Sofia was such an outstanding host, guide and chef! I didn’t realize how at home I would feel and how authentic the experience felt. Everything from going to Sofia’s local market and purchasing in-season fresh produce to cook, to being in her home kitchen prepping a meal fit for royalty. Can’t wait to bring my parents to visit and show them the local cuisine from the artist herself. Thank you Sofia!!

Sofia is the ultimate hostess and teacher. We are a senior couple who love to cook and have taken classes all over the world. Sofia’s was hands down the best ever. She approaches her classes as if you know little to nothing about cooking. She also teaches you about presentation. Sofia gave us loads of information about the area and history and how it relates to the dishes we prepared. As well, she happily accommodated our request about one dish we really wanted to learn. Every dish we learned and prepared was absolutely delicious as well as beautiful. The next time we’re in Merida we’ll surely book another class with Sofia.

I did the home cooked meal at Sofia’s (I think most people do the cooking class too, but I didn’t have time so just did the dinner). Sofia was a gracious and welcoming hostess. She cooked so much food, with 4 courses with horchata and beer. She went out of her way to make it a memorable and enjoyable experience, texting me in advance asking me what options I would like (I let her choose) and making an extra course. The dinner itself was very friendly and convivial (even though it was only me and Sofia’s cousin). Sofia speaks great English and is happy to answer any questions and give a lot of history, as well as recommendations and guidance. And the food is great!

What a wonderful day! Sophia took us on a walk to the local markets, pointing out various foods, what we should look for, which to choose. We learnt some of the history of the Yucatan and the way it relates to the food. Once back in Sophia's kitchen, we prepared a vast array of dishes, learning lots of special tricks along the way. Sophia knew we were interested in the Festival de las Animas and so she designed a traditional menu around this idea. It was fantastic that we learnt to use the ingredients in so many different ways. A truly great day and we highly recommend Sofia's experience.

We learned a lot preparing many traditional Yucatecan dishes together with Sofia, as part of the cooking class. We were warned it might be hot in the kitchen during summer, but Sofia kept things comfortable with open windows and cool drinks! She was very accommodating of dietary requests, you will just want to specify them very clearly in advance. She taught us about many ingredients native to the area and the differences between the local cuisine and dishes from other regions of Mexico!

I absolutely loved my day with Sofia. I was the only one so it was a private class. She showed me many fruits and vegs that I never saw before in the market. She is a passionate cooker loving to share her knowledge. I appreciated that she showed every steps of cooking before I do it myself, as well as her anecdotes and stories. I booked a local dinner at Sofia’s place in Merida (Casa Casellas) and it was amazing! The food was delicious and Sofia was a great hostess. The ambiance of having dinner in her garden and speaking Spanish was very nice. I would definitely recommend.

We really enjoyed cooking with Sofia! She is a lovely person and an excellent cook. We learned a lot from her and prepared many different dishes. The food was simply excellent and I will cook it for sure at home! She also tells a lot about the authentic food and Mayan history, which was very interesting. I would definitely recommend the cooking session with Sofia! It’s an authentic Yucatecan experience!

We had a wonderful day cooking and drinking with Sofia! We did a multi city trip around the Yucatán peninsula and the cooking class/market was one of our top highlights, and served as a great contrast to your traditional “activities.” We are far from compentent cooks, but Sofia guided us the whole way and it was an absolute fun and relaxed time. Highly highly recommend!

Sofia is a wonderful host. She had several tasty Yucatecan treats for us to sample as she took us through the menu and taught us about the key ingredients we would be using for the meal. She is very knowledgable of her craft and gives clear, direct instructions. The home is warm and inviting and the kitchen well-equipped. My partner and I had the opportunity to make several dishes such as empanadas with chaya leaf, relleno negro, sikil pak (a tomato and ground pumpkin seed based dip), and the most phenomenal habenaro-infused tomato sauce. The food was delicious and we would recommend Sofia's class to anyone hoping to learn and try beautiful Yucatan dishes!

Sofia was a wonderful host and teacher. She's in warm, thoughtful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend taking this class. You will learn about Mayan cooking, have a great time with Sofia, and eat some wonderful food!

We (family with 2 children - age 10 and 12) had a superb day with Daniel and Julieta: the visit to the market and the cooking and eating in the lovely house of Julieta. Learned a lot about the Yucatan cuisine and the food was delicious. I would really recommend this tour to anyone who likes to do something different then the 'usual tourist activities'. Especially for families with children/teens I can recommend it. Our girls really enjoyed it: they learned a lot about fruits, herbs and veggies at the market and now they know how to make a perfect guacemole and banana empanadas!! Our instructor Sofia picked us up at our hotel in Merida and took us to the big market here. It was very interesting seeing so many new fruits and veggies we don't have in the USA! Afterwards we cooked up several dishes at her house. Sofia is extremely knowledgeable on Yucatecan cuisine. She had so many great tips. Afterwards we all sat down at a lovely table she had prepared and dined on what we had prepared. Superb! Such a treat. Sofia is delightful and warm. Great experience!!
