Absolutely fantastic day with tour guide Amber from Texas on International Friends small group tour to Downton Abbey film locations and Highclere Castle. Our tour was Amber's first Downton tour in 2 years and her passion shows. While in Bampton, the local antique store owner drove to the church to find Amber (the store was closed that day). Lots of hugs and tears followed. That says a lot about a tour guide and her connections to community members. We had no issues getting to the Hard Rock Hotel (5 star bathrooms) and finding the tour van. Our first stop was charming Cogges Manor Farm in Witney, followed by a short detour into Swinbrook with a brief stop at The Swan Inn. Then it was onward to Shilton for another quick stop before arriving at St. Mary's Church of England in Bampton. All fairytale locations in the Cotswolds. We picked up snacks at the local Co-operative grocery store. After about an hour drive, we arrived at Highclere Castle. Look for the new tree sculpture by Simon O'Rourke along the drive up to the castle. The green man face was carved into the remains of a cedar tree planted in 1780. What a breathtaking location. The countryside, history, filming insights, and Amber's enthusiasm and knowledge are brilliant. The day was worth every penny.

Our guide was very good. The locations were spot on. The only negative was that we were booked for the special 'Living in a Castle" with Lord and Lady Carnarvon. Unfortunately, we could only hear Lady Carnarvon occasionally as she did not project into the microphone, and we could not hear Lord Carnarvon at all. It was a bit of a waste of time for us. I would have rather used it to explore the grounds which unfortunately we were not able to do as we ran out of time.

We did not get to take our trip due to the virus. I reached out to them about our tour of Highclere castle. They responded quickly and said they were trying to get Highclere to refund our money but at that point in time Highclere was reluctant. They said they would keep trying. I later received an email notifying me that I received my refund. I would definitely use international friends again when we are able to travel.

This was an incredible experience. Everything was on time and Mike the Guide was super knowledgeable about London, Highclere and the TV show. He was super engaging and kept everything moving along. He made the day. Our coach driver, Alan, made sure our trip was comfortable on on time.

Tour Guide Amber was fabulous. Pick up at Hard Rick Hotel was far away and bus arrived very late.
Great difficulty getting on and off the vehicle for those of us with limited physical ability. Stops at the farm and surrounding area used in filming Downton Abbey were fun. Tour of the castle was beautiful, but “disabled access” grounds were very tough. We were unable to see the Egyptian exhibit, which we paid for and the upper level of the castle. (Which we knew we couldn’t access). The bathrooms, gift shop and dining area were also very hard to navigate.

Amber was awesome!!! Loved, loved loved this tour. We saw the Farm, the Cotswalds, the town/church/Dowager's house, and then went on for 3 hours at Highclere. Amber knew facts, dates and was SO entertaining and helpful. We got time to look around the Farm and the town - and of course - Highclere. It was a real treat to go in - and also see the Egyptian exhibit in the basement.

Tony, our tour guide, was fantastic. He knew all the details about Cogges Manor Farm, Bampton, and Highclere and because of that the tour seemed very personalized. He had a great sense of humor. The small group was the way to go.

When we scheduled our British Isles cruise, we thought that a Highclere Castle tour would be the perfect post-cruise activity. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our cruise is not happening. It was a pleasure to work with the staff at International Friends. They were extremely accommodating, and we are now looking forward to re-creating our vacation during the summer of 2021. We are so appreciative!

First let me say that 5 stars is not enough to properly rate this tour.
My wife (and I suppose I as well) are Downton Abbey fans and thought it would be fun to visit Highclere Castle. So instead of visiting the castle if we happened to visit the UK, we specifically planned a trip to the UK to see Highclere Castle (and then see London).
We met early morning at the appointed place and were picked up by a vehicle similar to a rental car bus but far nicer. Spacious, clean, leather seating and comfortable were words that came to mind. This was a small group tour with a maximum of 15. I believe there were only 10 or so the day we toured making for a very individualized experience.
One big plus of the small group is the vehicle. Large coaches cannot (or are not permitted to) navigate the narrow roads to the small towns and villages where much of the filming took place. We visited Witney where many of the farm scenes were filmed, Swinbrook, Stilton and finally Bampton before heading to Highclere.
It was overwhelming when we first caught sight of the castle and the grounds. Many details and locations from the show were pointed out and the tour inside Highclere was simply fantastic.
Besides the small group and comfortable travel, our tour guide (Debbie) was the reason this tour was so great. She had so much inside information about what we were seeing that included far more than Downton Abbey, Her knowledge and enthusiasm was contagious. I can easily say she provided one of the finest tours we've ever taken.
We returned back to London approx. 10 hours later tired but totally satisfied and glad we chose the "right" tour.

Just got back from the tour. It was a long day, but well worth it. The tour is well organized and punctual, and I really liked the small group aspect (versus a large tour group and bus). Kristina, our tour guide, and Richard, our driver were extremely easy going and accommodating. We visited several filming sites including the Drew’s farm and the village that stands in for Downton village, but the highlight, and the reason we picked the tour, was Highclere Castle. Just spectacular! Thank you Kristina and Richard.

How long is the drive from London to Highclere castle?

I’m not sure of the exact time since a couple of stops were made at the Farm where Anna left her little girl and Bampton to visit the village and church used in so many scenes. I highly recommend this tour. I wish I could go back since I now have more questions after the movies and other articles I’ve read. Enjoy.
