The gondala is quite long which makes you feel like you are getting your money's worth. There is a "museum" type place at the top with three different restaurants but it seemed quite pricey for a fairly uninteresting menu. There is also a hike to a weather station that is very fun and probably took about ~30 min round trip (including lots and lots of time for pictures). Make sure to dress cute that day because the picture opportunities at the top are incredible. The museum thing at the top itself is very child level which would make it super family friendly but just ended up being boring for me.

As a group of 10 with ages from 12-65 we booked the combo gondola ride and Northern Lights buffet. I recommend booking in advance if you plan to eat up top (which has an amazing view), as we noticed the restaurant was fully booked and seating was only given to those with reservations. Overall it was a nice trip and view, but only about half of our group felt that they would choose to do this again; the price didn't seem worth the value to everyone. In fairness, we had a few in the group that had aversions to heights so that didn't help the experience.

We booked a Sky Experience Package (lunch at Sky Bistro including gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain) online a few days before our visit.
The booking system worked perfectly and we arrived with our printed tickets in hand.
Once inside the building, we were greeted by a friendly ticket operator who said we could go up now (we were a bit early) or poke around in the gift shop first (which we did).
No line ups as with Covid-19 they stagger the ride times and only allow your party of up to 4 to ride together. The gondola operator assisted us with the doors and off we went to enjoy the about 7 minute ride up the mountain. The gondola was clean (they sanitize between riders) and it was nice to have the little windows open - the glass was also spotless for great picture taking as well. The gondola travels at a nice speed, not bumpy or scary at all.
The ride experience on the way home was just as wonderful and they even have someone there when you board at the top to take a "professional photo" of you, which you can purchase when you arrive at the bottom ($20).
Very fun and enjoyable experience that is well worth the money!

Beware the NO CANCELLATION policy. I decided to pay the outrageous fee of $96Cdn for two seniors (local residents). I bought the tickets online one day before the trip. This is encouraged on their website to avoid long line ups. On the day of the trip it was raining and very windy so I decided to cancel the trip. When I asked for a refund the answer was NO REFUND! I lost $96 to this total rip off operation.

Travelling during COVID-19 has changed a lot, but the Banff gondola has made accessing this attraction very easy. You can easily book your tickets and “flight times” online and avoid printed tickets or lining up to buy them onsite. At the lower terminal you are required to wear face masks, but everything is nicely streamlined and clearly marked. There is access to bathrooms inside the lower terminal building once you are within 30 minutes of your “flight time.” You are required to wear your face mask as you load the gondola car, and the employees wear them as well. The gondola cars are sanitized before you board them. One positive of COVID-19 is that they don’t fully pack the 4-person gondola cars and even if you are a couple (like we were) they let you have your own car which is something I don’t think they normally do. We removed our masks inside the car since it was just the two of us, but when you exit the car at the upper terminal you must wear a mask. Same goes for all of the upper terminal, unless you’re eating at the café. The café was wonderful, tasty, and the service was very quick. The hike up to the cosmic ray station was very easy and short. The views from both the upper terminal and cosmic ray station are astounding. There isn’t a better place to get panoramic views of Banff townsite and the Bow valley.

Hi keishareynolds,
Thank you so much for your 5 star review it means so much to us.
Thank you for such positive feedback in relation to the new protocols we have in place for COVID-19. It has been a big change and we are so happy you felt safe on your visit to the Banff Gondola. You are right, we no longer put groups in a gondola together unless they are travelling together.
Thanks again for such positive feedback and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Thanks,
Matt

We weren't going to do this attraction initially but made a last minute decision to do it. The cost was our biggest hesitation, but after experiencing it we thought it was definitely worth it! The gondola ride itself was really pretty and peaceful and the views from the observation deck were absolutely insane. Even though the temperature was below zero, we spent a while soaking in the amazing views. There was a small starbucks inside and a great gift shop too! We will definitely be back! If you go when the mountains are covered in snow, we recommend staying until sunset. We headed down a little early and missed the pink glow on the mountains.

Hi angela_demarco95,
We are so glad you decided to visit us. The views really are amazing from the top and we are so happy you got to experience them.
The temperature up top can be quite a bit colder from the bottom so we always suggest layering up. Sunset is an amazing time to be at the top of the mountain if you get a clear day. We would highly suggest coming around that time for your next visit.
Thank you for your review and we look forward to seeing you again.

I haven't been up the gondola for nearly 20 years. We had a recent trip to Banff and my wife suggested we go again. I looked up the tickets online and was shocked at the price. A friend who lives in Banff agreed it was expensive but he said it was worth it.
Tickets are priced based on when you book and the estimated demand. So Uber pricing. Tickets start at $55 each for adults from what I saw, maybe they are available cheaper if you book farther out from your visit but I never saw anything less than $55. We paid slightly more but we booked a couple hours before our time.
We booked for 7 of us and selected our departure and return times even though I was unsure of how long it would actually take. When I exchanged our online booking confirmation for the actual tickets the lady at the counter told us they weren't that busy and that the times on our tickets would be flexible which was nice to know.
There was no line-up and we went up the gondola. The views on the way up are beautiful. Once we got to the top it was easy to follow the signage and find our way around. Three of us headed out on the boardwalk to the weather station while the older ones stayed behind in the main building. It was a fair distance to the end but an easy walk. The boardwalk is nice and wide with lots of room to stop without impeding traffic and there are some picture boards to read to add to the experience. And the views of course. You can see the entire area from the boardwalk and when you get to the end and make sure you touch the back board at the weather station to show you're done (that's my rule) After the walk out we realized the hardest part of the walk is the last few sets of stairs back up the the main building. So if you can walk out 5 minutes you've committed to the hardest part already.
There are lots of displays in the building and a movie and gift shop. The movie was good but the quality of the movie (the display, not the contents) were not nearly as good as they could have been. There were also a lot of seats blocked off due to Covid so our group had to split up into pairs and we took up most of the theater.
We spent a total of 2 hours here and never had lunch so I would base your estimated time at 1.5 hours if you don't feel the need or effort to walk to the end of the boardwalk and up to 3+ hours if you plan to have lunch.
It was a great experience and I guess what we paid for what we experienced it was worth it.

Modern gondola , well kept , quick ride up and amazing views of Banff and all the peaks around .
There is a restaurant and a bar ( same location ) .
All was great if not breathtaking .
A musician outside was paying the harmonica and was incredibly talented . Could not ask for anything more moving .

Hi JohnnyBravo55,
Thank you for reviewing the Banff Gondola on Tripadvisor. By the sounds of it you were able to take full advantage of our facilities while you explored the Upper Terminal. I’m super excited that you were able to dine at Sky Bistro as it is ranked the #1 restaurant in Banff and could enjoy some live music on our rooftop patio! Our Program Manager has worked extremely hard to organize each performance so I will definitely pass on your positive feedback. Once again, thank you for visiting the Banff Gondola and we look forward to hosting you again.

During our stay in Canada we spent a lot of time on Gondolas but this was definitely well worth the visit. We pre-booked well in advance and went early in the morning, I would strongly recommend this.
Although it wasn't excessively busy when we were there, clearly they are geared up to handle huge volumes of visitors. We were staying at the Rimrock resort which is within a 5 minute walk but during busy times cars were parked way down the mountainside for the gondola and hot springs.
Views from the mountain top are incredible and expansive walkways help give a sense of space and isolation.

Visited on a Thursday afternoon in November. Admission prices were a bit expensive (~$65 per person), but it was worth it when we got to the top. Starbucks at the bottom of the Gondola was open, so we grabbed a coffee and hopped in to get to the top. The gondola ride was around 8-10 minutes long, was very smooth/relaxing and the view was incredible. Once you arrive at the top there is a gift shop & restaurant (although the restaurant was closed due to Covid). The boardwalk at the top takes around 20 minutes to walk all the way to the summit of the mountain, and the view from there is priceless. Overall we spent around 2.5-3 hours from our arrival to when we left - so I'd say it was definitely worth it.

When I reading the description, it says only 1 hour, 40 minutes at the top and something about being assigned a Gondola for the return trip. What if I want to longer? One hour, 40 minutes does not seem like enough time.

No one on TripAdvisor will be able to answer that question for you since the rules are constantly in flux.
Currently the province of Alberta has lifted most of it's restrictions BUT individual companies may still require mask use (even though it's not demanded by the province).
Someone could respond today to your question, and their answer may no longer be valid the next day or week.
Best bet is to contact the operator themselves and keep an eye on their website for any updates (they have a page specifically for Safety and Covid measures).
