- Josue C00Ancient CocoaWhile on cruise, I took an excursion that included a tour of the Mayan Cocoa Company, and really enjoyed the tour. The folks that worked in the facility were very, excited to show us the process of how chocolate is made. There are exhibits on how its harvested, processed, and used in Mayan culture. There is a mock kitchen, where one the guides makes a sauce using a stone press, then they pass it around for us to try, it was a bit lumpy but tasted pretty good. They also house a few macaws (parrots) around area, asking to be photographed. The guides were very passionate, explaining and answering questions. Overall, this was a good experience, one I recommend for anybody with young kids, history buffs, or a sweet tooth.
- sfbayarea81800Super fun and educational! We did our tour with Roberto who is very passionate about providing the history of chocolate how the culture of the Mayans has been integrated throughout the region. You'll learn about the native plants as you make your way through the exhibits and finally the room to make your own chocolate bar and margaritas!! The smell of chocolate and margaritas, what more do you need?! I would highly recommend this tour and thank you so much Roberto for making this such a memorable experience for us in Cozumel! Of course we bought tons of chocolate, nibs, coffee and other assorted items in the gift shop. For transportation, we took a taxi from downtown (about 15 mins) and there are tons of taxis right outside for the trip back into town by the port.
- Craig P00Nice tour, interesting information, but not a factory or plantationIt was a fun tour we decided to do during our port day of our cruise. They share lots of interesting facts about how coco beans are grown and the history of its importance. Our guide was fun and entertaining. But this is really just a roadside museum/tour. It isn't a plantation where its grown, you don't see anything being grown, harvested or processed. The closest you get is when the guide makes chocolate sauce using a stone press -- which is cool, the kids liked that, and surprisingly the chocolate she made was very tasty. The entire tour lasted just under an hour. Then you come out into a store where you can try all the different flavors and buy. It's expensive, $9-$10 per bar. Some parts of the tour felt a little slow, but overall the family (ages 10 - 70) liked it. You are inside or in the shade most of the time, so heat isn't a factor. I think it's a good option if you happen to be in the area or passing by, but it's probably 45-50 minutes from the cruise port, so you will take up a big chunk of your day going there and back, and there isn't much else around this to do. So plan your day accordingly. Average rating mainly due to the distance away from other attractions and the fact that you don't actually see or experience anything related to how it's grown or harvested or processed.
- AriadneHale00Beautiful experienceWhat a beautiful place they have created, a lot of detail and intention was put into place. Our guide was very informative and she walked us through sharing so much with us. This is great for kids and anybody interested in cacao and the process of creating chocolate. As a cacao enthusiast I was impressed with this entire experience.
- 653mannyl00100% recommend!I would highly recommend! Patty, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and patient! She answered all of our questions and made sure to include our two younger kids.
- O306DRjustinb00Very worthwhile!!This tour was a highlight of our trip. Pati was very knowledgeable and gave our family a deep appreciation for the Mayan culture. The chocolate that we make was amazing. The smell of the crushed coca is my new favorite aroma!!
- Climber73076200Wonderful ExperiencePaty our tour guide was informative and very receptive to eager questions. Even though we missed our reservation they still accommodated us. Very pleased with the staff and service we received. Try the mint chocolate amazing!!
- KKH007200Quick & FunBooked this on a whim, same day, while we watched a little rain sweep over the Gulf. We were the only ones on the tour, so got a little spoiled with VIP treatment. Short (maybe an hour or so?), entertaining and we got to learn about local plants, try some corn tortillas, make chocolate and margaritas! Our guide was informative, funny and interactive. Cute little gift shop, beautiful grounds. We've done a lot of "tours" and I definitely thought this was a really good value with hands-on experiences.
- lorie48200A history lesson and chocolate!A great quick tour. Patty was our guide and was very knowledgeable. The presentation video was not working so she had to do the presentation- I don’t think the video could beat her presentation. Highly recommend the tour.
- marytheresam202300Mayan Cacao CompanyBoth Roberto and Eduardo were very knowledgeable guides through the history and development of chocolate!
- 79Terrence005 stars for the chocolate margaritaI would only go here again for the Chocolate Margarita. Booked for a tour and day of the dead alter workshop. Lunch provided, but was less to be desired. Staff was great and friendly.
- 194kellim00Great educational and fun activity. We had a great time with Paty! She was very knowledgeable and friendly. We learned more about the Mayan culture and had fun making chocolate with her.
- niki_billing00Waste of time, dont botherWaste of time and money. Basically a shop and bar with a cooking class. No info on how chocolate made from pod. Cacao tree 1 foot tall and try to get you to buy photos from so called experience. Save your money
- Crystal D00History on the tongueHistory and the present come together in the tasting of chocolate at the live demonstration. Our tour bus guide led us through the small history display. A lively factory guide demonstrated how chocolate was developed as a food. Angel truly enjoys his work! I wish we'd had more time to explore the shop and taste the chocolates. This is not a theme park in the way Hershey is, but they share the same spirit of fun and play and beauty in their surroundings.
- amylouwho00Fun, educational stop! This was a fun stop. We learned the history of chocolate harvesting and got to sample cacao similar to how it was originally prepared.

We stopped here with our excursion from the ship. It was informative and fun. We had a mini salsa taco as a snack, then learned about cacao and had a demonstration of how it was chopped and ground with spices. Also, some free samples. I thought USD9.00 for a chocolate bar was a little pricey. There were a few colorful parrots to take pictures of.

What’s not to like? The sample of nibs, mixed with paprika for color, all-spice, honey and sugar was tasty and I wanted another sample of it. Angel was entertaining and made us all laugh. And the chocolate margarita was unexpectedly delicious!

The history of the chocolate is very interesting. The staff did a great job of teaching us about the cocoa. After tasting it with no sugar, I wanted to buy every bar in the visitor's center. Purchased the chocolate margarita...Fabulous! Loved Cozumel & would certainly do this tour again. Have already recommended the tour to all of my friends & told them they have to buy the chocolate.

Informational tour about the history of chocolate in the Mayan culture. We did the workshop and made our own chocolate as well which was really fun. Our guide, Eduardo, was awesome and really helped make the experience memorable.

A wonderful place to visit, all the staff were so warm and friendly and helpful, from booking me in via email when I had computer trouble, to our guide being so attentive even radioing immediately for umbrellas to be brought for us when it started raining! It was a really enjoyable experience learning about the significance of cacao for the Ancient Mayans in the museum and with the mural and great fun making our own chocolate paste. It is also a brilliant shopping destination with pottery and woodcrafts in addition to of course wonderful chocolate!

Wonderful experience. We had a small group with the cruise line. Were given a class on how the culture counted and how chocolate was used for commerce.

Is it worth doing the chocolate tour or just the general admission? Also best way to get there from the cruise ship.

I thought the chocolate tour was really cool, I'd recommend it. We did it as part of a cruise excursion, so am unsure how you'd get there on your own.
