Alejandro Is the Bomb!
This was a first class experience and gave us a personal cooking class. We wanted to see what the community and culture was like in Merida and Alejandro did an excellent job of doing just that. He was charming and kind and taught us so many new things about the food and culture. We got to taste things at the market and then go back to cook them all into a delicious traditional Yucatecan meal. We never felt awkward or out of place. My wife, daughter, and I recommend this experience to anyone who wants to learn the real Mérida Life.

Great guide , amazing chef
Jun 2021
Iveth is such an amazing guide! She escorted us twice and I can't say enough good things about her as well as the market tour an d cooking experience. She explained things thoroughly and encouraged questions. The local chef was as sweet as as your mother or grandmother and we had an incredible meal as we made new friends. This was such an incredible experience!

Once in a lifetime experience!
Jun 2021 • Couples
We walked through Merida with our fantastic guide Alejandro, who explained the various products in the market in great detail. We then visited Leonorres home, where she guided us through making a meal with the items purchased. This experience was: AMAZING. Alejandro met up with us speaking VERY good English, and taught us a good deal about the markets and food customs here in Mexico. Leonorre was darling, and kind enough to serve drinks, show us how to make the food, and treated us to a DELICIOUS meal. Alejandro helped us find transportation home at the end, and overall it was a fabulous experience. 10/10, would recommend!

Must-do in Merida!!
May 2021
This cooking class is a must-do and has certainly been a highlight of our trip! Our super kind tour guide Alejandro showed us all different types of fruits and vegetables on a local market, which is a great experience itself already. We then prepared our yummie dishes in Senora Leonora's home - so much fun and kind Mexican hospitality. We loved every minute, absolutely recommend the trip and will surely come back!

DON'T LEAVE MERIDA WITHOUT BOOKING THIS COOKING CLASS!
Oct 2020
DO NOT LEAVE MERIDA WITHOUT DOING THIS COOKING CLASS! I've traversed the globe as a travel writer and freelance journalist, and, well, we all know how that stopped in 2020. Craving a little travel, I took a small jaunt to Merida, as it's just a two-hour non-stop flight from Miami, and I read that Merida citizens take Covid seriously, wear masks, take everyone's temperatures when entering stores, sanitize shops, etc. I can confirm this is all true. We booked this cooking class not knowing what to expect and I AM SO GLAD WE DID. Alejandro rounded the corner and met us at an open-air plaza, mask-on, and explained how the day would run -- first a visit to markets to select all the ingredients for the cooking class, then an Uber ride (two ubers to safely accommodate four of us) to a local woman's house for the class. ALL OF IT was BEYOND FUN to have a guide like Alejandro to lead us through market selections, explaining local ingredients (spices, vegetables, tortillas, etc), where they were sourced, how they were used, the history of local dishes, how they became popular - he is a fountain of information. The spice sellers explained spices we've never seen, how/where they're grown, how they're used and in what dishes. Everyone takes their time. Alejandro's English is perfect, so if you prefer English to Spanish, he's your man. The woman in whose house we cooked opened up her home as if we were long-lost relatives. Under her tutelage, we happily cut, chopped, mixed and blended our way to the most delicious lunch around a beautiful table with such camaraderie, anyone who has missed family dinners during the pandemic will feel an overwhelming sense of joy and companionship. This is a magical day, as you walk El Centro in Merida to a couple of markets, select vegetables and spices, and finally, cook at a local's house, all under the congenial guidance of the exuberant guide, Alejandro, who clearly loves what he does. Seriously, don't leave Merida without experiencing this class. You're enriching your heart and your palate, helping the local economy, making indelible memories, and gaining insight into local cuisine you likely otherwise wouldn't. Oh - and BONUS -- Alejandro emails you a PHENOMENAL RECIPE BOOK after the class so you can purchase spices before you leave and continue the fun at home. Truly, this is one of the best experiential tours I've taken in a long time.

Excellent experience!
Jan 2020
My husband,I and three friends enjoyed a wonderful couple of hours with Alejandro at Mérida’s Lucas de Galvez Mercado. After giving an overview of the market, Alejandro guided us smoothly and gave clear, detailed explanations as we shopped in the many sections of the busy market An important distinction was made between the local food vendors at the beginning of the food market and the inner produce sections with food from other parts of México. Transportation from the market was a short ride on the local city bus (only 7 pesos for each paid by Alejandro). Our cooking lesson was in a private home close to Passeo de Montejo. The owner and cook, Mercedes. was an excellent guide for the preparation of a delicious meal! An prepaid Uber was ordered for the return to our lodging.

Not just for foodies!
Dec 2019
Echoing what other reviewers have said: A real pleasure, and not just for foodies. Food is life - so you'll learn a lot about living in Mérida and Yucatán, in addition to cooking and enjoying a great meal. We wish we had done it earlier in our stay!

- A solid, professionally run tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, personable, and enthusiastic. Very strong English language skills and great group leadership.
Information about what we'd be doing, how to stay together, how we'd be travelling to different areas and so on was clearly communicated in advance and throughout the tour.
- You will be on your feet and moving for a few hours, but it's well paced with a few breaks and is mostly inside in the shade. The market itself is relatively cool.
- The market is pretty busy and crowded. If you have specific accessibility concerns, I'd recommend contacting the Adventues Mexico (the tour operator) to discuss the itinerary. They may well be able to adjust something for you.
- Same goes if you have diet restrictions or preferences - there's a LOT of food options and the "menu" can be adjusted. Our guide discussed this with everyone in the group at the start of the day.
- The tour price includes all the ingredients that you'll cook with, as well as a refreshing beverage on the tour, bus fare, and the uber back downtown. The guide has the shopping list based on the food preferences/restrictions of the group. (The vendors we stopped at were clearly familiar with the guide and were very generous with their time).
- Remember to bring some cash, because you might also want to pick up a couple of things on the tour (e.g. we bought a bottle of that really delicious liqueur that they make in Yucatán from honey and anise.) The guide will help you with these purchases if your Spanish is not all it could be (:>)
- You'll cook and enjoy the meal as a guest in someone's home. We were really made to feel welcome.
- You may want to go back to the market because there are a lot of things in there besides food. Shoes and shoe repair. Like direct from the factory, in the sense that the guys are cutting the leather right there. And some really cool hardware stalls.

Great day at with Edgar

We had a great day discovering the cuisine of Yucatán!
It was a wonderful experience walking through the local food market with Edgar and learning about the local vegetables, herbs and fruits. Many thanks to Edgar’s aunt for having us at her house and letting us cook traditional Yucatán food.

Fantastic Merida market and cooking adventure!
This was a fantastic experience. In Merida with our family of five and decided to learn about local cuisine. Alejandro our guide was superb. Very knowledgeable, personable and passionate about what he does and very caring about his clients. He was also very fun to be with. Can’t say enough good things about him.

Our tour of the large market was great with lots of opportunities to taste and learn and meet local people. We then brought our food purchases to the home of Mercedes who guided us through the preparation of a most wonderful lunch.

Overall a great experience and a wonderful introduction to a “day in the life” of a Yucatán resident.

Thank you Alejandro and thank you for sending us the recipes!
