- lisakQ6037NA0 contributionsWonderful History LessonMy husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour of Old Quebec City! Our guide, Helene, was energetic, funny, and wholly knowledgable about the history of Quebec. I honestly don't know how she remembered all the dates she threw out to us! Quite amazing. She pointed out interesting architectural details that helped explain the French/British history. I plan to return and bring my daughters!Written September 19, 2024

- edwardm4810 contributionsA perfect weekend for the history lover and hooferGreat place for a lover of history, who doesn't mind hills. The lovely main park, the Plains of Abraham, is where the British defeated the French during the "French and Indian War" or Seven Years War in the 1750s to give England control of French Canada. Historical markers on the large park give you a clear sense of the battle. Another highlight is the Joan of Arc statue with its gorgeous flowers, and also the military towers. The park has a decent snack bar on its eastern end. A must-see is the military museum on the park's northeast side, and the World War I cannons nearby. This is prelude to the vast Citadel fortress, which protected the city from attack for generations. During summer there is a changing of the British guard, uniformed like the Beefeaters in London. Though walking around the sprawling fort with its fine views requires no wait. To the west is the compact, eminently walkable, but very hilly Old Town. The upper town has the gigantic, grand Chateau (Hotel) Frontenac. Its Place de Armes is known for its buskers. The Terrasse in front of Frontenac has grand views of the St. Lawrence River, and ends in the lovely Jardin des Governeurs near the walkway to the Citadel. Ancient churches and streets abound in Upper Town, even evidence of the large Irish-Canadian population. Little Montmorency Park, the former site of the government, is intriguing. Saint Jean St. has the largest collection of restaurants and dessert places. There are fine fortress walls that protected the city to its west, and lead to the Citadel. Just west of the city walls is the stunning Parliament and statues. The Lower Town has the touristy Rue de Petit Champlain, which does have a fine mural of character types back in the day, and an interesting display of how the street transformed itself from a slum. Head a few blocs north and east to the heart of Lower Town, including the church where the explorer Champlain had his home, and the wonderful, twin popular art galleries, Beauchamp, and an even better mural of historic personalities such as the great explorers Jolliet and Jacques Cartier. You may spot a giant cruise ship at the city dock. Be prepared for a steep but short climb to the Upper Town, a better choice than the funicular, which comes at a price and perhaps a wait. After familiarizing myself with the town for a day, I gave an English-language tour the next day. Visitors will find themselves transported back, time tunnel-like, to 17th-century French Canada, or the France of that era. Tip: It seems everyone active rents the city bikes, but I found a half-day rental of a sturdy hybrid with Velos Roy a better choice. And the bus service is frequent and reliable. Ask for good direction from the airport, however.Written September 16, 2024

More than worthy of its status as a world heritage site, Quebec City has been shaped by layers of history. There's a spectacular vista around every corner and an intriguIng story to go with it. That is why Louise, of Tours Voir Quebec, made such an exceptional guide. Louise's knowledge of First Nations, New France, the British colonial period, and modern Canada is expansive, with lively anecdotes and intriguing biographical asides to leaven the narrative (ask her to explain how a young Captain Nelson's amorous adventure in Quebec nearly changed the course of world history). Louise is a gifted raconteur, witty, generous with personal insights, passionate about her city. She apologized at the end of our 2.5 hour tour for keeping us too long, but I'd have followed her around the whole province to listen to her stories if given the chance. We've enjoyed many walking tours in Europe and across North America. This was one of the two best ever: don't miss this superb opportunity to dive deep into Quebecoise history and culture!

Neil Schumacher was nothing short of spectacular. Our bus tour was faced with a Quebec City marathon that blocked the normal route the bus would take. Not to worry. Neil guided the bus driver on alternate routes, ad libbed throughout the tour and had the entire bus laughing at his comedic commentary. He even guided the bus to his home where he asked his wife (a University professor) to come out and introduce herself. She too had a great sense of humor - playing right along with Neil.
With all the repartee’, Neil had a deep knowledge of Quebec history. None of the obstacles kept us from learning or being entertained.
If Neil is guiding, book the tour!

Our tour guide, Jimmy, provided so much detail as we walked the City. He had lots of interesting stories to share and our small group of 10 was able to hear everything he had to say. We learned so much on this tour and thoroughly enjoyed the walking pace. Quebec City can be challenging for walkers as the elevation undulates.

Thank you for your comments !
We are glad that your tour with Jim was up to your expectations. Our guides always mix in some personal stories and facts during their tour, so each one is unique and personalized.
We keep the groups small so that everyone gets a chance to ask questions and can ear the guide well. It is also easier to adapt to everyone's pace and needs that way !

What a great way to spend a couple of hours to understand the city you are visiting.
This was a very interesting tour with great insights from our guide.
She was great taking us to little areas with no others around.
Being this time of year we were the only ones on the tours so it was a mini private tour which made it more special.
Definitely a must if you are in Quebec for a short stay.

Carole was a wonderful lady who was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about her city. The city is beautiful, rich in history, and we enjoyed walking around. It went a little longer than anticipated, but we didn't mind and she left us on a great street with cute outdoor stops for a bite to eat or a drink.

Our tour guide, Francis, was super knowledgeable and extremely warm and approachable. He shared so many stories about the history and culture of Canada that one might not get from a history book! Loved hearing about the Ursuline nuns and seeing the chapel. Worth every penny!!

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We also consider that all tour guides should be knowledgeable and approachable so you sum up well what are the qualities they need. Guides like Francis will indeed blend all their readings and trainings into a lively presentation that will go way beyond what a casual reader would get from tour books. Thanks again!

We rarely do guided walking tours as they are often too long and overly-detailed, so we prefer to grab a map and explore ourselves. So glad we opted for this tour though! Paul, our guide, was so passionate about his city and made the tour really interesting. The 2 hours flew by but we learned a great deal ... so much so that we are already planning a return trip to Quebec in the Winter ... such a beautiful city!

We try to make our tours interesting and doable for the whole family. The guides will share a bunch of historical facts, personal stories and anecdotes on Quebec City. It is a great way to get your bearrings in the city while still learning about its history, culture and architecture styles.

We enjoyed the very informative and historical walking tour. Our guide Clarisse was terrific. She made it very enjoyable for us. This is not an easy trek. If you are impaired in any way I would not recommend this tour. You need to be able to walk up and down steep roads and walkways and navigate stairs and uneven surfaces. Our tour was close to 4 miles and 3 hours long. Loved it!

If we are driving in
to Quebec City where would we park to take this tour?

All the tours leave from the city centre in front of Hotel Frontenac. I would just walk there, there was public parking at the Hilton - about a 10-15 minute walk for me.
