        No communication
Sam, can do nothing about the weather and the ferries to Robben Island to run or not. But he should inform his gast at the pickup hotels if the tour changes, is cancelled. Two early wake-up and no tour to Robben island is annoing. He stated to send e-mails to my private account... I booked via a company... and even they did not received anything. @Sam read this review for being important feedback and a serious tip.

        Limited Access Tour
We booked the Townships tour with Robben Island excursion and although the guide and driver were v good, we seemed to have limited access. The District Six Museum was shut and we only got out of the bus in Lang-a to visit the Cultural Centre. After that we were on foot in Langa and visited an old dwelling, the kindergarten and the Shebeen. The healer wasn’t in and we never entered any shops. When we returned to the bus we were informed that the Robben Island ferry wasn’t running that day. We never received a refund for this part of the tour so although it was v interesting seeing Lang-a, this was a very expensive trip with limited access to what we booked and was expecting to see.

Half Day Cultural Tour - that never happened
What’s worse than a bad tour? Did anyone say No Tour? Cause this is exactly what happened to me. I flew to Cape Town on a business trip and had one free afternoon. I had book this tour a couple of days earlier and since the booking tried to reach out to them to get the details of the tour (meeting point, start time) as they did not list them on TripAdvisor (it just said pm tour). They did not reply to any of my emails. On the day of the tour, and just after I landed in the Morning, I opened my phone to see a sms from them informing me that the tour got canceled due to safety concerns! My only free Afternoon got wasted and no time to book anything else! I hate leaving bad reviews, but this one really got on my nerves; they are Unreliable, unresponsive and surely not worth your time or money

        Robben Island, rip off
Sam's tours charged R780 for a "tour" to Robben Island with hotel pickup. This is a total shameful rip off, since in reality all they do is buy you a standard ticket which costs R360, and drop you off at the waterfront where you then go and join the regular ferry and tour with everyone else who pays only R360. Sam's tour has so little ethics that they even allowed 2 tourists to book through them even though they were staying at a hotel right next to the Ferry, so they paid R360 for the actual tour and ferry to the real tour comoany, and R420 to Sam's for an unnecessary pick up from a hotel around the corner from the tour! Sams also did not answer the phone or reuturn our messages.

        Terrific service .........
We booked our trip to Robben Island with Sams prior to heading off to South Africa. As expected, we were picked up at our hotel for our journey to the waterfront but unfortunately the ferry was cancelled shortly before our departure due to choppy seas. Next day we made our way back to the ferry terminal expecting to queue to change our ticket. However, Peter (from Sams) was there waiting for us with our rearranged tickets in hand ! He had sorted everything out for us ! Great Service !

Excellent tour of Robben Island and Cape Town township.
Myself, my husband and our 2 girls (9 years old and 12 years old) went on Sam's cultural tour yesterday and found it a valuable eye opening experience. Starting from our morning pickup by Sam, who was personal and accommodating to our girls, and very knowledgeable about Cape Town and it's history. Our first part of the tour was to Robben Island which has a long and varied history, and wonderful tour guides who provide a wealth of information about the islands past. Our favourite part of the day was the walking township tour. Our guide Shakes was wonderful. Such a genuinely nice guy with a wealth of local knowledge and pride in his community within the township. Shakes asks people on his tour not to give money to the kids as he doesn't want to establish a culture of begging, rather purchasing craft/art items from the community market is encouraged. 50% of the money raised at the market goes back into the community. Toys and sweets can be handed out to the kids thought, so take some along to hand out, or ask Shakes to distribute to the most needy. Thanks Sam and Shakes for a most memorable day and one that all of us won't forget. Highly recommended.

        Langa and Robben Island
Sam was a personable, helpful, guide who added a lot to our stay in Cape Town. I was interested in a visit to Robben Island but and was happy to add on a morning visit to the Townships. The history of the area is important although it is a bit depressing to see how much there is still left to do to improve living conditions. In Langa we had a guide who lives in the township. He told us about the apartments, how people live, how much the rents are. We visited a school, two apartments and tasted some local beer made from sourgum - quite the experience. I imagine the tours change depending on the willingness of residents to share their stories or space. Our Robben Island visit was cancelled due to windy seas but we were offered a chance to reschedule or get a refund. Sam picked me up the next day and dropped me off at the Robben Island ferry. I enjoyed the extra time to get to know a little more about him. The web site clearly states we will be left at the ferry to find out own way home which was not a problem as transportation is quite inexpensive. My only recommendation is to confirm your pick up in the morning and make sure he has your correct phone number In case there is a problem.

        Great Tour
We did the township tour with Sam. Very informative and well worth doing We also booked the Robben Island trip for the afternoon with him but unfortunately the boat was cancelled. However Sam managed to get us on the next mornings boat even though everything was sold out. Really helpful guy and a great service Our hotel was some way out from the centre but he still did the hotel pick up and even dropped us off at table mountain after our Robben Island trip was cancelled Highly recommend this tour company

        Knowledgeable tour of a Township
We were picked up by Sam who gave us a good introduction to the history of the Cape and the development of the townships. When we reached Langa SAM handed over to a colleague who took us on a walking tour of this particular township. It was informative we visited three standards of housing and drank the local brew in a place you would never visit by yourself. 😀 At all times we felt safe and not threatened. Well worth a visit. Brilliant
I thoroughly enjoyed my Township Tour with Sams Cultural Tours. We visited Langa after a an insightful journey there highlighting the relevant social history of Cape Town. The township was insightful, fascinating, interesting and well presented by a local resident. It was a sympathetic and grounding visit which incorporated a range of accommodations, a school, beer house, bakery, medical centre (!) and other key sights. I am so glad that I did this.

        TOWNSHIP TOUR
Booked Township tour for a Sunday. The tour consisted of a history lesson while being driven around with Sam pointing out sights. Then we had a walking tour of Langa township with a stops in a hostel, church, small bar, and doctor hut. There was also a stop at a table selling some souvenirs. Immediately afterward there was more driving and pointing of historical stuff. We were then rushed to Robben Island Ferry where we stood for 40 mins, almost missing the 1 o'clock tour because another tour company booked our tickets and the tickets office wouldnt release the tickets to anyone but the booker. Of course Sam's cultural tours was not at fault for the ticket office snafu. Hopefully they will remember this lesson in future though. Sam is a very personable and informative guide but I wish the tour had been more interesting. The Church visit was nice as I am sure the District 6 museum would be on a weekday. The walking tour was interesting but the stops at doctor and bar could have been more so. Or at very least there could have been something more to the doctor's visit. It was a decent experience but I was left wanting.

Sam is a great guide- gave us interesting information and shared his insights and experiences with us. It was an important visit, seeing the conditions in which people live, understanding more of the history and politics behind this country.

AVOID - Disappointing and not as advertised
We couldn't get tickets for Robben island (reviewed separately) and so decided to try and find a township tour that included it as suggested in lonely planet. Sam's tour was suggested by our hostel. We initially asked whether we could just do the second half of the day to Robben Island and skip the township, saying that we would meet them at Mandela gateway, the ferry port. Sam said this wasn't feasible however as it transpired we returned after the township to drop two people off at our hostel and then went to the pier, so this was a lie. Taking a step back, the driver picked us up on time and then drove to the waterfront to pick the ferry tickets up. He parked in an empty car park telling us he would be 5 minutes, 40 minutes later he returned. The township itself was nice to see but obviously a set route as their were stalls selling 'tourist tack'. As well as walking around the township (Langa), you visit a traditional healer and a church which was good. I would suggest being aware of the surrounding if with children as there are rats running around in places. As previously mentioned we then drove back to our hostel. I explained what Sam had said to the driver and he said that there was no reason we couldn't have done the afternoon. Upon getting back to the ferry terminal the driver bought our tickets. We asked where to meet him afterwards to go back to the hotel but were told that they wouldn't be taking us back, which goes against the tours leaflet and what the hostel had told us, not to mention adding a taxi back to the cost of the day. While the driver bought the tickets we had about 5/10 minutes to run into one of the pricey waterfront cafes to get something for lunch. The ferry ticket showed the price of 350 rand (although I'm sure that they get a discount). Which means we payed 480 rand each (820 total) to sit in a car pack for 40 minute and walk around, very overpriced. Lastly Sam's leaflet states that he is a 'lonely planet guide'. Firstly, we never actually met him but also the lonely planet page has been removed for whatever reason so this again is likely a lie. In summary, don't waste your money and just make sure you book Robben island in advanced.

        Awesome, knowledgeable, interesting, eye-opening!
We used Sam's cultural tours to visit the townships around Cape Town. Of course, townships are far from being the most luxurious places, but you get to see the daily life of most locals. It makes you understand the reality of those people and gets you to understand their way of living. Sam is a very knowledgeable tour guide. Also, if you take the tour un a Sunday (like we did), you can attend a mass in a gospel church in a township. The atmosphere and the passion during the ceremony is incredible. Also, you can visit inside of some houses, visit an hostel, healer and bar (shebeen). We were a small group and we never felt threatened. Must recommand.

Go to a township is something that you can't miss when visiting Cape Town. But let me start from scratch: I was the first to be picked up by the driver and he took advantage of this moment just with me and he was very invasive when asking questions about if I was married, where my boyfriend was, if I don't intend to get married, etc and even looked at my hand to see if I had a ring. After other tourists join us, he changed his behaviour completely. This is called harassment! So women, I don't recommend going alone on this trip at all, I felt very uncomfortable and with hands tight about what should I do at the moment. The least I can do is warning you now. Back to the township experience, during the Walking Tour through Langa, which lasted just over an hour, we could see the houses inside and outside, in addition to having attend a local church session, which has services on Sundays that makes us have a vision of how much Christianity has rooted in African culture. It was said that we would visit a spiritual healer, but that did not happen, as an excuse was said that he was not there, but I believe it was some lack of organization from Sams (some people booked Robben Island too early and I guess we were running out of time for that) because that is part of the Township visit package. After the walking tour we just stopped by some other townships, no getting out of the van and in the end the driver ask for money to "help the schools in Langa" As a conclusion, it's too expensive for what they serve plus the lack of ethics.

Sam picked us up from our Cape Town hotel and was the perfect guide. it wasn't preachy or downbeat and gave us and our kids (8,12 and 14) an insight in to real-life in South Africa. Thoroughly recommend. Tip: we took some cheap toys and sweeties with us to hand out when we met people.

This is a must see in Capetown. The tour is so interesting. I learnt more on this tour than the Robben Island trip. Sam was so knowledgeable about the history, not only of the townships but of all south African politics. There was just 4 of us on the tour in a comfortable 7 seater car.

We were so excited for this trip and it didn’t let us down. Coming from Ireland we had heard what the townships were like in South Africa but absolutely nothing can prepare you for what you see. Cape Town central has the beautiful exclusive waterfront, Ferrari car shops... yet only minutes outside the city, this tour brought us to what felt like a different world. For us, this is a must see for everyone. A local brought us around and it never felt unsafe. The people of the township were welcoming, the children in the preschool and their amazing energy was so uplifting and to see how the whole township community live is beyond fascinating. there’s some great stalls to purchase local handmade crafts so be sure to have some cash with you. We couldn’t recommend the experience more whilst visiting South Africa.

This is the most memorable experience we’ve had in all of South Africa. Immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the local people in a safe environment. The tour guides were knowledgable and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend for an authentic experience of South Africa.

This is better than the usual site seeing tours. We were able to witness the current township and learn the terrible history the people endured. Our guide always made us feel safe. I recommend to bring Rand$ to purchase small items to support the locals.

I believed other reviewers when planning our family's trip to Cape Town when they said you really have to do this. It was important to me that our teen girls see there is much more to Cape Town than just fancy Camps Bay and the Waterfront.

Sam and his team has crafted this experience so well. A living history lesson that opens eyes, explains cultures, challenges, and choices in a way that doesn't exploit the folks living in the townships.

Rather, this is a way to give back. The tour guides are folks who live in the townships. There is a chance to shop and buy souvenirs. Many the same you can find all over Africa. If you want to leave your money behind, why not leave it in this area where it can have a better, positive impact.

After standing in a room in a hostel, in a tin shack where many families live together seeking a better life, I suspect it will be some time before I hear our girls complain a peep about their rooms here at home.

If you are looking for a way to really see many aspects of Cape Town and do it in a respectful way, Sam's Cultural Tours is the way to do it.

One other note--we did this tour in the morning and Robben Island in the afternoon. Made for a big, long day, but I'm glad we did it that way. Sam also saved the day when I found tickets for Robben Island were sold out the afternoon we wanted to go. He came up with tickets and delivered us right to the front of the ferry at the Waterfront after our tour.

      Thank you, Sam!

Our family wanted to see Langa township and learn more about the history. Mpumzi was super knowledgeable and showed us how Black people were displaced from District 6 and brought into these townships. What we saw reminded us of Haiti which is where our family is from. Overall I would recommend this tour. It was definitely eye opening.

I highly recommend doing this tour. Booking was very easy and we were timely picked up at our hotel, in the nicest car I sat in during my stay in Cape Town. Our driver and guide Mpumzi, living in the township for his whole life, taught us a lot about the history of and life in the townships. Emphasis of this tour is education about the townships and definitely not promoting poverty or doing an ‘excursion’.
In the township you get to walk around with another local guide and meet the people living there. Before the tour I expected it to be unsafe, but I totally got the opposite feeling when walking around there. People are very friendly and welcoming and like to tell you about their lives in the township.
Mpunzi and all the people there, thanks so much for this tour! It completely changed my perspective and view of this area and I will recommend it to all people visiting Cape Town.
