About
One of the earliest inhabited Maya sites, Muyil is an ancient trading port on Mexico’s Quintana Roo coast. Unlike other archaeological parks, it’s smaller and less crowded—the perfect place to admire stunning temples, such as the stepped pyramid of El Castillo. During this in-depth guided tour from Tulum, you’ll explore the jungle-filled ruins and hop aboard a lagoon cruise for a scenic ride through mangroves and orchids, followed by a delicious vegetarian lunch.

What to expect
  • The ruins of Muyil, an ancient Maya trading port on the Mexican Caribbean, are part of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the region’s largest protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During this in-depth guided tour, you’ll explore both nature and culture, making time for both centuries-old artifacts and a nature-filled cruise across a lagoon. Departing from Tulum, you’ll get a firsthand peek at world-famous Maya temples, such as the 57-foot (17-meter) building known as El Castillo. Admire the diverse, semi-deciduous forest of Sian Ka’an, which makes for an incredible backdrop to the ruins. Once you’ve explored the site, you’ll follow a lush jungle trail through the reserve to Muyil lagoon. Board a boat and glide across the crystal-clear water along a canal that has been in use for centuries and which leads into the Caribbean Sea. Listen to different birdsongs as you admire the spectacular wetlands, where you’ll see exotic vegetation, such as mangroves, orchids, and cacti. Excellent tour
Aug 2021 • Friends
Valeria was an excellent tour guide. You could feel that she is very interested in the topic herself. She had a lot of visuals with her to help us follow and understand her explanations about the templestructures and mayan culture.

Expensive but great tour
Valeria was a great tourguide with a wide knowledge. We really enjoyed the trip. However, it's rather expensive and they only had a vegetarian menu (with mushrooms).
The highlight was swimming in the mangroves.

Thanks a lot for your great feedback Daniel, Operating in Sian Kaan is indeed expensive... especially as we provide only small group tours in order to have a lower impact on the environment we visit and to provide personalized experiences. We are glad you enjoyed swimming in the mangroves!

A new appreciation for Nature
Aug 2021 • Friends
We recently took a all ladies trip to Tulum. One of the best part of the trip was our tour of the Sian Ka’an. Valeria was amazing. She gave great information about the history and the culture of the Mayan land and the significance of the architecture left behind by the Mayans. The boat ride was mesmerizing and the best part was floating through the Sian Ka’an river, it was just a very peaceful experience. I have a new appreciation of nature. Thank you Valeria!

Amazing Tour with Great Guide
Jul 2021
This was an amazing tour. Carlos was an excellent and knowledgable guide. He was enthusiastic about the Muyil ruins and their history. Educational and interesting tour and a beautiful, once in a lifetime float afterwards! Would highly recommend spending a day of your vacation experiencing the history and natural beauty of Sian Ka'an.

One-of-a-Kind Experience
Jun 2021
This excursion was a highlight of my visit, having the perfect balance of nature, adventure, relaxation, and unique activities. From climbing up the tower for a spectacular view of the lagoon and learning so much about the Mayan culture, to a delicious vegetarian lunch (vegan chorizo!) and using the life jacket as a "diaper" to float down the crystal-clear lagoon, the day kept getting better and better! Our tour guide, Alberto, was the cherry on top - he was professional, funny, and really made our group feel special (even making a playlist for the bride!)

The company, and its guides, seems to be very passionate about the environment and ecosystem, which I appreciated, so don't forget your coral-friendly bug spray/sun lotion.

Eco-conscious and respectful of Mayan culture/ Cenote tour with Karen
Jul 2021
If you visit Tulum, you must do a tour with Mexico Kan. This is one of the few tour companies that do not exploit the natural environment and Mayan culture of the Tulum area. We learned so much about the natural area as well as Mayan culture in a way that was eco-conscious and respectful of the ancient culture which is slowly ebbing away due to tourism that isn't done in an efficient way.

We did two tours with Mexico Kan and both were amazing.

The first one was with Sian Ka'an Muyil and a "lazy river". It was beautiful and relaxing, and we loved our guide Marco.

The second one was a new one which is not yet listed. We went to 3 cenotes. The final one was private and very enchanting. Karen was our amazing tour guide, very knowledgeable, fun, patient, and passionate about caring for the world of the Mayans.

Go do the cenote tour with Karen- you won't regret it!

Cool excursion, GREAT guide (Luigi)
This is a great excursion to go on, especially with a great guide like Luigi (ask for him). Luigi was very knowledgeable and hospitable. The Mayan ruins were cool, but my favorite part was the natural lazy river at the end. It’s about a kilometer or so long.

Pleasant Experience
Jun 2021
My wife and I participated in a tour with Marie and had a really nice experience. Marie was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the Maya archeological sites and history, as well as the Sian Ka'an marsh and canals. It was a hot day in June that we finished off with a refreshing float down a Mayan canal through the marsh and mangroves.

What an amazing tour! I learned a lot about the Mayans from our excellent tour guide Marie. The float down the "lazy river" was better than a spa experience. I felt so relaxed at the end. This time of year is spectacular to take the tour as well. There were beautiful butterflies all over the place and the orchids are still blooming among the mangroves on the "lazy river." I had a friend who had to cancel at the last minute, so I went solo. Very safe and comfortable for solo travelers. Spectacular day!!
