Easy to get to from Carnival ship. Great tour!
This was an excellent tour. We arrived to Cozumel on a Cruise ship. We immediately got off and took a taxi to the Mayan Cacao company. It was a short drive from the Carnival port. The people at the port knew exactly what we’re talking about and said there were two Mayan Cacao companies, but they suggested the one near Playa Maya. The tour was excellent. We did not pre schedule our tour. We arrived right when they opened at 9am and we’re able to purchase tickets for general admission and basically get a private tour because all of the schedule tours were later. We tasted chocolate, watched the tour guide make chocolate, learned the history of the Mayans, more! Highly recommend!

A sweet treat of an experience
We visited The Mayan Cacao Company during a cruise stop in Cozumel. Our tour guide, Paty, was very kind, informative and engaging with both parents and kids. She was very knowledgeable, sharing fun anecdotes and answering questions along the way. The kids, ages 5 and 11, both enjoyed making (and of course eating) their own chocolate and we all enjoyed learning about the ancient Mayan culture and traditions. We loved the experience and would highly recommend a stop on your next vacation. Thank you, Paty!

We went to the Mayan Cacao Company as an excursion on our Holland America cruise. It was WONDERFUL! I wish I'd bought more candy bars and roasted cacao beans!

    Chocolate!
We got very lucky and arrived between tour busses from the cruise ships. We had a lovely private tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. The history of chocolate and the Mayans was very interesting. We had some tasty homemade salsa and we got to watch the eclipse through a piece of obsidian. The tour ended with tasty chocolate cocktails margaritas and chocolate martinis.

    Delicious chocolate!
Eduardo was extremely friendly and engaging. The kids loved the tour and getting to see how chocolate is made, right in front of them! They didn’t mind getting to taste it, either!

    Awesome sweet chocolate experience!
Awesome experience! Got to taste the chocolate plus more. Spent way too much money in the gift store, but the chocolate was just too good-we just had to buy some more! We were on a cruise excursion, but I am oh so glad that this was part of the excursion, and we would gladly come back even if we were not on a cruise excursion! This rates a 5 out of 5 easily!

    great. best tour guide ever.
My wife and I arrived around 12. We thought we would go with the tour that was just starting, but they were full, we instead got a private tour (we didn't have to pay extra) with Patti. She was an excellent tour guide, funny, knowledgeable and while we are more than intermediate Spanish speakers, she was able to clarify in almost native speaking English. She should get a raise or promotion. :) The chocolate is fantastic and their are rescued macaws that made the journey nicer. Beware of the police if you are driving or on a motorbike they seem to be looking for tourists and giving tickets.

    Private tour with Patty
We got a private tour with Patty and it was fabulous and delicious! Just my hubby and I. VERY interesting the history of cacao. Patty made us a sample of it. VERY tasty! We then got 2 drinks at the bar - a chocolate daiquiri and a chocolate mudslide. BOTH were delicious. We then got to try samples of the candy bars and were able to pick out our favorites. We had to buy more on the way out of town since they make perfect gifts! Highly recommended. Very relaxing area. Fun gifts.

    We loved it!
We had a wonderful time at the chocolate workshop. Eduardo was so kind, funny and helpful. There were six of us in our group, including two kids. We got to learn some really interesting facts about the important role of cacao in Mayan culture. We enjoyed a corn tortilla with chocolate mole and finally a super fun session making some chocolate. It was great to learn about the different spices and ingredients added, using things we can find at home in Canada. Thank you Eduardo for the awesome experience.

Yummy Cacao with lots of history
This was a guided tour for the whole family. We learned the origins of cacao and its importance to the Mayan culture and history of the development around the world. "Senior Willy Wonka" showed us herb plants that went into traditional cacao and how the cacao was grown. He was a fun and animated guide. We tasted fresh chocolate mole on fried tortillas made on the grill from his grandmother before the highlight of the tour. We were placed in front of traditional stone slabs with stone rolling pins and given a handful of roasted cacao beans to crush and roll along with Mexican honey and spices. Once finished, we placed the mixture into a small container to mold it into a circular disk wrapped with wax paper to take home. No milk added so no worries about lactose intolerance. We were able to ramble about after that to look at the beautiful sculptures and herb plants. The tour lasted about an hour and we learned about Mayan traditions. Good to do for everyone.

    Mayan Chocolate and Margarita Experience
We did the Chocolate and Margarita Experience at the Mayan Cacao Company. It was amazing. The tour started off with our guide Angel giving us some history on Mayan culture and what chocolate meant to them. Then we go to sample some of the best tortillas we have ever had. After that we got to make our own chocolate bar and then craft in a blender a chocolate margarita. Angel was an awesome guide and we never felt rushed. It was a 5 star experience that we will do again on our next trip to Cozumel.

Learning the history of cacao and its importance in the Mayan culture was very interesting. Our guide, Mártin, was very knowledgeable and informative during the whole experience and he made the entire experience completely enjoyable! And we made our own chocolate (no surprise my wife's came out better than mine) the ancient mayan way and it was delicious! And then followed that with making our own chocolate margarita that was also delicious! We did not book this tour through our cruise, we just hopped in a taxi at the port for the ride there ($40.00 RT) and bought tour tickets directly from the Mayan Cacao Company, $45.00 each and well worth it to us. $135 total which I believe is cheaper than the cruise ship price and we got to do it on our schedule without being in a large group. For our chocalate and margarita making portion it was just me and my wife and our guide Mártin. It was a very enjoyable experience for us.

Paty is an engaging and knowledgeable guide who happened to be celebrating her birthday on the day of our visit. Our small group of four thoroughly enjoyed the full tour, including chocolate making and margarita assembly. The Mayan Cacao experience is a unique dip into a cultural treasure, runs about 90 minutes end-to-end and is worth the very reasonable price of $45. Playa Mia also has an access point to one of the best free beaches in the neighborhood and is not to be overlooked—very much recommend the effort!

Booked this on a whim, same day, while we watched a little rain sweep over the Gulf. We were the only ones on the tour, so got a little spoiled with VIP treatment. Short (maybe an hour or so?), entertaining and we got to learn about local plants, try some corn tortillas, make chocolate and margaritas! Our guide was informative, funny and interactive. Cute little gift shop, beautiful grounds. We've done a lot of "tours" and I definitely thought this was a really good value with hands-on experiences.

An interesting visit, firstly seeing someone in national dress. We didn’t, see much of the village, but had a demonstration of how the chocolate was made after being given a rather weak chocolate drink. We then had a demonstration of how the chocolate was made. Then it was tasting time and there were about two dozen different flavours, and I tasted them all and they were delicious.
Unfortunately our tour was rather rushed as I would have liked to spend more time browsing, around the different areas.

Unless you are on a cruise, they are unwilling to sell you a tour. I tried calling for 3 days to be sure they were open because of the pandemic and no one answered the phone. When we went with a reservation through our hotel it was not the tour we wanted and they were unwilling to accommodate and blamed it in the hotel. That is $20 in a taxi ride and time wasted on our last day in Cozumel. I'm sure the tour would have been great, but we'll never know because I won't waste my time again.

Mario was awesome. He taught us how to count in Mayan, he shared a lot about the Mayan culture and also different plants/seasonings. We great enjoyed our time then we sampled traditional tamales with mole (uh-mazing). In the kitchen we crushed cacao and made our own chocolate discs then we made chocolate margaritas (non-alcoholic) if preferred. Uh-mazing! Our last stop was the sample table in the store. We were treated to various tastes and gained an appreciation for the different combinations.

Overall, We had a great experience learning about Mayan culture, and their cocoa making process. Our tour guide Patty was exceptional and did a great job at informing us on the different aspects Of Mayan culture. Also the margarita making section of our excursion was incredible, and Patty did a great job at teaching us all sorts of new recipes. Overall, I would rate our excursion a 10/10.

We did this as an excursion with our cruise line and really enjoyed it. Our guide Angel was very knowledgeable, showed us some beautiful views of the coastline on the way to the Mayan Cacao company, and taught us a lot about tequila. The experience itself consisted of making a lime, mango and chocolate margarita, and all were tasty. It was a nice small group alternative to the beach.
