We did the 8:30 AM tour from Granville Island, on one of the custom build catamarans. Paid parking is available right in front, or at the Anderson Street Parking Lot nearby. On the weekend it's free until 11 AM, and only a minimal hourly fare after that.

The tour itself took us 4 hours, and we were lucky to have spotted a Grey whale right close to the UBC campus - about 45 min after we departed. Following that about an hour and a half in, we saw multiple pods of orcas. Lastly we saw some seals, sea lions and bald eagles on a private island. The trip back took us about an hour.

Stephen, Rebecca, Wilma and Sandy were fantastic! They were an all-star crew taking care of our safety, enthusiastically explaining about the wildlife (peppered with stories and anecdotes), manning the drinks station and also photographing! Their energy and attitude made up for the terrible weather (complimentary hot drinks helped too).

The restrooms were clean and well maintained as well

Would certainly recommend Prince of Whales' Whale Watching to anyone that hasn't done it before.

We (me, wife kids 7 & 9)went on this tour on the morning of Saturday 23 August. It was a gorgeous day, but you really do need to wrap up warm if you want to sit out in the deck, as the wind makes it cold. Even though it was a hot day, I wore trousers, a hoodie and a wind proof coat on the coat.

We had a European lady who was our guide and she was great, bring so knowledgable about everything we saw. We managed to see loads of harbour porpoises, sea lions, seals and golden eagles. However we didn’t see any whales (but the trip was great even without this)! With this tour, you have a listing guarantee that you can keep going on the trip for a small cost (fuel surcharge), so we booked on the very next day.

The second trip was in the afternoon and our guide was Tobyn who was equally knowledgable as the lady on the first trip. We saw seals once again and this time we saw a hump back whale. We were able to watch it for around 30 mins which was great and exactly what we were hoping for.

The crewe take loads of photos and email them to your afterwards, so you don’t need to worry about trying to capture a good shot.

The trip takes between 4-5 hours and according to my GPS watch you cover between 75-100 miles. There is some beautiful scenery and I would highly recommend going if your thinking about it!

An absolutely fantastic experience. The crew looked after us so well. You get hot drinks, Coffee, tea and Hot Chocolate, as many as you like, all the way through the trip included in the price. Snacks on board are only 3 dollars each. Take water if it's a hot day. We were advised to wear long trousers, closed shoes & take a jumper and jacket. not because it was necessarily cold but very windy when the boat is moving along fast and did use them. There is indoor & sheltered covering if it is cold but we had a very warm day and applied sunscreen as when the boat is still it can get very hot.
We spotted Whales/Orcas that were absolute beautiful & Seals. The whole trip was just worth every penny. They also have a photographer on board who sends you all the photos via email after the trip, this is also included in the price.

Thank you so much to John, Roman, Steve, Tobin and Petra for a wonderful 4 hour trip highly reccomend to our English Friends.

Lovingwc, Thank you very much for your review! We're glad to hear that you had a wonderful time on your tour! Our catamarans have a fully covered cabin with seats and tables on the main deck that's perfect for any passenger wanting to escape the cold. Even when temperatures are hot, the wind on the water can make it feel up to ten degrees cooler Celsius than what it actually is, so we definitely recommend to bring some warm clothing with you! Thank you again for your lovely review, and we hope to see you again in the future!

This activity was ok. We were lucky enough for it to not have rained, but I feel a bit disappointed with what we saw. We drove out for about 2 hours with nothing in site. After “seeing” armless seals, the captain turned around to head in another direction (for another hour) because they heard from another boat that there were whales south of wherever we were. We saw two whales’ dorsal fins and tails and watched them for half an hour, but no water from the blowhole and they didn’t surface. I guess I expected too much out of the tour? I’m just a little shocked that this is one of the most popular tours in Vancouver.
The cruise ship was comfortable and they had an insulated lounge below deck to warm up. They offered complimentary coffee and tea I believe. There were snacks offered for $3 each which goes to a whale foundation.
Overall, I wouldn’t book again or recommend just because I feel like you could spend 5-6 hours doing something better.

t_xiao22, Thank you so much for your review! We apologize for your disappointment in the tour, we unfortunately cannot control whether whales breach or not as they are wild animals. We are glad you enjoyed the ship; we do what we can to make the experience a comfortable one for our guests. Our year-round whale sighting success rate is ~95% (averaged across all of our adventures) with chances being even higher during summer months, so we hope you book with us again and that your next tour can be a 5 star experience!

We came to Vancouver specifically for whale watching and we were not disappointed! We decided to do the 3-5 hour catamaran tour so that we had space to move around on a longer trip and it was definitely a much more comfortable experience. Within the first hour we saw a pod of 5 transient orcas who were just finishing a hunt and were very active! It was amazing and more than I would've expected. I understand that it's not always easy to spot whales, let alone orcas, on every whale watching trip so I was extremely happy and the crew called it an "above average day." The naturalists and everyone working on the boat were super knowledgeable. The captain was also very mindful to keep a safe distance from the whales and warned other boats to do the same which I appreciated. I loved that photos were included in the price so we had access to a few nicer quality images than the shaky iPhone videos I took. They emailed the photos out within hours of the trip. Towards the end we saw a ton of seals and a few bald eagles. Would definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking for a quality whale watching tour! Just be mindful of the time of year you go for what wildlife you may or may not see. We went July 20, 2022.

Nsuch25, Thanks so much for the five stars! We are so glad to hear that you had a comfortable ride aboard our lovely catamaran. Wow, that's amazing that you got to see some Orcas after a hunt, they are so playful and active with such interesting personalities! We couldn't do what we do without the whales of course, and we are passionately dedicated to protecting them and their natural habitat. We hope to inspire others to protect them as well. The provided photo package allows you to dedicate your time on the water to just sit back, relax, and enjoy! Thanks again for joining us, we hope to see you again some day.

Being taken out to the middle of the ocean in search of whales, was an experience that was truly unforgettable. The onboard crew made the whole experience quite enjoyable by explaining some of the traits of whales we were to see, along with creating a fun and exciting environment. The captain and crew worked as one to locate, and get as close as possible to the whales, adding fun jokes and an environment of rush and excitement. Once completed, the tour was able to capture the sunset on the way back, adding that much to the overall experience.

An OUTSTANDING experience!!! Captain John got us to all the prime spots where we saw even more than we hoped, close enough to hear the whales breathing, yet far enough to keep them safe. Wilma, Luke and Petra shared so much fascinating information and their obvious passion for these incredible creatures. First O Sandy was quick to photograph and identify the whales and the fact that those photos were shared with us meant we could marvel at the animals in real time without looking through a camera. Over all, I can’t say enough good about the Prince of Whales. Everyone from the young woman I booked with, the young man who greeted us at the office to the dedicated crew should be commended!!!! Thank you for making our whole vacation!!!!

Highly recommend this tour. Leaving from Granville Island is very convenient and it’s a great day out on the water. Even if you don’t see as many whales as you are hoping for, the scenery is worth it. And, if you don’t see any whales at all, you can rebook another trip for free!

The entire team were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Wilma, and the other naturalists were very enthusiastic and engaging. They really made an effort to educate everyone about what we were going to see, and what we were actually witnessing, as well as answering questions. They actually went around the boat, sitting with groups and individuals.

What you should know in advance:
1. The tours are not allowed to approach the whales, and must stay at least 200m away. This means that the whales are really far off in the distance. Phone cameras aren’t really going to give you the best pictures, luckily, Prince of Whales provides you with professional photos of the wildlife spotted on your trip. If you have a camera with a long lens, go for it. Otherwise, just enjoy the experience and don’t worry about taking photos.

2. You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks. Do so. It’s a long trip, and there are bathrooms and tables on board. Granville Island has lots of places to pick up food, if you’ve forgotten. There is coffee, tea and hot chocolate available onboard but the snacks were not available on my trip.

3. It does get cold and very windy if you’re sitting outside. Hold on to your hats! However, the boat comes to a stop, slow cruise once whales are spotted.

4. It takes about an hour and a half before you reach the first whale spotting location. Enjoy the views.

5. They had phone chargers onboard, if needed.

6. Bring and use lots of sunscreen. It’s intense on the water and you can get a really bad sunburn. Take advantage of the covered areas onboard.

Overall, it’s well worthwhile! Have fun!

Amazing trip to see the humpback whales and other marine wildlife. Crew and guides were fantastic and organisation was perfect. Easy to get to the boat on Granville Island for the tour. Naturalist guides were very knowledgeable about the wildlife (Jill gave us some great information). Our official photographer on the boat did a great job and our photo package (included in the price) was with us within an hour of our return, great service. Thanks to the whole crew for a great trip. We just loved this. You never know what you are going to see, and today we were very lucky. We saw four Orcas, 2 humpbacks and a pod of 5 Orcas in three sightings over the 5 hour trip. Loved Wilma (Whale-ma!) and Tobin and their narration of what we were seeing and information about whales. The Orcas were in view for about 15 minutes which was great, we saw the humpback dive and flip the tail fluke, and the pod swam straight towards us! Extra bonus was that Tobin took photos throughout with a very high powered zoom lens and we were sent these straight away, so we could see close up what we had seen from the boat. Just a perfect day!
