This visit was absolutely worth it!
Rio Secreto is located near Playa del Carmen and about 1 hour drive from Cancun’s hotel zone. It’s a straight shot down the 307 and if you’re renting a car, you can go yourself, rather than booking a tour. We drove here and paid for the tour at their ticket office.
Rio Secreto is a semi-flooded limestone cave system filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The tour is filled with wonderfully picturesque sights and the guide Victor was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They supply you with equipment (spelunking helmet, life jacket, wet suit, shoes and an optional cane, which I recommend you take), and lockers to keep your stuff safe while you are on your tour.
The cave system was only discovered in 2004 and has about 38 kilometers (24 miles) of caves in the system and about 10% are used for ecotourism.
You’re not allowed to take any cameras or photographic equipment, but a photographer accompanies your tour. They give you the option to buy a digital copy of the photos: $99 for all the photos, which include about 40 photos taken of your tour and about another 40 photos taken of the caves and the wildlife. You have the option to buy individual photos for $24, but I’d recommend the whole package. That comes out to about $1.25 per picture.
I saw that most people who gave this a low score was because of the price of the photos. This is a once in a lifetime experience in a private cave system. The price is not exorbitant compared to the costs of many attractions in the Cancun area. The tour lasted several hours and a meal was served at the end as well. If you don’t think that it’s worth it, don’t go, but you’ll be missing out on an incredible experience.

Amazing experience!!! I’m a geologist from a region in Brazil with many caves and I was absolutely stupefied with such beauty!!!
I would prefer more independence for exploring, but I totally understand the idea of taking very good care of the visitors, since this is a real cave and people have to really watch where they are going.
Our guide, Nunes, was GREAT! Gave the your in both Spanish and English. He kept talking to us in Portuguese, even though we said it wasn’t necessary. Really nice guy! And knows a lot!

They don’t allow cameras inside, which I totally understand! There is a designated photographer with us all the time…but paying 25USD per photo os waaay too much!!!

By far, the best activity or excursion you can do when on vacay here. We went on a day we knew it would be rainy and it was perfect. We also did the Plus package which is a great deal—rappelling part wasn’t scary like many think. We had Cassandra as tour guide and she was superb, excellent English and a real sweet personality.

Our guide was amazing. However the bike ride advertised was nothing compared to what we received. We rode on a dirt road and not in a cave at all. The repelling was a fun experience but was a quick turn back up the stairs for a bike ride back. The swimming portion was very refreshing and we loved this portion of the tour. The food was fair at the end. A very frustrating portion of this excursion was that we were not allowed our phones or recording devices at all. At the end we were offered our pictures and to pay $100 USD for the pictures in which we’re not super high quality photos. A lot of our pictures taken were blurry. So we have nothing to take home to our children to show how cool it was to repel and swim in a cave. Overall the experience was fair but nothing compared to what is advertised. See picture below.

I highly recommend doing this tour. Out of all the tours we did on our trip, this one was the best. Luckily we had a small group and a great guide, Angel.

The tour was better than imagined, and Angel gave great instructions on how to stay safe throughout the cave. They give you everything you need to experience the beauty of the underground river! I recommend paying for the photos at the end, we had a great photographer who got some great shots!

AMAZING! What a beautiful sight to see. I promise you will not be disappointed. Cesi was our guid and she was wonderful. From the moment she introduced herself to the very end when she had to leave to host another group she was very professional, good spirited, funny, and very informative/knowledgeable. Words cannot describe how beautiful these caves are. The nature of it all… from the bats to the millions of years of natural formation is just breathtaking. My soon to be 4 year old enjoyed herself but halfway through she was freezing. The water is cool and refreshing especially after hiking to the cave in the hot sun but for my skinny toddler she did get cold. I wish I could remember the photographers name, he did a great job capturing this experience. At the end we were treated to a shot and a buffet meal (nothing fancy just basic fruits, salad, pasta a meat option and rice and beans). Overall I would recommend Rio Secreto to anyone visiting the Quintana Roo area.

Nunes was an awesome tour guide! He really knew his facts about the cave system. He kept us all safe by explaining exactly where to step and he helped my two kiddos who didn't know how to swim through the swimming portions. The meditation experience was extremely peaceful. We had a fantastic tour!

Unfortunately, our experience at Rio Secreto landed well below expectations. Our resort suggested this as a great opportunity to see something local and cool and suggested the Plus option because we wanted a little extra excitement with the biking.

We were driven to Rio Secreto in a van and arrived around 10:05 to the destination. From there, we sat for about 10 minutes and waited. Then, they played safety video in Spanish and then again in English. We then saw other groups depart and we continued to wait. Apparently for other people to arrive to make our tour larger. We ended up just standing around and waiting to leave for about 30 minutes. Then, we were driven ~15 minutes into the jungle. Once we arrived, we waited even longer because all of the staff was disorganized — it’s like they didn’t know where we were supposed to go. We locked our stuff up and walked to the bikes. We biked for maybe 3 minutes to a rappelling area and got suited up. One by one we rappelled down to a cave and stood there and waited for everyone else. Nothing to do except stand and wait. There was one 7 year old on our tour who also was horrible and just screamed the whole time— so we had to stand and wait for this kid to decide whether or not he wanted to rappel. Combined with nonstop screaming and crying.

When we finally got back, we went into the dry cave and then the wet cave. These were cool — worth the experience. The caves are pretty remarkable. Once we swam for about 1.5 hours in the wet cave, we got out and went to eat lunch.

Overall our tour took us about 9 hours including transportation and I think about 6 of those hours were being transported and waiting (our hotel was only ~20 minutes away for reference). This is not a good use of time. And the Plus version is not worth the extra charge — skip it.

Also, no phones and no pictures. So they want you to buy all of theirs. Fine. But it got too excessive posing and waiting for all the photos …

This is one of the best excursions I've been on. The caves were gorgeous and the staff were incredible. The food provided at the end was pretty good as well.

I want to emphasize that this area is a nature preserve first and tourist attraction second. That being said, while the prices of things such as the photos are expensive, know that much of that money is going back into the preserve and funding projects and digs within and around the caves.

Pablo was our guide and he was absolutely amazing. The staff all refer to their guests as "familia" or family, but he really took it to heart in every interaction with us. Additionally, you could tell how much he loved to work there and that he was enthusiastic about the work the preserve did.
