What to expect
  • The Cañada de la Virgen, a Mesoamerican archaeological park just a short drive from San Miguel de Allende, remains one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets. During this action-packed day tour, join a team of bona fide archaeologists and anthropologists and embark on an in-depth exploration of the under-the-radar ancient site, only open to the public since 2011. Escape San Miguel de Allende’s crowds and settle back as you cruise through the Mexican countryside. At the park, get detailed and enriching background on the history of the Otomi people, traditionally one of Mexico’s most peaceful, mountain-dwelling indigenous groups, from specialists of the Bajio region. Wander the 2-mile (3-kilometer) site at your own pace and get a peek at the off-the-beaten-track ruins, some dating back to the sixth century. See an old observatory, a colossal temple, and the former homes of astronomer-priests, who kept alive the group’s cosmological traditions.

Our trip was amazing! We had Horacio as our guide and he could not have been more perfect. He was very knowledgeable and engaging, helped us with every little detail. He even dropped us off at our next tour destination. The authentic lunch on the ranch was exceptional. My daughter and I enjoyed every minute! Thanks again!

Archaeologist Albert Coffee is passionate, articulate & clearly an expert on this site. He explained how historians thought “mezo-American” pyramids only existed further south in Mexico & Central America until this great pyramid (& now others) was found on private land in 1995. Private tours have been allowed since 2011.
Be prepared for lots of walking up & down hill in this lovely (usually arid) natural canyon area. Definitely enjoyed the experience& worthwhile, educational tour!

Lino kept us all enthralled with stories about the history of the pyramid and the peoples who built it. We are a tough group to please with 5 family members( with graduate degrees) since we always want more information. Lino covered everything from construction, to botany of the area, to what is know about the lives of the ancient peoples. Lots of gradual walking to and from the site but the vistas are amazing and Lino paints a great picture of what it must have been like when this was a sacred site. Highly recommend!

Our small group tour was well-planned, enjoyable and very informative. Our tour guide, Lino, was very knowledgeable and nice to be around for several hours. The walk from where the official Park van let's you off to the site is uphill but not over rough ground. Climbing one of the pyramids is a part of the tour. After the tour you are driven to a local farm for a wonderful lunch made from items grown on the farm. Highly recommend it if you are comfortable walking.
