About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- T9128TFjamesc0 contributionsAnse-Saint-Jean Large Zodiac CruiseI hope this review attaches to the correct company, the tour we took left from Anse-Saint-Jean and the company was Croisieres Fjord & Baleines. The tour was in French and English, and most of the passengers were Francophones, but as an English speaker I felt very included and welcome (and realized I WAY overestimated my ability to understand spoken French). As with several attractions, setting expectations is important. On New England whale watches you expect to see Humpback whales jumping out of the water and you'll generally get close enough to get some good pictures. With the Saguenay Fjord and St. Lawrence it looks like Beluga whales, Minke whales, and harbor seals are the most common sights. When they come up it tends to be pretty quick and with Minke whales you only really see the fin. Also, there are restrictions as to how close boats can get to the whales. Great for the whales, Kudos to Canada for protecting them, a bit of a disadvantage for casual whale watchers like myself. As with many towns on the Fjord's coast, Anse-Saint-Jean offers a pretty sight on its own. One advantage in choosing this company and location is that you cruise on the fjord, something you wouldn't do from Tadoussac. Overall it was a pleasant journey with nice sights of the fjord. The company cited their window covered zodiac as an advantage, which could be true in bad weather. But in good weather the windows tended to obscure the view, so we requested they be opened. After a positive reply, pretty much all the windows were opened. The company cautioned against wet and cold conditions but we went on a warmish (about 70F) late-summer day and didn't need any extra jackets (note, we're from New England). Although seeing the whales and wildlife can be a challenge, overall the trip was highly enjoyable.Written September 8, 2024
- M3574RPandrewc0 contributionsFantastic cruise in the zodiacIt was a really fantastic cruise in the zodiac. It was very moving to see the whales in their natural environment and the guide's expertise and humour made the trip very enjoyable (with continual bilingual translations). Out in the river we saw a group of about 100 seals swimming and feeding together (this alone would have made it worth it for me!), the lighthouse, but unfortunately no large whales due to the fog and strong waves. However, the crew quickly pivoted and took us into the fjord where we saw many Belugas and Minky whales feeding. The lunch box was also very good (sandwich, salad, water, cookies, cheese curds the quintessential Quebec snack :)) -- we picked them up after the cruise ended and then ate them on the rocks to continue the whale watching from the shore. Thank you for a wonderful experience!Written August 26, 2024
- cPhoenicopterus0 contributionsBelugas!Booked a tour on the Grand Fleuve in August 2024. Boarding and ticket buying process seems a bit complicated: You book a ticket online, pay online and then you still have to queue to receive your ticket at a ticket office that is in town, not at the harbour. Don't really see why this is necessary. Apparently this is not the case if you book a trip on a zodiac, but if you book the larger boat you have to collect your tickets in person. If you go on a trip at 09.45 I'd strongly advise you to be at the ticket office by 09.00am. There is a shuttle bus, but we didn't know when or how often it would arrive, so we found that a bit stressful. The boat was very full. The trip started in Tadoussac, then collected more passengers in Baie-Sainte-Catherine. This process took about half an hour before we set off. Otherwise a pleasant trip. We saw belugas, minke whales and humpbacks (one of the latter had a closer look at our boat) - and that's what it is all about! It was very cold (bring warm clothes, you'll need them!), so it was nice there were warm beverages at the cafeteria. Staff was very friendly. There is a commentary in French, followed by a shorter English summary. At first we thought going on the cruise on a cloudy day was not great, but actually we were told by our host that viewing conditions are better if it's cloudy, and we did see quite a few whales. So don't be deterred by clouds and bring a woolly hat and your binoculars!Written August 21, 2024
- Q5714USelizabethr0 contributionsSadly small amount of time in fjord and don't by the lunch boxesLunch boxes are a huge rip off -- do not buy!!! We took the Tadoussac 10:15 Zodiac trip that lasts 2.5 hours. I thought we'd all be hungry on the boat and felt it would be too time consuming to pack lunches, so I pre-ordered the boxed lunches. Boarding starts at 9:45am and which point the staff "suggested" that we eat our lunches either before (at 9:45am -- really???) or after the Zodiac trip but not on it. I pointed out that if I wanted to wait until after to eat, I'd just go to a restaurant. They shrugged and said we could eat on the boat but they wouldn't recommend it. They were right it wouldn't have been practical to eat on the boat (no one else was eating either) -- making me wonder why on earth they offer expensive lunch boxes to go with the Zodiac trips? Massive rip off!! $20 per lunch box!! We ate lunch at a restaurant after the cruise and brought the lunches to our vacation place where we ate some of the contents as snacks over the next few days. The sandwiches were terrible (we tasted them in the morning before getting on the boat because we were curious.. this led to the post-Zodiac restaurant decision) and we threw them away, same for the cookies. We did eat the cheese curds and little bean salads but overall we just felt scammed. Also much of the trip is out on the St Lawerence River and not in the Fjord - our priority was to see the Fjord, the belugas and animals in the Fjord. It seems Croisieres AML is hyper-focused on the St Lawerence River and the 'big whales' which is a pity. They should offer 1-hour trips that are only in the fjord. Also, you cannot control whether you get on a small boat or a big one... we got on a small Zodiac which is good but there is no way to know in advance. And I should add that our guide, Max, was wonderful.Written August 18, 2024
- SarumanNYC0 contributionsVery disappointingI read the reviews and I elected a zodiac tour. Poor decision. I was seated at the back with a very limited view. We briefly saw a minke whale, then spent the rest of the voyage in mist and cold. I went whale watching from the shore. Much better experience - more whales, closer, warmer, cheaper.Written August 4, 2024
- 95fr_d_ricf0 contributionsDon't get fraud. We are 4 friends and we had planned a trip from the city of Quebec to Tadoussac to observe whales. When we arrived at the site, there was a very strong mist and lots of observation boats but because of the mist, it was impossible to observe them. The employees never wanted to give us a whale guarantee in order to observe them on another expedition during the day when the boats were not full. Once back in Quebec City, we called customer service and despite the information not specified and the price very high, no refund possible. Be careful before choosing Croisière AML in Tadoussac. There are other more affordable offers.Written July 15, 2024
- Debbie G0 contributionsExcellent day In VIP lounge with AML whale watching! My husband and I booked the VIP lounge and I saw some negative review on here but we had an amazing time today. Still lots of whales and seals and dolphins and Benoit (Ben) was very good and funny as well. Emilie, our gracious host in the lounge brought us local wines and drinks during the 3 hour tour. Excellent local foods as well!!! The cheeses, sausages, smoked salmon, crackers…l everything was excellent. I have done the regular tour last year but this was amazing and I would recommend it to everyone! Merci beaucoup to all involved in this family run business!!! 🥰Written October 17, 2022
- 110marnies0 contributionsZodiac 10:15 am rideWe signed up for the Zodiac whale watching. We signed up as English speaking as we do not speak French. Captain spoke English at the beginning while doing introductions and what to expect - and by yelling , no microphone like the other boats had. As the tour went on with very few whale sightings - he spoke a big long spiel in French and then spoke English to only the back of the boat. We were at the front of the boat and with no microphone did not have a clue what was being said. Very disappointing for the money spent. Whales were very far away and only two that could tell were whales.Written September 5, 2022
- tammers420 contributionsVIP NOT!If I am paying a premium price to relax in a lounge with drinks and food, I don’t expect to be stuck with other peoples whining and fussing toddlers and their obnoxious parents. They should not be in the VIP space, but elsewhere designated for children. The hospitality was fine, the drinks were well made, but the ‘local food specialties’ were also inedible. While we were asked from the start if anyone had allergies or vegan requests, it would have been simple to tell us all that the main offering was salmon tartare. Since we were not told, the result was huge wasted amounts of food. The other bits in the plastic box were dried out cheese, store bought crackers, and dried apple slices. Fortunately there was a fudge ‘local’ chocolate brownie. I wont complain about the cruise itself as the weather was lovely and the narration was interesting. I would not, however, recommend this trip to any of my friends or family.Written August 29, 2022
- Lrnschmidt0 contributionsDisappointedWe drove seven hours to see whales and spent extra on a hotel room (rest of our trip we used Hilton points) and never saw anything. We were very disappointed given the expense of the travel and the whole cruise cost too.Written August 9, 2022
- LLP10 contributionsWould not recommend the Zodiac for whale watching. The design of the Zodiac boat makes it difficult to see the water or whales. All passengers sit facing inward and most have a direct and close view of the pilot's covered seat. In order to see what you came for, you have to twist in your seat or stand up in the boat. The pilot presented information in French and English with the English version always much briefer, leaving English speakers feeling they were being less informed. The pilot offered almost no spontaneous educational information about the whales or the environment unless prompted by passengers. The cruise takes you to see a waterfall in the fjords with no details shared about the fjords themselves. The company charges an additional fee for parking which seems a bit unnecessary. Wet suits worked well and seemed clean. The pilot seemed like a nice, friendly person.Written July 26, 2022
- S3445DZlanab0 contributionsGreat 2.5 h whale watching tourOn June 30 , 2022 We took a whale watching 2.5 hour tour (2 adults and 2 kids- 7 and 13 y.o.) on a Zodiac expedition boat(capacity 25 adults). The tour was very efficiently organized ( distribution of waterproof clothes , going into boats). Very nice unexpected added bonus was visiting the fjord at the end of the tour. The captain was very knowledgeable, experienced and friendly. The whole family enjoyed it immensely ! Thank you!Written July 4, 2022
- amink0000 contributionsCanceled on usWe were really disappointed to never got to go. We had the tickets booked way ahead of the trip. On the evening before, we received an email advising the that our booking was canceled. There was no explanation and we were not offered any alternative dates. However to be fair we were refunded quickly. It was an important part of our holiday plans in Quebec that we were looking forward to.Written September 25, 2021
- Willie1290 contributionsWet ride but great whales! We were in a largish zodiac, probably 30 people but they outfitted everyone in sturdy rain pants and jacket. We definitely got a lot of water spray over the boat so tighten down the rain gear and make sure your camera or phone is in waterproof bag, everyone was wet. We saw phenomenal humpbacks and some belugas and minke whales. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Would recommend for sure!Written September 15, 2021
- AmyTravels19750 contributionsZodiac cruise… fun and knowledgeable captain + many whale sightings!1. Arrive early. 2. Drive up to pay for parking ($5) and go park. / Be sure to use the restroom! 3. Dress warmly! It’s 10-15 C degrees colder on the water. 4. Pick up your tickets (bring you proof of vaccination!). 5. For the zodiac cruise, line up to collect your pants and jackets to wear over your clothes to keep you dry. 6. Line up to board the boat… they decide if you get on a smaller or larger zodiac — don’t complain! You are advised when buying your tickets! The captain was a hoot during his introduction! He told us everything we needed to know. The ride to the viewing area was choppy, fast, and fun! Within 20 minutes, we were whale watching. We were lucky to have whales right by our boat. Definitely a bucket list item completed! It was a fantastic experience!Written September 7, 2021

We arrived at the ticket office on a blustery cold day. I wasn't sure if the boats would be going out that day because of the wind. It was approx. 10C that day, with winds of 56 km/hr, gusting at 67 km/hr -- and that was on land. I was assured that the boats would be going out and that it was perfectly safe. For starters there was no social distancing happening on board the cruise ship. We were approx 200 folks crammed into a smallish space, all wearing our masks. The ship then stopped at Baie Sainte Catherine to pick up more folks, so all in all we were docked for almost an hour while waiting for folks to board the ship. Naturally since it was so windy and overcast there was just one partial whale sighting and the whales were grey - same colour as the sky and water that day. Plus, the cruise ship and several Zodiac boats used sonar to locate the whales and they just crowded the poor whales. Very unpleasant all around.

Don‘t go there, let‘s start with that. We drove out there for 3 hours and didn’t see any whales at all. During all the time on the water the guide said ohh normally here are whales ohh normally you can see them here and just gave us a lesson about the whales (rly annoying). But afterwards she said during the tour (!) that there haven‘t been whales the last days. We bought the ticket the day before. We had to drive there for 3 hours because it‘s rly out in the nowwhere, then you pay over 100$ per person and you have to stay in a hotel close to that area, so a lot of costs. I don‘t say that they can promise that there are whales but to know that you haven‘t seen any whales in days and still sell tours the day before with „whale guarantee“ and don‘t say a word is almost a scam. And the „whale guarantee“ means that you can come again and not that you definitely see whales but that‘s also not mentioned next to the „whale guarantee“ that‘s mentioned a lot beneath. So first of all why would I do all of that again, so many additional expenses for nothing but second of all (and that‘s the worst part) you have to call a number to book new tickets and you already have to know the date and it‘s attached to your name. So for tourists it‘s almost impossible because they mostly don‘t have a canadian number and can‘t call with other additional expenses. And they can not go again bc normally you have a plan AND they don‘t know any people to which they could give the tickets.
So over all, they can not promise you anything and are not honest when selling tickets AND when I filed my complaint they said oh bad for you but that are our rules but here is a link where you can read the rules.
Just stay away from that company.

Hello,
We're sorry your cruise didn't live up to your expectations,
The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park is one of the best places in the world to observe whales. It's a place where they practice activities essential to their survival, such as feeding. The chances of spotting a whale are therefore very high - over 98%
Please understand that every excursion is different, and although our naturalist guides do everything in their power to offer you the best possible experience, sometimes the whales don't show up. That's why we offer the Whale Guarantee, which allows you to come aboard again and repeat the experience, or take advantage of an experience in Quebec City or Montreal, giving all foreign passengers the chance to enjoy another cruise during their stay in Canada.
We look forward to seeing you on board

I appreciate that this is nature and seeing whales can’t be guaranteed but even when there was a whale (could have been a floating log for all we knew) the zodiac didn’t get very close at all. We booked the zodiac thinking it was quick and agile and would get nearer to the action but don’t bother. If you do go on this trip book the big boat because at least you can move around and have a better vantage point. When you were sat in the zodiac it was very difficult to see over the edge particularly if you were short or a child. You could only stand and actually see if there was something on the opposite side of the boat (not that this happened very often). We were told they don’t use any sonar to detect whales which seems bizarre considering how obviously difficult it proved to find any. Our whale spotter seemed to take us to all the spots where there were no whales. Occasionally she would cry there’s a humpback or there’s a minky at 2 o’clock but by the time we looked we were then told the whale had dove and could be under water for minutes or several hours. All our whales chose the later option. We did spend 10 minutes watching something floating on the surface at a distance and were told this was a sleeping whale and they could do this for hours as well. Which again our whale/floating object appeared to do. In the end I think the crew needed to show us something so we shot down the fjord and saw a few seals. Overall a really poor experience and you are going to have to be very fortunate to see any of the leaping whales portrayed on the promotional material. Save your money and watch a David Attenborough programme.

Wonderful experience! We went on a foggy morning and didn’t expect to see anything . First sighting of a beluga came within 10mins , then so many minke whales , two pods of beluga and a virtual sea of grey seals .
I had read some very negative reviews , so want to share our positive experience . The crew where very welcoming and we found the onboard naturalist to be both informative and entertaining .
Our trip was on Sept 9 2022

Problem with tickets and incomplete service, no help, no refund and the staff does not care and does not try to help.
Shame especially in a country where people are adorable and all our experiences have been fantastic.
They sell you on the internet a cruise pack whale + Bear departure 10:15 for a total of 3 hours.
Once paid they announce that the bear is at 6:30 pm. You are not available on a well-organized roadtrip to finish the performance not 3 hours later but 10 hours later. And they send you to fuck you and say “well no we don’t pay the bear back”
Of course it was nowhere marked at the time of Reservation that the bear’s schedule was so far from the 3 hours announced.
In addition the cruise takes place at a very far distance from the marine animals it is not worth the cost on overloaded boats.
Run away! There are other much better companies a priori.
Very bad experience!

Bonjour,

We booked this cruise by phone on August 4, the Award was $114.99 per person. Obviously they forgot to tell us there was no parking so we add $17 for parking. They also forget to tell us that there is a small 15 minute walk to the boat. Then finally, the Award agreed as indicated on the site is not the same it is 10$ more per person because there are many people. So charged another $25 without notifying us and we're told, eeee the agent got it wrong and here we are charging you for our agent's mistake. What a beautiful company that suffers from an alzheimer whenever it pleases but does not forget to charge you. It's trusting to give them your credit card. We don't take responsibility, but we don't forget to overload.

For the AML cruise we chose the large deck boat (and not the Zodiac) for a better view and we were not disappointed. An unforgettable moment due to the number of mammals that we were able to observe. There were even 4 of them that went under the boat to come up a few meters from us incredible!!!!!!
Three hours of navigation, at least 1 hour on site “hunting with the camera” for mammals.
The lady who provided commentary throughout the cruise was extremely professional in her explanations.
We have already done whale watching cruises in Norway and Iceland but never has the intensity been as strong as on the Saint Lawrence River.

The ferry would not cross the river because of tropical storm Phillipe. So we could not take our cruise. They probably did not go that day but we got no refund.
This cruise is a pretty risky proposition since you have to have a reservation which is paid in full. Apparently if they do not sail, you lose your money.
By the way, when the ferry decided to cancel the trip, the money was refunded automatically while we were still on the dock.

We had an amazing experience on the large ship, great for families with children! Within a few minutes we were in the middle of hundreds of large seals and a pod of beluga whales went by. It is really special that Canada has protected such a large marine area and being in the middle of it all was magical. They can't control nature, I feel bad for people who didn't see whales but I prefer to stay with operators who are careful and don't chase down or harass wildlife. Our captain/narrator was really great and my kids are old enough to thoroughly enjoy the facts & stories.

I cannot believe, how they can set so high prices for such a very poor experience. I felt scammed just after the extremely boring and disappointing “whale watching”. Some people were sleeping or just ordering some food inside the ferry. During the 3 hours we could barely see a beluga and very few small whales from some hundred meters distance. Just unbelievable, that they are selling this pathetic show as an unforgettable experience.

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience. We're sorry that it didn't live up to your expectations.
Please understand that your excursion is only a few hours into the natural habitat of marine mammals in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park. What's more, we must maintain a distance of at least 200 meters from the whales as we observe them in their natural habitat. Protecting them is the watchword on all our excursions.
We look forward to welcoming you on board again.

I know nothing is guaranteed, but is there a better time of day to go whale watching?
