About
Each workshop is limited to only 4 students, with 2 accomplished instructors present at all times. This is to insure a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of metal art, with maximum safety.
* Tools you will learn to use include: mig and spot welders, plasma cutter, plate brake, multiple shears, grinders, drills, and other forming and pressing equipment.
All materials will be provided for you. They will include a variety of metals like: steel, iron, copper, and aluminum.
The Van Doren Metal Art Workshops will take place in our commercial studio, in the colonia of La Canada/Los Frailes, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. It is a quick 10 minute taxi ride from Centro. This is a one of a kind, metal sculpture studio, that has never before been open to the public.
*NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.

- peterlT2607XD00I Did It TwiceI have done the Van Doren workshop twice. I imagine that doing something twice proves that I received great value the first time. Alex is smart and an entertainer. The workshop is fun, a social experience with other class participants, very hands-on, I learned about metalworking and have made an African mask, a nice shiny heart sculpture for my grandkids and a small table for my outdoor patio. WOW. This is one of those Just Do It things.

I wish we would have taken it sooner. Absolutely incredible. I cannot say enough about the experience. Alex is an incredible teacher at the highest level. His craft is amazing. We felt lucky to have him with us. He and his father have so much knowledge. The shop is incredible. Over $100,000 of tools to use. We were taught in a safe and easy fast paced environment. Our art pieces will be displayed proudly in our homes for years to come. If you have been thinking about taking this workshop sign up and prepare to be amazed and have a blast. You spend a little over half a day to learn all this crazy workshop equipment (I'm in IT so knew nothing about it),..then the next day and a half are up to you to create something unique. He has all kinds of metal to work with, your classmates might be beginners like myself or experienced (multi visit) participants. Alex and your classmates have lots of ideas to help you figure out what to make. A super nice lunch is served both days and the whole experience was wonderful. I'll be back for another round soon!

The shop is set up for classes (along with their own commission work) for about 4 people. Alex is an amazing teacher, so considerate, knowledgeable. Safety comes first and he's right there to guide his students. Papa Lane, the patriarch of the place, checks on the students, makes suggestions and prepares a great lunch too! - joshuacO6677CF00The memories made with metal are super strong!Who knew metal could make so many memories? Apparently -- Van Doren Metal Art has known this for a long time! Alex and his crew curated the perfect day for our family (myself, my wife, and our 8-year-old daughter) to celebrate a birthday. And, it turned out to be a birthday like never before and not to be replicated. We learned about the history of metal, carefully used the tools, and then went home with a one-of-a-kind piece of art (that we made together). We also had an amazing lunch and are pretty sure we cemented a lifelong friendship with Alex, the owner, and his family. They are fantastic people! Needless to say, this experience is well worth your time, and the memories (like the metal), will last a lifetime.

An exceptional workshop. Alex and Lane are extremely knowledgeable and excellent teachers, providing explanations about all the tools and their uses, and offering advice, support and help as needed when working on our pieces.
I appreciated their attentive and careful guidance in planning the steps necessary to work on my project and their support in helping me complete my piece and I’m really happy about the result. This is an incredible course. And the best is their warmth, patience, and unfailing attention to each of us. Also their optimism. They make everything workable and helped us each learn and enjoy realizing our projects while ensuring our safety.
Even if you think you aren’t that our creative, you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish here. This is truly a remarkable course and after my multiple visits to San Miguel, I can say it’s one of the best activities in SMA. Don’t miss out.. take this course, have fun, learn lots, and walk away with a beautiful aesthetic conversation piece to share with friends.

People travel from all over to take this class and I can understand why! Alex’s passion for metal art is contagious. Alex teaches the course with his dad, Papa Lane, and their teaching style is engaging and fun. I attended the course with my young-adult kids and we had such a great time making art together. The time flew by and we all felt proud of our new skills and came away with some very cool artwork. We were also treated to delicious home-cooked lunches, got to hang out with Drago the friendly studio dog, and had our art photographed by Alex’s wife, Katie, who is a professional photographer and amazing realist artist. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to have a super enjoyable time learning new skills and making art!

This class was super fun and Alex is an amazing teacher, patient and funny! This is the one of the best classes I have taken during my 11 years in San Miguel and I hope to take another workshop soon. I created a wonderful, personalized, shelf for my bathroom that I could not have purchased anywhere for less than 200.00. Actually, I could not have purchased it anywhere because I added personal touches that would be impossible to find on the market. My friend made an art piece of the sort I have seen on sale for thousands of pesos. So, it's not only worth it to learn the skill but you also get to take home your awesome project!
Also, in the morning he has pastries and fresh coffee and the lunches are delicious!

The first class I took with Van Dorens’ (I just completed my 4th class) I was unsure of being able to come up with something I wanted to make. It has to be grand, right? Well, I’ve learned that if you listen, the metal will talk to you. Once you look through their stash of metal objects and shapes, a little idea will start forming in your head and before you know it, you’ve got that masterpiece you wanted! Alex and Papa Lane will support you and guide you and make suggestions along the way, and I promise you will have a permanent smile on your face as you cut, weld, shape and grind your project in their fully outfitted studio.

I thoroughly enjoyed the action packed two day Workshop at Van Doren Metal Arts. The studio is large, airy (which is important during these times), and well equipped with all the tools and supplies you will need to create and carry away your very own work of art. The hosts are professional metal structural artists and enthusiastically share their knowledge as you quickly gain skill and confidence safely using unfamiliar tools.

I did a one day workshop with Alex. It was lots of fun, very informative and entertaining. We spent most of the day learning about the equipment, which only left one hour to work on our masterpiece. In the end, I was happy with the results. Alex was very helpful in the execution. However, I recommend the two day workshop to give you more time to work on your creation.

This was a great 5 hour class with Alex and Lane. My wife and I had a fun time, learned a lot and we each made a metal project to remember our trip by. Lane and Alex are a father and son team that have been designing and constructing commercial and residential metal artwork for decades. If you have ever wanted to weld, mold or manipulate metal and learn about the various ways to work with metal; this is the class for you. Having taken this class we are now inspired to get involved in metal art and turn the and turn the garage into a workshop!

Our time with Alex was special from the moment we arrived! Every moment was filled with learning and laughing with excellent food served to top off a super enjoyable day. Learning about metal working was made interesting and then being able to actually craft something was amazing. Alex is a great teacher, it’s a safe environment and truly a one of a kind experience. He loves his craft and it shows in everything he does. The combination of tools and art is an exceptional type of craft and everyone will be able to make something with instruction by Alex. I’m so happy with my little project!

Incredible experience. Alex is very nice and you can do everything you imagine. The workshop not only has super professional machines to work with metal, but you also find all kinds of materials to blow your imagination and create incredible pieces. Alex's experience and good humor will take you on an adventure in creating metal art.

I can never get enough of the AMAZING Van Doren Metal Art Workshop. I just finished my fourth session. Apart from getting to hang with the fantastic Van Dorens (Alex and Papa Lane), I always meet great new people and surprise myself with the things I make. Who could ever imagine that working with metal is so versatile, expressive and easy. Plus, it's very cool to have pix with sparks flying all over the place!! Can't wait for the fifth opportunity.
