- JojoElf0 contributionsFantastic afternoon spent whale and orca watchingWe spent a fantastic 3 hours whale watching with our friendly and very knowledgable guide Scotty. We were lucky enough to see groups of orca several times, humpbacks and Stellar sea lions. Scotty also used a hydrophone so that we could hear the orca communicating with each other below the water while we were watching them above it which was amazing! Highly recommend going on a Prince of Whales tour.Written September 11, 2024
- Roving404273914940 contributionsAmazing wildlife spotting Zodiac tripThank you Scotty my wife Sue and I had an amazing trip, we loved the zodiac, it was great fun. Scotty was brilliant, so very knowledgeable, he even found us a Minke whale, because he smelled it in the air, yes really!. We saw Humpbacks, Orca, Seals, Bald Eagle and of course the distant "Stinky Minke", all in all a fabulous three hours or so, with an amazing guide, thank you Scotty.Written September 10, 2024
- 707mariaelisap0 contributionsFantastic Tour!! Once in a lifetime experienceWe took the morning tour with James and it was an all around amazing experience!! James brought a lot of energy and knowledge to the tour and was very respectful around all wildlife! I had looked forward to this for a long time and the experience exceeded all my expectations. We saw breaching Humpback Whales and two pods of Orca and many more wonderful animals, all with the breathtaking background of Vancouver Island. Thank you James for a once in a lifetime experience!Written September 9, 2024
- Kamgator0 contributionsJames found the whalesExceeded all expectations. Humpbacks, Orcas, porpoises, sea lions, seals and even some shy sea otters! James the guide led an information filled tour with more whale sightings than we could have hoped for. Our 29th anniversary and my wife checked off a bucket list item of having porpoises swim with our boat. VERY cool day!Written September 9, 2024
- 9kerryr0 contributionsA memorable day not to be forgotten!Memorable! Amazing! I never dreamed that I would be so close to such beautiful Marine life. Within minutes there were orcas, swiftly followed by the most incredible pod of 100 plus dolphins surrounding us on all sides. What a thrill that was! Then sealions, humpback, seals and more orcas. When the hydrophone was dropped into the water the sound of the orcas talking is something so special I shall never ever forget. Thank you Scotty for you knowledge and enthusiasm of the beautiful waters and sealife within. You're a great guide. Keep up the fab job!!Written September 7, 2024

- joannafW9443XO0 contributionsCan’t miss, don’t miss this tourI’ll start out with our guide, Scottie. He’s fantastic. He knows details about the whales we saw, down to the dialect of each whale family’s calls. Our tour started out with a bang, right out of the harbor as we were greeted by the resident Orcas. We spent over an hour there viewing a plethora of Orcas and Humpbacks. That said, we heard we were super lucky to see so many so quickly, so be patient as that likely won’t be everyone’s immediate experience. Scottie pointed us to cues which prepared us for surfacing whales so we did not miss a thing! We went to the Straights and saw more whales, dolphins and porpoises and learned about their social habits and behaviors. It was truly fascinating because of the passion Scottie has for the wildlife. Mind you, he sees these creatures every day yet he was as excited as we all were every time we spotted something. We saw 25 Orcas and countless Humpbacks and the water was calm, all unusual circumstances. I say this to temper expectations yet if you only see one whale, it will be worth it. FYI, you will need a camera with zoom capability if you want to get decent photos as proper viewing needs to occur from a distance. Use your eyes instead and commit your experience to memory!Written September 7, 2024
- Y7336KLsamanthal0 contributionsAmazing!100% worth every penny. We were surrounded by hunpback whales at one point and were able to take so many amazing photos and our guide Scotty was very knowledgeable about the wildlife as well as the geography.Written September 7, 2024
- Marnie720 contributionsBeautiful day on the water watching whalesWhat a fantastic afternoon. It was a beautiful day for an afternoon on the water. Telegraph Cove is a way to go, but I was nearby in Port Hardy and it was well worth the travel. We saw numerous animals- dolphins, porpoises, bald eagle, humpbacks feeding and orca. Our captain, James was very knowledgeable and engaging, it was very obvious he loved his job. Definitely worth the trip!!Written September 4, 2024

Out of 3 hours we spent atleast 90% of the time surrounded by Humpbacks, Orcas, dolphins, porpoises! As a bonus spotted a bald eagle, otter and sea lions. It was a nice sunny calm day, while at Telegraph Cove, we decided at the last minute to do this whale watching trip.
Health & safety were addressed first; both Covid-19 precautions & safety on the water. The boat was at half capacity, we were outside & everyone wore masks at all times.
Our naturalist, Sharon, explained how & where they look for whales.
Captain Chris, did a great job getting us to the whales & respecting a safe distance.
We saw lots of whales; both resident & transient orcas, more humpbacks than we could count, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, and lots of different birds.
Sharon explained the difference between the 2 groups of orcas.
With the catalogue of whales, she was able to identify the orcas we were watching. and tell us about their family units.
She answered our questions & was as excited as we were at seeing all the wildlife.
It was both educational and wildly entertaining!
A wonderful experience.

We’d never really been interested in taking a whale watching excursion before and since we’ve been back we haven’t stopped raving about the experience! Friends recommended if we were to whale watch that we MUST do it in Telegraph Cove, and they weren’t wrong!
We had hoped to get out on one of the zodiacs however as the weather was pretty rainy and windy we ended up on the larger boat- which was just perfect for the conditions. We saw porpoises, stellar sealions, humpback whales and so many orcas. Every direction you looked there were whales. The captain Chris did an excellent job maneuvering the boat to ensure everyone had equal viewing opportunities.
Sharon was our top deck marine naturalist and was absolutely fantastic! Her knowledge and passion for what she does made it all that much more worthwhile! The boats lower capacity and company’s COVID policies made it feel very safe.
We’ll be sure to come back and take another tour. Sharon, wishing you and your crew bountiful days filled with all kinds of wonderful marine creatures. Thanks for such an awesome adventure!

The crew were very organized and made the boarding process so simple and streamlined just asking for your name and then asking if you wanted a personal photo taken holding their lifesaving ring before getting on board the boat. The Captain knew exactly where to go to see the whales and at times shut down the engine and let us listen to the dolphins on the special underwater microphone . She kept the respectful distance away from the whales and never tried to get too close. We were out on the water for over 3 hours and saw loads of humpback whales, schools of playful dolphins, seals resting on some rocks, and some bald eagles. The crew members were very keen on imparting their wealth of marine knowledge and also pleasant and cheerful making us feel welcome. Coffee and hot chocolate were provided if you wanted any. Our favourite thing was that they emailed us an album of photos they took themselves enabling us to just relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about snapping photos on our cell phones as we don't have an advanced camera. The photos were great and we can share them with our friends and family. I love dolphins so seeing them in large numbers like this was the highlight of the boat trip itself for me. We were in the Ocean Majestic boat (not the Zodiac) which was comfortable and dry.

Our guides Sharon and Rebecca were very well informed and passionate about their work. They were amazing in their abilities to spot, photograph, present information and answer questions-at times almost simultaneously .The teamwork was completed by the excellent captain. COVID procedures were followed.
The boat was very comfortable but since a lot of the seats are open to the elements make sure you dress warmly and wear good rain gear if there is a chance of rain.
This is a beautiful part of the world worth seeing on it's own. Sea life highlights for us included an acrobatic display by a humpback, a sea otter, Minke and Fin whales and a colony of Stellar sea lions.
Our friends had such a good time that they booked for a second day!

We were on the larger Ocean Magestic (not the Zodiac) and it was a good call. The ship was crewed entirely by friendly, competent, knowledgeable women (the captain actually parallel parked the ship when we came back in. I alone gave her a standing ovation). We saw California sealions basking and swimming, several humpback whales spewing, arching and displaying their tails (and our crew knew their names and how to identify them) but overall, my favorite part was the synchronized swimming of acrobatic and friendly dolphins alongside the boat. Several came close to the boat, curious and playful. The weather was beautiful, hot beverages were complimentary (and delicious) and the amount of people onboard was perfect. I wish I could give more stars.

A dream came true! We've had a really stunning half-day trip with many sights, an enthusiastic female crew (Rebecca, Vanessa), sharing it's knowledege, especially about the different orca pods and their socializing. The great captain (Roman) was very skillfully, kept prescribed distances at all, switched off the engine upon sighting to reduce disruptions.I can absolutely recommend this company.
A bitter aftertaste remained:
There was a private boat at this day (at Sept3rd-9 o' clock tour), with 2 persons, following us the whole way, showing an unresponsible behaviour by arriving later, several times they cut the orcas way off, like encircling the group of orcas, so they changed their swimming direction immediately.
If whale watching becomes a hunt, I would recommend to reduce tours and increase distances. As it's known, that the Southern Residents are a really endangered species and their propagation depends on undisturbed ingestion in this nutritious chinook area.
Please keep that in mind!

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! We are glad there are people like you out there to spread the word about the whales' protection, amidst a darker history of humans' effect on whales around the world. We hope you enjoyed observing the orca behaviour in their natural habitat, despite having a private boat nearby who clearly does not respect the whale watching flag and the regulations it upholds.
From Telegraph Cove you will (most likely) be viewing Northern Residents. This species is thankfully not endangered, whereas the Southern Residents are still endangered and we have high hopes for their growing population. The local federal and provincial government, as well as in the US, have restricted viewing of this species for their protection and well-being. For this reason, in our South Island locations when we observe orcas it is only the Transient species commonly known as Bigg's killer whales.
Thanks again for joining us and for your passion; we hope to sail with you again whale soon :)

We were lucky enough to see approx 10 humpback whales and a spectacular show put on by the sea lions. Our guide was enthusiastic and friendly. The fog broke and the scenery was amazing. Telegraph Cove is very quaint and we had a wonderful meal there as well.

We took the 1:30pm 1/2-day Prince of Whales Whale Watching Tour out of Telegraph Cove, July 24, 2024. We saw Orcas Whales, Humpback Whales (which were close to extinction in BC until 1997), Bald Eagles, and Porpoises. It was FANTASTIC and well-worth the $169 + tax per person, because you will also be educated as well if you wish! There wasn’t a question that our “Upper Deck Tour Guide, Abby,” could not answer! We learned a ton about Killer Whales (or Orcas), Humpback Whales, and Porpoises! Captain Roman was an excellent “boat driver,” and we evidenced this when we were going through a narrow channel and he immediately had to turn around when there was a Humpback Whale “hanging-out” in the middle of the channel (something the crew said that they had never seen before). I have been on many different types of boats in my life, and his skill, given the heavy current, the size of the channel and our boat, stood-out to me. However, he also had a “spotter” in Edie at that time… something else I noticed was that either Abby or Edie was in the “Bridge” with Captain Roman all the time the boat was moving….. so this was a safe charter! My only regret is that I didn’t think to take more cash to “tip” if the service was good. We tip between 15% to 20% in BC for meals etcetera for great service and most dinners in a restaurant don’t last 3 hours like this tour did and once again, the knowledge and service of all 3 crew members, Abby, Edie and Roman was stellar! Thank-you to Prince of Whales Whale Watching!!!

We’re thrilled to hear about your amazing experience on the Prince of Whales Whale Watching Tour! Witnessing orcas, humpback whales, bald eagles, and porpoises must have been truly remarkable.
We are so happy to hear that our knowledgeable Naturalist, Abby, ensured that you received valuable insights about killer whales (orcas), humpback whales, and porpoises. Captain Roman’s skillful navigation, especially when encountering a humpback whale unexpectedly, stood out. Having a spotter like Edie on the bridge ensured a safe charter.
Thank you for sharing your adventure with us, and we hope to welcome you back soon for more unforgettable moments on the water!

The staff from booking and check in, to the boat crew was outstanding, there focus on Safety and Service was worth noting and Captain Val and her crew were all first class. Abby our guide was second to none and her two colleagues were also excellent at sharing wildlife information and local knowledge. We saw 4 majestic Orca’s, entertaining Otter rafts and two humpbacks with one extremely playful whale who put on a show. Thank you Prince of Whales and Val and your crew!

Is it zodiac transportation ? How many people on the boat ?
Written July 6, 2019
Hi Flyer!
When I was there last month, they had both but I went out twice and that was on the larger boat both times. The latter can carry about 60 but there were only about 25 of us on board when I was there. I'm not sure of their criteria for using the zodiac - I love both for different reasons!
