About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Resort011754611120 contributionsAmazing food and history!Eric was incredibly accommodating, and reached out in advance of the tour. His flexibility and communication helped us through travel/flight delays and make the most of our tour! His knowledge of local history and fun facts about Montreal and Quebec was top notch. Highly recommend!Written February 7, 2025
- E7033AQericc0 contributionsNot a local company, NOT Montrealers ...Sadly we found out quickly this is not a local tour company and they do not work with local and licensed guides.. Guide was very nice but the experience lacked because you could tell there was no connection with the city. This is the Walmart of tour companies. We went local last time we had family visiting and wish we knew this before we payed for this....Written February 5, 2025

The well indicated tour guide (Eric) was very innovative and had an array of amazing food choices all while learning the history of Canada. We loved learning the French and English culture. I’d highly recommend a private tour for any group visiting Montreal.Written January 3, 2025

- Lin_Sg0 contributionsMontreal food tour with EricHad a lovely food tour with Eric. He was very informative and shared the history of poutine, the independence of Canada, and fun facts about Montreal. Gave us some time to shop at a cheese shop, an Italian grocery store and bakery we walked past. Best items of the food tour for me were the poutine and arancini for me. The Italian pizza and donuts to round up the meal were fab as well!Written December 20, 2024

We had a great time on this tour. We were a group of five (two adults and three children ages 10, 12, and 12). Alejandra was a great guide, very informative and made every effort to accommodation dietary needs and preferences. The walking was very doable for our family, and we appreciated getting introduced to many different restaurants. Having been on tours like this previously, I was surprised at the large portion sizes on this tour as well. The variety of foods was great, and each family member had a different favorite stop, which I think speaks highly for the quality and variety of stops. Alejandra went above and beyond and gave us bonus bagels to take back to our AirBNB, which was a great brekkie this AM.
A few pro tips:
1. In the comments section when you book, enter any dietary restrictions, allergies, etc. We had vegetarians in our group, and we didn’t realize to do this in advance. Fortunately, our guide, Alejandra, was able to accommodate us, but it would’ve been easier to let the tour know in advance.
2. If staying at an AirBNB or apartment-hotel, bring a bag for leftovers. There is no way you will eat everything, and some things were so good you’ll want to revisit later.
3. If you have kids, this is a good tour for you. Alejandra was able to accommodate the palates of the kids, including options for more plain/simple fare when needed, such as an option for plain fries/ketchup instead of poutine. The other foods are generally very accessible to kids.
4. Bring Canadian currency cash with you. If you’re getting souvenirs or takeout during/after the tour, many of the stops are cash only.

My husband and I spent three days in the beautiful city of Montreal and were lucky enough to book the Montreal Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours. Our guide, Eric, was a Montreal native, who I believe grew up near where we took our tour.
The restaurants they selected for the tour were fantastic and we left feeling lucky to get to know this eclectic little part of town with our fill of Montreal-style bagels (I'll die on this hill: they are better than NY bagels), gnocchi, cannolis, and of course, poutine. There were some fun surprises along the way and we left feeling comfortably full.
Credit to Eric, he genuinely seemed to elicit feedback at the end as to the portion sizes and our feelings on the foods and stops we made. He added a bit of personal history throughout the walk and made it feel like we were chatting with an old friend.
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to do something in a less-noticed gem of a neighborhood in the city.

We had a fantastic time walking around the streets of Montreal with Donna-Lynn! Not only did we get to try some foods that blew our minds, but Donna-Lynn also taught us more about the history and culture of the neighborhood that we walked through. As an added bonus, the tour group was very friendly and fun companions with whom we could explore the city. Overall, highly recommend to anyone looking to experience Montreal's unique food and culture under the guidance of a local :)

I'm sorry to report that this was one of the more mediocre food tours that I've taken. Our guide, Bea, was extremely enthusiastic and friendly, and started off strong, asking everyone questions so we'd get to know each other.
But the rest of the tour was just ok, and was a big disappointment to many of us on the tour. We did visit a number of shops and restaurants to try a variety of food, and Bea did explain a little of what made that food or spot unique. But she did not seem to have a very deep knowledge of the food we were trying or food in Montreal or Canada generally. For instance, two of the foods we sampled were gnocci and cannelloni, but there was no explanation of why these Italian foods are unique to Montreal or why they're included in the food tour.
I was equally disappointed that our guide did not provide much information during the tour about the city of Montreal or the neighborhood or other things that tourists would want to hear. Most food tours that I've been on serve as a great introduction to the city and the people, and that's what I love about them. This tour provided very, very little of that. Fortunately, there were a number of Canadians (and two people from Montreal) on our tour, so we were able to ask them a bunch of questions and they served as our de facto guides introducing the city to us. I'd recommend that Bea take some other tours of the city to learn what tourists want to hear about and what she could talk about during the (several hours) of the tour when we're not actively eating or talking about food. Instead, she seemed content to just chat with the attendees, and I didn't feel like she had much information to impart - and certainly nothing organized. It's a shame, because she's a very nice person and eager to be friendly.

We appreciate your detailed feedback on your recent Secret Food Tour in Montreal. We'd like to begin by expressing our gratitude for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
We're delighted to hear that you found our guide, Bea, to be extremely enthusiastic and friendly. We take pride in selecting guides who can create a warm and inviting atmosphere for our guests. However, it is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge your disappointment with certain aspects of the tour.
We understand your concern about the depth of knowledge regarding our selections and their unique ties to Montreal. Bea usually receives positive comments for her engagement and narratives during the tour - sharing relevant history and details about the dishes and the neighborhood. I'm saddened that it was a different experience for you. We’ll work closely with her to address this. We hold our guides to high standards, and we want nothing but the best experiences and interactions for our guests.
Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We remain committed to delivering exceptional experiences. If you’d like to discuss this further, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@secrettours.com.

Three friends visiting Montreal for the first time. We enjoy food tours in different cities we have visited and this was no exception. DonnaLyn was our guide and she was very informative with facts about the city as well as the restaurants we visited. It was a good taste of local fare and we were definitely full when we finished the tour! She went the extra mile in ensuring everyone was comfortable and even put two of the group in a taxi to make sure they got where they were going after the tour. She also messaged us after the tour with restaurant and shopping ideas for the rest of our trip. Thank you DonnaLyn!

We experienced a delicious, cheerful and nice food tour. Our guide was Alejandra with J;) She was great. The food was delicious and there were unexpectedly large portions (we expected very small tasting bites). We do not recommend breakfast beforehand and for the thirsty to take a small bottle of water. There was a small bottle of water, but it was not enough for us (but possibly it was also due to sunny weather). But that doesn't change the really great and recommendable experience. We'll be back!

We went on the tour which was led by Raphaelle on 7 November. It was a really interesting and fun afternoon, with Raph proving to be an excellent guide with great local knowledge. She shared some good stories and facts and definitely has created a wonderful rapport with many local cafes and other food outlets. We would recommend this tour to anyone with a spare afternoon, and she takes you to places you wouldn't necessarily find on your own. Top tour!

Our food tour was delicious and Katrine, our tour guide was a delight! From the fresh out of the oven Montreal bagels to the Montreal style poutine there was something for everyone and no one left hungry! We appreciated Katrine's commentaries about the area and its history; she couldn't have been more informative or engaging. We particularly enjoyed our last stop where we had an opportunity to relax and get to know the other tour members. All in all it was a wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon in Montreal and we would recommend it highly.

The poutine was good and the Italian rice balls and pizza were great. The beginning in the market was loud and chaotic making it a bit stressful. The guide did an ok job of keeping the group together despite 9 elderly people with canes and a young couple of fold making for a diverse fitness range.Better gathering of the group at intersections in the market and better broadcasting of tour facts with a well gathered group could have been achieved. Overall the food was a good sample of Montréal, but not the most exciting sampling.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our Montreal Walking Food Tour. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed our selections along the way, and that they showcased a taste of Montreal’s diverse food scene.
The vibrant atmosphere can indeed get lively, which is often part of the bustling charm, but we understand how it may be challenging for some groups. Our guides are trained to keep guests engaged and ensure everyone moves together comfortably, even with a wide range of fitness abilities, as you described. We'll review your suggestions to further improve how we gather the group at key spots and communicate each stop’s highlights, especially in busier settings.
Our Montreal tour is crafted to offer a taste of the city’s beloved culinary staples and hidden gems, and these selections often receive positive feedback for their unique flavors. We’re pleased the food reflected Montreal’s spirit, even if the excitement level fell a bit short of expectations. Your insights help us refine our approach, and we hope to make your next experience with us even more memorable.
Thank you again for joining us in Montreal!

Had a wonderful tour with my buddies. Eric, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and personable — really, a dude I’d want to go out and get a beer with. One of my greatest fears when traveling is hitting mostly tourist-y spots, waiting an hour in line, and overpaying for a derivative experience emulating the local delicacies, but our guide truly knew his stuff; highlighting local, hard-working mom-and-pop shops where the locals really chose to dine, all giving some great fun facts about the city and the stories of all of the restaurants. Not only was the tour a lot of fun but the food was spectacular. Overall one of my favorite tours I’ve been to in any city, and quite the highlight to my trip.

Not sure i understand.
Do we all drive in the same bus or something? Or we need to take our own car?
Also, is the food included in the price of the tour?
And if not, we are simply taken to good restaurants and we choose
what we wanna eat out of the entire menu as usual?
how does that work?
thanks
Written July 8, 2022
Hi! The way the tour works is that you meet your guide and walk around a section of Montreal. The ticket price includes tastings, not whole meals of different foods. The tastings are a nice serving and can be filling, but this is not a meal! You can buy drinks and any other food you desire, but you will have to pay for it. The tour is so much fun! You learn so much about the city and get to taste some amazing foods!

How much walking is there between stops? My sister and I are visiting and we are both 70+ And do we have the option to sit at the places we sample food?
Written August 24, 2019
The 1st stop is s bakery and you can sit. The stops are pretty short though. The next stop is standing while eating gnocchi and just next door to that is the bagel place which is also standing. Then a short walk around the block for poutine which is s sit down restaurant. You then walk a few doors down to a crepe restaurant and again sit down. The final stop after that was about a block to 2 blocks away where you enjoy a beer. Hope this helps. We had a couple who were in their 70’s and they seemed to manage well. Enjoy
