    An adventure with challenges
The rain was a challenge and the track was not in great shape. Suspect that Doc will fix it up when the sun shines. However, it was a great adventure and the timber trail lodge is fantastic. Two of the low gears on one of the hire bikes weren't working. Battery charger not there on arrival. So, room for improvement !!!

    Professional and safe
The staff were welcoming, professional and the vans were comfortable and built for the terrain. our drivers Rob and Lambert gave us some great insights on local culture politics and stories. We felt safe and cared for and their humour was the icing on the cake. Would thoroughly recommend their services

Great experience, but think carefully about which bike to pick.
Fantastic service and a great experience. I hired a Trek Roscoe (hard tail) and found it was not the best choice for this trail. The large and heavy wheel and tire combination made it sluggish in the turns and slow to accelerate. They also reduced the effectiveness of the brakes. Considering the long climbs and that this trail is advertised as accessible to most people, I highly recommend the e-bike option as this seemed to me to be a better bike for the trail. The only feedback I would give to the place is to provide some proper changing and shower facilities at the end of the trail as getting off your bike covered in mud and having nowhere to clean up before getting in the car is not a good end to a great trip.

    September Experience.
From planning and booking to execution the Timber Trail Shuttle & Bike Hire team were first class. Shame they couldn't arrange better weather however we won't hold that against them. Good gear, good team, well done.

Timber trail staff had everything covered- transport, bikes, awesome food and all with a smile 🙂 They packed us lunch for day2 biking too, which was very nice. The lodge is very cozy and beautiful. I will recommend them to friends anytime👍

    Timber trail mountain bike ride
These guys were amazing! Great to get the local knowledge from Rob and Dave on both shuttle rides. Their communication prior to the trip was great. We had our own bikes and they took great care transferring them. I was amazed at their big selection of hire bikes.

    Great time
We didn't need to take the shuttle as we got a ride to starting point . We hired two bikes...brand new but must say the seats were terrible...needed gel seats. But did get informed they had run out as new seats didn't arrive so a day out. Also I have small hands and found the brakes where a stretch. Bikes needed to be personal fitted for you. Otherwise fantastic

    Great day’s biking
Excellent day’s biking - Vaughan took my sister and I up to the Lodge where we started biking. I hired a Trek Roscoe mountain bike which was great for the job. Vaughan was personable and informative on the shuttle ride to the start. Recommended!

    Fabulous
Excellent service, could not fault the whole thing. The bikes were fantastic and the trail quite bumpy in parts, bit of a work out on the wrists and shoulders. It's not like otago trail all lovely and even, definitely want to have had some time in the saddle experiencing mountain biking if you are in the older age group I reckon. The first part is thru the forest and has tree roots in the trail and a bit muddy on occasion. Definitely electric bikes make it easy to get up to the top (15km uphill to start) Day 2 quiet a lot of downhill over more rugged track in parts. Overall a superb ride and service by all we encountered. Amazing and highly recommend

    Great
Timber Trail shuttles and Bike Hire were great, easy to deal with, very accommodating with a great relaxed kiwi manner. I would recommend for those who do not do much riding that they hire an e bike to enjoy the 2 day ride as the trails are more taxing than riding in a park.

    Hiker tries Biker
I'm a hiker, and this was my first experience doing a bike trail. Excellent weather both days ! From start to finish the communication was brilliant ! MIKE gave a fantastic commentary as he took our bikes to the start. ROB was so friendly and more than willing to take photos at the start line and on return VAUGHN was very kind and helpful collecting my bike and carrying my bags off the bus. As for everything in between?? Grab a bike, pay the money and give this fantastic, adrenalin driven ride a go. It covers all sorts of turain, all kinds of history, and bush line. You are challenged if you are fearful but in the end ??? YOU DID IT !!! and you'll be pleased you did ! WHAT A MAGIFICANT PART OF BEAUTIFUL NZ. THIS bike adventure and its staff were fantastic !!! Highly recommended !!! ***** 5 stars ***** YOUR TURN NOW 😉

The friendliness and encouragement from the staff was so appreciated. They are all extremely hospitable, informed and super helpful. Very smiley people. Extremely well organised, so knowledgeable, regarding local history and important, not to be missed, local sightseeing spots. I highly recommend this ride. It is tougher than you would expect and at the last minute I changed to an ebike, which I highly recommend. Rather than hating the whole experience I loved it!!. First time ever on an ebike and for this particular trip it really paid off. Book ahead, as I was lucky to get the last ebike available, when I changed from a standard bike. Staying at the lodge was the icing on the cake. To "come home to" warm, comfy, accomodation with healthy nutritious food was an unexpected added bonus. The bar is open too. The whole experience from start to finish could not be faulted. Safe place to lock your vehicle, shuttled to the start, replacement bikes if there are any issues, the cohesion between the two companies makes it feel like they operate as one. Do it with the Timbertrail Lodge and bike hire. Its a great experience.

Timber Trail Shuttle and Bike Hire made our two-day MTB trip along the trail simple and seamless. The logistics of doing the trail and ending up back at your car with all your gear can be a bit daunting, but these guys just sorted everything out and nothing seemed a fuss. We definitely recommend getting in touch with the friendly shuttle staff and getting their help to plan how you tackle the Timber Trail.

Timber Trail Shuttles provided a great service, timely, clean and friendly. The communication was great the whole way through and we would use this service again. We were really pleased with how seamless and easy the process was. We needed to wear masks, due to level 2 restrictions, in the vans and were given a run down on the Covid procedures, requirements and what to expect.

Great ride, was gorgeous weather, briskly cold but very beautiful! Track was in great condition and there was a lot to see. We were on ebikes and this worked well for us, still challenging but very achievable. I would recommend this widely and encourage people to take their time and enjoy the different scenery and history along the way.

Thanks for the review Renae and yes it was very brisk but beautiful stunning days. We are so pleased you stopped to take in the history of the trail as it is pretty amazing. If you get a chance to come back over summer make sure you make the climb to the top of Mount Pureora to see the views of the central north island from Kinlock to Lake Taupo and over to Mt Taranaki, its pretty spectacular. Kind regards Victoria and the team

Timber Trail Shuttle and Bike Hire.

A group of 12 of us has just completed an outstanding weekend ‘mountain biking’ The Timber Trail from the Pureora trail back to the Timber Trail Lodge and then on day 2 from the Timber Trail Lodge to Ongarue.

We cannot rave more about how professional the Timber Trail Shuttle and Bike Hire company was. They gleaned, before the event, all the relevant information on those who were hiring bikes, so that on our arrival at their Ongarue base, all the bikes were well labelled and ready for a test ride and clear and precise instructions.
From their base they then transported us all with our luggage and bikes to The Timber Trail Lodge where we were staying for two nights.
Rob & Vaugn made what could have seemed like long trips, into very quick and enjoyable journeys, with their hilarious stories and sharing of history on the region.
They picked us up the next morning to take us and the bikes to the start of the Pureora trail. Both trips were an event in themselves. 😊
On completing this amazing adventure the Timber Trail Shuttle and Bike hire company staff were there to greet us at our cars, our labelled luggage waiting for us and their efficient tracking system ensured everyone had returned safely.

Highly recommend this company with their attention to detail and professionalism.

just make sure your bike is on the same shuttle to pureora as you are.
we were asked to drop our bikes early so they could load these. It turned out we were not on the same shuttle as our bikes (we were the only ones that had bikes on a different shuttle). We arrived at pureora at 9.30am on our shuttle.
everyone on our shuttle left on their bikes. It was cold and damp. We were told our bikes would be there shortly. They finally arrived at 10.15am (45 minutes later). It was a cold wet day and we were waiting around. A special thank you mention to the owners mother who stayed with us and waited.

Sadly, im a very organised person so i found it incredibly frustrating, that it suited the shuttle company to load our bike early and on a shuttle that went to the lodge to pick up those people. but it definitely was a down point in our trip.

other than that everything else ran smoothly. Pre arranging Staying in our camper the night before was really appreciated. The transfer of luggage was easy and efficient. And we appreciated the bike wash down and shower at the end.

The specially designed bike trailers held the bikes very secure and the bikes very safe and transported well. The shuttles were comfortable. I would definitely use this company again but i would insist my bike was on same trailer as the shuttle i was on so we got to end destination at the same time, We felt rushed after waiting around for 45 mins

Hi Diane, sorry to hear of your wait, this is very unusual as all six shuttles are usually only 15 minutes apart at the most meeting at the start of the trail for a 9.30am drop off. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay at our base on the farm it is a lovely farm and hill outlook. We would love to have you back again soon. Victoria

We used Timber Trail Shuttle for our two day Timber Trail bike ride. They booked us into the Timber Trail Lodge for our two nights accommodation. They picked us up and shuttled us in on Friday night and then took us out Saturday morning to the start of the trail for that day. The whole experience was awesome. The bus driver was a local called Robb. He provided a running commentary which was interesting and peppered with humour. The lodge was fantastic and looked after us very well. The trails were amazing and a “must do”. We had a great experience and would highly recommend using this company for your Timber Trail experience. They made it easy and hassle free. Thanks to all the team

Recommend this company for shuttle service. We had our own bikes but their hires looked like quality bikes. Great instructions, on time and informative.
I’d recommend hiring a PLB from them for $35 because you are very isolated and without cell phone coverage for most of the trail. I also a surprising amount of people without a backpack etc to carry emergency gear if they were to run into trouble.

Staff were friendly and efficient, and they were running on time on the day we were there. They played down the extra distance from the end of the trail to get back to their base - they tell you it's only a couple of kms but neglect to mention they're uphill kms. But we were there to ride our bikes so that wasn't really a problem.
What was a problem was the guide's casual racism! Falsely claiming that there was 'nothing and nobody' in the area prior to 1940, that the derelict school had been left to rot due to an outstanding treaty settlement, that people who'd never been to Maniaiti/Benneydale had changed the name from Benneydale to Maniaiti (actually it's now a dual name). On the plus side, I did end up learning more about the area because his racism inspired me to look up the facts when I got home.

Hi Thank you for your feedback We are glad you found our staff to be friendly and efficient and apologise your experience may have been marred by a perception of casual racism. Our staff are encouraged to research and to impart this and local knowledge which may not be available online or in history books. Some of the information freely available is contradictory and or open to interpretation. We have a diverse staff ethnicity including land owners in Pureora. Racism is not something we tolerate within our company culture. Given this, we will revisit the origins of the areas pointed out and re-word our dialogue where appropriate. We again thank you for taking the time to post and are pleased that you found the area fascinating. We hope to see you again.

Everything worked very smoothly and perfectly on time.

It did take a few exchanges of emails to make sure that what we wanted was what we booked.

Having completed the process I can see that the initial details were correct but for the uninitiated it was not entirely clear what we needed to book. (which was two separate bookings : Ongarue to Piropiro on the night before Day 1 ride, and Piropiro to Pureora on the morning of Day 1 ride. The collecting of the bags from Piropiro on Day 2 is included somehow. so $65 + $50 per person).

regarding the ride itself - there is a fair bit of climbing on both days, and some downhill sections that benefit from a bit of riding experience: this is not a "pavement ride". So if you are a novice then hire an eBike or accept a bit of uphill walking. It's worth it for the stunning views, the amazing suspension bridges and the logging history on Day 2.

If you are short on time or money then doing a Day ride of the second (Piropiro to Ongarue) half is very worthwhile. It is the easier ride, it has the interesting logging history and a couple of the suspension bridges too.

So just make sure that everyone is clear about what is booked, and when!
