- 79gavinf0 contributionsBetter than Airbnb!Sofia was such an outstanding host, guide and chef! I didn’t realize how at home I would feel and how authentic the experience felt. Everything from going to Sofia’s local market and purchasing in-season fresh produce to cook, to being in her home kitchen prepping a meal fit for royalty. Can’t wait to bring my parents to visit and show them the local cuisine from the artist herself. Thank you Sofia!!Written February 21, 2024
- Tennesseelawyer0 contributionsThe best cooking class ever!Sofia is the ultimate hostess and teacher. We are a senior couple who love to cook and have taken classes all over the world. Sofia’s was hands down the best ever. She approaches her classes as if you know little to nothing about cooking. She also teaches you about presentation. Sofia gave us loads of information about the area and history and how it relates to the dishes we prepared. As well, she happily accommodated our request about one dish we really wanted to learn. Every dish we learned and prepared was absolutely delicious as well as beautiful. The next time we’re in Merida we’ll surely book another class with Sofia.Written February 12, 2024
- Txikis0 contributionsA great local experience! It was a great experience, Sofía is a great host, we learnt a lot about Yucatecan food & culture. Gracias Sofía por tu hospitalidad y buen hacer. Un abrazo!Written August 31, 2023
- RS070300 contributionsFantastic alternative experienceI did the home cooked meal at Sofia’s (I think most people do the cooking class too, but I didn’t have time so just did the dinner). Sofia was a gracious and welcoming hostess. She cooked so much food, with 4 courses with horchata and beer. She went out of her way to make it a memorable and enjoyable experience, texting me in advance asking me what options I would like (I let her choose) and making an extra course. The dinner itself was very friendly and convivial (even though it was only me and Sofia’s cousin). Sofia speaks great English and is happy to answer any questions and give a lot of history, as well as recommendations and guidance. And the food is great!Written May 28, 2023
- writer19110 contributionsExceeded all ExpectationsWhat a wonderful day! Sophia took us on a walk to the local markets, pointing out various foods, what we should look for, which to choose. We learnt some of the history of the Yucatan and the way it relates to the food. Once back in Sophia's kitchen, we prepared a vast array of dishes, learning lots of special tricks along the way. Sophia knew we were interested in the Festival de las Animas and so she designed a traditional menu around this idea. It was fantastic that we learnt to use the ingredients in so many different ways. A truly great day and we highly recommend Sofia's experience.Written October 26, 2022
- kaylamarieoneill0 contributionsAuthentic Yucatecan flavorsWe learned a lot preparing many traditional Yucatecan dishes together with Sofia, as part of the cooking class. We were warned it might be hot in the kitchen during summer, but Sofia kept things comfortable with open windows and cool drinks! She was very accommodating of dietary requests, you will just want to specify them very clearly in advance. She taught us about many ingredients native to the area and the differences between the local cuisine and dishes from other regions of Mexico!Written May 14, 2022
- 865amandinea0 contributionsAmazing experienceI absolutely loved my day with Sofia. I was the only one so it was a private class. She showed me many fruits and vegs that I never saw before in the market. She is a passionate cooker loving to share her knowledge. I appreciated that she showed every steps of cooking before I do it myself, as well as her anecdotes and stories. The food was delicious and we had the Opportunity to talk of many things. I definitely recommend this experience, can’t wait to try all the recipes at home! Thank you SofiaWritten March 28, 2022
- hello7170 contributionsAmazing experienceI booked a local dinner at Sofia’s place in Merida (Casa Casellas) and it was amazing! The food was delicious and Sofia was a great hostess. The ambiance of having dinner in her garden and speaking Spanish was very nice. I would definitely recommend.Written March 20, 2022
- Sarahke2250 contributionsExcellent authentic cooking sessionWe really enjoyed cooking with Sofia! She is a lovely person and an excellent cook. We learned a lot from her and prepared many different dishes. The food was simply excellent and I will cook it for sure at home! She also tells a lot about the authentic food and Mayan history, which was very interesting. I would definitely recommend the cooking session with Sofia! It’s an authentic Yucatecan experience!Written March 13, 2022
- kristinad9590 contributionsTop Highlight of TripWe had a wonderful day cooking and drinking with Sofia! We did a multi city trip around the Yucatán peninsula and the cooking class/market was one of our top highlights, and served as a great contrast to your traditional “activities.” We are far from compentent cooks, but Sofia guided us the whole way and it was an absolute fun and relaxed time. Highly highly recommend!Written March 10, 2022
- Z1185VIsallya0 contributionsInformative and TastySofia is a wonderful host. She had several tasty Yucatecan treats for us to sample as she took us through the menu and taught us about the key ingredients we would be using for the meal. She is very knowledgable of her craft and gives clear, direct instructions. The home is warm and inviting and the kitchen well-equipped. My partner and I had the opportunity to make several dishes such as empanadas with chaya leaf, relleno negro, sikil pak (a tomato and ground pumpkin seed based dip), and the most phenomenal habenaro-infused tomato sauce. The food was delicious and we would recommend Sofia's class to anyone hoping to learn and try beautiful Yucatan dishes!Written February 26, 2022

- HannekeJanssen0 contributionsGreat experience!!!We (family with 2 children - age 10 and 12) had a superb day with Daniel and Julieta: the visit to the market and the cooking and eating in the lovely house of Julieta. Learned a lot about the Yucatan cuisine and the food was delicious. I would really recommend this tour to anyone who likes to do something different then the 'usual tourist activities'. Especially for families with children/teens I can recommend it. Our girls really enjoyed it: they learned a lot about fruits, herbs and veggies at the market and now they know how to make a perfect guacemole and banana empanadas!! Thanks again Daniel and Julieta!!Written May 6, 2019
- TravelingWieners0 contributionsWONDERFUL YUCATECAN COOKING ADVENTUREOur instructor Sofia picked us up at our hotel in Merida and took us to the big market here. It was very interesting seeing so many new fruits and veggies we don't have in the USA! Afterwards we cooked up several dishes at her house. Sofia is extremely knowledgeable on Yucatecan cuisine. She had so many great tips. Afterwards we all sat down at a lovely table she had prepared and dined on what we had prepared. Superb! Such a treat. Sofia is delightful and warm. Great experience!!Written March 17, 2019

The six of us spent the day with Sophia and experienced authentic Yucatecan cooking, from shopping in the beautiful local Mexican market to preparing 7 wonderful dishes in her home. Sophia is a joy, English is good and she prepares recipes passed down from generations. We all left with a new appreciation of Yucatecan tradition, some family history and printed recipes. Gracias Sophia.

My mom and I had the most amazing time cooking with Sofia in her beautiful home. Exceeded all of our expectations. We could’ve spent all night talking to Sofia about her life and the culture and gastronomy of Mérida. Our lesson was extremely thorough and we have never before had a meal cooked with so much love and passion. Cooking with Sofia has been the highlight of my trip and everyone MUST do this when traveling to the Yucatán.

I’ve done a handful of travelingspoon cooking options but one hands out stand out above the rest. Sofia was a gracious hostess, she provided us with options for the menu, the dishes were delicious and she provided photo and recipes after our session so we could replicate at home. She shares the heritage of her family’s cooking and geopolitical migrations, sharing tips and technique that I as an experienced cook found exceptional. Making the dishes in a real home kitchen rather than a restaurant-like setting ensured that what we learned and cooked will be replicated when return home. This meal was the best we had in the Yucatan and we ate at many fine restaurants throughout our stay. She attended to every detail: hands on cooking experience, reveal and practice of techniques, food and kitchen sanitation exceptional (i have a food handling certificate for volunteer work I do and she hit every box). Plus seeing a non-tourist laden part of Merida was wonderful. Her tips and lore about Mercado shopping added to my comfort level of navigating through any Mercado — and they are places I love and frequent. Highly recommend!

Sophia gave us a good, clear, and well-organized lesson. We simultaneously prepared a set of dishes and always knew where we were and what we were doing. As another reviewer said, Sophia was passionate about food. We would add that she was passionate about people, engaging on a personal level rather than simply showing us how to do what.

We spent a fabulous day in Sophia's house, cooking together as a family with our 21 and 22 years children. It was a highlight of our holiday in Mexico. Sophia is a wonderful hostess with a huge energy and a passion for the Mayan culture. We learned about the Yucatan way of life, we tried fruit and vegetables that we had never heard of before and after all our hard work we shared a truly delicious meal together. I strongly recommend the experience, thank you Sophia!

My husband and I had a fantastic cooking and learning experience with Sofia. She warmly welcomed us in to her home and guided us step by step with clear instructions and methods during this hands on culinary adventure. We washed, peeled, roasted, chopped, diced and mashed our way to a delicious Yucatán feast. Sofia put us both right to work while sharing her knowledge and history of Mayan foods and preparations. We learned quite a bit and were rewarded at the finish with a delicious meal at a beautifully set table. We feasted on Pollo Pibil, Calabaza Frita, Guacamole, Yucatán beer, and much more. We barely had room for the Mango Mousse but somehow we managed! Anyone looking for an “up close and personal” cooking class, this is it!

Absolut best culinary school I've been to - and it has been a few! It turned put to be a privatr 1:1 teaching and I am so glad it wasn't cancelled since I was the only one. We covered a lot of dishes, all the spices and veggies were well explained, there were a lot of beverages to try as well. My host was incredibly attentive, funny, nice to talk to and the hygienic conditions were superb! It was a perfect day and I would recommend it 100% - don't miss it!

Definitely fantastic given the reviews, if you can go! We wanted to go on Saturday but it was full. We extended our stay to book on Sunday. You are on hold until the last minute and you are refused by stupidly returning the payment. It lacks respect.

We were welcomed to Sofia's house and got to prepare a 6-course Yucatanean meal working hands-on with her. She is a very good cook and has years of teaching cooking experiences and credentials. She really knows her chilies and we learned a lot abut her techniques. She gave us ingredient substitution ideas and cooking tips on everything that my girlfriend and I did not know. She tolerated our spanglish and we enjoyed eating the meal with her. It is a 20 minute ride from the center of town to her home in the north part of Merida. We are looking forward to next visit to learn how to make Sopa de Lima.

Anyone interested in Yucatecan cuisine should have the experience of cooking with Sofia. We thoroughly enjoyed our time learning about the regional food, drinks, customs and eating some delicious dishes. Sofia was a great host - very welcoming, patient and knowledgeable. The time went by so quickly as we were having such a good time. The food we cooked was amazing and everything was delicious. Even my husband who can be a picky eater loved it all. Can't wait to try the recipes at home, especially that tomato sauce! Wow...highly recommend.
