We booked a couple of places on a ‘Call the Midwife’ tour of the Historic Dockyard in Chatham on a midweek day in October. We drove here and the Historic Dockyard has ample (free) car parking for visitors, public busses serve the nearby shopping centre and there is a main line rail station for Chatham though it is over a mile from the dockyard entrance.
Taking the ‘Call the Midwife’ tour also gives the visitor free access for that day to the other attractions in the dockyard and there is a fair bit to see especially if you are interested in history or ships. There are restaurants and snack outlets if you are making a day of it and also a good number of picnic spots if you wish to take your own refreshments. We chose to enjoy a cream tea after our tour.
We chose an early tour at 10:30 as this would give us a chance to get a bite to eat and then explore the dockyard complex afterwards. The tour is advertised as lasting about 90 minutes and this was fairly accurate. Our group comprised nine members and we were led by a costumed tour guide with an (non costumed) assistant shadowing the group seemingly making sure that no one got left behind.
Basically, the tour takes the group around various parts of the dockyard site used for filming and the guide has a collection of large A4 pictures showing scenes from the TV series to demonstrate how they are transformed by the production crew. Our guide seemed to have a very good knowledge of the series and was able to quote various scenes from specific episodes relevant to a specific location in the yard. Having never seen the series on TV myself, these were a little bit lost on me but I was interested in how the filming sets transform the building exteriors to make them appear different.
We have visited the dockyard complex before but the tour took us to two areas not open to the general public and which we have not been to before These were a room in Anchor Wharf with a good selection of costumes and props used in the filming and also the ‘Hemp Store’.
Adherence to the Covid 19 restrictions in place at the time, was met by all members of the tour wearing face masks when indoors and maintaining a social distance between separate households whilst moving around the site. For the interior sections, we were allowed to pass around the room in household groups and chairs were pre-arranged well apart.
Overall, an interesting ‘themed’ visit to the Historic Dockyard, as stated above I have not watched the ‘Call the Midwife’ TV series but nevertheless found the tour interesting from a point of view of TV programme productions producing scenes using a combination of existing buildings, camera ‘trickery’ and application of stage props.

We went on a pre-booked tour for 4 ( teen to 60’s in ages). The dockyard tour was interesting and at allotted time we joined the ‘Call the Midwife’ tour with the lovely Irene as our guide. From the start, she was welcoming, friendly, extremely knowledgeable about both the yard, the film sets and the series of ‘Call the Midwife’. She was, in essence, a brilliant guide, perfect for her role. ( Irene also threw in some gems about other series/films which have been filmed at the site) A thoroughly enjoyable day, topped off with a tasty cream tea ( scone/jam/cream) at the cafe on site. Would thoroughly recommend to all fans of the series ( though my teen has watched it, she couldn’t remember much about it but enjoyed the tour none the less!). Excellent!

I took my daughter on this trip as she is a massive fan and it was a birthday treat. The Dockyards are easy to find and plenty of parking is available. The CTM ticket includes access to the Dockyard too which makes for a lovely day out.
The tour is 90 minutes long and takes in various locations featured in the series to date, such as the hill where Chummy learned to ride a bike and the tenement buildings where we see the midwives visiting their patients etc. There is a little museum with props. We enjoyed it and our tour guide knew her stuff, apart from a couple of character names which she mispronounced, probably in haste. Personally, I felt that the £25 per person fee was a little steep for what we actually saw. There are no sets, so no Nonnatus House or Iris Knight Institute.
The site has play parks, a fantastic cafe with hot pies, a submarine, lifeboats and battleships to explore, plenty to see and a few shops so the combination of the two places makes it better value for money.

We booked & went on the Call the Midwife Tour Tuesday 21st Sept 2021. We found it very disappointing for the money. Not enough content & felt our time would have been better spent going around the dockyards. Would not do that tour again In Hindsight. Also the ticket for the dockyards is £22 & allows purchaser to return for free for 12 months. Yet the Call the Midwife ticket was £25 yet it only includes the one day at the Dockyards? To me that’s poor value in comparison & needs addressing as the prices don’t stack up! Also, it is open until 5pm yet while we were in the Hidden Heroines museum the guy there came & said “you have five minutes left” but it was only 4:35pm? Food was ok although quite pricey for pies. All 4 of us very disappointed with our big day out.

Although our tour guide was lovely, enthusiastic and knowledgeable the actual tour itself was hugely disappointing. It would have been far better and honest to describe this tour as a tour of the docks rather than a Call the Midwife tour. I say this because the tour consisted of our guide holding up a book and showing pictures from past sets, rather than actually viewing anything visible at the docks on the day. When a picture from said book wasn’t available, the words ‘use your imagination seemed to be required. At a cost of £25 per person I would have expected a lot more, especially as the ticket doesn't include a return trip. Where as if you book entry to the docks you can return free to visit. So essentially, this is a really expensive and unfair way to visit the docks under the pretence that you are taking part in a Call the Midwifes tour. It really isn’t worth the money, definitely worth buying the book though. Although, that said I didn’t see it for sale at the docks.

We visited the Historic Dockyard in Chatham for a Call the Midwife Tour and we were not disappointed! Our guide was Midwife Nicola. She was very engaging from the start and held our attention throughout. There were many locations to see and it was fascinating to hear how the set designers create the exact atmosphere required. Our guide was very knowledgeable and happy to answer lots of questions.
We also had plenty of time to look round the rest of the Dockyard and this was included in our entry.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit if you are a Call the Midwife fan!

This tour was a 50th birthday present from my sister, we have had the best time going. Our tour guide was amazing and ao informative! Every member of staff we met at the dockyard, from cafe to shop to tour guide were so so friendly and nothing was to much trouble. If you are a Call the Midwife fan this is an absolute must!

Great fun and the tour guide was brilliant! - Well recommended for avid Call The Midwife fans.

Note that it is a walking tour and lasts around 90 mins. It is mostly outdoors so be prepared if the weather is less favourable however it was lovely when we visited.

We would like to have purchased the guide book used during the tour but were told it was unavailable for sale.

very misleading , thought we would see the set but you dont, the tour guide was very informative about how and where they film certain scenes, the tour guide was was excellent. But there is no atmosphere and a lot of money for what is is, the description of the tour needs to be changed , my party were very disappointed to say the least and i think £28 is way to high a price to pay.

you dont see any of the set , as we are led to believe in the description of the tour.

wouldnt recommend this tour to call the midwife fans

Our lovely guide Irene was brilliant apart from the hiccup at the beginning. We were booked on the 1.00 tour and she said it was cancelled and was 3.00. After checking found out that it was the 3.00 tour that was cancelled but she wasn't told. She went out of her way for us even though it meant she didn't get any lunch as she was going out to get some lunch in her break between tours. It was very interesting and Irene was very funny and such a lovely lady. Well done to Irene!. I must say, the signs to get to the Call the Midwife Experience wasn't very well signposted. We were walking from Chatham Station that was directing us to the Main Gate. When we got to end of footpath saw the sign with an arrow pointing to Historic Dockyard, which was pointing to the road on the right, which we took. When we got to end of the road, it opened up into the dockyard but no signs saying where to go for the entrance. I think there should be some sort of sign saying where to to from all directions as, as we found out on way home, all the signs along the route are for cars!! More signage is needed!! It is a very long walk, so I advise if you are on foot to get a bus, because when you get off the bus its still a long walk to the entrance. The fact that you could see all the dockyard too was a bonus. Watch out if you go on the submarine, the hatches are quite high and wide if you are little. A mask must be worn if you go on the submarine because of the closeness. A good time was had but needed a rest with all the walking because nothing is near to hand.
