    El Mirador
Stop: 8 hours - Admission included
El Mirador flourished from about the 6th century BCE to the 1st century CE, reaching its height from the 3rd century BCE. Then it experienced a hiatus of construction and perhaps abandonment for generations,[5] followed by re-occupation and further construction in the Late Classic era, and a final abandonment about the end of the 9th century. The civic center of the site covers some 10 square miles (26 km2) with several thousand structures, including monumental architecture from 10 to 72 meters high. One of the key elements for this tremendous rise in human population was the many bajos, seasonal swamps, in the region. Tropical-forest soil contains hardly any nutrients and most of the nutrients present get washed away by rain. Yet the Maya developed a system that was highly productive. In the Mirador basin, the swamps provided the solution. By importing mud from the swamps by the thousands of tonnes, the Maya created mud-covered terraces ready for agriculture. By adding lime to the soil, they elevated the pH, making it suitable for a variety of crops: corn, squash, beans, cacao, cotton and palm. When the ground was depleted of nutrients, adding another layer of mud reinvigorates the fields.[6] There is a number of "triadic" structures (around 35 structures),[7] consisting of large artificial platforms topped with a set of 3 summit pyramids. The most notable of such structures are three huge complexes; one is nicknamed "El Tigre", with height 55 metres (180 ft); the other is called "La Danta" (or Danta) temple. The La Danta temple measures approximately 72 metres (236 ft) tall from the forest floor,[8] and considering its total volume (2,800,000 cubic meters) is one of the largest pyramids in the world.[9] When the large man-made platform that the temple is built upon (some 18,000 square meters) is included in calculations, La Danta is considered by some archeologists to be one of the most massive ancient structures in the world.[10] Also the "Los Monos" complex is very large (48 meters high) although not as well known. Most of the structures were originally faced with cut stone which was then decorated with large stucco masks depicting the deities of Maya mythology. According to Carlos Morales-Aguilar, a Guatemalan archaeologist from Pantheon-Sorbonne University, the city appears to have been planned from its foundation, as extraordinary alignments have been found between the architectural groups and main temples, which were possibly related to solar alignments.[11] The study reflects an importance of urban planning and sacred spaces since the first settlers. Stucco friezes at El Mirador that adorned the banks of a water-collecting system. An additional feature of El Mirador is the quantity and size of causeways, internally linking important architectural compounds, and externally linking the numerous major ancient cities within the Mirador Basin during the latter part of the Middle and Late Preclassic periods. The causeways are commonly referred to as sacbeob (the plural form of sacbe, meaning "white road" in Mayan, from sac "white" and be "road"). These are raised stone causeways raising 2 to 6 meters above the level of the surrounding landscape and measuring from 20 to 50 meters wide. One sacbe links El Mirador to the neighbouring site of Nakbe, approximately 12 km away, while another joined El Mirador to El Tintal, 20 km away. While the city and the sister centers of the Mirador Basin thrived between 300 BCE and the Common Era (CE), apparently, the site was abandoned, as were nearly all other major sites in the area, by about 150 CE. A large wall, which must have been as high as 3 to 8 meters, had been constructed on the entire northern, eastern, and southern portions of the West Group of the city prior to its abandonment in the terminal Preclassic period, suggesting a possible threat that had been perceived by this time.[12] Another aspect that may have led to the downfall of the system, was soil erosion due to deforestation. The Maya were fond of plastering buildings, houses, floors and even ceramics with layers of lime plaster called stucco. This plaster created a nice smooth surface which facilitated painting. With this stucco, the Maya created many astonishingly beautiful artifacts, as well as smooth-walled pyramids and 'paved' roads. But a darker side to this production became evident when consumption started to evolve into conspicuous consumption. The production of lime needs a large amount of wood. Archeologists have calculated that for the production of 1 ton of lime cement, 5 tonnes of limestone and 5 tonnes of wood were needed. Also, dry wood was not suitable due to the large fluctuations in temperature, as a stable temperature was needed to properly burn the limestone. To accomplish this, green wood was needed. So the Maya cut down every available green tree in the area.[6] Excavations in and around the bajos (swamps) revealed the effects of deforestation. When trees vanish, the soil becomes loose and is easily transported by water (e.g. rain). Also, water flows downhill, and the only places in the Basin where it could flow to, were these bajos. The nutrient-rich muck that was so vigorously imported from the bajos was now buried under a 2 to 3-metre thick layer of sterile clay. This cut-off the driving force behind the sustainable agricultural fields. When you cannot replenish your crop fields, more and more harvests start to fail. In the end the failing crop fields led to starvation and collapse of society.[6] In the Late Classic period, c. 700 CE, portions of the site were reoccupied on a more modest scale, with small structures nestled among the ruins of the great preclassic center. The largest structure from this time period is scarcely more than 8 meters high, and many of the preclassic building were plundered for stone materials for construction and lime making. The Late Classic occupants however, were noted scribes and artists.[13] The area of the Mirador Basin is the only known source of the "codex-style ceramics", a particularly fine polychrome ceramic consisting of black line drawings on a cream colored background. The Late Classic occupation was brief, and by about 900 CE, the area was again nearly completely abandoned, and remains so until the present time.

    A must do
My partner and I learned so much from this tour, our guides Nate and Antonio were fun, light hearted and incredibly smart guys. The tour itself covers a great comprehensive history of the ruins with some little extras. Really enjoyed our day and can’t wait to return.

Incredible experience with Nate and Antonio - stop browsing and book this trip!
Our guide was Nathanael and our driver was Antonio. They made our experience incredible. Everything was perfect. From the pickup from our hotel to the visits to Tikal and Jaxha, it was unforgetable. Nate has so much knowledge on the history of theses places and on the nature all around it, we could stop and marvel at every tree, every plant, every insect and every buildings. The included food was great and the hotel they booked for us was also very comfortable. I would not hesisate to recommend this trip to anyone. Those 2 days were the highlight of our 14 day trip to Guatemala.

Our experience with TikalGo was incredible! Even though majority of our group spoke Spanish, our guide repeated everything in English for us so we wouldn’t miss out. He was very knowledgeable about Mayan life in Tikal and all the flora and fauna in the area. Definitely recommend them!!

    Perfect Tour of Tikal!
This was an excellent tour and I'm so glad I decided to book with Tikal Go! Our guide was early and waiting for us in the lobby of our hotel in the morning and escorted us to the bus and driver, both were very friendly & welcoming. The van was super clean, spacious and air conditioned! From the moment our guide greeted us at the hotel to the time he dropped us off he entertained and educated us with everything we could possibly want to know about the area, park, animals, plants, ruins and history. It was very obvious that our guide had a true passion for what he was doing which made even the smallest things seem so incredibly interesting. We saw everything we wanted to see and more on this tour! When we returned to our hotel in the late afternoon we couldn't stop talking about all the amazing things we had learned throughout the day. I would definitely say this tour is well worth the money because not only was it stress free to get to and from the park, but there is just no way you would be able to get all of the wonderful information that the guide is able to provide throughout the day. The only thing I wish I had done differently is to book the sunrise tour - if you can manage the early pick up, I would HIGHLY recommend heading into the park to view what I can only imagine to be the most beautiful sunrise, empty park and cooler temperatures (it get HOT int he afternoon)!

Tikal Go is a top notch tour company
Tikal Go is an excellent agency. Our driver & guide (Abner & Omar) we’re amazing. They picked us up at our hotel in Belize and helped us with Guatemala crossing. We spent several hours in Tikal and then stayed at the jungle lodge (important to note…they do not have air conditioning and electricity is only on during certain hours as it’s by generator…the shower is the temperature of rain water). My husband did the sunrise tour which he enjoyed very much. Important to keep in mind that due to humidity the sunrise was somewhat obscured my mist but with patience it cleared and was magnificent.

    Best Tikal Tour
I went to Tikal for my birthday alone. I was picked up at the airport on time, the tour was 6 hours and had two other tour mates that became friends. Our tour guide Eduardo was extremely knowledgeable and had a very good eye for seeing the animals in the wild. We saw 3 species of Tucan, howler monkeys, Pizotes, wood pecker and wild Turkeys on this tour. We walked a good pace and had time to rest in between. Overall the trip to Tikal was magical. Bring frozen water bottles if you're able to because they sell water bottles at Q10 each there and it can get very hot. It was 103 degrees when I went. If I return I will definately use Tikal Go again.

Don’t sleep on this tour! Such a deal!!
Such an incredible experience! I took the Tikal group tour with Eduardo. I was concerned it would be a large group but it was only 3 people, including myself, so it was perfect. Eduardo set a very manageable pace for everyone and was a complete master at spotting all the animals during our walk — 3 species of toucans, spider monkey families, sleeping howler monkeys, turkeys, pisotes (sic.). I loved learning about Mayan cosmology and the significance of numbers that relate to realms of existence, time, and events. Eduardo’s explanation was very comprehensive and he was an engaging tour guide. Truly, such a wonderful experience made richer by his wealth of information and knowledge. I’m so grateful that I didn’t do this alone. The tour includes some lakeside stops and a lunch that was included in the rate. It was hella sunny and buggy so wear sun lotion and bug spray. There are multiple rest stops along in the park too but water and snacks if you need them (and you will need them) so don’t be too nervous about not being prepared enough.

One day Tikal calll Trip -June 2023
We had a wonderful trip the guide was excellent and full of knowledge we really enjoyed conversing with him. The driver was excellent, very safe and always there on time. These were the definite highlights along with the views that we saw. One negative note we were a little upset with GoTikal that they changed our flight that was scheduled for 530 to fly out of Flores back to Guatemala City to 930 that night and didn’t give us any notice or ask our opinion. We were at airport around 3:15 so plenty of time to board. Needless to say, we had to endure four hours of sitting in the airport in 100° heat sitting and waiting for that last flight because we couldn’t change it again since GoTikal had already done so. That was a little disappointing I assume they did so because it was cheaper for them. Definitely need to think about the customer when you do those things in the future.

    Crater Azul - beautiful!
After visiting Tikal with TikalGo we also scheduled a trip to go to the Crater Azul in Sayaxche. They picked us up at our hotel and were very accomodating to our schedule. again, the tour guide, Ruel, and driver, Antonio, were very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable about the entire area. The crater was amazing and the water was extremely clear and beautiful. They even took some underwater pictures with their GoPro which they shared with us afterward.

On April 3, 2022, we took a helicopter tour to El Mirador with Tikal Go tour company of Flores, Guatemala. To start of, we had an absolutely fantastic experience! El Mirador is so remote and difficult to access that very few people have been there. It takes almost 40 min to get to the site on the helicopter (3 days on foot) from Flores, therefore, when arrive, you find yourself in absolutely pristine mostly untouched environment. To be there is an experience by itself! Our guide Nixon was extremely experienced and knowledgeable about Mayan culture and did a great job showing us around this oldest known ancient city. Since most of it is not fully uncovered and is still sits in the middle of the jungles (unlike its younger cousin Tikal), the aura of the place is extremely strong! Go El Mirador, Tikal Go, thank you for this fantastic experience!

The 30 minutes helicopter ride to remote El Mirador provided a fabulous view. And afterwards we had an exceptionally good tour guide showing us around El Mirador. He was very knowledgeable on Mayan history and architecture and this site in particular with deep involvement in its ongoing excavation projects.
He was great at explaining this in a structured way, providing lots of context and links to other archeological sites.
The remote temples, set in wild jungle scenery are an amazing site to visit, you feel yourself part of an expedition for a few hours but with all the confort of modern travel.
I recommend this trip if you are into archeological sites and want something truly special.

Unfortunately the weather conditions seemed to be unsafe for the Helicopter flight. For safety reasons the operator needed to cancel the tour. The already payed tour fee has been refunded without any problems on the same day.

Exceeded expectations! We have wanted to see El Mirador for a while, and Tikal Go organized an incredible experience. Carlos was amazing to work with to get all our details, everything went smoothly. The helicopter ride was surreal, I can't explain how it felt to see the impenetrable jungle and then land right into El Mirador park. It was a smooth ride. We got to climb La Danta and el Tigre as well as see the frescos and masks under conservation. Our guide Nixon was so knowledgeable and easy to talk to. On top of all of that we stayed 2 nights at Bolontiku resort. Great recommendation by Carlos. It is right on lake Peten and really finessed.

I couldn't recommend this group enough. We did the heli tour of El Mirador earlier this month. The ceiling was too low for the flight so they asked us what we wanted to do. We said how about Tikal today and they agreed. Tikal was great. The next day at no additional charge they picked us up again and said the weather was clear. Our guide to El Mirador was great. All around fantastic experience with a very professional and knowledgeable staff. I couldn't recommend it enough. A very special thanks to Hector!

This was an adventure like no other - flying in by helicopter with the jungle below and then you land in a small clearing and your adventure begins! The guides are very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, fun and the pace of the visit is perfect - not too fast not too slow. The jungle is beautiful - you feel you are really 'getting away from it all' and the wild animals are amazing (watch out for those spider monkeys above!) and the most interesting thing of this site is that it is a working archeological site - you get to see in action what new things are being found. This company does trips all over the 'Mundo Maya' and we are D E F I N I T E L Y coming back and booking only through Tikal Go!
