Overview

Canada de la Virgen is a set of ancient pilgrimage sites located outside San Miguel de Allende, only open to the public since 2011. During this immersive tour, run by archaeologists, you’ll get a rare insight into the Otomi people, one of Mexico’s indigenous groups. The archaeological park, with origins in the sixth century, contains the ruins of an observatory, colossal temple, and burial chambers.

What to Expect

The Canada de la Virgen, a Mesoamerican archaeological park just a short drive from San Miguel de Allende, remains one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets. During this action-packed day tour, join a team of bona fide archaeologists and anthropologists and embark on an in-depth exploration of the under-the-radar ancient site, only open to the public since 2011.

Escape San Miguel de Allende’s crowds and settle back as you cruise through the Mexican countryside. At the park, get detailed and enriching background on the history of the Otomi people, traditionally one of Mexico’s most peaceful, mountain-dwelling indigenous groups, from specialists of the Bajio region.

Wander the 2-mile (3-kilometer) site at your own pace and get a peek at the off-the-beaten-track ruins, some dating back to the sixth century. See an old observatory, a colossal temple, and the former homes of astronomer-priests, who kept alive the group’s cosmological traditions.

We booked through Viator tours and were lucky to have Alberto Caffe as our guide, an anthropologist who has spend years working on the site. His knowledge of the subject matter and his entertaining delivery made these ancient ruins come alive. He also gave us...More

Alberto’s passion for the pyramid is infectious. He’s so knowledgeable about the whole area, its history, people and culture. It was a perfect day and we had the first tour of the day so there were only three others besides my husband and me. If...More
