- Nikki940860 contributionsDelicious Food Tour with Abbey in Playa del CarmenAbbey was amazing! We had such a great time on the tour and got to try many new Mexican dishes we had never heard of before. She was incredibly kind and patient, carefully accommodating all our dietary restrictions. Abbey also shared fascinating insights about typical Mexican dishes specific to the region, making the experience both delicious and educational. During the food tour, she gave us a brief but delightful glimpse of Playa del Carmen, which added an extra layer of charm to the experience. The selection of restaurants was excellent, and we never felt unsafe or encountered any hygiene concerns along the way. I highly recommend this food tour, even if you're not vegan. - V2310ZDchristiner0 contributionsAuthentic taste of MexicoWhere do I begin! We were greeted with cold hibiscus juice & had an opportunity to take a photo by Parque Los Fundadores before we started. Indra was a very informative, enthusiastic and kind tour guide. It was wonderful to walk around areas outside of 5th Avenue to see a more authentic Playa del Carmen and get a true taste of Mexico. By the end of the tour I couldn't eat another bite! We stopped at a market where I bought coffee and Indra kindly offered to keep it in his back pack until the end of the tour. I then forgot it and he RAN ALL THE WAY BACK TO 5th avenue to find us to return the coffee. It's a miracle he found us again! Bless him! My friend also has a nut allergy and he made sure everything was safe for her to eat. Highly recommended tour with a wonderful guideWritten July 17, 2024

I did the Authentic Local Food Tour in Playa del Carmen and couldn't have had a better time. To start, the guide Juan was fantastic. He was very easy to find outside the bus station with his Eating with Carmen shirt and sign. Throughout the tour he did a great job talking about Playa del Carmen, explaining all of the foods we were trying, and making conversation. He had the perfect personality for a food tour guide and made it a really fun time.
As far as the food, it was all delicious. I lost count of how many different things we sampled but they were all really good. I have a big appetite and can eat a lot but I was quite full by the end of it. Although we started off on 5th Avenue, the main tourist area, we immediately walked away from it and onto smaller streets. Every place he took me was a little hole in the wall restaurant or food cart. There is no way I would have been able to find these places on my own and even if I had searched before coming most of them don't have any sort of website. There are so many restaurants along 5th Avenue and even more tiny places along every road in Playa del Carmen so it can be overwhelming to try to figure out which ones are worth checking out, so this tour was incredibly useful for that.
Overall, I'd definitely do this tour again if I come back to Playa and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try some great Mexican food.

This tour not only allowed our family to taste some of the best food that Playa del Carmen has to offer, but it provided us with and educational experience about Mexican culture and cuisine. Coco was knowledgeable and fun to hang out with. He taught us about the rich history and culture of Playa del Carmen and shared stories about the neighborhoods we walked through and the food we were enjoying. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the city center with a fun, local guide and to anyone who enjoys great food! Come hungry.
"Don't trust a Mexican when they tell you the food isn't spicy." -Coco :)

We had the privilege of taking this tour with Faustino in January. I honesty didn’t know what to expect but he delivered an exceptional experience!! We got some great history, saw some beautiful street art, enjoyed some delicious quesadillas, fruit drinks, yummy street tacos from two vendors, authentic chicken mole and finished up with a sweet crepe that left us full and completely satisfied!! Faustino was kind, gracious and patient- we are thankful for him and consider him a new friend. We highly recommend this for travelers who are not afraid to get out in the community and try new things.

The food tour far exceeded my expectations! It was both a cultural and gastronomical experience. It included 5 stops including a fruit market, street vendors, and other local/independently-run food spots. The tour takes you just minutes outside the PDC tourist zone into The Real PDC..Juan engagingly weaved together Mexican food culture/history and street art. Come hungry and you won't be disappointed!

My husband and I booked the 10am tour last Monday, April 18, 2022 in Playa del Carmen. We had the extreme pleasure of being matched with Victor.
Over the course of the next three hours, Victor guided us away from the hustle, bustle and hot mess that is Quinta Avenida. It was mind blowing that a few blocks away from the tourist traps so many amazing places exist.
Between food stops, Victor explained the different neighbourhoods and showed us some really cool things like street graffiti, the circles on the calles (Mayan street signs) and gave us some history of the areas we were walking through.
In between, we enjoyed:
Tamales de pollo
Quesadillas
Crickets!
Enchiladas con mole
Fresh fruit juice from a mercado
Tacos (your choice from the street cart)
Carnitas (OMG so good!!!)
Paleta (popsicle of your choice)
I would 100% recommend this tour and do it again. Would love to do the 5pm one next time. Thank you, Victor, for the amazing experience! The next time we’re in PDC we will be sure to book another tour.
Notes:
I made a very rookie mistake of eating breakfast earlier that day (around 7:30am), thinking we wouldn’t be getting that much to eat and I could handle it. So wrong. Don’t be me. I still enjoyed all the food but it would’ve been better on an empty stomach.
Although the walking distance doesn’t cover too far of a distance from the starting point, the heat makes it feel extra. Just something to consider. We walked at a comfortable place. Nothing was hurried or rushed.
You will get one juice to start (we got tamarind juice right at the beginning) but I’d advise bringing extra bottles of water. I had finished my tamarind juice between tasting #2-3.
The stop where you get the fresh juice at the market, I purchased two mangoes to bring back to the hotel for 10 pesos total. The produce there was so vibrant and incredible. If I had a shopping bag, I would’ve bought more.
Don’t start chowing down on your popsicle right away. I ripped mine out of the plastic wrap and held it by the wooden stick (like I normally would). No. The heat melts everything very quickly. I looked over at Victor and he was eating his upside down, stick up; popsicle still in the bag. He was like “I was going to tell you but you unwrapped it too fast” 🤣🤦🏻♀️
Bring some wipes.

We just had the most wonderful experience today with our tour guide, Abbey, from Eating with Carmen Food Tour! We had several different delicious food stops, learned the history of Playa Del Carmen, and enjoyed seeing all the different art work that adorns the walls of both abandoned and newly constructed buildings throughout Playa. Would highly recommend this food tour. We did the lunch tour that started promptly at 10 am and lasted until about 1230-100 pm. Perfect amount of time! Thank you Abbey and thank you Eating with Carmen!

My husband and I visited Playa del Carmen for our anniversary this month (June 2021). We've been to Mexico several times before and have stayed at all-inclusive resorts and knew that this time around we wanted to see and experience more of the surrounding area and get a sense for what Playa del Carmen is like outside of the walls of the hotel.
Going on a food tour with Eating with Carmen was the PERFECT way to do this! We loved our guide, Alex, and felt as though the information he shared with us was unique and interesting and, most importantly, the food was incredible!! We would never have found these spots on our own. The tour really gave us a view of the city itself that would be difficult to get on our own — local restaurants and less touristy areas of town.
The tour is for everyone, whether you're adventurous and want to try unique taco ingredients or if you want to stick with the basics. If you're on the fence about booking this tour, JUST DO IT! :)

The first question that our guide, Juan, from Eating With Carmen Food Tour, asked was "Do you want the regular tour or do you want to be surprised?" We all immediately responded with "Surprise!" And surprised we were by not knowing what we would experience next. The tour included not only sampling some new and unusual foods (tacos of fried tripe, horchata, sopes, fruit popsicles and more) but included history of the area, information about all the street murals, meeting the restaurant owners, and learning some customs like people wishing all the restaurant patrons a "buen provecho" as they leave. We visited a fruit market and identified all the different tropical fruits and vegetables, learned about the achiote paste that is used to make cochinita pibil which is native to the Yucatan. Our time with Juan was a wonderful culinary, cultural and stimulating 3 hours for all the senses!

Pro: Juan was a very informative and friendly guide and took us to restaurants that we most likely would not have tried without his recommendation. The food was great and there was plenty of it. The tour gave us an insiders glimpse of Playa Del Carmen and was well worth the time and money. Con: Be prepared to walk quite a ways to get to all of the stops on the tour.

My wife and I met our tour guide Victor and were immediately greeted with a bottle of local water which looked disgusting but tasted great.
Victor took us to the first stop on the tour where we ate some delicious quesadillas, before he pulled out more treats from his bag like a Mexican Mary Poppins. This time it was some tasty tamales which were very filling, so we decided not to finish all of them.
Next on the tour was a small stop for some enchiladas. Victor was very knowledgeable about the area and about the food we were sampling, explaining the different ingredients and techniques in creating the dishes.
Victor then took us to a fruit and veg market where we bought some delicious fruit juice before taking us for the finest tacos we have ever eaten.
After that we were taken on to Juarez where we had Lebanese style tacos (where I also sampled the spiciest salsa known to man) before we had some very tasty popsicles for desert.
The beauty of this tour along with the incredible food we were eating was the conversations with Victor about Mexico and specifically the area of the Playa del Carmen. He was very insightful and explained a great deal about the history of the land as well as the street art. It was a superb tour with a great host and I highly recommend it if you are interested in the finest Mexican cuisine.

How far is this from Riviera Maya? I’d like to book but want to make sure it’s not too far for transportation

I would personally double check on a map with your exact location, but a quick Google search claims about a 20 min. drive from Riviera Maya to Playa del Carmen.

I walk with a cane. Is the tour route on smooth walking surface or is it rough? How many food stops do you have? Is there any seafood/fish served? Is the food very spicy? What kind of beverages are provided?
Written April 24, 2022
If you walk with a can I seriously wouldn’t do this. It’s pretty long and on some uneven and cracked pavement. The food is mostly pork and chicken and the spice is added after, so you are in control of it.
