- sunflowerl1950 contributionsWorth a visitHad e weekend in Chester hotel was just outside the city but with an easy pleasant walk into the main area not tiring at all plenty of independent shops as well as the usual shops with a variety of bars cafes & restaurants to choose from we went on the 30 minute river trip the commentary was informative without being boring walking round the city walls is easy and you can see the attractions on the walk stopping wherever you fancy well worth the visitWritten September 18, 2022

- sim1300 contributionsA fantastic experianceWe arrived at chester bus station and was greeted by the extremely friendly and helpful Peter. We had been unable to print our tickets but peter was more than happy to help us redeem them and reccomend other things to do, such as the boat ride up the Dee, which we also did. Peter is an excellent representative of your company. As a pro tip, the boat tickets where also cheaper by booking through the bus, which is helpful for those who like to mix up their activities throughout the day. Our little one (1 yr old) loved the open bus tour and giggled her way through. I enjoyed the interesting facts on the tour and it was a lovely sunny day, which also helped! We hoped off and on the bus at different spots, such as town centre and pier. The busses where frequent and great for some of the tourist spots. We happened to get back on the bus after our boat ride and met peter again, who was his normal friendly self. We rode the bus around 1.5 times and finished our tour at chester bus station. The route is Excellent for the park and ride busses that stop right next to the sightseeing bus. The bus also stops at the train station, so handy access for anyone who travels in to Chester by public transport. The tour took around 50min per loop, with around 20-30mins between each bus.Written September 6, 2020

- hcb20170 contributionsGreat tripWe joined the hop on hop off bus on a very, very wet Saturday afternoon. Despite the rain our guide, Peter, was great. He was very informative and made the trip enjoyable. We stopped off to take a trip down the river, again enjoyable. Would highly recommend, good value for money.Written July 30, 2019
- Jenny T0 contributionsGreat day out in ChesterWe all love about boat cruise and it didn’t disappoint. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. We did the joint boat and bus tours and we had a lovely time. We did however wait over 50 minutes for the bus and the tour guide did apologise.Written July 14, 2019
- scarlett65Preston0 contributionsFantastic tour guide and driverWe have used other city sightseeing tours and think this was the best one. We had Michael driving and Michael doing the tour commentary. We got a combined bus and boat ticket which was good value at £12.50. We went round from the station to the old bus station downstairs as the weather was bad and we couldn't hear all of the commentary. After lunch we then walked down to the boats, had a short boat ride then got the bus back round to the new bus station with the same staff still on. The bus took a slightly different route because of the racing. Great tour and really great staff.Written July 14, 2019
- daniellepoppy20140 contributionsBrilliant day in the city before the Zoowe visited chester and stayed overnight before visiting the zoo the next day and was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful a place it is. The park, the river, the shops absolutely stunning place. My daughters loved the park big green fields with a pond full of ducks, a park and a mini train ride. Great church ruins and tops of places to eat, have tea and cakes.Written July 9, 2019
- Preston880 contributionsBus trip around the cityGot a joint ticket with the boat cruise. Nice tour around the city & very informative. Very scenic cityWritten May 21, 2019
- Lindylou1460 contributionsTypical hop on hop off tour!We paid £10 each as concessions for the bus tour (combined it with the half hour boat trip) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn’t very busy, in fact we were the only two on it for half the journey which takes about an hour. We often use these tours when visiting different cities as it helps to see most of the points of interest quickly and then we know what to revisit if we have time. We have had better and more personal commentaries, but this one was ok.Written May 16, 2019

We could've got the bus by the Premier Inn, City Rd where we stayed, but we were a bit confused by the timetable & got on the stop before by the Old Queens Head. I thought perhaps at some point during the year the bus only stopped at certain places? We enjoyed the tour & went full circle before going again & getting off by the river for food at Hickory's, & for a boat trip. You can get a reduced ticket for the bus & boat trip if you prefer to do do both, otherwise there are plenty of concessions available. Although the speaker on the bus was reeeeeally loud, may be it's needed in busier times. The bus driver was very helpful!

We arrived quite late in the afternoon so took the £10 ticket. I wish we had time for the boat trip and had that been an option on the 48 hour ticket we would have gone for it, The driver was very helpful and having the commentary on speakers rather than head phones was a great improvement. Chester is a very interesting and picturesque city and the bus took in all the attractions. A great way to get a feel of the place.

Quite overpriced for what is essentially a bus around town with a pre-recorded commentary playing slightly out of sync and too quiet. Otherwise, a decent way of seeing some of the sights around Chester and learning the history behind everything. The bus driver was a friendly chap too.

Typical red open top bus tour. Timetable depending on road works can be a bit unreliable. At one point they had two busses running back to back.
Plenty of things to see with a recorded commentary which would cut out as the bus detoured away from construction work-in the city centre.

After receiving some wrong information over the phone about a normal bus service we got on this bus as it was the No.100 as expected. The driver didnt know what number it was. He was very irate from the start calling the person who provided our information a liar more than once. He seemed to be negotiating more affordable prices from others getting on. When he told us about what he would offer us I asked if it included a boat trip because we wouldnt want that as we had booked one already. At this he totally flipped and threw us off his bus shooing us away with his hands.
I would never ever use the tour bus service again as with my anxiety I would forever be afraid of finding this person behind the wheel. He was way too angry from the get go. We knew absolutely nothing about these tours and had been told to expect an ordinary bus. He seemed to behave as if we were trying to trip him up and made the experience deeply unpleasant.

If I could give a quarter of a star I would it is absolutely disgusting that the 15:50 bus was over 20 + minutes late. They are quick enough to take your money but not to actually provide the service we waited in the grotty bus station for almost an hour waiting for this bus. Wish we could get a refund and not bother if is outrageous service.

The hop on hop off open top bus ride is perfect to get your bearings. The driver was friendly and the route is easy to find - you don’t need to get on at the start point just hop on at your nearest stop! The view from the top is stunning you get to see a different perspective! Top tips: £26 is quite steep but good value if you hop on and hop off during the day - buy your river trip tickets from the bus driver - they are half price! We did this trip on the first day of our two day stay and we’re able to get our bearings! Staying on all the way around the route is a must and then it’s easy to revisit the places you wanted to see. Including “the rows” for shopping and the Grosvenor museum. Highly recommended

These types of tours are always my go-to in a new place, usually on the first day. They give you a feel for the history & what to follow up on.
It's difficult to be disappointed with a tour in Chester and this hit all the spots.
Two additional points in its favour were: the Traffic in Chester is horrific, possibly the worst I've seen. This may get stuck, but you don't have to worry. Second, you can buy a combined ticket for a 1/2 hour boat trip on the river, which I enjoyed.
One downside: there doesn't seem to be a commentary in other languages.

Visiting for the day, I came out of the railway station and quite literally went straight onto the hop on hop off bus! It’s a very good way to get an overview of the city and to help you decide what to explore in more detail later. The commentary is excellent, with plenty of nice local detail which would be hard to find otherwise, and the buses have been timed to coincide with the half hour river cruises in the summer too, which is a nice touch (you can buy a combination ticket). I didn’t do the river cruise on this occasion.

Can you take dogs on the hop on bus

First time at Chester and was looking to find out how many stops and places of interest on the bus tour
Written October 14, 2019
Hi, Anne,
I mentioned elsewhere that I thought the key stop is the one where you can do the recommended boat trip as well. I seem to remember that there were about 6 or 8 stops, but their website is fab for info. The cathedral stop is nice, where the falcons are... enjoy.
Written October 14, 2019
Does the tour have a stop somewhere where you can walk on the wall?
Written July 20, 2019
Yes, most stops do that, but the river area is perhaps the most popular, as you can take the boat, bus or walls from here...
