When you go to Quebec, take the Les Promenades Fantomes (The Original Ghost Lantern Walking Tour). Mon-Wed the tours start at 8pm and are offered in French or English. The tour is excellent, our tour guide had obviously researched her character and the relevant information, but we found her a fountain of excellent knowledge about all parts of the city! The tour guide dresses up as ghost from the 17th century and gives a tour of the life and times of the character. We throroughly enjoyed our tour on Wednesday in July. Wish that we had been staying to the weekend because on Thursday-Sunday live street action theatre is combinded with other actors to make an even more dynamic performance, will definitely see that on my next trip!
For more information, go to (---)
You have to reserve a spot before 7pm (I recommend earlier if on the weekend, they said that the weekends fill up fast).

Starting in the upper town behind a church, the Ghost Lantern Walking Tour (Promenades Fantomes) is led in English or French by a ghostly host/hostess in 17th Century costume.

As they guide you past the familiar landmarks of old Québec, your guide recounts tales, mostly of famous crimes and executions that took place there. The guide we had was well-prepared to answer random questions about other buildings we passed by, and the stories overall were well-researched. The guide made sure to stress the difference between documented facts and popular legends.

The tour winds its way down to the lower part of town, through some eerie back streets, and ending up at Place Royale, the spot where Québec was founded. The tour was a relaxed 90 minute stroll, informative and amusing, occasionally macabre, but not over the top. A good intro to the city.

A great way to learn a bit about New France's more gruesome tales of legends, serial killers and capital punishment. Your ghostly guide takes you around the most scenic parts of old quebec, starting at the high point of the town, winding downward so its easy on the feet. We passed another night tour operator who had their group going UP a very steep road, which would be hard work for some people.

For $17 it's a cheap and enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours in the evening exploring - absorbing a bit of history along the way.

My wife and I were fortunate to take the tour with Marie (Valerie Bedard), a ghost of a long dead "King's Daughter". Marie came to New France to become the wife of a settler and after not having any luck in Quebec City, she moved to Three Rivers and married a minor criminal turned royal executioner. They then moved back to Old Quebec City. Marie knows where all the bodies are buried and why - and her lively storytelling (in character) brings them all back to life whole walking along the dark, 400-year-old streets. This 90-minute or so walk in Old Quebec City at night is a wonderful adventure at a reasonable cost ($18 for adults). Ask for Marie (Valerie)!

Having only arrived in Quebec City a few hours before we loved having this on our first night's agenda. We had dinner and then walked over to meet the group. There was no formal meeting area but the guide(s) quickly became very evident.

Identifying themselves and separating the mass into the appropriate groups we met with our english speaking guide for a quick overview, introduction, and business.. after that - we were off!

We walked through the streets as a group learning an interesting side of the history of QC. The guide seemed so into the character I found myself wondering if it wasn't an act.

He was engaging, patient, and entertaining. He kept the entire group interested and involved and taught us fun facts.

While the history of the city's crime may not change, I could definitely see us trying this again if/when we go back. We'd definitely look into a similar tour in other cities we visit with the hopes they live up to this one!

We enrolled for the Friday night Promenades Fantomes and we had a blast! Marie Lariviere dite Rattier (aka Valerie B.) was AWESOME! We laughed, screamed out loud, and felt shivers up and down our spines. Valerie breathed life into Marie Rattier, and was a crackerjack guide: informed, charismatic and a good storyteller. My friends and I were in Quebec for Les Fetes de la Nouvelle France (August 2011) and wanted to see a different aspect of Quebec. Well we did. We walked around for nearly 2.5 hrs (wear GOOD shoes), starting near the Prison (Upper town) and ending in Place Royale (Lower Town). I am from Quebec, and I did not know about this side of our history except for La Corriveau. We are recommending this tour to all our friends/family planning on going to Quebec.

We see that you offer the Legends and Folklore in French. We hope it is available in English by our next visit. And I hope that we are fortunate enough to get Valerie again as our tour guide.

I read so many 5 star reviews about this tour but sadly ours was so terrible we left halfway through it. It seemed to he pure gibberesh as the "actor" babbled about incoherent stories. Weve done many, many tours and this just seemed to be amateurish improv. Very sorry to give a negative review but as the kids say, it is what it is.

We had an engaging two hours with our small tour group. Our guide, Vincent, was funny and knowledgeable. Although my family arrived a few minutes late, it didn’t throw him off his game! The tour was enjoyable and I got it a lot of steps! I would recommend this to friends.
The trip started at the Morrin Centre and ended at Place Royal in the lower city. We took the funicular back to the upper town ($3.50 per person).
Bring a camera that can take good pictures in low light and wear good walking shoes, and be prepared for the uneven cobblestone streets. August nights can get chilly, so i brought a light jacket. Also bring cash to tip your tour guide (most of our group appeared to tip between 15% and 20%). Be prepared to take part in the story, you won’t be disappointed if you have a sense on humour.

My family took this tour and really enjoyed all the interesting stories, we had Arienne as our guide, she is an amazing actress ! Her stories were entertaining and enjoyable. I wouldnt say this is a "tour", you are walking around from place to place, but not seeing any properties or areas where the stories actually happened.

Took our family of 6 on tour, it was entertaining and informative. The cast of performers were funny and made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. We would go again if we return.
