I highly recommend this experience as a way to explore the culture and interact with some local women. We had a great time going to the market with Iveth and learning about the various ingredients and history of the food...and then making the food with Rosario in her home. We were a group of ten women celebrating a special birthday. Rosario figured out a way for us to make cochinita pibil during the class because I really really wanted to make this (It traditionally takes a lot longer to make) and then surprised me with a special cake that we made in the class in addition to the mango cream dessert. The chaya empanadas and panuchos were excellent!

We loved Pamela's informative tour around a local market where we got to see a different side of the city. It was so interesting seeing all the products being sold and the wide variety of spices and sauces from the Yucatan. Afterwards, Pamela brought us to her family home and introduced us to her family and their dog. We had a great time cooking and tasting different Yucatec recipes. Most of our group was vegan, and Pamela accommodated us by offering alternative recipes that had no animal ingredients.

Iveth Campos was our guide and she was DELIGHTFUL! She had to herd 10 gabbing women of a certain age and did it flawlessly and with great humor.
The Market Visit with Iveth was so interesting. I would do just a market tour again with Iveth, only take more time. There is just so much to see and learn.
Finally our cooking class at Rosario's home was just INCREDIBLE! We were 10 women, gabbing away - supposedly 'helping' Rosario, who was calm and kind and so competent - what a chef she is! And somehow, in spite of all of our inexperienced hands, we together made a wonderful meal. We were stuffed!
I highly recommend this experience! It was the highlight of my week in Merida.

Pamela was INCREDIBLE! Our family had a memorable and special experience cooking along with Pamela's lovely family. Her mother and grandmother welcomed all of us into their home after a fun-filled trip to the market. At the market, we purchased ingredients, met local vendors, and received information about local history and products. Our kids loved spending time in the kitchen, interacting with the the host family, chopping onions, stirring salsas, frying tortillas and blending sauces. We made a delicious feast and then ate together as a group, sharing stories in both Spanish and English. Pamela is a gracious, kind, welcoming, and lovely host. We felt comfortable, welcome, safe and taken care of- it was life being among family. We will never forget this wonderful and enriching experience. Thank you to Pamela and her wonderful family for sharing your kitchen and your recipes with us!

My husband,I and three friends enjoyed a wonderful couple of hours with Alejandro at Mérida’s Lucas de Galvez Mercado. After giving an overview of the market, Alejandro guided us smoothly and gave clear, detailed explanations as we shopped in the many sections of the busy market An important distinction was made between the local food vendors at the beginning of the food market and the inner produce sections with food from other parts of México. Transportation from the market was a short ride on the local city bus (only 7 pesos for each paid by Alejandro). Our cooking lesson was in a private home close to Passeo de Montejo. The owner and cook, Mercedes. was an excellent guide for the preparation of a delicious meal! An prepaid Uber was ordered for the return to our lodging.

OMG you have to do this. You meet with a tour guide, walk and safely shop for the groceries through the market for the lunch and then take public transportation with the guide to the host's home. Joining a local family and participating in prepping for a few Mexican dishes while practicing your Spanish and asking all about the culture, local real estate and economy is not your typical tour. It was amazing. Relatives were coming and going (like a typical Mexican family home) and we were kept busy cutting and prepping and even cooking. You get private transportation back to the meeting point. When we left we had such a warm, welcome feeling like it was an experience we could never recreate.

Our guide Pamela was charming. We really enjoyed our walk through the market experience and her insight on local food as we purchased the ingredients for our meal. Learning about locally produced masa will change the way I think about tortillas. It was delicious and very different from any other we’ve had.
The hands on in-home cooking experience was very authentic and we especially enjoyed her Abuelita who helped with the cooking and made us feel welcomed.
We would love to have the recipes for the food we prepared.
Highly recommend this.

This was an excellent tour. Pamela was a fantastic tour guide. She guided us through the market expertly and because she is a local knew many of the people there. She was so friendly and knowledgeable. Pamela then took us to Dorcas’ house to cook. Dorcas was also very friendly and accommodating. We had a lot of fun cooking and the food was amazing. We really appreciated learning about and how to make unique local dishes from the Yucatan Mayan culture. Zikil Pak was one of the most interesting and flavorful dishes I have had on my trip. I have been craving it everyday since then. Highly recommend this tour and cooking class.

I enjoyed everything about this tour, but going to the market and seeing Kevin, our guide, interact with his favorite venders was particularly helpful. The venders offered us samples and information that we would not otherwise have had at the market.
The cooking part of the tour was fun, as we worked with Leonora, chopping and stirring and preparing the dishes we would enjoy. She was a delightful hostess in her home and a gracious teacher, helping us to learn some new techniques and tools for preparing the cuisine of Yucatan. We prepared and enjoyed eating four different dishes -- a perfect lunch.
Kevin Gonzalez was our guide and he was a real delight. He met us as planned and was very helpful for another student who had difficulty getting to the meeting place. I appreciated his efforts to make the tour a great experience for all of us.
I recommend this tour for anyone who wants to know more about the cuisine of Yucatan and the influence of the Mayan culture.

We booked the cooking class because we like the Yucatecan cuisine very much and wanted to learn more about ingredients and preparation on site. A special highlight was walking with our guide Marisol through the market with all the fresh and beautifully presented fruits and vegetables. Marisol invited us to taste freshly prepared snacks at several stations. Afterwards we drove to a private house, where the friendly woman who lived there explained to us how to prepare a small, delicious 3-course meal from the ingredients we had brought with us. Everything tasted wonderful! Marisol did a great job and it was a lot of fun for my husband and me. We will definitely try to cook some of the dishes at home.

The five hours includes time at the mercado and then travel back to the kitchen for the cooking portion. We made four or five dishes -- a mole, guacamole, soup, and a couple other things I don't recall at the moment.
I thought it sounded like a long time before we went, but I enjoyed the leisurely pace, enjoying meeting vendors in the market and eating our lunch together.

Can you provide some information about the teacher(s)? What is the maximum number of participants?
Thank you…

The class is held in the home of a local cook. This is not a professional chef, teaching cooking technique, but more like an abuela inviting you into her kitchen to learn the dishes she's prepared her whole life. Attendees help with chopping, peeling and mixing, as she prepares the meal. The tour company provides a cookbook following the class so you have the methods and ingredients to prepare the dishes at home.
I don't recall the maximum number of students but it's a small group. In our case, it was three of us, the guide and the cook.

Would love to know what a typical menu would be for this. This is hands on where we prepare and cook? Are we required to wear a mask while prep/cook?

We are interested in this but my husband is allergic to onions. Will there be food without onions? Just curious. We love Mexicam food and Mexico

I’m sure if you asked, it would be omitted. The guacamole I made had onions but you could easily make a small amount without. I don’t recall any other menu item having onions
