbey. Cogges Farm (Yew Tree Farm) was absolutely charming and Bampton (Downton Village) was so sweet. The highlight was, of course, Highclere Castle. Stunning. What really made this trip great was the team that led it. Amber was one of the best guides I’ve had, very knowledgeable (about Downton Abbey and London and English history) and quite funny! Richard, our driver was also lovely and made sure we were comfortable and safe throughout the day.

Great day at Highclere!
Jul 2019 • Family
This trip was fantastic! It was all I'd hoped it would be and more. The meeting point was easy to find. Our tour guide, Tony, was very knowledgeable, fun, and also a Downton Abbey fan, which added to our enjoyment. There was plenty of time at Highclere for touring, photo opportunities, visiting the beautiful gardens, cafe and gift shop. We got to visit several filming locations as well, such as the Yew Tree farm, Mrs. Crawley's house, and the church where Lady Mary and Matthew were married. All in all a great day!

Highlight of our trip despite some glitches
May 2019
I highly recommend this tour despite some shortcomings. We left from the Cumberland Hotel a half hour late, which meant that we didn't get to stop at the Swan Inn like the other small group did. We went to the village of Bampton, (the village in Downton Abbey - the church, Isobel Crawley's house, Moseley's house, Mrs. Patmore's cottage, etc.

Highclere Castle was wonderful. We ate lunch there, then toured the castle and grounds. I walked where Lord Grantham walks with Isos in the opening credits. I even bought a bottle of Highclere gin.

My only negative is abot our guide. He was charming at times, but outspoken and proud of being politically incorrect. At the village, we had 50 minutes allotted, but our guide spent 35-40 minutes of that making us look at photos he had taken on the Downton Abbey set and telling anecdotes about stars of the show that he knew. He could have saved that for later when there was a screw up with our tickets at Highclere. As a result, we had few minutes to actually see anything. I did a real quick run up the street where Mrs. Patmore's cottage was a took a few photos. I also went inside the church quickly, then got on the bus. The other small group got a guided tour or could go on their own. I felt like we were cheated.

There was an inexcusable screw up with the tickets. The tour company had 53 on one bus and 2 small group buses. When we got to the castle, there were bookings for only 53. We wasted 20 min standing in the cold wind while they sorted it.

Well managed tour - but way overpriced
May 2018 • Couples
As a massive Downton Abbey fan, I was really looking forward to this day. The tour met expectations - we visited Cogges farm (yew tree farm), Bampton village and went on to Highclere castle. Debbie was a very enthusiastic and well informed guide.
But on seeing the actual cost of entry into Highclere (23 pounds) and Cogges farm,(6 pounds) the price we paid seemed really overpriced (190 pounds a person) even taking into account the drive from London through the Cotswolds and other sights. And particularly for a family of 3-4 - one might be better off hiring a car from Oxford or driving down, if able to get a direct booking to enter Highclere. This needs advance planing as many of these agencies buy the limited tickets available in bulk for tours like this.

Good afternoon, Thank you for your feedback - we're really glad to hear you had a good time on this small group tour! I am very sorry and disappointed to read your comments about our pricing, but would like to stress that you were in the company of not just well a informed guide, but a world-class guide, who specialises in Downton Abbey. Yes of course you could have visited the locations as an individual, but you would have missed out on the insider knowledge such as stories about the locations and those starring in the series that you benefited from by joining a group tour. Additionally, we only use exceptionally experienced drivers, and while, yes you could hire a car yourself, you would also forgo the benefit of this; such as itinerary planning between each location, driving in and out of London in rush hour, and navigating your way around the narrow country roads of the Cotswolds! I am very sorry that you feel this tour is overpriced, but we absolutely disagree. This tour is conducted in a small group, and is designed to give a VIP feel and provide an overall experience, rather than just visiting these places - this experience is something that you just wouldn't get if you hired a car and drove yourself to these locations. Kind regards, International Friends

Simply the finest tour we've taken.
Apr 2018 • Couples
First let me say that 5 stars is not enough to properly rate this tour.

My wife (and I suppose I as well) are Downton Abbey fans and thought it would be fun to visit Highclere Castle. So instead of visiting the castle if we happened to visit the UK, we specifically planned a trip to the UK to see Highclere Castle (and then see London).

We met early morning at the appointed place and were picked up by a vehicle similar to a rental car bus but far nicer. Spacious, clean, leather seating and comfortable were words that came to mind. This was a small group tour with a maximum of 15. I believe there were only 10 or so the day we toured making for a very individualized experience.

One big plus of the small group is the vehicle. Large coaches cannot (or are not permitted to) navigate the narrow roads to the small towns and villages where much of the filming took place. We visited Witney where many of the farm scenes were filmed, Swinbrook, Stilton and finally Bampton before heading to Highclere.

It was overwhelming when we first caught sight of the castle and the grounds. Many details and locations from the show were pointed out and the tour inside Highclere was simply fantastic.

Besides the small group and comfortable travel, our tour guide (Debbie) was the reason this tour was so great. She had so much inside information about what we were seeing that included far more than Downton Abbey, Her knowledge and enthusiasm was contagious. I can easily say she provided one of the finest tours we've ever taken.

We returned back to London approx. 10 hours later tired but totally satisfied and glad we chose the "right" tour.
