About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- travellingcouple2540 contributionsBeautiful scenery and very nice, knowledgeable tour guide - perfect day!We did a brilliant hike all the way from Longji terraces to Dazhai, which was about 12km. The scenery along the way was spectacular - it varied from rice terraces, to mountains, to forest, to villages. The entire walk was really picture-postcard beautiful. The tour guide Peter really made the experience - he was so friendly, really interesting, very helpful and was willing to keep up with our slightly fast pace without any issue! (Note - the 12km took us just over 4 hours to walk, including a lunch break, which the tour guide said was quicker than people normally do it) The agency were also very helpful and accommodating with the booking. This is a must do to anyone visiting the area!Written October 8, 2019
- Sightseer7903380 contributionsRice Terraces and Li River HikingWe asked HikeGuilin to guide us on hikes of the rice terraces from Ping'an to Dazhai and through the karst of the Li River. It was 2 day notice and all their English speaking guides were booked, but our consultant Alex, an experienced guide who had moved on to this different role, agreed to be our leader for two days. His English was perfect and he was very open, sharing his thoughts on the culture of China as well as his knowledge about the minority communities in the area. He seemed to know everyone, and was able to arrange a lunch for us with a Yao family on the spur of the moment. And the hikes were spectacular! We couldn't believe we were there, it was so stunning. Then, when Alex found out that it was my 60th birthday, the company made a reservation for a special dinner at a Guilin restaurant with a beautiful view, and brought a birthday cake over! We feel lucky to have worked with these terrific people at Hike Guilin.Written October 7, 2018
- Alastair B0 contributionsAwesome. Just do it.Sunny was an amazing guide - knowledgeable, friendly, and a true pleasure to be in the company of. This is now my fifth time in China, and I have traveled fairly extensively around. This is by far and away the best tour I have ever done, and I honestly couldn't believe that there were so few people there with us - it was absolutely magical. I'd recommend Hike Guilin to anyone wanting to have a more genuine, authentic (not massive crowd) experience in China. Just do it. You won't regret it.Written August 22, 2018
- EWNL0 contributionsThe closest experience of rice terraces short of working in them! The tour means more to me than I'll ever know, because all my life, I eat rice and never have I seen rice grow in a setting such as this in Guilin, so the value in seeing these rice fields is immense! This tour is the closest experience of rice terraces short of working in them! The tour was very physically challenging. Keep in mind that I am 49 years old. I ran two full marathons. I backpacked in the snow. There are seldom any hand railings along the terraces: while going up or down the terraces, it was best to hold on to the tour guide or another person. Also, I was having food cravings, and the tour guide was into getting as much hiking in, so I didn't have my food cravings fully satisfied. My daughter, who was with me, said I was too picky about my food; so make sure you have a satisfying breakfast the day of the tour, or you bring specific food items to satisfy any food cravings you may have during the tour!Written August 20, 2018
- Carlin C0 contributionsGreat Hiking, great guide!Overall a very good experience, and rates among our top memories from China. The tour operator was very responsive and helpful. The guide was on time, spoke great English, brought plenty of water, and helped us tailor our trip to our circumstances. My wife and I hiked the rice terraces for 5 hours, and we got a great "off the beaten path" look at the area. I would most definitely take this tour again.Written July 29, 2018
- lisa l0 contributionsUnbelievable Hiking memory so farwhile we live in the city with the buildings around just made us want to hug the nature, hike to the mountain and river, so Guilin was definitely the top one for hiking of our destination. we were very happy to find “hikeguilin”, we took two of the most amazing hiking location where located at Rice Terrace and the Li River, we loved the stories and the histories that our professional guide shared with us, and the best food we had was the homemade meal from the local farmer, most delicious food ever; also our guide was very detailed care person which took great care of our safety and enjoyable.Written March 7, 2018
- Luc B0 contributionsNice hiking around GuilinVery nice welcome and perfect organization, even with a last minute decision! We did two one-day tours: one hike around Rice Paddy Terrace and one along the Li River. Our guides speak perfect English and are very flexible to adjust the tour with our expectations.Written May 15, 2016
- biancsr0 contributionsUnforgettable hike along Li River experience, thank you!We thoroughly enjoyed this hiking tour along the Li River - through a peaceful countryside setting, with farmers working on their citrus plantations, the delicate aroma of jasmine flowers in the air, against the otherworldly backdrop of Guilin area's amazing karst peaks. Our guide Peter, a local from the Guilin area, was able to answer all our questions in perfect English, but was thankfully not overly chatty as we have found some other guides to be, instead allowing us to enjoy this unforgettable time together as a family. After several hours hiking, with a few stops along the way to buy fruit from local farmer kids along the way, we were treated to a delicious lunch in the quaint little 600 year old (but recently restored) village of Xingping, again glad to have Peter's expertise in knowing what to order - the eggplant - you MUST try the eggplant!! Thank you Hike Guilin, this has been our family's favourite adventure in China thus far, highly recommend to all! Oh - should also mention, we insisted on there being a child safety seat in the van for our 5 year old, and one was provided (in good, clean condition) and as safety is a priority for us, due to there having been a lot of rain in the days leading up to our hike (fortunately for us, none on the day of our hike), Peter amended the route we were to take to cater to our safety focus. He also provided waters and snacks for us and the van was comfortable, with air-conditioning, and neither Peter nor the driver smoked which we appreciated very much! 10 out of 10 from us!Written April 12, 2016
- Sarah H0 contributionsFabulous service, stunning scenery and fantastic guide. Our guide was Winnie, and she was lovely, helpful and knowledgeable. She was our guide for 4 days whilst we were in the Guilin area. We hiked round the Rice Paddy Terraces, did a day river cruise on the Li River, and relaxed round Guilin. We loved all of it, particular the rice paddies. Really stunning scenery! The itinerary was arranged well, taking in our choices for being active but also having leisure time. Highly recommended.Written November 15, 2015
- Colleen B0 contributionsBeautiful hike along the Li RiverWe (2 adults & 2 kids ages 7 & 9) arranged for a one-day hike along the Li River from Yangdi to XingPing. Our guide Jay met us promptly at our hotel. Jay was an amazing guide - his English is very, very good and he had a lot of information about the Guilin area. For the hike you drive to Yangdi and then take a motorized bamboo raft to the start of the hike. This part was a bit confusing and disorganized, and required our guide to go on a different boat (max of 4 per boat). This was a bit unsettling, but luckily our guide had given our boat driver his cell # and when our driver was lost as to where to drop us off we had him call Jay. The hike itself was really nice, however earlier in the year the river had flooded and parts of the hiking path had been washed away. At times we were not certain how to get around the washed out sections, luckily a nice local lady helped us out. She apparently walks the path every day looking for tourists to help out. We were disappointed that HikeGuilin had not gone out to the hike path before our hike to make sure it was safe, given the flood the earlier month. Not sure what we would have done if we had not met the local lady who helped us navigate it. It was beautiful to walk amongst the fruit trees, by local houses, along the river and see the amazing views. After about 2 hours of hiking we crossed the river on a ferry and continued walking on the other side to XingPing. The walk on this side was along a road. While, you are on a busier road (not too busy) the scenery is still stunning. Once we reached XingPing we had a lovely lunch at a local restaurant. We hiked a total of about 13 km (3hrs), and there wasn't anything difficult about it. Our 7 year old managed totally fine, but did start to lose steam the last 30 minutes (it was really hot and humid the day we went). We totally enjoyed our day, however not sure it is worth the money. The hike itself is great, but you can get the basically the same view from the motorized bamboo raft which travels from Yangdi to XingPing and is WAY cheaper. We love to hike so decided to spend the money, but after doing it would say if you are tight on cash just do the boat trip. I think you could do the hike yourself, but it would be hard if you don't speak any Mandarin. In particular you would need to communicate with the raft guide that you want off to start the hike and also communicate with the ferry driver. Unfortunately, there just aren't a lot of hiking routes in Guilin, I guess given the karst formation. Biking and rafting seem to be a good way to see things.Written July 2, 2015
- fareastjim0 contributionsTerrific ExperienceWe did the three day hike of the rice terraces. We were picked up on the first day at our hotel by our guide Peter and driven to the start of the hike. The first day was a five hour uphill hike from Xinzhai to Jiuwu village. Although it was tough it was a wonderful day of hiking and as it is challenging is for the fit only. Our first nights accommodation was in a farm house and was seriously basic but the welcome was warm as was the food shared around the kitchen fire. This was an an amazing experience and the highlight of our trip to China. The second day of hiking was easy and very short compared to the first day. We hiked from Jiuwu to Xiaozhai in two and half hours and had lunch in Xiaozhai and then hiked for another 45 minutes to the beautiful village of Dazhai were we spent the night in a guest house. As it was December and off season the village was empty of tourists, shops and cafés closed but was lovely to walk around. The final day of hiking was superb. We hiked from Dazhai to Pingan and although it was an easy to moderate four to five hour hike the scenery was wonderful. As it was December the rice in the paddies had been harvested and there was no water in the terraces it was very, very beautiful. We had our Christmas lunch in Pingan overlooking the terraces and promised to return one day.Written December 29, 2014
- Cathy_Archiable0 contributionsIt is amazing. We are so luck! We paid a visit to Guilin at the end of October. We found HikeGuilin from online under the wish of having a hiking tour to the famous rice terrace area. We were told there would not be much to see at that season as the crops (mostly rice) in the paddies would have been harvested by then. After all, we emailed HikeGuilin and got a prompt reply from their travel advisor named Lizzie. Lizzie told us even though Longji (the name of that area) will not be as rich in color as the summer time, it would still be worthy to experience the exotic minority culture and customs. And she also said maybe we could get a surprise when we got there… WE DID GET A BIG SURPRISE!! Guess what? All the terraced rice paddies were filled with water in order to cooperate with the crew of a movie (maybe named “Skip Trace”) starred by Jackie Chan!! Our guide Jay told us to flood all the rice terraces cannot happen until every May. So, what a group of luck people we are! Under the risk of being exaggerated, I have to say, HikeGuilin’s service cannot be better. Their travel advisor’s quick reply, patience and professionalism, their guide’s fluent English, informative local knowledge and pleasant approach to people, all definitely accelerate me to make up my mind to choose HikeGuilin again next time, and also recommend HikeGuilin to all my friends who have a trip plan to Guilin.Written November 11, 2014
- Augwood0 contributionsExcellent getawayI teach English in Guilin and decided to take a hiking tour through the most beautiful parts of the nearby Li river with my colleague and we were far from disappointed with Hike Guilin. Our guide Michael Wang was professional and knowledgable throughout the entire hike from xingping to yangdi, we stood in the exact location that the picture on the back of the 20 RMB bill was taken and also got a great look at the famous 9 horses mountain. The hike was an excellent workout but we felt very safe the entire time, 5/5 money well spent.Written October 7, 2014
- superiorcold0 contributionsStunning Scenery, Unique HikingMany travelers rave of the rice terraces that are North of Guilin and it is the main draw for just about anyone passing through that area. We opted to spend a couple days hiking the area for an up close and personal look at the terraces and surrounding minority villages. The experience was unique and something that I would recommend to anyone wanting a good workout to take in the views. We had lunch in a minority village where the family cooked, prepared and served us one of the best meals we had in China. The hiking was great with many stops to photograph the scenery. There was some challenging areas with steep inclines, but the ground was pretty smooth to walk on so this didn't pose too many challenges. The transportation from Hike Guilin was smooth and well organized. They did provide water for us as well. Our guide was informative when asked. Overall a really great activity to do in Guilin.Written September 18, 2014
- Kristen S0 contributionsBEST EXPERIENCE EVERWe booked one-day ethnic village hiking from HikeGuilin.com a week before we headed to China. And now I have to say that the money we paid for it is absolutely well spent. For people who enjoy hiking as much as we do, this is a must-do on your list if you travel in Guilin. All the breathtaking sceneries aside, we were so excited about seeing all those exotic villages and totally different lifestyles of Zhuang and Yao people. It really helped set up our mind in peace. What made this trip even more perfect was our lovely guide, Michael Wang. There is no doubt that Michael is a professional guide and knows exactly what he is doing. He was fun and explained everything to us patiently. We really liked him. Though we were exhausted after 5 hours walking, we felt happier and healthier than ever before.Written September 13, 2014
