        Quite an adventure!
The Rio Secreto was quite an adventure. We did the Cenote + tour, which included two ziplining experiences and one rappel experience., as well as a short bike ride and hike. I deducted a star because it was not clear (at least to me) that the water level in a couple of spots in the cave is deep and requires one to swim or float a short distance. This was not an issue for most of our group. However, I experienced much anxiety when suddenly, my feet no longer touched the floor of the cave, as I am not a good swimmer. Also, be aware that some of the rocks on the cave floor are uneven, and some are jagged. I strongly recommend you opt for "Walking Stick." Again, most of those in my group did not have any problems with the suddenly deeper water. This was a personal issue. The meal after the tour was very good. The photographer's photos taken in the cave were available for purchase for 100 USD. I recommend this excursion. The unique and rare formations in the cave are worth seeing.

        Highlight of our trip
We just returned from our trip to Playa. I don't normally write reviews, but this tour was quite special. The cave/river tour was amazing with a refreshing underwater river with "living" stalagities every where you looked. The trip also included a nice meal and ended the day at the Mayan ruins in Tulum. Special shout out to our guide Tianara who made the experience even better. I have already recommend her to friends visiting this week The only negative is the price they charge for pictures (and cameras are prohibited). I couldn't bring myself to pay what they were asking.

horrible show, overcrowded, overrated - not worth
this place is over rated, their show is worth only for $30 to $40. they keep selling ticket more than the capacity. you will not even have a space to stand. domestic drinks are printed in the ticket but very hard to get from them. they only serve the vip pass tickets. show was very basic, the space for performance was very tiny. looks like a amateur show. incase of an emergency guests can't exit this place.. try other clubs in the city.

        I recommend this excursion!!
This was one of the best Tours I've done. Our tour guide was Tainara, and she was awesome. She was very knowledgeable about the caves and the crystals that grow there. She made me feel at ease as I am very clumsy and she caught me as I stumbled a few times on the rocks. They also provided a Mayan lunch which was really tasty. I would recommend to anyone that is in the area and wants to try something different.

        Best-Kept Secret - Rio Secreto
Okay, this is an excursion that you do NOT want to miss. I traveled to Mexico for work and the ONLY thing I wanted to do for myself was see the Mayan ruins in Tulum - so when presented with Rio Secreto at the hotel I stayed at (Hilton Mar Caribe!) and they offered me an all-day (6:55am-5:00pm) trip that gave me an added bonus of SWIMMING INSIDE A CAVE, I elected to go for it! Now, I am traveled solo, but it wasn’t even an issue. I woke up and caught the beginning of the sunrise over Cancun, then headed toward the front of the resort to meet the driver. A sprinter van pulled up, and Cesar greeted me with a smile and asked to see my ticket. We traveled to three other hotels to pick up a couple of families (no small children in my tour group, but definitely a baby or two as we went on!) and a couple of couples. Cesar was knowledgeable about the land, jovial, friendly, played good music, and paid excellent attention to the road. He was such an accommodating driver and I’m grateful to have met him! We stopped at a gas station after about 45 minutes or an hour to allow anyone on board to use the restroom, and I purchased a bottle of water. When we got to Rio Secreto, we met Tainara - our tour guide. All smiles and bouncy personality, she prepared us for what was to come: she taught us about respecting the space we were about to enter, she was playful and thoughtful, and kept close watch over the elders in our group. First, we put on our required water shoes and swimsuits, then locked our belongings in a locker that we received a lock and key for: our clothes, phones, cameras, and other valuables went into the locker. Next, we took a shower that drew water directly from the cave and used that as a basis to determine who would be more comfortable in a wetsuit. (I elected to have one!) The wetsuit was relatively easy to put on, and had a long string you can use if you’re traveling solo! What a relief! At this point, you are given a hardhat with a light affixed and a life vest that Tainara ensured fit each of us the right way. Here, we met Lareidis - our photographer for the cave experience. He took wonderful photos (yes, we bought them!) throughout the duration, assisted us as the ground became more difficult to navigate, and also helped get someone back to surface when she realized that an underground cave filled with water really wasn’t her idea of fun! Let’s backtrack though - before entering the cave, we were invited to participate in a ceremony by a Mayan elder who blessed us from wherever we came, and invited safety on our journey. What a beautiful place! It was living art, and my goodness I was so thrilled with how excited Tainara was as she led us through the environment. I had the most amazing journey and experience - we swam together, played a little bit, meditated, and learned about the life underground. As we had many in our party who weren’t fluent in Spanish, she spoke fluently in English and honored us with Spanish when someone spoke Spanish to her. There were a couple of cenotes in the cave, which were such a holy feeling to witness. The grounds are kept well preserved - it’s literally swimming inside a natural history museum! Each time one of our group elders needed extra assistance, either of our guides stepped in without even being asked! It felt like the reverence that was due to the place of worship was greatly honored and it was such a pleasure to have this experience. I will definitely be bringing people back as much as I can! When we finished the cave system, I had 10 new friends, I swear! We trekked back to the starting point and then got back into the clothes we started in, depositing the borrowed lock and key, water shoes, wetsuit, and life vests. Time for buffet! We started with a shot of traditional Mayan alcoholic drink - shoot it! It was reminiscent of anise and very, very good! What interesting dishes and fresh Jamaica tea! We got to view the photos and had the remaining 25 minutes before disembarking for Tulum! Once back inside the van, we drove for 45 minutes and some napped and some stayed awake - most importantly, our driver from before - Cesar! Two hours was the time allotment for the Mayan ruins - and again, here Tamara stood out - she gave us so much juicy information about the culture, the collapse, the disappearance of, and the gods of the Mayans. She knew about their foods, drinks, animals, planting seasons, and had some of her own curiosities that haven’t ever been answered - why seven fingers? She showed us photos of what the ruins would have looked like in the 1200’s - what exquisite beauty! I had no idea and I am so glad that I took a chance. Anywho… I’m sure that if you have read this far, you’re going to go on your own journey here - one of the BEST decisions you will make in your lifetime. Words of advice: eat before you go! This is hard work! If you decide that it isn’t for you, be brave and speak up! There is no shame in deciding that you cannot continue! Take pictures at the ruins - I am sure that with the continued hurricanes, they won’t be here forever. Bug spray and sunblock are good friends of yours. Get rid of the plastic water bottles - they aren’t allowed in Tulum! No, you can’t bring a tripod, I •tried• You can bring a camera though! Please tip your driver, guide, and food helpers, consider leaving a review. They survive on tourists!

        A must do!!!
Everyone at this place was top notch. It’s very affordable. I took an Uber from my resort but had to have them schedule a van for the return ride because there was no Uber connection available. Pepe was our guide and he was amazing!! We had small children and one handicapped individual in our group which he handled so eloquently that everyone was super happy at the end. The cave itself is unreal!! Be prepared to pay for pics. I am not usually the one to buy pics from a trip but these came out so beautiful I purchased the entire package!! It’s a one of a kind adventure that everyone will remember for the rest of their natural life. Thank you Pepe for such a wonderful experience!!

Amazing experience, with a bitter end.
This place is amazing.l The whole experience is well organized, starting with the fee parking (if you come by car), and accessible by public transportation. We came by taxi, which is not cheap if you are staying in a hotel as they are very organized in unions and have a fixed price for tourists. Check the various sites offering the tours as pricing varies, and sometimes with the available promo codes you can get a lower price than the on site ticket price. The price of the ticket includes all the equipment needed: water shoes, wet suit, helmet, head lamp, cane (yes, you want to take the cane with you even if you are fit). Once you check in and assigned a tour guide (depending on group size and the speaking language), you get on a minivan transfer about 3 miles away to the start point. You enter the underground river with your group, and the site is so huge that you don't meet or mingle with the other groups. Our group was just 2 couples including us, the guide and a photographer, so it felt like a private tour. The underground scenery is unbelievably beautiful, the guide is very knowledgeable and helpful and points to various formations, give an explanation of the geological and historical facts. Overall I highly recommend this trip if you are a nature lover. At the end of the trip ~ 2 hours, you are taken back by van to the start point, where you return the equipment and get your personal stuff (free lockers with locks included), and then served lunch. If your ticket includes transportation you will be then taken back to your hotel. There is also taxi services available on site. Cons: You are asked at the start NOT to take your phone or camera. I believe it is a liability issue, so if you don't ask you may take it at your own risk. The photographer that comes with the group takes many pictures along the way in specific spots, and at the end of the tour you can view the pictures on a desktop display. And here is the catch. You can buy the pictures $15 each or pay $120 for all the pictures. For a ticket that costs $85 per person (without transportation, which is extra depending on where you are coming from), it is a rip off. There is no justification to charge that much for digital pictures that have $0 cost to process. It leaves you with a very bad taste at the end of an amazing experience. I would have given it a 5 star if it wasn’t for the pictures issue. Overall recommended.

        We had a blast!
The Secret River Cave excursion in Mexico was an absolute blast! Our guides, Addie and Manuel, were fantastic, offering a perfect mix of fun and knowledge that made the experience even more enjoyable. The group sizes were ideal—about 8 people—so it never felt crowded. Upon arrival, we were equipped with everything we needed: a shortie wet suit, a helmet fitted with a light, water shoes, a life jacket, and even an optional walking stick for those who preferred it. These provisions were essential for navigating the cave's terrain safely and comfortably. After a fascinating Mayan blessing, the real adventure begins. Yes, this excursion is physically active, and you’ll be in the cave for a couple of hours, but it’s definitely manageable. I was hesitant after reading some stern reviews, especially since I’m older and out of shape, but I’m so glad I went! It’s worth pushing yourself because the experience is unforgettable. If you're looking for an exciting, unique adventure in Mexico, this is a must-do! The buffet lunch at the end of our expedition was delicious—photographs of the excursions were personalized and available at the lunch location. Brace yourself they are pricey but worth the memory. Overall, the Secret River excursion exceeded all expectations. It's an unforgettable opportunity to witness Mexico's hidden treasures firsthand, making it a must-do for anyone seeking adventure and natural beauty in equal measure.

These guys are absolute scam artists, avoid this awful tour at all costs!
The first stop on this tour is the seemingly wholesome Real Mayab Hotel and adjoining gift shop. En route to the hotel the guide told us all about the local Mayan community and we were told a shaman would give us a traditional blessing on arrival. We were also told that any purchases we made at the gift shop would contribute greatly to the local Mayan community, so we were happy to peruse the gift shop and it’s offerings.
I saw a bracelet which caught my eye and when I asked how much it cost I was told $1000mx. So I happily made the purchase and then we continued with the tour. Only the next day did I realise I was charged over $9000mx!!! As soon as I realised I contacted the Real Mayab Hotel directly and was in contact with one of their employees via WhatsApp for a number of days. He asked how much I would like to pay for the bracelet and tried to negotiate a price with me through text (because he knew I had been scammed at the gift shop). This back and forth continued for a few days until he stopped answering my texts and calls.
I also went to the Super Aki supermarket a number of times to meet the tour guides. I told them what had happened and asked for their help to get some of my money back. They very clearly didn’t care. One of the guides gave me his mobile number and told me he would be in touch after they visited the hotel that morning. I never heard from him and when I tried to call him I discovered he gave me a fake number. The whole experience left such a sour taste.
The hotel and gift shop is also where you spend the most amount of time on this tour. Sadly you only get 50 minutes at the Cenote and just 30 minutes in Valladolid. They put huge pressure on you to purchase things at the gift shop. Things which we then saw in other shops for a fraction of the price! It’s all a scam. There are much better tours available in Tulum and Cancun. This is a shambles, run by absolute scam artists and should be avoided at all costs!

organization of the excursion was awful

It’s important for understanding the context - in the confirmation email after booking organization told us take cash (only $13 for each person).

Our pick up was at 9:40. We spend there 30 minutes to our guide collect money for entrance to the park. My question number 1: why they didn’t collect it at the moment of booking? But ok, you ask us to have it in conformation email.

Then we came to our bus where there was extremely few places between seats. Though we need to seat there during more then 2 hours.

Then our guide start his speech using 2 languages: English and Spanish. My question number 2: why we choose in check box “English or Spanish” if you are going to use both languages at the same time?

Our first stop was place with the cafe. Before the lunch our guide Gonzalo 40 min try to sell us souvenirs, show us each of them. My question number 3: why I need to spend my time for hearing this information if in the description of this excursion we have 2 experience: chichenica and cenote.

After it we must walk in the souvenirs shop 20 min.
My question number 4: why I need to spend the time of the excursion for doing it, if this activity was out of agenda?

After it we had lunch 1 hour. Here you can’t buy anything by card. My question number 5: why you can do card payment in your shop but can’t do it in the cafe?

Then we have our way to the park. During our transportation our guide decided to try to sell to us some alcohol drink with our photo. My question number 6: why my excursion even don’t started but I am full of marketing staff already from our guide?

Then we came to the park. We were with go pro. And we also need to pay for entrance with camera by cash. If you want to rent umbrella - the same picture.
Than we have excursion in the park. It was interesting. In the park there were a lot of souvenirs shop so I would like repeat my question number 4: why we spend 1 hour before our lunch in our first stop if we can do the same later in the park by ourselves?

Then we had the way to the cenote. When we arrived we need to pay for the life jacket and the locker only by cash. Without life jacket you can’t swim in the cenote. So in this case life jacket is the ticket to the cenote. My question number 7: what include to the $69 which I spend during booking this excursion if I pay extra everywhere?
Swimming in the cenote was vary good but not enough time.

Our excursion finished at 8 p.m. almost full day off, waste time for useless activities but it was a lack of time for really interesting activities.

So I totally don’t like this experience. If you want to visit these beautiful places - my recommendation is to do it by yourself by car or with different organization. It will be faster, cheaper and more comfortable.

Dear customer, Thank you for your time and feedback, this helps us to improve our service. We are glad to answer your questions: 1. This fee (tax) takes part of government law for the entrance to Chichen-Itzá and it must be covered for all passengers who book the tour after January, 1st 2019, the fee is not refundable and must be paid with cash to the tour guide at the time of boarding. 2. The tour is offered in English and Spanish, which means in both languages, that is the reason our tour guide is bilingual certified. We need to know how many people speak each language for quality purposes. 3. During the journey, your guide provides a historical overview of Chichen-itzá, and of course, we will share the souvenir options. Buying is completely optional. 4. As a public tour, we give free time in the shopping area while the previous group leaves the restaurant. Buying is completely optional. 5. The restaurant and the shopping area 2 different businesses, unfortunately, it is out of our handles. 6. Chichen-itzá is located in another State of Mexico and is a long ride to arrive; however, our team shared Mayan or Local stories during the journey with the option to buy souvenirs, once again, buying is completely optional. 7. The same answer for this one, this is a public tour and we have an itinerary scheduled, unfortunately, we cannot give so much free time in Chichen-itzá for shopping. 8. You paid US 69 for the classic Chichen-itzá, this tour includes round-trip transportation from Tulum, a guided visit to Chichen-itzá, a lunch buffet, and a visit to a cenote for swimming and bottled water. We understand that you want another category, for a more comfortable and private tour, next time we suggest booking another category or a Private Chichen-itzá Tour. We hope to see you soon! Kind regards

We loved everything about this tour! I’m not great with remembering names so all I could remember was Gonzalos name. This crew on October 18th were amazing and went far and beyond expectations . The driver kudos to him it’s not easy driving 4 hours. I felt safe ! There was another tour guide along he was so so nice and so was Gonzalo . They both were very funny . The knowledge about the Mayan culture that they knew was unbelievable . Things you aren’t going to find on the history channel . They knew how to answer everything. I’m so glad this tour cares so much about the Mayan culture we need more authentic tours in this world like this to avoid ignorance and keep cultures alive. You could really tell this crew loves their job and proud of their culture! Be prepared : Bring a towel and bathing suits and extra clothes for the cenote and bring water, sun block , and a hat to protect from the sun it does get hot . Also, be prepared to sleep like a baby when you return to your hotel we did soo much !

Explanation of Chichen Itzá history! I was hesitant to go on the tour but I am so happy I did. Gonzalo our tour guide was awesome and very educated about the history of this place, he explained in Spanish and English not to mention his sense of humor. He makes the bus ride feels short with the stories and jokes he told! Who ever have him as their guide is lucky he is humble and respectful.

This was a great tour. I wish we could have had a but more time at the Cenote and the town but we had plenty of time at the ruins and we had time to jump in to the cenote a few times and swim around. We somehow managed to get some ice cream and tacos in the short time at the small town on the way home which was nice!

Some of the reviews were upset about trying to be sold or pressured to buy things and honestly if you've traveled or been on a tour like this before its really not a big deal. It's part of the day and we did not buy anything and no one batted an eye. We did leave a tip to the driver and the two guides at the end of the trip because we felt it was well deserved. They had a 14+ hour day and never lost their energy or great moods.

Lunch was good and the guides were very knowledgable. The bus was super nice, comfortable and air conditioned, we had plenty of space.

I would reccommend that they tell you what to look for when they pick you up. Our bus was a huge "finding nemo" colored bus that would have been very easy to spot if we knew what we were looking for at the hotel entrance but they did not let us know so we waited for 15-20 minutes when the bus was there waiting on us as well until we finally figured it out.

Other than that it was a great trip and I would definitely reccommend. My favorite part was definitely the cenote :)

We booked the Chichen Itza tour through Playa del Carmen tours, on the e-ticket it stated very clearly that pick up was from our hotel lobby. On the day we were at the lobby very early eagerly waiting for the transport to arrive, they never did. Finally got in touch with playa del Carmen tours and they said the driver has us as no shows, he was waiting at the front gates as the hotel apparently only lets in affiliated tour companies. Well no, the ticket clearly stated pick up at lobby, that’s exactly where we were, the driver said we were sent an email telling us to get picked up at the gate, funny though that all this was said an hour and a half after our pick up time

So anyway our tour was moved to the next day but it screwed our our entire planned week as we had to then move a different tour to another day as well. I don’t blame the booking agency for this but it is more on the tour company, why couldn’t the driver ask the gate security to make a simple phone call to the lobby and we could have gone to the gate.

The next day we got picked up at the gate and proceeded to chichen itza. The problem with the way they do this is that you stop for lunch at this Mayan school place, you can buy souvenirs at the very extensive gift shop, get a whole speech about the shaman and stuff then have lunch, in all it’s about a 2 hour stop here and of course a major cash grab which of course you expect.

My problem is that chichen itza is unbelievably hot and humid, it would be better to get there early and do the other stuff after. Also the tour bus apparently had cold water but none was offered to the guests apart from the people who were premium guests. Now in my opinion, they know how hot that place is, they should be making sure all guests have water to drink. We went in with our tour guide who takes you to a few spots giving you the history etc, it was extremely difficult to concentrate while standing under the baking sun, our friend started to suffer from heat stroke and my wife was not doing well either, they had to go and try to find shade and water. They couldn’t enjoy the experience at all and missed out on seeing everything, this could have been better for them had water been made available.
Don’t get me wrong, chichen itza is a must see place but I think the tour company can do much better.

After this it onto the cenote swim experience. This is a joke, you get 1 hour there, in that time you need to get your wristband, get your life jacket, which you pay for, it’s mandatory, get changed and go in the water, you are lucky if you get 15 minutes in there. We didn’t bother swimming, just knew it wouldn’t be worth it.

After this we end up stopping in this little town, all well and good but it was for 30 minutes, no time to do anything, seems pointless.

I just feel the tour company didn’t put a lot of effort into making sure guests were taken care of, seems like it was minimal effort

The booking was a very easy process. The communication after that and the pick-up arrangement was easy and quick. The bus came on time. They provided food and drinks on the bus which was really good.
The tour guy bearly spoke English it was impossible to understand what he was saying. On the bus, I felt pushed to buy a mosquito repellant for $10 a tiny bottle while it was a rainy day and no mosquitoes out at all. I wish they would offer a rain poncho instead. Overall it's an average experience, I am glad we took this tour instead of driving ourselves.

We had a dreadful experience on this tour. We were so rushed at Chichen Iza and didn’t feel like we got any kind of thorough explanation about its history. We also didn’t even get an hour at the Cenote which was just awful. We only got to spend 30 minutes in Valladolid which made no sense whatsoever. We spent the most time at a gift shop beside the Real Mayab Hotel where we felt immense pressure to buy souvenirs. The guides put so much pressure on us while we were driving there and then the employees followed us around the store trying to encourage us to make purchases. It felt very uncomfortable!! We also ate a “lunch” buffet here which was nasty. The drinks aren’t included in the price which they don’t tell you! And they offer you soft drinks and beer when you sit down. The whole experience was just awful. There’s much better tours out there, give this one a miss!!!!

I’m very glad we booked this tour. Our guide, Gonzalo, was so knowledgeable and also funny. We enjoyed learning the history of Chichen Itza and the Mayan way of life.
On the way down we drove through a Mayan town and got a glimpse into the present day Mayans.
Then we stopped in a town where there was a Shaman and some gift shops and a buffet lunch. After that was a short drive to Chichen Itza, where your tour guide walks you around pointing out interesting facts. I’m not sure if it’s because we went on a Tuesday or because of Covid but it was not crowded and we were able to get photos without anyone in the background. You do have to wear a mask the entire trip. Then you have free time to explore before heading back to the vans to go to the Cenote Saamal. The cenote was crowded as all four of our tour buses were traveling and stopping together. So it was okay. Then you stop in Vallalolid and see the main square with a chance to buy street food (elote, churro, marquesitas, etc). After that it’s about an hour and a half back to Tulum.
We really enjoyed it and glad we booked a tour as our Spanish is not great.

Víctor, Luna, and Jimmy were all wonderful on this tour. They were professional, informational, and kept the atmosphere up with their humor. The food at the lunch stop was delicious. I had a wonderful time on this tour and cannot recommend it enough. It was less priced at around $80 plus the $30 fee for Chichén Itzá and $4 rental of the life vest. Very fun time, i highly suggest you do it.
