My family and I went on this tour in June of 2022. The tour includes stops at two tea shops, a fishmonger, a bakery, a BBQ deli, and includes a dim sum lunch. If you look at the other food tours in Vancouver, you'll see that "A Wok Around Chinatown" is the best value in terms of food and time. And it's not just food, you'll learn about the Chinese-Canadian immigrant experience, Chinese culture and food culture, and the history of Chinatown. Be sure to ask lots of questions of not just the tour guide, but also of the places at which you'll stop. In particular, the tea shops are very expert in tea. Although nominally scheduled to run for 3.5 hours, by the time the host ended the tour, he had spent 5 hours (!) with us. Also be sure to challenge your stomach by trying something you haven't tried before, at the dim sum restaurant.

Things I learned on this tour:
They sell horse-shoe crabs for eating (never seen that at a Chinese Restaurant before)
Jasmine tea is flavored primarily by steaming the buds with the tea.
Chinese tea is steeped at a lower temperature (as low as 65 C, depending on the tea type), so as to not introduce the tannins into the beverage; English tea is brewed with boiling water, hence the need to add sugar and cream, to counteract the tannin.
How chicken feet are prepared for dim sum.

Bob makes an effort to learn about the people on his tour, so that he can tailor the information to be relevant. We highly recommend this tour.

Why does Bob only have excellent reviews? Because he is the born tour guide, an expert in culinary and cultural matters, empathetic, engaging and bringing people together! We did this tour as a family in a nicely mixed group. Bob made sure that we got to know each other and our cultural backgrounds before taking off to a wonderful tour of Chinatown. We got to taste the most delicious food in places we would never even notice when walking around on our own. At the same time we learned a lot about the Chinese community in Canada and Vancouver, their history and traditions. We also visited the impressive Chinatown Storytelling Centre and even returned after the tour to spend more time there.
Be prepared for a feast of Dim Sum as the grand finale of this tour. What a treat!!
We have done foodie tours around the world but this one is by far the best. We can only recommend this tour, your visit to Vancouver will not be complete without it!

My husband and I really enjoyed this tour. Bob was an excellent tour guide. This is much more than a food tour. So much history and fascinating information regarding many different aspects of Chinese history in Vancouver. Highly recommend this tour if you enjoy history of any sort. It is a great value as well, we were fed more than enough with a great variety, but were also able to visit the gardens, the storytelling museum and treated to a special tea time at the end.

Bob's passion for all things Chinatown was infectious as he led ten of us on a delightful tour. It was jam-packed -- tea masters and fishmongers, the famous classical garden, intriguing fruit and vegetables, a dim sum feast, historical and architectural insights, and timely samplings of baking and BBQ pork. We discovered much about Chinese culture and ate too well. Would highly recommend the tour to visitors and British Columbians alike.

If you are interested in culture, history and/or food, you should not miss this tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Bob is passionate about his culture and city, and makes the tour enjoyable and very informative. At the end of the tour, we enjoyed a delicious Dim Sum meal. I can't say enough positive things about this tour--other than "don't miss it".

First of all, thank you Bob for being just a great human being. You took the time to make a connection with every person on our tour and by the time we shared our meal of dim sum I felt we were among friends. You have great awareness of your surroundings and the people you are leading which makes you an incredible guide! We could have visited Chinatown on our own dozens of times and not experienced it with such depth and delight.

If you are serious about experiencing Vancouver while having a whole lot of fun, A Wok Around Chinatown is essential.

This tour shines as an absolute highlight of our visit to Vancouver BC. We learned so much not only about Chinatown and Vancouver, but the history of the Chinese experience in Canada. The program is a rich blend of historical perspective, education on Chinese culture, personal storytelling, and, of course, tasting wonderful foods along the way. We loved how our guide (and tour company owner) Bob Sung seemed to know everyone and everyone seemed to know him. There was a very friendly and welcoming vibe. We were joined on our tour by a gentleman named Kenson who will be a future guide working with Bob. It was a true pleasure spending several hours with both gentlemen. We will definitely recommend this to all our friends visiting Vancouver BC.

A sad, but necessary, side note is that Vancouver BC’s Chinatown is struggling with the same issues we see in other US coastal cities. Drug addiction, mental health, etc. We felt completely safe and frankly are used to it because we live in a West Coast city. But if you’re not used to seeing that, it might be a bit of a shock. You just have to put on your “urban experience” hat, have empathy for those who are suffering, respect the importance of tourism to the sustained well-being of Chinatown’s businesses & residents, and appreciate the beauty of Chinatown as revealed by Bob.

This tour left me with a deep appreciation of the contributions Chinese immigrants have made to North America. Their determination, hard work, their cuisine and their art could all be witnessed on this tour. Bob, our guide, delivers a fair and balanced view of the challenges Chinatown faces and passionately shares its culinary and artistic gifts. Don’t hesitate to do this tour!!

This was one of Bob's first tours after the pandemic. Bob was on top of his game and very excited to show us his town. He did a fantastic job of conveying the meaning of the various aspects of the Sun Yet Sen gardens. Great dim sum for lunch. I even tried the chicken feet. Great explanations of the history of the Asian communities in the BC area.

Bob was such a nice man. Warm and so welcoming from the get go and put us right at ease. His knowledge of Chinatown and the history that dates back was so interesting. He knew Chinese families personally from years ago and their stories …. We would stop at various building and he’d tell us all about the people who used to live there and their affect on the city. People actually stopped him on the street today asking when his next tour was! He happily handed them his card and carried on with us. My mom, as always, had tons of questions and he answered every one!! :-). The time flew by and it was time we’ll spent. So much cultural and history knowledge and the food! We need to go back for one of those apple tarts!!
